Pep Rally by Lily Carras Name

As you all know, on November 3, 2016, we had a pep rally. We were celebrating the kick-off of the first

ever basketball game at the brand new Dean Rusk! First off, we were greeted by our new basketball

teams. The new cheerleading teams did a fabulous job performing! Then, teachers and some students

were called up to play a game of Got-Cha. Although we cheered very hard, no students won. When the

winning teacher went back to the bleachers and the game was over, the winner of the Change Wars

were announced. Although 7th grade had been in the lead for most of the fundraiser, 6th grade had the

sweet taste of victory in their mouths! We all wanted to see Mr. Gluckson get a pie in the face, but ap-

parently he was "absent". Well, nobody liked this. There was a big chant about how we all wanted to

see Mr. Gluckson get his face pie, and soon the whole school was chanting and stomping and clapping.

The teachers began to quiet us down, but I doubt that we'll forget that moment. Anyways, that was ba-

sically the pep rally!

How do we have so much innovative technology and

our own laptops at Dean Rusk? Where did the money

come from? The money for our brand-new school

building with all the new technology comes from

SPLOST. SPLOST stands for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. It’s a one percent sales tax in the coun-

ty. The State of Georgia has allowed counties to collect this money for special projects, like building our

brand-new middle school and awesome tech gear! If it’s renewed for another

five years, one penny of every dollar spent in Cherokee County will continue to

go to schools.

SPLOST not only provides funding to Dean Rusk, but to all of the schools in the

Cherokee County School District. It’s on the ballot on November 8th, so make

sure your parents vote to continue SPLOST. The money is needed for more

school construction and

repairs, new school buses, and the latest technology.

DEAN RUSK BASKETBALL

On the night of October 21st, the eighth grade band performed at a Se-

quoyah football game. Some of you may have been there, and most likely

you probably saw us performing. For the eighth graders it was an intro-

duction to the world of marching band. The eighth graders had a blast

playing songs like the " star spangled banner" and "Mortal Kombat". Be-

fore the game the band was taught some of the basics of marching band

and even got to meet the instrument leaders who direct that certain

group. They even got a private performance of the song that the march-

ing band played at halftime. Let's just say that when you're in the center

of the marching band it is very loud and you can her each individual sec-

tion. The eighth graders also had to work hard since they had to play eve-

ry song by memory. Personally I think that the band and I had a blast at

the football games cheering on the team, playing the instruments and

hanging out with friends.

Thank you to our wonderful cheerleaders

for all of their hard work and dedication to

the team! Keep us fired up!!

Beware of Technical Glitches

By Austin Ridley

Recently, the Samsung Galaxy line just in-

troduced their new Galaxy Note 7, and they

are not working as expected. There have

been many reports about the phones over-

heating, catching on fire, and exploding.

Samsung has had to recall all of the Note

7s, and replaced each one, but even the

new ones have been reported to overheat.

These phones have been considered dan-

gerous to airlines. Passengers with Sam-

sung phones are required to shut down the

phone completely to avoid accidents. Ac-

cording to USA Today, "It seems Samsung is

left with three not-so-great options." Sam-

sung will have to either drop the phone, try

to fix the problem and release for a third

time, or continue on the next generation

Galaxy Note.

Dean Rusk's Got Talent! By Laurel Blase

Dean Rusk Middle School is having a Talent Show! Orchestra & Dra-

ma teacher Mr. Christian says, “Come watch some really great sing-

ing, dancing, comedy, piano players, and other great acts per-

formed by your friends at Dean Rusk.” A panel of judges will pick

the winners and there will also be a "People's Choice" award. Each

vote by audience members for the "People's Choice" award costs

one dollar. The show is on Thursday, November 10th from 7 to 9:30

pm. It’s only $5 at the door to attend, bring extra money for con-

cessions. The concessions sold at intermission include soft drinks,

candy, and chips. The Talent Show is a fundraiser for the DRMS

spring musical. Come to the Dean Rusk Talent show and show sup-

port for your peers when they’re showing what they do best! ☺

This football season has had many ups and downs for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Jr. Chiefs. However, none was more heartbreaking than the 6th grade season. After suffering a 12-22 loss against Allatoona in their first game, the 6th grade Jr. Chiefs came back to win six of their next seven games. The Chiefs put up 139 points against their opponents 56 points. The Chiefs walked away from Osborne winning 42-0 and River Ridge 18-0. After losing to Creek view, the 6th grade came back the next week to beat Pope which guaranteed their spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately the 6th grade Jr. Chiefs were no match for John's Creek and their hopes of ending the season on a high note was shattered with a score of 10-6. The 7th grade Jr. Chiefs began their season with a loss to Allatoona as well, 12-22. This was just the beginning of a season full off heartache. Of the eight games played, the 7th grade Jr. Chiefs were only able to pull out wins against Chattahoochee (24-0) and Riverwood (1-0). Kell and River Ridge held the Chiefs offense scoreless while putting up 30 and 36 points. Unfortunately the 7th grade Jr. Chiefs failed to earn a spot in the playoffs but were invited to play against Campbell, pulling out a 28-6 win. The 8th grade Jr. Chiefs saw five wins and only three losses. Their season started much like the others with a 0-32 loss against Allatoona. The 8th grade Jr. Chiefs put up the most points at 173 with the opponents right behind them at 172 in their last seven games. The final game against Pope was needed in order to guarantee their spot in the playoffs. The 8th grade Jr. Chiefs were able to pull off a 25-24 win to make this possible. Unfortunately, their playoff future was also shattered. Centennial pulled away with a 36-6 win. After all heartache, the other schools should watch out next year. The Jr. Chiefs are going to be determined to make a come-back from such a rocky season. When the Chiefs put their minds to it they can accomplish anything.

Hi, I'm Lily! Today I'll be doing a review on the book Mrs. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Chil-

dren, by the author Ransom Riggs. But first…. Spoiler Alert! This review contains several

small spoilers about this book. If you're planning on reading this book blindly, you might

want to stop reading now. I've given you a fair warning, so now let's get to the book. This

book is purely amazing. It's a blend of pictures and completely original writing. But this story

is NOT for people who are scared easily. And if you ever want to read this book, I'd suggest

you should ask a parent to white out all of the curses it has. I found out it had so many the

hard way. Other than those few facts, I think this is an amazing book. And If I'm not mistak-

en, they made a movie on this book, too! It's supposed to be great! I'd suggest that you read

the book before you see it. So, If you like this review, why not give it a try?
