After attending the Brandon Affiliate Summit the NRHA Representative brought up some rule changes and items for consideration. There has

been some rule changes and dollar changes in levels for the open riders. Make sure you double check the level changes for 2015.

Also new rules changes go into effect for all open classes, all people showing in the open class must have either a Professional designation, non pro designation, or youth designation. You can’t show in any open class with a General membership. This new designation is a declaration just like the non pro designation but obviously has questions pertaining to the professional designation. This will help people watching to know if this person trains for a living and gives lessons etc. It will keep the public from

wondering if each person accepts horses for training and coaching.

Also the Affiliate committee is meeting in mid November, at this meeting one of the things they have under consideration pertains to Rookie 1 and Rookie 2. They are proposing to have Rookie 1 and Rookie 2 both be affiliate classes. So Rookie 1 maximum earnings is $500 an this is still the affiliate class that qualifies for Rookie of the year. Rookie 2 maximum earnings of $1,500 will be just like any other affiliate classes and compete in Oklahoma at the NAAC.

The funds we receive from the AGLC help with the costs incurred to hold our Branch shows and clinics, to pay for our judges, to provide a venue and clinician for the Open Rider clinic and a various number of

other expenses that in turn benefit the entire membership.

This year, our casino dates are October 20th & 21st at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino in southeast Calgary. We are committed to provide volunteers for two these days in various positions at different times.

We welcome our membership to help fill these positions in order to ensure we have additional funds available for the coming season.

AGM & ElectionsReining Alberta is holding its annual AGM & Board of Directors elections during the weekend of the Open

Rider Clinic. It is our hope that this will allow many more of you to attend. Please stay tuned for exact date, time and location of the meeting.

Ask the JudgePattern Five from the Judges Chair

Pattern 5 is often a futurity pattern because it lends itself to high scores. There is one more maneuver in it, the separate figure eight, providing another scoring opportunity. The spins follow the circles, making it easier for the horse to start the spins dynamically and with speed. Plus the stops are only past the middle marker, again making them easier to score high on.

The pattern starts with three left circles. The judge wants to see the first circles achieve the cadence of fast circles as soon as possible. It is not correct to start slow and then get faster and faster as the circles progress. The horse must guide freely and willingly, without resistance. Any appearance of intimidation, such as the head unnaturally low, ears back, tail switching will lower the score. The horse must guide between the reins. Leaning into the circle with the rider holding the horse up or jerking the reins as a correction will reduce the maneuver score. Riders leaning far forward with the hand high and just behind the horse’s ears so they can bump the bridle with every stride will not be given credit for good circles.

The judge will be watching for the horse dropping out of lead with the hind legs for one or more strides. A penalty of one point per quarter circle must be given if this happens.

The transition to the small slow circle must happen at the center point of the arena, and there must be a distinct change of speed at this point. The cadence of the slow circle must be reached as soon as possible and stay constant throughout the small circle. Horses that continue to slow down and reach a super slow speed by the half or ¾ point of the circle will not be given credit. Slower does not mean better, a quality natural lope must be maintained to be considered good, (plus half ) or very good, (plus 1).

The judge will do a quick mental calculation averaging the quality of the three circles and give a maneuver score for the entire maneuver. For example if the first large fast is correct (Zero), the second large fast is good (plus half ) and the small circle is correct (Zero), average of the three is Zero.

Left spins are the next maneuver. The spin is judged first on correctness and then degree of difficulty. Degree of difficulty is speed. The faster the spin, that is still correct, the greater the degree of difficulty and the higher the score. However if the spin is not correct in form, more speed will reduce the score.

A reluctance to initiate the spin when the rider’s hand asks for it, a tipping of the head , opening the mouth, pinned ears or switching tail will reduce the score. The spin must have cadence, with the front feet striking the ground in an equal rhythm. The front feet should not hop around like a lope. The inside hind leg should be the pivot foot, and should not move. And the horse should stay in the same geographical location, not migrate to the out gate.

