Micah Hyde was sitting and watchingNFL preseason action on the evening ofAug. 8 when a thought popped into hishead: In about 24 hours, he would be oneof those guys on the TV screen.
It was a weird feeling, he said in atelephone interview. You play all your lifetoward this.
Indeed, Hyde the skinny youngster
who set 17 Fost or iaHigh School recordsand went on to becomesinewy strong and theBig Ten defensive backof the year as a seniorat Iowa was close toplaying his first gameas a cornerback for theGreen Bay Packers.
Yes, those Packers. The Packers of BartStarr, Ray Nitschke,
Paul Hornung, JimTaylor, Brett Favre, etal. The Packers whoso frequently chilled their opponents on
what became widely known as the FrozenTundra of Lambeau Field. The Packers forwhom the word dynasty first crept its wayinto sports vernacular in reference to the1960s teams coached by Vince Lombardi.
Other than in the quality of his own play, there is no next level for Hyde. He made itto footballs version of The Show.
Its just so unreal to me right now, hesaid in an interview in Fostoria prior to
heading to training camp in July. Ive beenthere, working with the vets and this andthat, and practicing. But I stil l wake up andIm like, Wow, Im truly blessed just by thefact that Im a Packer. I go back to draftday and it was a great feeling and I stillhave that every day when I wake up and
just think about it.Draft day was April 27, and the Pack-
ers selected Hyde in the fifth round, 159thoverall. It wasnt longbefore he was involved
in a rookie mini-campand organized teamactivities.
A couple of thegames most notablestars, quarterbackAaron Rodgers andlinebacker Clay Mat-thews III, play inGreen Bay. Hyde saidhe had his moment ofbeing star-struck, buthe knew that had to beput away quickly.
Ive been aroundsome pretty good ath-letes in my life and
gotten to see them play and even talkedto them and stuff like that, so I was kindof used to it, he said. I definitely wasntstanding there saying, Oh, my God, thatsAaron Rodgers. At the same time, to thisday, Im still, Oh, my God, Im a Packer.Youre kind of like, Wow, Im actually inthe same locker room as these guys Ive

watched on TV. Its a great feeling. But after five minutes of being in the
locker room, it was like, Im used toit.
Its strictly business. And thething is, in practice ... it didnt matterwho you were, you were going inwith the ones (first-stringers) ... youwere going against the No. 1 receiver, against Aaron Rodgers. (Defensivebacks coach Joe Whitt) threw every-body in there (in OTAs); it was amish-mash. I think that helped me out, too, in just getting used to it justpracticing with them.
Tom Grine, who coached Hyde atFHS and is now the schools principal, said he likes the mental approach the22-year-old has taken into his NFLopportunity.
I think hes aware of the fact thatthere are no guarantees, and thatsa good thing for him, Grine, whoplayed at Iowa in the 1970s, said. Thething about him is hes grounded andfocused Hey, Ive got a chancehere. I think I can make it.
Hes always had that tremendousself-confidence, which I dont thinkyou can understate. When you get tothat level, or even the Division I (col-lege) level, if you dont believe in your-self, if you start doubting yourself, itsgoing to be a long trip home. Youvegot to believe in yourself. You cantdepend on the coaches to give you thatconfidence, or your teammates. Itsgot to be from within. You know: Hey,I belong here. Im not going anywhere.Im going to make this team. I thinkthats a huge advantage for Micah.Hes so even-keeled. He doesnt get
too high; he doesnt get too low.Indeed, Hyde, whose friendly
demeanor does not allow him to comeoff as cocky, carries the attitude thatat the end of the day, its just footballand Ive been doing it my whole life,he said.
I know Im a young guy and I havea lot to learn, but at the end of the day,(other players) are really good, buttheyre not gods out there or anything,so I definitely feel I can compete withthem.
Hyde is the third FHS graduate toreach the NFL in the last 14 years.Safety Damon Moore, a fourth-roundselection of Philadelphia out of OhioState in the 1999 draft, played threeyears with the Eagles and one with theChicago Bears. Another safety, Rich-ard Newsome, who played collegiatelyat Michigan State, was a member ofthe New Orleans Saints in 2001 aftermaking the team as an undrafted freeagent.
Hydes mother, Pam Moore, whois married to Damon Moores olderbrother Clayton, is happy that herchild has a chance to do somethingto which hes long aspired.
Of course its exciting, but I knowthat ultimately hes got to make theteam, she said.
The first NFL cutdown date wasTuesday. The fina l one wil l be Sat-urday. The Packers will open theirseason Sept. 8 on the road against theNFC champion San Francisco 49ers,
to whom Green Bay lost in the playoffslast season.
I guess I just take it day by day,Pam Moore said. People ask me thesame question all the time, but I feellike he is so fortunate to have thishappening in his life. Of course, hesliving his dream right now. But evenif he didnt make the team or what-ever, what a great start in life. I lookat that. Hes doing something that somany young boys dream of doing andgetting a good start. I guess the main
focus for me is I want my child to behappy and healthy. I just want him tohave a successful life, regardless ofwhether its this or that or whateverit is. Its exciting, but at the same timeI think Im pretty clearheaded about it,and if the time comes that he makesthe team and hes able to play, Ill bethrilled for him.
While Hyde was a standout highschool performer in football, base-ball and basketball, his first love wassoccer. His travel-team sidekick inthat sport at a young age was AaronCraft, who moved from Fostoria toFindlay as a sixth-grader and hassince become a standout point guardfor Ohio States basketball team. Hydefirst latched onto football as a seventh-grader.
We always had these real goodtravel teams, Hyde said. It wasntlike going into seventh-grade footballI didnt know anything about football. But I always enjoyed soccer. I lovedit, but they didnt have a school teamand obviously footballs a big sport
here and I definitely wanted to playfootball, too.
I grew up here and knew aboutthe state championship teams and Igrew up with Theo (Grine), so coachGrine (Theos uncle) was alwaysaround. I knew I wanted to play forhim. I think Id have definitely playedfootball, but if soccer was in the springmaybe I wouldnt have played baseballor something like that.
Organized sports werent all thatHyde played as a youngster. As Grine
has often lamented, children of recenttimes seem less likely to play infor-mal sports outside in their free time thereby developing physical skills as they are to sit down with videogames.
That wasnt Hydes way, though. He was more old school.
I cant tell you how crazy it was,the stuff we used to do, he said. Weused to just go find a field and putshoes out as end zones. It was Hydes,Munozes, Crafts, Dieblers, Cousins,Grines. ... It literally had to be dark, for us not to see the football, to stop

