Hello and welcome to Rustic Pathways.

As we enter our 32nd year of operations, we ask ourselves, “What are we doing to prepare students for the future?”

The world is changing so rapidly, and education today is more than the mastery of subjects like math, science, and history. Today’s well-rounded and successful students also have the skill sets to thrive in our increasingly globalized society. They have exceptional communication skills, they know how to collaborate, they are able to think critically, they appreciate the value of community service, and above all, they are culturally competent. Future leaders have to be able to communicate across language barriers to find common ground despite cultural differences. What is most exciting about education today, is that these skills are not learned inside the walls of a classroom or behind the screen of a computer. These skills are learned through personal experiences out in the world.

To develop these critical skills, students have to expose themselves to new places, new languages, new cultures, and new ideas. They have to travel. Travel, especially when paired with service work, provides a multifaceted perspective through which we can find solutions that aren’t limited, but that transcend state borders and affect the entire globe. The moment students step away from their home and experience a new way of life, their mental doors are opened and a new world of possibilities is in view. It is these students, the ones who elect to travel and work alongside community members on service projects, who will become future problem solvers, change makers, and global leaders.

As a parent of two young boys (and another on the way), I cannot wait to see them travel. They will get homesick and they will get sunburned, but I know that along the way they will also learn invaluable lessons from a village elder in the highlands of Fiji and how a community in Costa Rica implements sustainable farming practices. They are going to understand much more about the world than I can even comprehend, and to me, that is the definition of a brighter future.

I truly believe that all students should be given the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and outside of their home countries. I also believe that Rustic Pathways provides the very best opportunities for students to do this. We have top-notch safety policies and procedures; we invest fully in local staff, in student learning, and in community partnerships; and we are dedicated to genuine customer service, so our families feel reassured and comfortable when their students are far from home.

I am proud of what I do and proud of Rustic Pathways because I truly believe that our programs are preparing students to create a better future. We’re a collective of diverse individuals from all over the world dedicated to inspiring and teaching each student that travels with us, and I welcome you to our family.

An exciting aspect of Rustic Pathways’ programs is the opportunity to visit multiple countries during the same summer. Many programs have been designed to interconnect and almost all of our trips can be combined. All dates listed reflect physical departures from North America. While many connecting programs may list a two or three day discrepancy between departure and return dates, they can usually be seamlessly combined in country without missing a day. If it is possible, we will make it happen! For more information, please visit rusticpathways.com/flights.

Choosing Your Programs1. Ask yourself questions to figure out what type of program would be best for you. Where do you want to travel? For

how long? Do you want to do service, go on an adventure, learn a language, or a mix? What type of service work do you want to do?

2. Our programs connect! Combine a week of service with a week of adventure. Connect from Thailand to Laos. Our programs easily connect within the country and across the regions.

3. Talk to us, and find your perfect program! Call +1 440.975.9691 or email [email protected] to chat with one of our representatives about any of our programs and have all your questions answered.

4. Enroll online. When you’re ready, just head to rusticpathways.com and click on the “Enroll Now” button!

I’ve Signed Up, Now What…?1. You’ll receive a welcome email and be assigned a Personal Travel Advisor. He or she will be your guide through out

your Rustic Pathways experience, helping you fill out forms, purchasing airfare, and answering any pre-trip questions you may have.

2. You will have to fill out medical and other participant forms, as well as get a passport if you do not already have one. It’s not the fun part of travel, but it has to be done and we’re here to help!

3. Pack! Follow the packing list provided for your program, and remember, it’s always better to pack light. Just make sure to get the essentials and you’ll be ready to go!

Have an Incredible Trip!Parents will be sent arrival notification emails when students land in country, ensuring their children are safe while allowing our students to disconnect and enjoy their experience.

We have a dedicated phone line for 24-hour emergency support. However, students are encouraged to be fully engaged in their program and are expected to always communicate with their program leaders.