Expression, ears, mouth and tail should all show a positive attitude. This is particularly evident at the end of the spin. The horse should not come out of frame by lifting or tilting the head. The horse should be guiding off of the outside rein. The spin is not correct if the inside rein is significantly shortened, causing excess bend. The third and forth maneuvers are right circles and right spins, these should be mirror images of the left circles and spins.

Fifth is the figure eight. It should be run at the same speed as the large fast circles were. The change needs to be in the exact middle of the arena. One stride either way is acceptable giving the rider a three stride window

in which to execute the change. Too early and it is a penalty one, too late and its one penalty for every quarter circle. A quality lead change is where the horse stays straight, does not fling his hip in the new direction and does not elevate. Forward motion should not change. Like all maneuvers, to be considered plus half or plus one the rider must give minimal corrections. The horse can be guided with the rein hand, but should not be corrected by jerking or bumping.

Sixth is the stop and right roll back. Pattern placement is first in the judge’s eye. That means the horse guides around the end of the arena according the pattern description; a half circle at the end of the arena and then a straight line approach along the side of the arena staying at least twenty feet off the wall. Squaring the corners at the top of the arena reduces the degree of difficulty and the score. So does an approach that is nearly down the center of the arena.

The approach must be of gradual increasing speed which is guided by the rider. A horse the abruptly changes speed whether because of the rider or just runs off, will receive a lower score. The horse must go into the stopping position and hold the ground. It is not correct if a foot is lifted, or if the horse uses is front legs to stop. The rollback should be fluid and come out over the slide tracks. “U turns” will be judged as incorrect, minus half to one and one half. The three components of this maneuver, the approach, the stop and then the rollback will be averaged in the judge’s head and the score for the maneuver given to the scribe.

Penalties in this maneuvers are generally freeze ups and trot outs. To be a freeze up, the rider has to clearly ask for the roll back with the rein hand and the horse has so say “No”. Often accompanying the freeze is a backup, 5 steps back and penalty score zero is given.

Maneuver 7 is another stop and roll back, judged just like the first one. Maneuver eight is a stop and back. The back needs to be straight, without an open mouth or high head. Speed without resistance is difficult and deserves a plus score. The back must only be 10 feet long. The judge is careful to watch the entire back, because often riders back too far and the horse becomes resistant and the quality takes a nose dive. At the end of the back the rider must hesitate and indicate that the pattern is complete. A turn before the hesitation or petting the horse needs to be accessed as a penalty in the last maneuver.

Lyle is a carded judge for the NRHA, FEI, AQHA, APHA, and NRCHA. In addition to his judging expertise he also has over 30 years of experience training horses for reining and most western events; with multiple championships to his name.

The North Branch has wrapped up for another successful year in 2014. We had 6 shows and 4 clinics that we full and well attended!! Our sponsorship was fantastic again thank you to our sponsors and all our volunteers that make the North Branch happen! We held our August show at Whitecourt which was a trial on a double headed show and we had a great turn out from the North and Peace Branch!! A BBQ was held on Saturday evening which gave us all a chance to socialize..thank you to Ralph and Julie for hosting it!! Our last show at Heatherdown Hills Arena at Onoway we held our AGM. All committee positions were filled but the Chairperson, so if you are interested please let us know. Thank you to Sandra Prosko for all your hard work in the past...the north branch will miss you!

The Peace Country branch wrapped up its final show the middle of September with some new faces showing up in the show pen. Elaine Besuijen was kind enough to donate her time to judge and a couple of members took the opportunity to scribe.

Our regular show secretary was unable to be there, so Barb Letourneau stepped in and helped out in that position, doing a fabulous job. There was some hotly contested classes vying for high point with everyone looking forward to our awards banquet and AGM at the Whitelaw Hall, October 25th. As a small fundraiser, a cowboy challenge class was added at the end of the day. It did exactly what we hoped, attracting a few new competitors that just might start to play in the reining classes next year.

