Who is this man on a mission?‘Run Geordie Run’ is the nickname given to Mark Allison, a regular guy from the North East of England with a huge heart for raising money for charitable causes, and a good pair of running shoes! He has previously run 874 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End in 2007 and followed that up with a 3100 mile run across USA in 2011.
What is Run Geordie Run Down Under with Benfield? The aim is simply to run 2600 miles across Australia and raise at least £50,000 for two charities that work tirelessly to enhance the lives of children and cancer patients in the North East of England; The Children’s Foundation and Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. Benfield are a family-run motor company founded in Newcastle in 1957. They are one of the sponsors who have made this mission possible.
Isn’t running that far impossible? Or crazy?Quite possibly. It means running 41 miles a day, for 70 days straight. That’s like running a whole marathon, then a half marathon, and rounding off with a two mile jog to cool down. Every day for over two months, in the heat of the Australian outback. To most of us, that would be utterly impossible, but to Run Geordie Run, that makes it worth trying to do. All in the hope that people will show our support for the charities he’s running for.
When is this happening? The race against time starts on Cottesloe Beach, Perth on October 16th 2013. With a huge slice of good luck and an unprecedented amount of effort (and hopefully not too many snake bites!), Run Geordie Run will arrive on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, 2600 miles later, on Christmas Eve 2013.
Why would anyone choose to run that far?Tragically, Mark lost both of his parents to cancer while he was just a young man. He has since spent 20 years raising funds for good causes in the North East of England. To date, thanks to the generosity of so many kind people, over £170,000 has been raised. This time, Run Geordie Run is hoping to raise at least £50,000. See the back page for ways to donate.
Mark writes: “I greatly appreciate people’s support and I never take it for granted. Receiving a tweet or seeing donations come in while I’m running will be like having the route in Australia lined with virtual supporters.“
Mark writes: “When you dedicate years of your life training for something as ambitious as this, it is unfathomable to think of failure.
To reach the finish line on time having raised at least £50,000 for the two charities will fill me with great relief and pride.”
SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!If you’ve been inspired and want to be part of making this mission a huge success, there are three ways you can help:
1. Shout about it!You’re holding 1 of 5000 leaflets printed. If you read it and pass it on, and connect with Run Geordie Run on Twitter or Facebook, you can play a huge part in helping us spread the word about this mission.
2. Cheer him on!Every message of support online or in person will spur Mark on to reach the finish line.
3. Make a donationThe simplest way to donate is online,uk.virginmoneygiving.com/rungeordierun. Details of other ways to donate are on the back of this page. Thank you.
THIS ISN’T JUST ONE MAN’S MISSION TO RUN 2600 MILES IN 70 DAYS.
It’s an incredible journey of courage shown by people battling cancer. It’s the passionate determination of people working to help children grow up healthy, happy and safe.