Safety and Risk Management

As a leader in our industry, Rustic Pathways takes the health and well-being of our students very seriously. While we believe in the transformative power of expanding one’s boundaries, we are heavily invested in managing the risks of doing so. Our comprehensive training programs, year-round presence in countries, rigorous safety standards, and continued commitment to evaluating risks ensure we remain at the forefront of our industry.

Philosophy of RiskWe understand that risk is an inherent part of our programs. We travel to remote destinations, expose our students to unfamiliar surroundings, and encourage personal growth through new experiences. When conducted responsibly, these experiences create student transformations that are impossible to replicate elsewhere, and for this reason, our risk management system remains a fundamental component of all our programs. It is driven by strong leadership and executed successfully throughout our ground teams and partners.

Three Tiers of Risk ManagementRustic Pathways has developed a three-tiered approach to risk management: company-wide, country specific, and program specific. Our Safety and Risk Management Director works year-round to establish global policies and maintain crisis response protocols. Country Directors and their teams develop risk management plans for each program and location visited, while continuously monitoring local conditions through on-the-ground reports and State Department councils. Our Program Leaders are trained to monitor risk and ensure the safety and health of our students. Finally, we partner with International SOS, one of the world’s most reputable providers of medical and travel services.

Student and Parent ResponsibilitiesOur students and parents also play a crucial role in maintaining the safety of our programs. We rely on our students to understand and comply with the rules of our programs as outlined in our Student Pledge. We expect our parents and students to fully and accurately complete our enrollment forms in a timely manner.

What About…

International SOSInternational SOS is a medical emergency service provider that allows all our students access to emergency evacuation services and expert health advisors. A 24-hour provider, International SOS has 27 assistance centers around the world staffed by multilingual professionals, as well as 35 clinics and a fleet of air ambulances.

Risk Management PlansRisk Management Plans identify known or foreseen risks and detail the protocols by which we respond to critical incidents and natural disasters. Each Risk Management Plan details the risks and responses that are specific to that country and the activities that occur on each program. They also identify the nearest clinics and hospitals for every location that a program visits, so we know ahead of time where to go for help.

Safety Training for LeadersAll summer Program Leaders are First Aid and CPR certified, while many are also Wilderness First Aid certified, Wilderness First Responders, or EMTs. Programs in rural areas are staffed with leaders that have the highest level of training. Additionally, all Program Leaders attend an in-country training that covers common medical issues, emergency scenarios, and critical incident protocols.

Our Approach to Student Learning

At the core of our program design is the notion that what you experience while traveling will profoundly shape who you are and how you view the world. Believing that travel provides a unique opportunity for student learning, we intentionally design our programs to promote student growth.

We inspire curiosity and passion for exploration through genuine experiences. We stray off of the tourist track and encourage our students ask questions and engage with locals.

We design unique programs that allow students to form meaningful connections around the world. We believe that creating personal connections improves the quality of our experiences and fosters a shared humanity across lines of difference.

We encourage our students to think critically about global issues and to push their personal boundaries. We believe that firsthand experiences allow students to develop a better understanding of our complex world.

We facilitate debrief discussions that help our students process and make meaning of what they experience. Our program leaders are trained to ask probing questions and guide our students through the process.

Student ImpactWe believe that purposefully-designed travel experiences can develop students who

better understand complex issues and are better prepared to take on modern global

challenges. Our service initiatives are designed to utilize students’ skill sets and facilitate

interaction with locals, allowing them to learn while contributing to a purposeful project.

We strive to provide immersive travel experiences that shape students’ perspective on the

world, foster a sense of shared humanity, and ensure that students go into the world

making globally minded decisions.

Core Learning ValuesTo ensure that our students have formative experiences, we encourage students to fol low our core learning values. These values represent the way that we believe the best learners operate while traveling in new cultures and locations.

RespectWe will learn to conduct ourselves as positive ambassadors of our home countries, families, and the Rustic Pathways global community. We will be respectful of local cultures and remain aware of how our actions are perceived.

