    Kathryn L. Holloway

Kathryn L. Holloway is a neurosurgery pioneer. She developed a new approach to deep brain stimulation (DBS), which treats Parkinsons disease and other movement disorders. A profes-sor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Dr. Holloway is also the chief of neurosurgery at the Hunter Holmes McGuire V.A. Medical Center in Richmond.

As an academic neurosurgeon, Dr. Holloway is involved in teaching and research and has a busy clinical practice in functional neurosurgery, which focuses on the treatment of conditions where central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) function is abnormal.

In 2005, she broke new ground in medicine by developing a technique for performing frame-less DBS. Now used around the country, this revolutionary innovation allows patients to be more comfortable during very serious neurosurgery procedures.

At VCU, Dr. Holloway developed the epilepsy surgery program and established the move-ment disorder surgery program, which is now one of only six specialized Parkinsons Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Care Centers in the nation.

Dr. Holloway is poised to continue as a trailblazer. Her clinical goal is to expand the applica-tions of neuromodulation, which is the electrical stimulation of a peripheral nerve, the spinal cord, or the brain for relief of pain, to other diseases such as depression, Alzheimer's disease, obesity, and paralysis.

Nationally recognized for her contributions to the field, Dr. Holloway was elected to the execu-tive council of the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeons and to the Society of Neurological Surgeons. She was a guest examiner for the Oral Board Exam of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and served on the Veteran Affairs Blue Ribbon Panel for Development of Surgical Trials. Dr. Holloway has also published in the fields of epilepsy surgery, movement disorder surgery, adult neural stem cell culture, and general neurosurgery.

A 1980 graduate of RutgersCamden College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Holloway was active in student life on campus. A member of student government and founder of the volleyball club, she received the Outstanding Senior Award from the Rutgers University Camden Alumni As-sociation. Dr. Holloway received an M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1984 and completed her neurosurgery resi-dency at the VCU School of Medicine in 1990. She completed a fellowship in neural grafting at the National Institutes of Health. For her first 12 years on staff at the VCU School of Medicine, she was the director for neurosurgery resident education.

The wearing of the academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities in the world. In the American Council on Educations book titled American Universities and Colleges, it is suggested the Gowns may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head...

Throughout the years, European universities have continued to show great diversity in their academic dress. American universities, on the other hand, when they decided to adopt academic dress, immediately established a code of regulations which today is followed by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it possible to distinguish the bachelor's, master's, and doctor's and at the same time recognize the university which has given them the degree.

Gowns: Bachelors gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. Masters gown, worn open or closed, has oblong sleeves, the front part of which frequently is cut away at the elbow. Doctors gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It is worn open or closed. Cotton, poplin or similar material is used for bachelors and masters degrees, and rayon or silk ribbed material is used for the doctors degree.

Hoods: The hoods vary in sizes: 48 inches for the doctors degree, 42 inches for the masters, and 36 inches for the bachelors. All hoods are lined in silk in the academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color designating the subject in which the degree was granted.

Below is a list of some of the faculty colors as prescribed by the Intercollegiate Code for the binding of the hood.

    THE ACADEMIC COSTUME

The color or colors of the lining of the hood for the nine colonial colleges are: scarlet, Rutgers; crim-son, Harvard; green-gold-silver, William and Mary; blue, Yale; red-blue, Pennsylvania; orange-black, Princeton; light blue-white, Columbia; brown, Brown; and green-white, Dartmouth.

Caps: Black mortarboards or soft hats are worn for all degrees. The gold tassel signifies a doctorate.

The shield of the Rutgers coat of arms appears on the University gonfalon. The shield is quartered to represent in armorial bearings the founding and the growth of the more than 200-year-old University.

The first quarter (dexter, or the right upper quarter of the shield as one would carry it) bears the arms of Nassau, the House of Orange, and recognizes the Dutch settlers who founded the college under the aegis of the Dutch Reformed Church.

The armorial devices in the upper sinister quarter are those of George III combined with Queen Charlottes. Georges arms represent his dominions of England, Scotland, and Ireland; the two small escutcheons, centered, his ancestral right to bear the arms of Brunswick and Saxony. The crest on the dexter small escutcheon is the crown of Charlemagne, which George III as Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire was entitled to show. It was George III who granted the charter of 1766 to Queens College, named in honor of Charlotte of Mecklenburg, King Georges consort.

The arms shown on the sinister half of this quarter are Queen Charlottes and represent the German states ruled by the House of Mecklenburg.

The third quarter, dexter, is the emblem from the Great Seal of the State of New Jersey which Rutgers as the State University is entitled to show. Fittingly, the plows depicted also symbolize Rutgers' desig-nation as one of the original Land-Grant colleges.

The fourth quarter, sinister, is the coat of arms of Colonel Henry Rutgers, an early benefactor of what was then known as Queens College. Colonel Rutgers was a descendent of Rutger Van Schoenderwo-erdt, who settled in New York in the seventeenth century. The family name was changed to Rutgers in 1636. The name of the college was changed in 1825 to honor Colonel Rutgers, trustee and benefactor.

