When Dave Dennis won his first Test cap against the Scots, his girl friend Mo’onia Gerrard cheekily reminded him that he now needed another fifty-nine to catch her sixty appearances in the Australian netball team. As brother Mark is a Wallaby, Mo’onia has a goodly splash of rugby in her genes, too. So much so that she could bid for a spot in Australia’s Sevens team in the Brazil Olympics in 2016. It’s whispered that she already has been to a Sevens camp to check things out.

As a youngster Stirling Mortlock would join his three brothers in back garden games of Kill the Dill with the Pill in which whoever got the ball got jumped on. Then he became a ball boy with the Gordon club because a free meat pie went with the job. How time flies. Now Stirling, has announced his retirement at the age of 35 with 80 Test caps, 29 of them as captain, in his portfolio, along with 489 points, including 27 tries. Big, bustling and pacy, he will be remembered as the classic outside-centre who hurtled through at exactly the right angle. Everybody likes Stirling Mortlock, an honest, open, engaging bloke with a warm smile who could only make the GPS 3rd XV in his days at the Kings School.

The Gordon Highlanders have been thrown a lifeline by the Mingara Recreation Club Ltd, which contributes $1 million a year to support a large group of health, education, welfare and sporting groups. With their licensed club in receivership, the Gordon members have voted unanimously to accept an amalgamation proposal from the Central Coast group based at Tumbi umbi, where Mark Ella once lived.

Warringah coach Sam Harris isn’t frightened to toss an unknown young player into first grade to see if he can cut it. Now this enlightened chap has made it compulsory for players to attend the after match function from 6.30 to 7.30, otherwise they lose their match payment. “It’s an important part of what club rugby is about,” he says. Last Saturday another club

was accused on Twitter of snubbing the after match function of a crosstown club. Not correct, says the accused club. The visiting players had a drink with their rivals in the dressing room before heading home.

Every rugby club has someone who’d make a good parole officer. He never lets anyone finish a sentence.

Did you know a rugby international, subsequently given Test status, was held at university Oval in Sydney in 1922. Never used before or since as a Test match venue, it hosted a game between the Waratahs and New zealand Maoris, with 5,000 fans packed into this charming ground that hosts this weekend’s Sydney university v Eastwood game. The Maoris won 23-22.

Remember Simon Kerr, a genial prop for the Waratahs, Manly and Gordon? He now is General Manager of Papua-New Guinea Rugby.

John McKee is back in Sydney after completing a two year term as coach of Tonga’s national team, and Brian Melrose also has come home after a stint with London Irish. And the name of Michael Cheika, who has parted company with Stade Francais in Paris, keeps bobbing up as a potential coach of the Waratahs.

The broken field running of West Harbour fullback Oleni Ngungutau in the Sydney v County game was an eye catcher. After a stint in the NRL he was spotted by Wests coach Daniel Manu playing reserve grade for Parramatta last year. The Two Blues didn’t have a hope of keeping Oleni as his dad is Daniel’s cousin.

We hear that Brackin Karauria-Henry, the dasher in the Southern Districts backline, could soon be playing with a club in Japan.

Well done, Parramatta. As a follow up to their vastly improved play this year, Parramatta WILL have three Colts teams in 2013 instead of the current one. The Parramatta under 17s that won the State title on the Queens Birthday Weekend plans to stick together with their coach and play for the Two Blues.

COREy BROWN“i wouldn’t play anywhere else. i love it up here,” says 23 year-old Northern suburbs winger corey Brown.

His off-field enthusiasm for his club is matched by scintillating on-field form. after nine rounds, he tops the shute shield try scoring list with 10 – three more than any other player. This includes a crucial double in round eight to steal the game away from gordon.

He even talks up the club when contemplating his considerable personal try tally. “They’re definitely team tries and i’m just racking them up on the scoring lists. There’s so much support from all the boys,” he stresses.

recruited by Norths as a Kinross wolaroi student in orange, Brown made his first grade debut at just 18. although he had played australian schoolboys and under-20s, he says the step up in physicality was a shock.