EngageWe will strive to be active global citizens by engaging with our surroundings and understanding the inter-connectedness of our actions. We will be compassionate and open-minded participants in cross-cultural dialogue, taking responsible action when needed.

GrowWe will achieve personal growth by challenging our social, physical, and emotional boundaries. As we reflect on our global experiences, we will work to integrate these lessons into our everyday lives.

Identify and Design Projects with Local PartnersWe spend time with our local partners and community members on the ground to understand their needs and priorities. In collaboration with partner communities, we design projects that both address needs and build on community strengths.

Provide Students Opportunities to Engage We collaborate with our partners to create well-defined roles for our students that harness their skills and ensure they make a meaningful contribution. Students are able to select programs based on their personal interests and skill sets, maximizing both their experience and the success of our service initiatives. In addition to participating in direct service projects, students also learn from their work and better understand their role in the global community.

Work Together to Achieve GoalsOur students join the efforts of our local partners during their programs and work collaboratively to achieve project goals. Both students and communities utilize the unique skills they bring and learn from and about each other. Through the year, our staff and local partners continue to push projects forward and monitor and evaluate their effectiveness.

Monitoring and EvaluationWe constantly work to learn from our experiences and strengthen the impact we have. We conduct regular formal and informal evaluations with project partners and beneficiaries, evaluate both the process and impact of our ongoing initiatives and consistently use feedback to improve project design and implementation.

Long-term Partnerships and SustainabilityWe design projects with local partners that incorporate plans for how the results will be maintained and sustained in the future. We develop long-term partnerships, link our work with ongoing local initiatives, and support community development.

Our Approach to ServiceWe take a comprehensive approach to community service, working with community partners from the design process through to monitoring and evaluation. Each year, we publish a global community service report that presents our progress, accomplishments, and goals for the future. Below is the process we follow in designing, implementing, and evaluating our service initiatives.

Student Stories & Program Connections

Tara Advaney - London, United Kingdom Tara traveled with us from her home town in London to Tanzania, where she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and participated on our Culture and the Crater program.

Mount Kilimanjaro presented itself as an opportunity to pro-mote “Free A Girl” while simultaneously satisfying my hunger for adven ture. I will never forget the feeling of approaching the summit, the warm tears in my eyes clashing with the freezing wind blowing against my face. I’ve never felt such a swelling amount of courage, self belief or confidence. Out of all the expe-riences that I have been granted in my lifetime, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is, and will always remain, at the top of my list.

Miriam Wahid - Salisbury, NC, U.S.Miram was one of the recipients of our 2014 Service Grants, providing her with a full scholarship to participate in our Life in the Bateyes program in the Dominican Republic.

This was my first time out of the country, and I cannot imagine a better way to immerse myself in another culture. I was able to learn so much, both from being immersed into the culture and from the meaningful, thought-provoking, and inspiring conver-sations I had with the trip leaders. It was humbling to have such a great opportunity to give back to a world that has given me so much, and to be a part of something larger than just myself or my hometown. It really allowed me to open my eyes to new ways of thinking, and helped me better understand the mean-ing of successful service and the delicate balance between neg-ative and beneficial voluntourism. I left this trip with a mindset altered for the better, and I know I will carry this new worldview with me wherever I go in the future.

Arturo Prestamo - Monterrey, MexicoArturo traveled with us from his home town in Mexico to our Come with Nothing Program in Laos and our Amazing Thailand Adventure Program in Thailand.

This is my 3rd year with Rustic Pathways. I’ve done over 5 differ-ent programs around the world with Rustic and even though I know Rustic pretty well now there’s always that element of surprise that’s omnipresent in all of their programs. This year I went to one of Rustic’s most challenging programs, Come With Nothing: The Mekong Expedition in Laos and I did a more ‘touristy’ trip as well called, Amazing Thailand. This was a perfect combination because, in a time-lapse of about 4 weeks, I went from having only a single pair of clothing and having to sleep on hard floors, to being just another tourist in the amaz-ing country of Thailand. This helped me see South East Asia from both ends of the spectrum.

