The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Catechism Corner “Thanksgiving characterizes the prayer of the Church which, in celebrating the Eucharist, reveals and becomes more fully what she is. Indeed, in the work of salvation, Christ sets creation free from sin and death to consecrate it anew and make it return to the Father, for his glory. The thanksgiving of the members of the Body participates in that of their Head.” (CCC, 2637) The Catechism of the Catholic Church

“…As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, “Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.” [Luke 17: 11-19]

“Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times at the word of Elisha, the man of God. His flesh became again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean of his leprosy. Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On his arrival he stood before Elisha and said, ‘Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel…” [2 Kings 5:14-17]

ARE YOU CALLED TO THE JOURNEY? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process through which adults to learn more about and experience Catholicism. Adults discern if they are called to live out their Christianity as a member of the Catholic Church. While this process is ongoing throughout the year, we are beginning to prepare several persons for the Fall Formal Catechumenate Period of the RCIA now. There is still time to become part of the process this year. Could the Holy Spirit be prompting YOU to come and see what it is all about?

Perhaps, you are being called to help with the process as a Sponsor, or Team member. We are still in need of help. Team members: Team members attend RCIA sessions and assist the director with physical tasks associated with RCIA sessions, such as, set-up, prepare a prayerful environment, assist with Rites, and special events. Some Team members lead prayer, give presentations, lead discussions and facilitate Sunday sessions of the RCIA. Sunday Facilitators: Volunteers are needed to facilitate Sunday Breaking Open the Word sessions of the RCIA. On a rotating schedule, facilitators accompany the candidates and catechumens through the Liturgy of the Word on Sunday mornings, and facilitate the reflection on the Word during the second half of Mass. Facilitators need not be biblical scholars, but should be interested in the Bible and willing to prepare for reflections with assistance from the parish. … and other volunteers: There are many other ways to get involved with RCIA! We’re looking for people with a variety of skills, over a range of commitment levels. If you feel the Spirit stirring in you, and/or would like more information, please contact Sr. Ruth Hamel, O.P. at 614-267-9241 x 293 or E-mail at [email protected] . Thank you for responding to God’s call!

2 KINGS 5:14-17

“Now I know there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel.”

Glance around. Chances are some words are within your sight range. The spines of books declare their titles. Billboards announce upcoming events. Newsstands shout headlines. Product labels whisper ingredients in tiny print. Calendars pinpoint year, month, and day. Grocery lists demand an errand. The face of your phone reminds you that someone’s trying to reach you. In the sea of words around us, we might cheerfully ignore most of them and not risk harm. With a few others, we may kick the can of our attention down the road a while longer, but sooner or later we’ll need to engage. A very few words require our profound investment. How will we determine which those are, and give over our attention in time? General Naaman, leprosy sufferer, has heard too much advice from healers and none of it was helpful. Now a foreign seer is telling him to bathe in a local river to restore his flesh. Really? This is going to do it? In fact, it is. The prophet’s words are simple and precious. We’d be wise to listen up.

» How do you know when wise words are being spoken? What do you do with wise words when you find them??

2 TIMOTHY 2:8-13

But the word of God is not chained.

A liberating word cannot be restrained. When oppressed people hear the faintest whisper of a road out of servitude, they will follow it to their liberty or to their death, as Patrick Henry once declared. So Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. So our independent nation came to be. So the Underground Railroad was fashioned. So the formation of labor unions, women’s suffrage, the Civil Rights movement, the ongoing struggle of farm workers for justice ... and we can be sure the pursuit of full liberty for other emerging groups is a story yet to be told. God speaks a word into the world designed for our liberty from sin and death. We identify Jesus as that word made-flesh. And though powerful men nailed that free word to a cross and consigned it to a tomb, freedom itself can’t be held down. The cross reminds us that the cost of freedom is often dear. St. Paul wore his chains, but only for a time. The liberating word he brought to so many would free him, too.

» When in your experience has freedom whispered its hopeful message to you? From what circumstances have you been, or do you hope to be, liberated?

LUKE 17:11-19

“Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.

It begins to feel like "Leper Sunday." Stories about leprosy appear in both Testaments of the Bible, and in most cases, the afflicted ones are viewed as victims of physical, social, and moral complications. (In one happy exception, lepers play a praiseworthy role in a military battle in 2 Kings chapter 7.) While biblical leprosy encompassed a host of skin ailments besides Hansen’s disease, none of them are conditions you want to have. Because sickness in general was seen as a moral problem with physical and social consequences, healing was a complicated matter. If you were blessed with physical recovery, the moral and social dimensions still needed to be addressed. We see all these issues in play in Jesus’ encounter with ten lepers. Healing their bodies is the simple part: a word from Jesus is restorative. But how to restore spiritual wholeness? The priests can perform the ritual. But only gratitude heals us down to the soul.

» How do you say “thank you” to the legions of people who have made you who you are today?