Though the roster size remainsmodest, it may be something to buildon for St. Wendelin.
After a few years of their playersnumbering in the low teens and inju-ries prompting the cancellations of afew games, the Mohawks enter the2013 season the schools 90th with a roster of 21.
The key to the influx is a freshman
class of 12 that will blend in with sixseniors, two juniors and a sophomore.Certainly, it will be a baptism of fire
for the youngsters, but second-yearcoach Jim Bodart likes the guidancetheyre getting from the experiencedupperclassmen, along with the pros-pects for this season and the directionthe program may be taking.
Hopefully, were in a turnaround,Bodart said. Thats what were tryingto pursue. Weve got a lot of learningto do, but I think well have the oppor-tunity to put some Ws after the names
on the schedule.St. Wendelin is entering its second
full season as a member of the Michi-gan-based Christian Athletic Leagueof America, which mainly includes
teams composed of youngsters whoare homeschooled or who attendschools that do not offer football.Their rosters sizes are comparable tothat of the Mohawks.
They are very well-disciplinedteams, Bodart said. You can tell thatthe coaching staffs take the time toteach them fundamentals. You dontsee a lot of fancy offense from them,
and I dont mean that in a derogatorymanner. Thats actually complimen-tary in my eyes because I think some-times as coaches we get too caught upin the Xs and Os and not as much in
the lets go play a game. The Mohawks posted a 2-5 record
last season, with their wins comingin the last two games of the season. Those two contests saw St. Wende-lin, which had seen its 14-man rosterwhittled by injuries, claim victoriesin eight-player games permitted bythe CALA.
This years number s wouldn t
appear to put eight-man games inthe outlook, and Bodart looks for hisclub to be competitive in conventional

COACH: Jim Bodart, 2nd year(2-5)LAST YEAR: 2-5LAST LEAGUE TITLE: 1991OFFENSIVE SCHEME: Pistolwing
DEFENSIVE SCHEME: 4-4STRENGTHS: Bodart speaksquite highly of a six-man senior
class that hasperseveredthrough toughtimes and isproving helpfulto a 12-playergroup of fresh-man that willprovide depththat hasnt beenpresent in recentyears. Experi-ence should helpin the transi-
tion from a big-play offense to onebased on ball control.WEAKNESSES: With fresh-men composing 57 percent ofthe 21-man roster, theyll haveto grow up quickly and learn onthe fly in order to give at least anoccasional rest to upperclassmenwho will be relied upon heavilyin all phases of the game. At least
nine players may rarely come offthe field.

