Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Rural Firefighting Operations Online Course work?

After enrollment, when your registration is accepted and course fee received by our Academy staff, within 7-days you will receive a copy of the course textbook, The Rural Firefighting Handbook, to begin the online learning program. This self-study online distance learning program has 17 learning Modules. The suggested method for students to take the course is to read a specific chapter(s) in the book, review the corresponding online module chalkboard presentation, and immediately take the online test for that module.

Here is a summary of the steps required:

1. Read the Chapter(s) in the Rural Firefighting Handbook that corresponds to the learning module. (For example, read Chapters 1 and 2 prior to reviewing the online chalkboard presentation for Module 1). See attached sheet that outlines the correct chapter(s) for each given learning Module.

2. Log in to the online chalkboard and attend the learning module presentation, which is a narrated video presentation.

3. After attending the full learning module presentation, immediately take the online test for that learning module. Each individual learning module test is “open book,” with a 45 minute time limit. To move on to the next module, you must first pass the module test. You may take an individual module test as many times as you would like, until you achieve a passing grade of at least 70%. Note that the online course chalkboard will only allow you to review modules and take module tests in sequential order (i.e., Module 1 prior to Module 2, Module 2 prior to Module 3, etc.). You must pass all 17 module tests to receive a certificate of completion.

Also note that after you are logged in, if the Chalkboard detects no activity after 60-minutes, it will automatically log you off. If this happens, you will need to re-log into the online chalkboard.

Do I need to read the book? Or, can I just attend the online chalkboard module reviews?

Module tests should not be taken unless the appropriate chapter(s) from the textbook are fully read and understood. The online chalkboard module presentations are not a replacement for reading the book — the chalkboard presentations are complementary to reading the book.

Can I skip the online module chalkboard presentation and immediately take the online module test?

Once logged-in, if desired, the student can skip the online learning Module chalkboard review, and proceed to directly take the Module test. However, in order to have a better chance at passing each learning module test, it is highly recommended that the student first read the appropriate chapter(s), then attend the online chalkboard learning module, and immediately take the online test.

In what timeframe must I complete the course? The student has six months to complete the Rural Firefighting Operations Online Course program, from start to finish. If you do not complete the course within the six month period, the online chalkboard system will automatically grade you, and you will either pass or fail. Even if you pass the course, you will not receive a certificate of completion. If you fail the course, you must repurchase the entire program if you desire to continue.

What is the passing grade for the course?

The passing grade for the entire course — all 17 modules — is 70% or above. Completing all 17 module tests is a requirement to complete the course.
