The participating teams, as the robot designers, are responsible for the safety of their robots. The teams must work and cooperate closely with the organizers to ensure the utmost safety of the contest. Safety must always be the top priority and it must be considered for all people involved in the contest as officials, participants or spectators in all circumstances. Teams are required to pay sufficient attention to the safety of their robots on this basis before applying to take part in the contest.

1. Outline of the Contest Paintball Robot is a game based on an actual paintball competition. The basic rule of the games is roughly same with the paintball competition. The robots are considered VICTORY when the robots can insert all of their flag into three (3) opposition’s flag station. Three (3) flags are provided for each team and must be preloaded to each robot before starting the game. Each match is contested by red and blue teams. A match lasts five minutes. Each team is represented by 3 operators responsible in controlling the robot via remote control, 3 pit crews responsible for setting up of the robots and an instructor. 2. Game Field Structure and Specifications 2.1 Game field.

2.1.1 The size of game field is 30000mm long and 15000mm width. 2.1.2 The game field is built on paved road (tar) in an open area. 2.1.3 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 1.

2.2 Flag Station

2.2.1 The Flag Station is made from wooden box with 300mm (H) x

300mm (W) x 300mm (L). 2.2.2 The center hole is 50mm in diameter and the depth is 300mm. 2.2.3 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 2.

2.3 Mountain Range

2.3.1 The Mountain Range is made from plywood. 2.3.2 The base of the Mountain Range is 1100mm. 2.3.3 The top of the Mountain Range is 500mm. 2.3.4 The height and the length of the Mountain Range are 200mm

and 12000mm, respectively. 2.3.5 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 3.

2.4 Mountain Peak 2.4.1 The Mountain Peak is made from plywood. 2.4.2 The base of the Mountain Peak is 3386mm. 2.4.3 The top of the Mountain Peak is 2000mm. 2.4.4 The height and the length of the Mountain Peak are 400mm and

1000mm respectively. 2.4.5 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 4.

2.5 Medic Area

2.5.1 The Medic Areas are located in the Starting Zone. 2.5.2 The Bunker is placed in the Medic Area. 2.5.3 The size of Medic Area is 1000mm (W) x 1000mm (L).

2.6 Bunker 2.6.1 The bunker size is 1000mm (W) x 500mm (H) x 12mm (T) 2.6.2 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 5.

2.7 Starting Zone

2.7.1 The size of Starting Zone is 10000mm (L) x 1000mm (W).

2.8 Bush 2.8.1 The Bush is a combination of vase and plywood tree. 2.8.2 The typical diameter for vase is 350 mm. The typical vase height

is 230 mm. 2.8.3 The specification for plywood tree is 400mm (L) X 260mm (H) X

10 (W). 2.8.4 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 6.

2.9 Command Zone.

2.9.1 The command zone stage is placed near the game field. 2.9.2 Only one instructor from each team is allowed to give an

instruction from command zone. 2.9.3 The specification for command zone is 2000mm (L) X 500mm

(W).

2.10 Specifications for the Flag 2.10.1 The Flag pole is made from standard PVC pipe with diameter

20mm. 2.10.2 The length of the pole is 600mm. 2.10.3 The size of flag is 200mm (L) X 150mm (W). 2.10.4 The detail specifications are shown in Figure 7.

3. Game Procedure 3.1 Length of a match

3.1.1 Each match lasts for FIVE (5) minutes. 3.1.2 In the following cases, a match might end in less than five (5)

minutes. 3.1.2.1 When the VICTORY is achieved. 3.1.2.2 In the event of disqualification. 3.1.2.3 When the referees decide that continuation of the

match is impossible.

3.2 Setting of Robot 3.2.1 Only three robots are allowed to enter the game field. However,

reserve robots are allowed to be replaced, if the main robot could not function before the game is started. The replacement of robot must be done during the setting time.