OFFENSE
According to guard TrentWhetsel: I think well do a littlemore running this year and try topower through and just kind of basi-cally put the ball down their throats. We all have heart and were all hereto win and, of course, to win you
have to have touchdowns.
DEFENSE
According to linebacker ColeWilliams: It all depends on theplayers intensity and I hope thateach of our players plays with a bigheart. We all want to win, so hope-fully were all aggressive.
Bodart hopes things are on themove in terms of numbers witha freshman class of 12 bolster-ing this years roster to 21. Thenumbers will help St. Wendelinpractice more effectively, whichshould translate well in terms ofexecution. While Bodart is pleased
with the leadership provided by hisseniors, some will have to step upin production to compensate forthe graduation losses of skill play-ers such as Zach Miller and AustinReinhart.

It does make for good competi-tion, Bodart said of the CALA. Ithink this season, were young butweve got much better numbers andI think thats going to give us someopportunities in games that maybewe didnt have last year. The kidswere in great shape, but any time youask a kid to perform for four quartersin the games of football, both sidesof the ball, kickoffs, punt returns andeverything, youre asking a lot.
I think in those last few games,
where we had the opportunity to play8-on-8 with the CALA allowing us todo that, that gave us equal numberswhere we had a few kids on the side-lines and we could sub a coachthem up on the sideline and sendthem back in kind of thing.
Whi le Bodar t expects the entireroster to be involved on game nights, certain players will still be countedon in every regard, injuries remain apart of the sport and the coach wantseveryone to be ready to do whatever
is necessary. As we went through camp andthat first week of double-session con-ditioning, about Thursday everybodywas getting tired of conditioning,Bodart said. Everybodydoes gettired of conditioning. I took a minuteaway from our running and condi-tioning and pulled them into a quickhuddle and I started by asking one byone, How many plays were you offthe field last year? A lot of times youwill hear kids at other schools talkabout playing all but 10 plays. Thats
a lot of plays for high school kids. Yourun through that list of six seniorsand you can probably count on twohands the number of plays they wereoff the field last year.
The big thing for me was to givethese freshmen a wakeup call that wedo all of this because on game nightyou may play the whole game. Theresno two-platoon, theres no offensivegroup and defensive group. This year,it should change a little bit, obviously. We should get some opportunities to
get some kids off the field. But actu -ally, nine kids are going to carry thebrunt of this team and were goingto have to mix in some freshmen tomake this whole thing happen.
Th e im proved nu mb ers wi llhelped the Mohawks in practice asthe season goes along. Unlike inrecent years, 11-on-11 sessions essen-tially are possible.
Thats going to make the prac-tices much more productive, Bodartsaid. Last year with the numberswe had, we practiced what I callhalf-line. Wed go center on over onone side of the ball then youd flipand youd do the other half center on
over. Granted, you get a lot of goodreps that way. Its a quicker process.Youre not dealing with the backside of the line. But in turn, you losethat back side of the line, downfield-blocking practice, things like that. Itbecomes a lot more difficult to getin. This year, were going to be able
to get some nice looks at kids andwhat theyre doing on the back sideof the play.
Bodart said he and his staff havereceived plenty of help in team man-agement from the six seniors.
Every single one of them deservesthe title of team captain, he said. They all lead in their own different
way, but they all t ake charge.Bodart wants his freshman
class, almost all of whom attendedthe lower grades at St. Wendelin,
to absorb what they learn from theupperclassmen and carry it forwardtoward building strength for the pro-gram.
Its a good group of kids, he sa idof the freshmen. Theyre very close-knit. I think you get that here at St.
Wendelin, even more than at mostschools. You get a pretty tight bondof kids just because the classes areso small.
Lost to graduation are big-armedquarterback Zach Miller and speedyrunning back Austin Reinhart, whohas gone on to play at John CarrollUniversity.
Bodart expects this year s club tobe steady if unspectacular.
Were a pretty fundamentallysound group, he said. I dont think
were going to have the passing attackwe had last year, w ith the abilit y tothrow the big ball. But I think itsreally going to set up to be a sound,ball-control type of team.
Theyre persistent. Theyre thetype of kids who are going to go to
work very blue collar. Were goingto be pounding the ball at people. Ithink we have the ability to be morephysical than we have been in thepast. And with the little bit of depth
were deve loping here and gett ingsome rest for some of these kids, Ithink its going to give us the oppor-tunity to really have a ball-controltype of offense. With the type ofkids weve got and the disciplinethey demonstrate, well be able toplay sound defense and control the
ball on offense.Taking over at quarterback will besenior Brad Buhrow, though fresh-man Cyle Smith could enter the con-
versat ion when hes f ully recoveredfrom an injury.
We may make some changesthere as we go forward, but (Buhrow)is a great athlete and I trust him, andthose are two things you need atquarterback, in my opinion, Bodartsaid.
Senior fullback Brady Rutter willget a number of carries after impress-ing Bodart in 2012 in his return tofootball after not having played sincehis junior-high years. Senior Cole
Wil liams and freshman Joel Lopezlook to be the wingbacks with juniorDonovan Scudder at tight end andsophomore Justin Walter at split end.
Junior Rob Park will center anoffensive line that will also includeseniors Caleb Colburn and A.J.
Turne r at the tackl es and sen iorTrent W hetsel and freshman DevinFrankart, a transfer from New Riegel,at the guards.
The Mohawks will line up Fran-kart and Park at the defensive tack-les and Colburn and Turner at thedefensive guards in their 4-4 align-ment. Buhrow, Whetsel, Williamsand Scudder will be the l inebackers.Rutter and Lopez will be the corner-backs and Walter will be the safety.
Bodart said he wont project awon-lost record aga inst competi -
tion that, in addition to the CALAschools, will include Arcadia, Cory-Rawson and Hardin Northern fromthe Blanchard Valley Conference. Buthe expects the senior class to leadan effort in which the Mohawks puttheir best foot forward.
I talk a lot about the tradition ofSt. Wendelin football, Bodart said. This is the 90th season of St. Wen-delin football; we say, Continue thetradition, keep it moving forward.
This is a g reat program to be a partof. Those (seniors) are a great exam-ple of that. There have been somepretty lean years around here.
I think its great that weve got
this young freshman class for theseseniors. Its a great group of kids forus to say, All right, Ive got these 12kids who are going to be here for thenext four years and theyre going
to learn great things from a senior
class who will show them the way
to become a St. Wendelin Mohawk
football player.