Now a strong 96kg, Brown is physically ready to play at the next level. “my aim this year is to be recognised by a super rugby franchise,” he says. “i love rugby and playing for Norths and i just hope that people can see how hard i work on and off the field and that i’m really ready to step up to super rugby.”

with five years experience under his belt, he is now a senior member of the Norths squad – a role he is clearly relishing. “i try to remind myself that i’m still young, but i’m definitely one of the older boys and i’m loving the extra responsibilities that scott (Fava) puts on me as a leader.”

an ambitious youngster, Brown is confident while remaining grounded. He says club role models Nick Lah and scott Podmore “who have played hundreds of games,” have been a great influence both on and off the field while his mum michelle is a constant source of inspiration. “she’s done everything for me since i was a kid and she always put me first. she’s worked hard her whole life and that’s definitely something i try to instil on myself too.”

driven and level headed with an innate try-scoring instinct, corey Brown is certainly a player to watch.

With more than 65% of Test and Super Rugby players in Australia coming from Sydney Premier Rugby competition clubs, this really is the Premier Rugby competition.

And what better way to enjoy Premier Rugby than at the grounds, supporting your local team.

Not sure whether you’re reading this on Friday night, Sunday afternoon, or some time in between. If you do have Rugby News in your hot little hand and are flicking the pages, then you obviously knew about the changed starting times for this round because of the Castrol Edge Test against Wales this afternoon at Allianz Stadium – the last in the series.Let us hope that whatever time your club fixture starts you will be, or were, at Moore Park cheering on the boys in what promised to be another cracking 80 minutes. But next week we’re back to Shute Shield matches at normal times and into the third last round of Super Rugby, with the Waratahs having a bye.The shame is that our prolific garden of telopea speciosissima has withered badly these past few months, lost all its rich colouring and is very much looking forward to some fertilizer and nourishment before the 2013 season. My gardening book even suggests that the Waratah “responds well to pruning.” We’ll have to see about that…Meantime, two giants of world rugby collide this weekend. But encounters like this–between those ranked 2nd and 5th in the world – also make me wonder where else on Earth, other than established rugby regions, is the game being played nowadays.I cannot pronounce the names, or guess the whereabouts, of some of the countries you see listed in the sevens and XV-a-side tournaments being held around the globe. Even some ranked among the top 100 nations are rather unbelievable. For example, the Bahamas, Nigeria, Monaco, Norway, Vanuatu, Luxembourg and Finland have squeezed onto that list (though towards the end). But if your club’s thinking of an overseas tour, keep some of these rugby hot-spots in mind. Nothing like being a little adventurous.Though unlikely to crack the top 100 for a while, there’s another spanking new rugby nation on the ascendancy and, when you hear it, you’ll be utterly gob smacked, like me.It’s Afghanistan!

From a starting point of three players not all that long ago, the game there is making mighty strides.Based in Kabul, Afghan Rugby is hoping to inspire a rare positive narrative in a country that has endured its fair share of hardship, instability and tragedy over the years. The national team played its first official match in April, when a squad of ten travelled to Dubai to tackle a united Arab Emirates team in a three-match series.Captaining them was Aziz Ahmad, who first played rugby while living in Islamabad, Pakistan, back in 2005.The 25-year-old scrum half’s not too concerned about results right now, saying that “for us it’s all about enjoyment. We play for each other and love to play rugby.“We have improved a lot in recent months but know we still have much to learn. But we will play our best, work hard and see what happens.”The national team’s origin dates back to March 2010 when the fledgling Afghanistan Rugby Federation contacted the IRB’s staff in Asia, who assisted them in their membership pathway to join the Asian RFu last November.“On day one we had three players; on day two we had seven and then on the third day, 15 players showed up. It really grew as it went and the game is now developing a life of its own, especially in Kabul,” said Steve Brooking, the AFR’s technical advisor.“By the end of 2011, we were able to stage a national sevens tournament. Eight teams and 120 players were there and from that base now we have a national squad.“until now, we’d only been playing at the NATO base in Kabul against military teams. So this sevens tournament was the first opportunity to play another country.”Fired by this overseas conquest, Afghanistan then headed off to Britain this month for the Bournemouth Sevens, as well as playing other fixtures against English opposition. The uAE team is another amazing development story. Traditionally, rugby there has been an ex-patriot sport, but that’s changing with more and more locals taking up the game, especially as Emirati schools include it on the sporting curriculum.

