Rules of Improvisation
![Page 20: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
1. Yes, and...
Often considered the main rule of Improv.
Do not negate or shut down other people's statements.
Instead, add on to them.
![Page 21: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
When “Yes, and...” is not used:
Scene: Fun with Friends
“Are you ready to skate?”“What are you talking about?
We’re not at a skating rink, we’re on a basketball court!”
![Page 22: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
The scene is killed.
A wall is put up and they are working against each other.
![Page 23: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
When “Yes, and...” is used:
Scene: Fun with friends
“Are you ready to skate?”“ ”
![Page 24: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Scene can develop.
They now have a place for the scene to go and are
“playing off each other”--not against each other.
![Page 25: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Try a scene of your own with and without “Yes, and....”
(without first)
![Page 26: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
2. Don’t have a plan.
•
• Be in the moment. • Don’t come in with a set agenda,
• Let the scene evolve.• Listen and react.
![Page 27: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
With an agenda:
Scene: After School
“Did you see what Antonio did in math class today?”
“Did I tell you I’m auditioning for American Idol? I’m going to sing
Whitney Houston.”
![Page 28: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Without an agenda:
Scene: After School
“Did you see what Antonio did in math class today?”
“ ”
![Page 29: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Try a scene of your own both ways.
![Page 30: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
3. Don’t try to be funny.
•
• Let the humor come naturally,• don’t force it.
![Page 31: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
When the humor is forced:
Scene: At the Mall
“What do you think of this jacket?”“Burpppp.”
![Page 32: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Scene can’t develop.
It may get a quick laugh but not much else.
![Page 33: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
4. Make the active choice.
•
• Audiences love action.
• Show rather than tell.
![Page 34: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Without the active choice:
Scene: After School
“We should go running later.”“Yes, but running is hard and I do get
tired easily.”
![Page 35: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
The active choice:
Scene: After School
“Ready to run?”“Let’s go...(pant, pant) Hey, slow down will you? I think I (pant) am getting a
(pant, pant) Ahhhhhh!!!” (falls to ground clutching side)
![Page 36: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Try a scene of your own with and without the active choice.
(without first)
![Page 37: Rules of improvisation](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022050705/5537e95a4a7959437c8b462e/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