Fostoria High School coach JimKelly is all about the process.
As the Redmen near the start of the2013 campaign, he is focusing on whathe and his staff need to do to restorethe program to its winning ways.
After posting an 0-10 mark lastseason in his first year with the team,Kelly admitted that at times it was astruggle to get maximum effort from
his players. He said the offseason hasbrought an increase in weight roomattendance and the players are start-ing to see the value of their investmentin the program.
Week 10 last year, we talked aboutwe have to become ment al ly andphysically tough back to the daysof how it used to be here, he said. And its easy to say those things, butit takes time to do it. We still have a
ways to go. Thats the approach wevetaken and just getting guys to under-
stand theyve got to buy in and whentheyre here, theyre investing time. When you invest something, it meansmore to you. Thats where were at andwere taking steps, definite ly in theright direction.
Kelly has history working bothfor and against him. The FHS foot-ball program is steeped in tradition, which brings certain expectat ionsevery year, even though it has fallenon hard times in recent years.
The Redmen are 8-32 over their
last four seasons since going 10-2 andadvancing to the second round of thestate playoffs in 2008 under the lead-ership of All-Ohio senior Micah Hyde, who is now a defensive back for theGreen Bay Packers.
Winning takes care of many thingsand Kelly realizes that. He also under-stands that before his team can walk,it will first have to crawl.
The first thing is winning breedssuccess, he said. We know we needto win. That takes time, but we are
making some strides there. Our goalis to be competitive. Our goal is to bephysically tough with anybody we playand that takes time, but were getting

