First 2 marathons in 2002
I was injured for both, but wasn’t yet tracking running mileage.

Learned some running rules
To prevent injuries, I learned 2 rules about how to increment mileage & intensity. I started tracking running miles in 2003 to stick with new rules.

Stuck to rules mostly in 2003
All went well until Philadelphia Marathon (broke rules to sneak it in and qualify for Boston). It worked, but I got hurt right after.

Training too rigid => Burnout
I stuck to the plan and didn’t listen to my body, so I burned out. There are several ways to listen to your body.

HR: 140Pace: 9:54 min/mile

If I’m running slower at my regular running HR, it means I’m fighting something and need to take it easy or rest.
HR: 140Pace: 11:28 min/mile
HR: 140Pace: 9:54 min/mile
Running to 140 BPM usually looks like this.
If I’m running slower to the same HR, I need to take it seriously. The day after this run, I got sick.

After 2 months off…
I broke another rule by getting my mileage up too quickly and got hurt again. This injury was the worst so far and I wasn’t recovering.

Moved to SF & resumed training
I stuck to all the rules this time and started acupuncture and getting gradually back into half marathons. Instead of focusing on speed as I’d done in the past, I started focusing on fun.