3.2.2 One minute is provided for setting up the robot before the game start.

3.2.3 Three members (Pit crew) of each team may engage in setting of robot.

3.2.4 Any team that fails to complete setting of robots in one minute shall be able to resume the setting work once the match has begun inside the medic area.

3.2.5 Each robot will be given MAXIMUM 30 pallets only. The balance of the pallets will be collected after each game.

3.3 Deployment of the robot and team members at the start of the match. 3.3.1 The Paintball Robot shall be placed in the Start Zone. 3.3.2 Team member who are responsible for controlling the Paintball

Robot must wait at the operator zone. They are not allowed to start inside the game field.

3.3.3 The instructor must give an instruction at the command center.

3.4 Starting the Paintball Robot 3.4.1 A team member shall start the Paintball Robot by a remote

control operation. 3.4.2 After the robot leave the starting zone, the pit crew’s member

who performs the starting operation shall immediately leave the Field.

4. Competition Tasks 4.1 Once the match has begun, each team shall try to complete both of the

tasks;-

4.1.1 The task of killing the enemy (The Task of Kill).

4.1.1.1 The robot shall shoot the opponent robots. The robot is assumed decease after have been shot for 2 times.

4.1.1.2 The field referees will decide which robot should be stopped and/or removed.

4.1.2 The task of Conquer the Flag Station

4.1.2.1 The robot shall carry the flag and put in the flag station

at the opposition’s flag station. 4.1.2.2 However, if the robot has been killed by the opponent

robot on its way to the flag base station, the fields referees will take the flag and place it back at starting zone.

4.1.3 How to achieve the VICTORY

4.1.3.1 The VICTORY is achieved when all the flag are

inserted into all designated flag station. 4.1.3.2 The referees shall decide whether the enemies have

been killed or not. 5. Retries for Robots 5.1 In the case of a violation, the referees shall instruct the team to start

again (Retry).

5.2 In the case of faulty robot movements, it is possible to start again (Retry) with the referees’ permission.

5.3 Team members are permitted to touch the robots while preparing for a Retry.

5.4 Retry shall be made from the Medic Area in the Starting Zone.

5.5 At the time of the Retry, team members shall switch the robot on to start it. After switching the robot on, the team member who performs the starting operation shall immediately leave the Field.

5.6 Only a single switch operation is permitted for each robot.

5.7 Retries can be made as many times as necessary.

5.8 Strategies premised on the use of Retries are banned.

6. Deciding the Winner 6.1 The team whose Paintball Robot has conquer the flag station at enemy

base is achieve the VICTORY and declared as the winner. This ends the match.

6.2 If neither team has achieved the VICTORY at the end of the 5 minutes match, the winner shall be decided in the following order of priority:

6.2.1 The team that have greater marks is the winner 6.2.2 The team that has inserted greater number of their flag. 6.2.3 The team that has killed the greater number of enemies is the

winner.

6.3 Points 6.3.1 Conquer all of three (3) Flag Station (VICTORY) = 105 marks 6.3.2 Successfully insert Flag into Flag Station1 = 40 marks 6.3.3 Successfully insert Flag into Flag Station2 = 30 marks 6.3.4 Successfully insert Flag into Flag Station3 = 20 marks 6.3.5 Kill the opponent robot = 5 marks

6.4 If the winner has not been settled by any of the above, the winner shall

be decided by the judges. 7. Conditions and Points to Watch out for in Designing and

Manufacturing Robots 7.1 Each team shall use only THREE (3) robots. However, reserve robots

(1 only) are allowed (during the setup time) to be replaced if the main robots cannot operate before the game started.

7.2 Each robot MUST use AT LEAST ONE Microchip PIC® MCU product, as the company is our Exclusive Technology Partner for this event. The construct of the robot should be design to enable easy inspection for the mentioned product at anytime.

7.3 The robots may not divide into sub-units.

7.4 The remote control (transmitter and receiver) between the robot and operator MUST use changeable frequency system to avoid any interference especially with the opponent robots. The frequency value to be used during the games will be decided and declared by the field referees.