stands that before his team can walk,it will first have to crawl.
The first thing is winning breedssuccess, he said. We know we needto win. That takes time, but we aremaking some strides there. Our goalis to be competitive. Our goal is to bephysically tough with anybody we playand that takes time, but were gettingthere.
So far this season, Kelly has seen adifference in his team. The time spentin the weight room has helped sometake ownership in the program andmade them want to work harder tomake the group successful.
I think there is the accountabil-ity (this year), Kelly said. You haveto be in the weight room because
you have to train to prevent injuriesand to get stronger and to get faster. The commitment part and just beingaccountable of being there is probablythe biggest thing. I think because ofthe accountability, were more disci-plined, too.
Offensively, FHS will have a dif-
ferent look than it has had in recentyears. After averaging just 7.9 pointsper game in 2012 and being shut outthree times, the Redmen will transi-tion from a pass-heavy, spread schemeinto a base I-formation team and bemuch more run-dominant.
Kelly, who ran the I-formationduring his time as head coach atLakota prior to taking the reins atFHS, said the decision to switch wasdue to a change in personnel and toalign the scheme with his personal
philosophy as a coach. Were going to be an I team, hesaid. We kind of finished the year
with that last year. Again, its physicalfootball. For us, we feel l ike weve gotguys that we can run the ball with andthrow the ball out of that. That s whowe are; thats Fostoria football.
The theme for us is physical.Weve got to learn how to be physi-cal. Some weeks we may not be where
I want us to be, but were going to getthere and over time thats where wehave to be.
Senior Deante Lincoln welcomesthe change on the offensive side of theball. The 6-foot, 255-pound tackle saidthe run game was almost non-existentlast year and the team had to hangits hat on passing, which put morepressure on the offensive line in passprotection.
Were mainly going to run, Lin-coln said. Our teams a lot better from
last year. Were more disciplined. Our offensive line, its going tolook pretty good this year. Weremore disciplined. Were not going tohave the quarterback hit that manytimes. Youre going to see a lot morerunning.
Juniors dominate the skill posi-tions on the offensive side of the ball.Dom Fuller will be under center forthe Redmen in his first year as thefull-time starter. Alex Navarro andMaurice Haskins will start in thebackfield, with Juan Mendez and
Deandre Cannon getting the nod atthe wide receivers and Eric Strubleanchoring the tight end spot.
FHS will be young up front, withfreshman Gage Scott starting atright guard and sophomores BrystanBaeder and Gabe Thompson startingat center and right tackle, respec-tively. The left side will be handledby seniors Micah Randall at tackleand Caleb Peace at guard.
Defensively, the Redmen are goingto stay in the 50 front they utilized
last season. Despite giving up 46.4points per game and allowing 60 ormore four times, Kelly said the 50 isin line with the type of football teamhe wants to have: physical.
We actually run the old Fostoria50, he said. One of the things thatsgreat is everybody around here, allmy junior high coaches, my varsitycoaches, they all love it. Especiallythe kids because its Fostoria. Itsan attacking defense that gets afterpeople and thats what were going to
develop to be.A major change in the defense thisyear has been a transformation inattitude from what it was last season, according to Navarro. Navarro, a5-11, 220-pound linebacker, said thedefense has been more of a unit and isworking better together to keep eachother up and not allow negativity tobreak them down.
Defensively were doing better,Navarro said. This year, everyonesfocused. Theyre giving their all. Wehelp each other if we have a mistake.
If we have a mistake on defense, every-one keeps their heads up.
Overall, our defense is getting
better each day and every day. Wehave some freshmen, some sopho-mores. Were a young team defensivelyand offensively, but other than thatour players are working hard. Theyrenot showing any weaknesses. Eventhe freshmen, theyre stepping up alot. Were trying to bui ld this program
back up.S e n i o r s
wil l be askedto lead alongthe defensivefront with Lin-coln at tackle,K e e g a nGreen at endand DeandreBu n ley a tnose guard.T h o m p s o nw i l l s t a r topposite Lin-coln as theother tackleand fe l lows o p h o m o r eJordan Math-ias will startat the other end spot.
Sophomores J.J. Fuller andRolando Silva will anchor the middleof the defense as the linebackers.Cannon and freshman Jayden Stantonwill be the cornerbacks, while Fuller
and Mendez shore up the back end ofthe unit as the safeties.
In addition to physicality offen-sively and defensively, Kelly and hisstaff are coaching effort more thanever. He said that because of theinvestment so many of the playershave made, it makes it harder for themto quit and harder to give less thantheir best effort.
In order for the Redmen to continu-ally improve on a consistent basis, hesaid the players have to be willing to
sacrifice for the good of the team.Effort, he said of what held FHS
back at times last season. And thesecond answers effort and the thirdanswers effort. Our effort was notwhere it needed to be.
I think it comes down to this: Ifyou put, again, time into this thing,
then when it gets tough in games you
still fight and you stil l give effort. We
cannot quit. Its physically and men-
tally tough, no quit, and thats the kind
of teams were going to have here. No
matter how long it takes, were going
to get it the way we need it.
O v e r -
all, Kelly is
pleased with
the progress
his team has
made since
the end of the
2012 season.
However, he
is by no means
satisfied. Heknows it will
take wins to
restore the
pride of Fos-

