Situation
The Rutherford County Mobile Health Unit is not communicating its needs to itspublics to attain the assets needed to reach more of Rutherford County, causing the mobile
health unit to turn its back on citizens requesting health care.
Since 2003, the MHU has been acting as a primary care unit providing health screenings, check-ups and immunizations for those who do not otherwise have access. For most of the community, thelack of access to medical care is due to the absence of affordable health insurance, but for the portion
of the community that is insured, it is the difficulty of establishing a primary care physician. Themajor factor in lack of establishing proper medical care is transportation; many families cannotjeopardize their income and employment to seek proper medical care.
Rutherford County is the fastest growing county in the country with a population that grew 11percent in less than three years(1). Several factors behind this population surge are affordablehousing, jobs affiliated with a large manufacturing industry and an easy commute to Davidson County.Unfortunately, with the rise of the population, there also comes an increase in the need for health care.
In Rutherford County there are 33 schools with approximately 27,000 students (2).
Currently the MHU reaches only 13 percent of the countys school-age population as it visits fourschools and two housing units (2). The one factor that is preventing the MHU from reaching more ofits community is an additional mobile health unit.
In order to attain a new mobile health unit and provide medical assistance for the
needy, the MHU will need to seek national and local sponsorship as well as support from itscommunity. Research has proven that businesses both national and local, as well as churches, canprovide a limitless amount of assistance as opposed to the government, which is extremely limited inits charitable assistance.

Objectives
To obtain $300,000 by December of 2005 to put toward the purchase of an additional mobile healthunit, enabling it to provide medical care to more Rutherford County citizens.
To establish a volunteer pool of 50 people to assist the one-person operation in operations and fund-raising.
Increased awareness is implied. All of the strategies and tactics are aimed at educating the chosenpublics about the MHU, in order for them to give.

In the past year, individuals gave $152.07 billion to charitable causes; that is 75 percent of thetotal amount of U.S. charitable dollars given annually (9). Reportedly, 89 percent of all householdsgive, with an annual average of $1,620 per household, and 83.9 million American adults volunteer, representing the equivalent of over 9 million full-time employees at a value of $239 billion (7). The50-to 64-year-olds are targeted for donations and volunteering, because that is the fastest growing agegroup who will be earning the most and with the most time to volunteer (7). Households that areretired and those that make over $100,000/year are also targets, because they give 2.5 percent and 1.9percent, respectively, of their income or accumulated wealth, according to (4). It should be noted thatpeople who make the least give the highest percentage of their income, but those that make over$100,000/year give higher dollar amounts (4).

Strategies
It has become apparent through research that a demand has arisen for another mobile healthunit and a need for volunteers to aid the MHU in its mission to commit to aiding all persons, withspecial attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Commuting For Cares basic strategy is to gainmonetary and volunteer support through community and national donations and volunteers.
Commuting for Care is going to acquire monetary donations through the applicationprocess for sponsorship from national corporations and philanthropic organizations.
Commuting for Care is going to achieve monetary donations, a volunteer pool andawareness/education, locally, through a community health fair and persuasive literature.
Commuting for Care wants to inform and educate its publics through communicating theneed for health care assistance one community at a time.

LOCAL NONPROFIT REACHES OUT TO PROMOTEHEALTH AND EDUCATE PUBLIC
Murfreesboro, Tenn.--The Rutherford County Mobile Health Unit is kicking off National HealthLiteracy Month by hosting a community health fair with free testing and giveaways as part of its effortto inform and educate the community.
The MHU is joining community health advocates to promote the importance of understanding health
literacy and applying it to everyday life. The health fair will educate the community in understandinghow health affects all areas of life, including occupation, parenting and education.
Catherine Stephens, principal of Northfield Elementary, sees the importance of health in educationevery day.
Learning is an emotional activity. A child cannot learn without physical or emotional health, so ahealthy child is a healthy learner, said Stevens.Local health experts will be available to answer questions, distribute literature and conduct free bloodpressure, cholesterol, diabetes and bone density screenings.
The MHU Health Fair will provide free food and fun activities for all. The fair is free to the public, and information on the Rutherford County Mobile Health Unit will be available. The health fair willprovide excellent photo opportunities for the media with local opinion and perspectives.

A nonprofit organization has been established in our community to meet the health care needsof Rutherford County, which as you know is one of the fastest growing counties in the country.
The Mobile Health Unit was established in 2003 to provide health care to schools andcommunities who did not otherwise have access to it. The limited assets and lack of funding has madeit impossible for the Mobile Health Unit to answer the increased requests of health care from childrenand families in Rutherford County.
By joining your support with the doctors and nurses who understand the magnitude of futureproblems if these requests remain unanswered, we can begin to meet the rising health needs of ourcommunity.
There are several levels of participation at which your organization can contribute to the goalof obtaining a new health unit.
You can contribute by staffing volunteers at the MHU fund-raiser.
We understand that businesses are interested in giving back monetarily in this community. If
you choose to lend your support through this arena, you will be pleased to know that alldonations are tax-deductible.
We would like to thank you for your support and for understanding our concerns about healthcare in Rutherford County. If you would like to learn more about the Mobile Health Unit, or have anyadditional questions, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Timothy GloverVice President of Mission and Leadership, MTMC

The Rutherford County Mobile Health Unit is pleased to submit this request for your review.Commuting for Care is looking for your partnership in our cooperative efforts to help reach those inneed of medical attention in Rutherford County, Tenn.
Our mission is to commit ourselves to giving medical attention to all persons, with special attention tothose who are poor and vulnerable. We are advocates for a compassionate and just society, through ouractions and our words.
The Rutherford County Mobile Health Unit is committed to health care that leaves no one behind. In2003, we began serving 24 patients each month. We visited three schools and one housingdevelopment one day each week. Now we provide four schools and two housing developments withour services three days a week, serving an estimated 84 patients each month. Our services includehealth screenings, wellness check-ups, immunizations, primary care, disease management and pediatrics.
Many of the people we serve are without primary care or are medically homeless. Many times, thosewithout insurance or those in one-parent households cannot afford to seek medical assistance untilthey are very ill. This results in expensive emergency room bills that could have been avoided if theyhad been treated earlier. With the support of another unit, we can reach many more of these people.
Our goal is to raise $300,000 toward the purchase of an additional mobile health unit which wouldenable us to provide medical care to a greater number of citizens in Rutherford County. We qualify as anonprofit organization under 501(c)(3).
Thank you for your interest in our cause. We envision building upon our collaborative success byworking together for a better and healthier Rutherford county. With your assistance Commuting forCare would like to help our national health care problem--one community at a time.
Sincerely,
Timothy GloverVice President of Mission and Leadership, MTMC