7.5 All team must bring at least six different frequency value of crystal to be

used during the games.

7.6 Radio communication between operators from the same team is permitted. But it is limited between the three operators and instructor.

7.7 The robot used in the contest must be handmade by students of the university to which the team belongs.

7.8 The Paintball Robot

7.8.1 The Paintball Robot shall switch ON (by a single switch operation) once it has been started by a team member.

7.8.2 The minimum dimensions of the robot shall not less than 300 mm (long) x 300 mm (wide) x 300 mm (tall).

7.8.3 The dimensions of the robot shall not exceed 800 mm (long) x 800 mm (wide) x 800 mm (tall). The robot cannot be expanded more than this dimension.

7.8.4 The robot must be powered by single or combination of batteries either in series or parallel which is not greater than 24 Volt.

7.8.5 To avoid any damages to the robot, all teams are advised to cover up their robot body as a shield from paintball.

7.8.6 The robot must be designed to operate under unexpected environment such as wet game field or high humidity ambience.

7.8.7 The robot must use commercial paintball marker (gun) that available in the market only. The use of custom made paintball marker including all their accessories is strictly prohibited.

7.9 Detailed rules on safety

7.9.1 The use of explosives, fire and dangerous chemicals is

prohibited. 7.9.2 If a laser is used, it shall be of Class 2 or less. In designing and

preparing the laser, full care must be taken to protect all persons at the venue from harm during all procedures. In particular, the beams must be oriented in a way that it is no directed at the eyes of the spectators.

7.10 Examination of the robots 7.10.1 Participating robots shall be examined prior to the test run on the

day before the contest and again on the day of the contest before it begins. A team that fails an examination shall not be allowed to participate in the test run or contest.

7.10.2 Details of what will be examined will be provided at a later date. 7.11 Chronographs and Marker Speeds.

7.11.1 All paintball markers must be chronographed and marker speed

should be under 280 FPS. 8. Violations 8.1 If a violation occurs, a Retry shall be made by bringing the robot back

to the Stating Zone. The place and method of the Retry is laid down in “Retries for Robots”. 10 marks will be deducted from the final points. The following cases are violations: 8.1.1 Any part of robot or touch the opponent team robot. 8.1.2 Other actions that infringe on the rules without producing

disqualification. 9. Disqualification 9.1 A team shall be disqualified if it commits any of the following during the

match: 9.1.1 The team damages or tries to damage the Field and/or facilities

and equipment or opponent’s robots. 9.1.2 The team performs any act that is not in the spirit of fair play. 9.1.3 The team fails to obey instructions and/or warnings issued by

the referees. 10. On the Safety of the Robots 10.1 All robots shall be designed and manufactured as to pose no danger to

any person in the venue.

10.2 All robots shall be designed and manufactured as to cause no damage to any robot of an opposing team or the Field.

11. Teams 11.1 Each participating university in the contest can be represented by one

team only. UniMAP, as Host University, may be represented by two teams.

11.2 A team consists of three students and one instructor who all belong to the same university. The three students of the team are entitled to participate in the match itself. The organizer shall define the term of ‘student’ is undergraduate and postgraduate student.

11.3 In addition, a three-member pit crew can adjust the robots in the pit room and help to carry the robots to the Field, but cannot participate in the match itself. The members of the pit crew must be students of the same university as the team.

12. Others 12.1 The legitimacy of any action not provided for in this rule book shall be

subject to discretion of the referees.

12.2 The dimensions, weights etc. of the Field and other facilities and equipment described in this rule book have a margin of error of plus or minus 5% unless otherwise stated.

12.4 Notification of any addition and/or correction to this rule book shall be made on the official blog : miroc2013.blogspot.com

12.5 The referees may demand additional explanations on safety issues when the safety of a robot is deemed to be in question.