football. Until his team is ready to
handle the responsibility of carrying
on that tradition, he expects to see
some simple things from them.
They have to believe in eachother, he said. I expect my team to
play physical, to play hard, to give
great effort no matter what is thrown
at them during the game. I expect
them not to get down. I expect people
to be proud of our effort, going out and
just being physical.
Weve got to move forward in the
beliefs we have, which are getting
mentally and physically tough and juststay at it day after day. Be patient, but
be firm about, Hey this is where were
going and this is where were headed
no matter how long it takes. Were
going to get there. It takes time, but
thats what well do.

ARCADIA Nearly every foot-ball team has to overcome adversity ofsome kind at some point in a season.
One would think Arcadias luckwould run a little better in 2013 afterthe amount of adversity it faced lastseason, but injuries suffered by twokey players in the teams first scrim-mage let it know that wouldnt be thecase.
The Redskins faced adversity inmany ways last season, from losing16 seniors from the previous yearsteam that qualif ied for the Division VIplayoffs to getting a new head coachonly 1 months before the seasonstarted. Still, they rallied to learn anew system and finished with a 4-6overall record, including 3-6 in theBlanchard Valley Conference.
Second-year coach Pat Gehrischwanted his players to be confident lastyear despite their obvious obstacles,
and he was backed up in that ventureby senior quarterback Casey Mock.
Losing a standout such as Mockwas going to be an obstacle for Arca-dia as it was, but the story took ona new twist when sophomore Chad
Baker, the leading candidate to suc-ceed Mock as Arcadias triggerman, suffered a broken leg and seniorSawyer Kieffer, the teams top return-ing receiver, went down with a kneeinjury. Kieffer should eventually beback in action.
Even had Baker stepped right in asquarterback, Gerisch wanted to see achange in the Redskins offense.
Gehrisch plans to stick with thespread offense, but he aims to have amore balanced attack.
Last year we found ourselves
throwing the ball out of necessity alot, Gehrisch said. We want to runthe ball more, but well try to run theball out of the spread.
Kieffer would have been next inline to play quarterback after Baker, but the Redskins will likely now turnto freshman Austin Bohn or juniorDillon Conine, a late arrival to theteam in the summer. Kieffer couldstill see action under center.
Kieffer was Arcadias No. 2 receiver

BLOOMDALE For Elmwoodfootball head coach Brian Cooper, itsall about having conidence heading intothe 2013 season.
After finishing 4-6 and 2-5 in theNorthern Buckeye Conference lastseason, Cooper hopes to change theRoyals mentality of were supposedto lose anyway that has plagued theteam in recent years.
Weve always had the kids in theright positions, I believe, but its alwaysbeen a here we go again mentality, sothats where I would say our biggestconcern is right now. Whats going tohappen if a team scores on us first?Whats going to happen if we makea mistake first? said Cooper, who isentering his second season at Elmwood.
The Royals have several playersreturning from last season who canhelp change that mindset and instillconfidence in a team that hasnt had a
winning record since 2008.Senior wide receiver Aaron Arnold(6-foot-5, 200 pounds) brings size andexperience to a young offense.
Hes always had the ability, butIve seen a confidence in him kind of
grow and really take charge of hey,if the balls within five feet of me, Imgoing to be the only one to come up withit, Cooper said.
Arnold compiled 177 receiving yardson eight receptions last year, along withthree touchdowns. As a sophomore, hewas second on the team in rushingand receiving yards with 355 and 235,respectively.
During the summer, Arnold com-peted in the National Football League
High School Player Development 7-on-7tournament for the Cleveland Browns. He advanced through regional qualify-ing in Defiance and Cleveland beforemaking the inal roster, which competedagainst teams rom around the country.
I think that helped him realizethat Im not just small-town Elmwoodanymore, Cooper said. I can still dosome things and, hopefully, I can kind

DEFENSE
According to defensive nosetackle Sawyer Haines: Condi-tioning is going to be a big dealsince were playing both sides ofthe ball. But its really importantthat we get penetration.
If the Royals can utilize theirweapons on offense and protecttheir young backfield, they canbecome a force in the NorthernBuckeye Conference. The offen-sive and defensive lines should beElmwoods bread and butter, butfatigue could become a factor late
in games due to the number o play-ers going both ways. A strong non-conference start could boost theRoyals confidence heading intoconference play.