THE COAT OF ARMS OF RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

ON THE BANKS OF THE OLD RARITANMy father sent me to old Rutgers,And resolvd that I should be a man;And so I settled down, in that noisy college town,On the banks of the Old Raritan.

Chorus:On the banks of the old Raritan, my friends,Where old Rutgers evermore shall stand; For has she not stood since the time of the flood,On the banks of the old Raritan.

The sun of justice shines in Camden; Its enlightened truth we all can share; Our hearts and minds unite at that honored urban site,On the banks of the old Delaware.

Chorus:On the banks of the old Delaware, my friends,Sound the clarion trumpets, let them blare;Clash the cymbals, ruff the snare, Rutgers glory fill the air,On the banks of the old Delaware.

Newark counterpart to propose a unified Rutgers Law School as a proactive measure for enhancing the efficacy and national reputation of a Rutgers legal education.

Students at every level engaged in top-level research and competed successfully against their peers from other top universities in academic forums around the world. RutgersCamden student athletes achieved numerous goals. Tim VanLiew won the NCAA Division III national title in the javelin, and captured the New Jersey Athletic Conference title in that same sport. The golf team advanced to compete in NCAA Division III championship com-petition, while the mens soccer team was ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.

Undergraduate and graduate students alike presented their original research at national academic conferences and in scholarly journals. They developed new approaches to critical matters and commanded national attention through such venues as the presentation of a Google Policy Fellowship and being selected to the highly competitive national Presiden-tial Management Fellowship program.

RutgersCamden faculty also posted impressive accomplishments. Their research endeav-ors continued to command funding by the NSF, NEH, NIH, NEA, and many other highly competitive federal funding agencies. During the past year, faculty researchers at the Senator Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs received a $4 million grant from the Pascal Sykes Foundation to find ways to help families in southern New Jersey. RutgersCamden faculty were cited by numerous authorities, including the Supreme Courts of the United States and Israel. They are represented in such prestigious academies as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematical Society, and the American Academy of Nursing. Their research advanced knowledge across multiple disci-plines, and resulted in faculty-authored books on such diverse topics as business history, prayer, marketing, legal writing, and arms control.

Alumni returned to campus many times throughout the year, including for the 25th an-niversary celebration of the founding of the School of Business.

Graduates and their families are encouraged to stay connected with RutgersCamden. Visit camden.rutgers.edu for news and alumni information.

The Class of 2013 graduates after a year that marked significant growth for the campus community, as well as the creation of a framework that holds the promise of advancing RutgersCamden for some time to come. The accomplishments achieved at RutgersCamden this year exemplify our long tradition as the preeminent institution of higher education in southern New Jersey, and include innovations in research, teaching, and service; the awarding of prestigious fellowships to our faculty; major construction and renovation projects; and new offerings in programs in Camden and at various locations throughout the state.

RutgersCamden is an exciting place to be, and never more so than at this transformative moment in our history. On August 22, 2012, Governor Chris Christie visited the campus for a ceremonial signing of legislation that restructures higher education across the state. By signing this legislation, the governor and our states leaders sent a very clear message: RutgersCamden is an important part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and a vital element in the growth of southern New Jersey.

The legislation also furthered the ongoing public dialogue about the need for greater investment in higher education, both in southern New Jersey and across the state. In November, the citizens of New Jersey approved a bond issue to provide funding to enhance state universities and colleges. RutgersCamden received approval for projects totaling approximately $62.4 million, including the construction of a Nursing and Science Building that will provide 119,741 square feet of classroom and laboratory space for the School of Nursing and our science programs. The funds also will support sweeping upgrades to the technological capacity of the campus; new equipment for our faculty and student research-ers in the sciences; and modernization of enhanced classroom services.

As an evident symbol of RutgersCamdens rising prominence, 330 Cooper Street opened in August 2012. The 12-story, $55 million facility provides state-of-the-art apartment-style living for 350 students. It also is attracting new retail to Camden, including an active 7-Eleven that serves both the campus and the city.

Additional vitality to Cooper Street is preparing to emerge. 305 Cooper Street will begin its transformation into a Writers House that will reinforce RutgersCamden as a vibrant cultural hub by providing ample space to host the respected and emerging authors who visit and write from campus. Similarly, 312 Cooper Street will begin its metamorphosis into the first Alumni House on any Rutgers campus.

At all times during 2012-2013, RutgersCamden worked assiduously to advance opportu-nities for students at every level. A sweeping initiative to deliver student academic ser-vices in the most efficient manner possible was launched, with the intent to implement streamlined processes that help our students to achieve their graduation goals in a timely manner. More than 40 percent of our students invested at least 280,000 hours in civically engaged learning programs that sharpened their skills while also serving the citizens of our region. Students volunteered their spring breaks to help communities and families recover from Hurricane Sandy, and worked closely with Camden neighbors regularly. Increasingly, RutgersCamden is viewed as a national model for civic engagement on an urban univer-sity campus.

In recognition of the challenging economic climate in which students seek to launch their careers, RutgersCamden accelerated its efforts to secure internship opportunities and to connect potential employers with students. Our School of Law worked closely with its