Ingvild Lemstad - Stavanger, NorwayIngvild joined us on our two-week Service in the Clouds program in India.

I think that in many ways this is what traveling does to you: it changes your perceptions,

forces you to see other perspectives, and increases your understanding of the world. And it is only then, when we can understand the world, that we can work in order to improve it. And I realized that in order to truly travel, to truly improve your understanding of the world, one needs to see people, not only places. One needs to experience the culture, its differences and its similarities.

Fiona McCarten - StudentSurrey, United Kingdom

As a well-seasoned traveler and expatri-ate kid, I used to consider myself well aware of my place in the world. I thought I had actively understood the cultures of the countries I had lived in, and fully immersed myself in the experiences and ideas around me in order to learn the most from being there. When I got that acceptance letter from Rustic Pathways, I had no idea how much my mindset would change.

Hannah Jackson - StudentKuala Lumpur, Malaysia

If the world were likened to a book, my Rustic Pathways experience was like opening up a whole new chapter that I thought I would never read.

Muhamad Razak - StudentCape Town, South Africa

Possibly the most breathtaking and inspiring two weeks of my life.

Mary Thomas - ParentBainbridge Island, WA, United States

The program is well run, well organized and well implemented. I feel comfortable sending my child on long journeys with Rustic Pathways because I know he will experience life-changing travel and service adventures that are led by people who will keep him safe and inspired at the same time.

Jinan Al-Busaidi - StudentMuscat, Oman

Angelo John DiRosa - StudentEaston, PA, United States

Rustic Pathways provided me the opportunity to explore places of the world that I had never even imagined I would see! The knowledge and experi-ence that the group leaders demonstrat-ed was astounding, and I made lifelong friendships with other teens from around the world!

Dany Guajardo - StudentMonterrey, Mexico

We might live on different continents, but the desire to make a change in some-one else’s life is strong enough to bring us together through Rustic Pathways. After having my first #sorustic experience, going out of my comfort zone, traveling alone for my first time, and deciding I would answer YES to any adventurous situation I faced, I have decided I cannot settle for only one Rustic Pathways trip.

Allison Zanolli - StudentMenlo Park, CA, United States

Traveling with Rustic, I felt like a visitor and a traveler in Fiji, rather than just a tourist. The trip really allowed me to be immersed in the culture, more so than I ever would have been on a family vacation. Honestly, the people I traveled with, the places we went, and the memo-ries we made all combined to make it the best trip I have ever gone on.

Alessandra Merritt - StudentCapetown, South Africa

This was a life changing experience. Not only did I discover so much more about the world around me, but also about myself, and what I can do for others.

Heather Rider - ParentToronto, Canada

When my daughter was traveling in Thailand, Rustic Pathways gave us peace of mind and was very diligent in letting us know when my daughter was transferring between trips and when she arrived to the new group safely.

I really loved this program, and it opened new doors for me. I’m more adventurous now, and more daring

Maria Eseverri - StudentWeston, FL, United States

Rustic Pathways gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge, interest, values, motivation, among other qualities, that I feel now genuinely shape me as a person and have shined light on my inner self. This incredible trip aided me in finding who I really am and what I love to do, as well as deem importance to intangible qualities instead of meaningless things that just simply play a role in society. Deciding to travel with Rustic Pathways to participate in this unbelievably amazing program was the best decision I ever made because I not only had an astounding time, but I know this experience has altered my life and my future for the better. Traveling with your family to a destination and exploring with Rustic Pathways are two completely different experiences for many reasons, and that is why I, assuredly, would recommend Rustic Pathways to anyone I might encounter.

We have students from dozens of countries worldwide, including Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Turkey, The United Arab Emirates, China, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and many others.

Can I combine programs?Yes! Our programs are designed to connect. Most of our students combine two or more programs to create their own itinerary. In general, all of our programs in Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Mongolia, and China connect. Programs in Australia and Fiji also connect to one another. Programs in Costa Rica, Peru, and the Dominican Republic are also easily connectible.