OFFENSE
According to receiver NickKairys: How well we do willbe determined by how we playtogether as a team. Everybodypoints to the guys we lost (gradu-ated). But the program has a goodtradition.
DEFENSE
According to nose guardAndy Strzesynski: We have tobe aggressive, use our quicknessand swarm to the ball. We donthave any superstars on this team. Its going to take a team effort.
Findlay cant just reload, notafter losing the arsenal of offen-sive skill and talent the Trojansdisplayed last season. But Ritzlerand his staff dont use the wordrebuild either. The schedule got
tougher and a Findlay team shorton varsity experience will have togrow up fast under the Friday nightlights. But theres a lot of compe-tition for playing time, and thatoverall depth could translate intoa competitive if not overpoweringteam on the field.

FINDLAY The names andfaces change as players come and gothrough the ranks of Findlay Highsfootball program.
But as far as Mark Ritzler is con-cerned, some things are forever con-stant.
A lot of things change from year toyear, but our goals remain the same,Ritzler said.
Our job is to go out there and tryto do the best job we can, compete aswell as we can and try to win footballgames. Its Friday night football, sothere really are no moral victories.
If ever there was a season whenRitzler might be tempted to temperexpectations, this would be it.
Graduation hit the team hard, costing the Trojans 19 of 22 startersand 27 total players from a skilledand talented class that went 10-1,won a Three Rivers Athletic Confer-
ence championship and qualified forthe Division I playoffs in 2011, thenbecame the first team in school his-tory to average more than 50 pointsa game during last years 8-2 season.
Six of those players earned All-
Ohio honors. Headlining that groupwas record -se tting runni ng backVance Settlemire, who set single-sea-son (1,934 yards, 33 TDs) and career(3,260, 53 TDs) marks for yards rush-ing and touchdowns.
Settlemire and triple threat JosephDavidson, who intercepted six passesand had 32 tackles on defense, caught19 passes for 392 yards and six TDs,and earned a scholarship from Bowl-
ing Green State University for hispunting ability (37.2 avg.), were sec-ond-team all-state selections.
University of Toledo recruitAustin Niswander (30 tackles, 206yards receiving, 100 rushing), Notre
Dame baseball signee Jimmy Orwick(33 catches, 677 yards, 6 TDs) andfour-year linebacker Devin Dennard, the Trojans leader in career tackles, were third-team All-State, and offen-sive lineman Bryce Burnside earnedspecial mention All-Ohio.
Ritzler, though, is not one to lowerthe bar.
We talked to the kids in January, and one thing we said was we are not
going to use the word rebuild, Rit-zler said.
Were not going in thinking, Lets
Standardsstay samefor Trojans

COACH: Jeremy Nutter, 4th year(20-11)LAST YEAR: 4-6 overall, 3-4Midland Athletic LeagueLAST MAL TITLE: 2011OFFENSIVE SCHEME: Spread
DEFENSIVE SCHEME: Mul-tipleSTRENGTHS: Once again this
season, Nutterconsiders hisoffensive lineto be the teamsstrength andhe hopes theChieftains willbe able to estab-lish a consistentground gamewith senior

WEAKNESSES: Hopewell-Loudon has just 35 players thisseason, so depth could becomean issue as well as having anunproven quarterback.
By MATT NYESPORTS WRITER
BASCOM Hopewell-Loudons2012 season was a roller coaster ride,to put it mildly.
With one of the best offensive play-ers in the Midland Athletic League inMark Bouillon, the Chieftains foundthemselves in contention to win manyof their games, but in regard to theones that got away, one or two playsper outing defined their entire season.
They finished with a disappoint-ing 4-6 record overall and just 3-4 inthe MAL. However, a new season hasarrived in 2013 and the mission is tomove on.
There were a lot of momentsduring last season where it was criti-cal that we maintained control of theball, H-L coach Jeremy Nutter said.We just had that critical turnover oryou just didnt get enough for the firstdown. Also, defensively, more oftenthan not we just didnt make enoughplays when we needed to. We lookedback at last season and we will learnfrom it.
The fourth-year coach has to comeup with some answers on the offensiveside of the ball, as the Chieftains lost
Bouillon and quarterback Alec Gregg, along with seven other seniors.
Bouillon led the Chieftains in offen-sive production, tallying more than1,500 yards of total offense with 18touchdowns.
You dont replace a Mark Bouil-lon, its just tough to do, Nutter said. You take the pieces you have and wedo what our kids are good at. I thinkwe do have some ta lent on this teamthis year, though.
The talent he is speaking of begins
with the ground game, as senior tackleWeston Hill (6-foot-4, 275 pounds)and senior center Adam Foos (5-11,220) will bolster a big, physical g roupup front trying to open holes for seniortailback Cody Malone.
Joining Hill and Foos will be juniorChristian Potteiger at center withsenior Wesley Armon at guard andsophomore LRay Burns at tackle.
Weston Hill is the best offensive

