The Russell Group isn’t the only university group out there University Alliance is a group of 'business engaged' universities, while Million + is a public policy think tank made up of universities. Some universities choose not to be part of any group – and this shouldn’t be viewed negatively.

Entry requirementsEach Russell Group university sets its own entry requirements for each of its courses. This means that when you’re thinking about going to university, you’ll need to look on universities’ own websites or in their prospectuses to find the specific grades, qualifications and subjects that they require for the courses that you are interested in.

Some advanced level subjects are more frequently required for entry to degree courses than others.

These subjects are called ‘facilitating’ because choosing them at advanced level leaves open a wide range of options for university study. These facilitating subjects are:

BiologyEnglish LiteratureHistoryModern Languages and Classical LanguagesChemistryGeographyPhysicsMaths and Further Maths

Take a look at the Russell Group Leaflet on Informed Choices:

If you don’t know what you want to study at university then it’s a really good rule of thumb that taking two facilitating subjects will keep a wide range of degree courses open to you.