Dates and program lengths on the website include travel time to our destination countries departing from and returning to the United States, which is why you may see lengths like “11 days” listed. Despite what looks like overlapping start and end dates, programs in the same country will connect together seamlessly, and pro grams in different countries in the same region will usually connect as well.

Important InformationThis catalog provides a brief summary of some of the 2015 travel programs (“the programs”) offered by Rustic Pathways Australia (USA), Inc. (“Rustic Pathways”), a tour promoter based in the state of Ohio. All program participants and their parents and/or legal guardians (collectively “the participants”) are required to read, sign, comply with, and abide by a comprehensive Statement of Terms and Conditions and various waivers and liability limitations that govern and regulate participation in the programs. Rustic Pathways will furnish these various materials to all qualified participants.

All travel can be dangerous, and adventure travel to the more remote areas of the world poses unique risks. Rustic Pathways insists that all participants and potential participants seriously consider the dangers of any program undertaken. Participants should not apply for or participate in any Rustic Pathways program if they are unwilling to accept any and all of the potential risks and dangers such a program could pose.

International travel to and domestic travel within overseas destinations will be on several airlines (“the airlines”). No airline by virtue of its endorsement of this brochure represents itself as contracting with any purchaser of the programs. The airlines are not responsible for any act, omission, or events during the time passengers are not on board their planes or conveyance. The passage contract in use by the airlines, when issued, shall constitute the sole contract between the airlines and the participant.

Letter and Invoice, and provide you with a checklist for what happens next. Anytime you have questions, your PTA will be there to help – whether you are filling out medical forms or trying to decide what to pack.

What about flights?Because our students come from many different countries and regions of the world, students who are starting from outside North America will arrange their own flights (not included in program cost). It is your responsibility to arrange an appropriate flight and make sure your child makes it onto their flight on travel day. If special pick-up and drop-off arrangements are needed for your child while traveling with Rustic Pathways, a transportation fee may be assessed. Once you have enrolled, we will contact you with further details.

Do I have to fill out forms? Once you have been enrolled into a Rustic Pathways program, you will be responsible for correctly completing all required waivers and medical forms prior to departure. These forms are essential for the safety of all students.

Do I need a visa?Depending on your nationality and passport origin, you may need a visa to enter your destination country. We are happy to give you information and help direct you to the appropriate authorities, but we expect families to make visa arrangements on their own unless otherwise specified. When making your flight arrangements, please keep in mind that you might need a transit visa for layovers in some countries during your trip.

Do I need to speak English? You must be able to converse in English. We do not require fluency and welcome students speaking English as a second language, but you must be comfor table speaking English for the majority of the program. This is for your safety and the safety of everyone on your trip.

What are your rules? For the safety of all students, staff, and community members, we have a few very important rules. On Rustic Pathways pro grams, students must not possess, purchase, or consume alcohol, cigarettes, or any illegal drugs. They do not engage in any kind of sexual activity, or leave the premises after a program leader has estab lished “in for the night.” Bullying and discrimination will not be tolerated, nor will disrespect to other students, staff members, or community members. Students who disobey these rules may be removed from a program at their own cost.

What’s included in program costs?Program costs include all touring, activities, and admission fees as specified in the trip itinerary. We also cover all internal ground transportation, accommodation, and meals. Some programs offer optional activities at an additional cost, like sky diving or scuba diving. Personal items such as souvenirs, laundry, internet, snacks, and phone calls are not included. The cost of international and domestic airfare is also not included in the pro gram price. Due to the fluctuations in airline fees, currency exchange rates, and global oil prices, Rustic Pathways reserves the right to pass along any increases in travel costs to the participants if necessary.

Are there other fees?We try to avoid additional fees whenever possible, but there are sometimes fees associated with the application, late payments, special services, etc. Please see rusticpathways.com/fees.

How do I pay? While we accept major credit cards for the initial application fee, we are unable to accept credit card payments for the trip itself. We do accept checks in U.S. dollars, as well as wire transfers. More information will be avail able in your Welcome Letter.