So here’s to the end of 2014 show season in the Peace Country and to looking towards 2015 with high expectations.

South BranchChairpersons Greetings

As this show season draws to a close, I can’t help but look back over the last year and what a whorl wind show season we’ve had. From an organizing perspective there have certainly been a few hiccups and surprises – with show and clinic date changes, cancellation of the Trainers Showcase, challenges with the concession, and of course always a factor – the weather! When I think about all that our committee did this year it’s hard to believe we crammed it all into one year, from our cold and snowy first show, to our first ever Regional Clinic with Ruben Vandorp, all the way to our final show.

I’d like to say a special thanks to my committee members over the last two years who have done such an amazing job and who have just been a pleasure to work with. Their enthusiasm, knowledge, and willingness to pitch in wherever needed was an invaluable asset to the branch (and certainly made my life a lot easier). They each brought so many unique skills to the committee and (as much as I thank them) I can’t thank them enough. Karen has worked tirelessly over the past two years with numerous behind the scenes tasks, introducing us to the online entry forms, helping with the newsletters and finding a smarter way to make them, not to mention many hours organizing ring smart, working the gate at the shows, and helping organize the concession.

Both Jessica and Kelly have brought their own flare to the Show Secretary position, they both have done a tremendous job for us and I thank my lucky stars every time I think how fortunate we were to have them step up as part of the committee. They have brought many ideas to the table in how to make the shows run better, be more fun, introduce new classes and awards, play with the schedule to make our shows more financially viable, encourage the introduction of the Regional Clinic, and many other “day-to-day” branch functions.

Sarah and Morgan did a phenomenal job sourcing class prizes for us, not an easy task with our limited budget. We were able to source many “new” and

different prizes for the shows, and I think they were met with positive responses. Morgan was able to bring a great deal of new and wonderful sponsors on board this year. Allowing us to offer many awards we could only have dreamed of! We hope that we can welcome many of them back for 2015 as well.

There have been many volunteers over the past few years that make a tremendous difference to our shows, and who we know we can always count on to rise far and beyond our expectations. While I hope they know who they are I would like to recognize them here as well. So, thank you Ron & Trudy Barnes, Don & Arlene Hepburn, Maxine & Mandy Whiteside, and Dianne Hibberd. You have done so many thankless tasks for us this year, and are usually greeted at the shows with a smile quickly followed by a clipboard to watch the gate, scribe, help at the show office, or work the concession. Why you still keep coming back I’ll never know!! To everyone else who has pitched in over the course of the year your help in our moments of need is never unappreciated, and we thank you for always stepping in and allowing us a moment of sanity to re-strategize and get going again!

To the trainers who have donated their time and worked MANY hours in the Judges chair – thank you! We are so blessed to have such great trainers in our industry who are happy to give back to their association and the grass roots membership never asking for anything in return. So thank you to our 2014 Judges: Carola Friesen, Amanda Antifaev, Tyrell Smith, Cheryl Mitchell, Austin Seelhof, and Natalie Weichel! Our shows truly couldn’t run without their support and time, so next time you see them please be sure to thank them for all they do.

I would also like to take a moment to thank all of you who attended our shows or clinic this year, your positive attitudes, patience, and willingness to roll with the punches is greatly appreciated. You’ve made these shows a lot of fun, and I hope a place where everyone feels welcome. Thank you all!

Committee

The South Branch still has a few important committee positions to fill. We are still looking for a Branch Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. If you are interested in taking on one of these rolls please contact Megan.

Unless these positions are filled before next year the Branch shows will have to be cancelled.

Awards Night

The South Branch Awards Banquet will be hosted on October 25, we are just finalizing the last details so please watch the website and facebook over the next few days for full details.

Calendars

South Branch fund-raising Calendars will be available for sale at the Awards Banquet, we will also make online purchases and Canada Post mailing available for any who would like it.

So please consider buying a 2015 Calendar and supporting the Association!!