will start eightseniors onoffense andsix on defense, which is a plusfor a team withfewer than 30players. A tal-ented group offreshmen figureto challenge
establishedplayers for posi-tions.
WEAKNESSES: There isalways a learning curve with anew offensive scheme and theRaiders will be experiencingthat to some degree early in theseason. Although numbers arenot devastatingly low, depth is acause for concern on both sidesof the ball. An injury or two atkey positions could derail anotherwise promising step for theprogram.

OFFENSE
According to tight end JackRaymond: I think passings goingto be a big part. ... The line is open-ing up holes and protecting reallywell up front so weve got every-thing we need.
DEFENSE
According to defensivetackle Jordan Smith: Weve gota big front three. ... Our outsidelinebackers, they can really fly. Ithink thats really going to help uscontain and keep everything intoour big guys.
The Raiders look to take astep forward in year two of Vodi-kas reign. A large contingent ofseniors has brought a change inattitude and discipline has beenmuch improved so far this season, according to several players. A newoffense will aim to showcase play-ers strengths and several freshmenwill get the opportunity to provethemselves at the varsity level andcould make key contributions. Afavorable non-conference schedulecould help build confidence early inthe season.

KANSAS In his second yearat the helm of the Lakota footballprogram, Dave Vodika has noticed amajor change among his players.
Those returning from last yearssquad and the ones joining for the firsttime have come equipped with a dif-ferent mentality this season, or as hecalls it, a different attitude.
After a 2-8 season in 2012, Vodikais still in the process of changing thelosing culture that had beset Lakotaover the past several seasons. TheRaiders are 3-27 since 2010 and havelost 23 straight Midland AthleticLeague games dating back to 2009.
Despite those numbers beingstacked against him, Vodika said hehas seen a different side of his teamthis summer that has not been therein the past.
Overall, I would say I can takethese guys and push them ten timesharder than before, he said. Every-bodys willing to say OK, if they saywe can do this we must be able to doit. Attitude-wise, Im just so very, verypleased.
It is not just the head coach who
feels that way either. Players arestarting to see the difference in theirteammates and themselves, and itsinstilling confidence that things canchange.
Its probably the attitude, seniorJack Raymond said about the differ-ence between previous teams andthe 2013 squad. A couple years ago,we werent able to condition like weshould have. Everybody had a badattitude. Now were working hard andcoach is making sure of that. And Ithink now were actually ... starting toenjoy it because we know its going tohelp us. Its not just to punish us, itsto make us better.
One thing working in the Raidersfavor is a large senior class. Although
there are just 23 players listed on theroster, 10 of them will play their finalseason this fall.
Lakota will start eight seniors onoffense and six on defense to bolsterunits that were some of the worst sta-tistically in the MAL last season. Theteam finished last in total offense andnext-to-last in total defense a year ago.
Colin Timmons returns at quar-terback after throwing for 234 yardsand three touchdowns with one inter-ception in limited time under centerin 2012. Kyle Below, Mac Flanagan,Jordan Smith and Bobby Arriagabring experience to the offensive line, while Raymond wi ll anchor the tight

welcome change from last seasonwhen the Senecas began the yearwith just one returning starter.WEAKNESSES: According toFox, the teams biggest weaknessis that the players are too criticalof themselves. If they have a badpractice, Fox says he finds thecoaching staff picking up thekids spirits rather than yelling, which is an unusual situation tosay the least.

TIFFIN After this school year, the Midland Athletic League willcease to exist. Tiffin Calvert coachTodd Fox would like to see his Sen-ecas claim the final league title.
And he just may have the personnelto do so.
The Senecas return nine starterson both offense and defense, includ-ing All-Ohio defensive tackle MarcusSomers (6-foot-1, 208 pounds), quar-terback Tyler Long and the entireoffensive line.
Im biased, but we return allfive starting offensive linemen, plusthe main two substitutes, so thats astrength, Fox said. But again, TylerLong at quarterback and our receivingcorps and their ability, we feel prettystrong on oense, that we can do a lotof g