Brothers Matt and John Briggs will coach opposing teams Penrith and Gordon in the Sunday game at Nepean Rugby Park this weekend, with the loser buying the winner a schooner of beer. “We shook hands at our sister Cathy’s 50th birthday last Sunday and wished each other luck,” says Matt. “It’s the third time we’ve coached opposing teams. Gordon won both games last year, so I’m $8.80 out of pocket.”

John’s youthful Gordon side are in ninth spot one point to the good of Penrith, who only two weeks ago knocked Southern Districts off the top of the table with a 24-20 upset at Forshaw Rugby Park.

With the Australia-Wales clash at Allianz Stadium on Saturday afternoon resulting in round 10 spread over three days, competition leaders Eastwood are facing in-form Sydney university in the leafy environment of university Oval on Sunday. Saturday’s ABC TV match between Souths and Eastern Suburbs is shaping as another cracker.

SYDNEY UNIVERSITY V EASTWOODWallaby back Lachie Turner and fellow Waratahs Chris Alcock and Daniel Halangahu have been rushed into Sunday’s big Shute Shield clash, with Alcock playing flanker for Eastwood and Halangahau turning out at fullback for Sydney university in the game at university Oval in which Turner will come off the bench for the Woodies.

university showed a vastly higher level of fitness and hustle to wear down Eastern Suburbs 38-15 after the Beasties had cut the leeway to 19-15 midway through the second half, while Eastwood warmed up by eclipsing bottom of the table Randwick 32-14. A week earlier the Woodies produced some awesome wet weather rugby to sink Manly 26-0, with Alcock powering in for two tries.

As the Super Rugby players are shuffled about to make sure they get the two games required for the play-offs. Tom Carter, Jono Jenkins and Paddy Ryan are others who will turn out for university. Pointing to Carter’s passion in midfield, university coach Todd Louden says: “In Japan they have a word than means mood maker. Tom is our mood maker.”

“This game is like a grand final to us,” Louden adds. “Win, lose or draw, we’re going to take a lot out of it. We’ll build from it. Eastwood have got the form

and the results for all to see.” Eastwood coach John Manenti predicts: “It will be a great game of footy. university are a fit, attritional bunch who don’t give any ground away. They’re strong across the pitch from 1 to 15.”

Tip: Sydney University

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS V EASTERN SUBURBSIf Easts play like they did in annihilating Eastwood 48-16, they’ll win. However, if the Beasties suffer from the lethargy they showed in the last twenty minutes in fizzling to a 38-15 loss to Sydney university, they’ll go down. Simple as that.

“We’re after parity up front,” says Souths coach Cam

With the Super Rugby break and Waratahs having a bye, Daniel Halangahu will play for Sydney Uni on Sunday.

Blades. “We’ll try to build the phases and unleash our backline.” With the exception of injured Waratah prop John ulugia, the Rebels will field virtually the team that sunk Warringah 30-20. Fly-half Rohan Saifoloi, who tops the Sydney point-scorers with 127, is an X-factor.

Easts coach Mark Bakewell wasn’t happy with the effort of a number of his players in the last twenty minutes, but has made few changes. Pat Dellit is wanted by the Force in Perth, so Anton Levin moves from the wing to take his place in the centre. Israel Stephens is a new face in the back-row.

Tip: Souths

NORTHERN SUBURBS V WARRINGAHNorths’ second-rower Ben Matwijow made a rush trip to Melbourne on Wednesday to figure in an internal trial with the Rebels which could lead of a Super Rugby contract. He’ll back up in this Friday night game against Warringah at North Sydney Oval. Another province also has shown interest in this great grand-nephew of rugby league immortal Dally Messenger.

However, don’t raise the subject of such midweek matches interstate with Rats coach Sam Harris, who

was planning to use halfback Josh Holmes until word came through from Perth that he was needed for a Friday night match between the Force and a South Australian President’s XV. When such a game was played in Adelaide earlier this year, the score was 109-0. Tim Donlan is the new Warringah halfback. Dave Mason, Vincent Wright, Dylan Smouha also get a chance.

Six points out of sixth spot following a 30-20 loss to Southern Districts, Norths coach Scott Fava has given a chance at fly-half to David Hardisty from the Melbourne Rising Rebels and the new fullback is Sam Myers, a country boy from Grenfell.

Tip: Norths

MANLY V WEST HARBOUR

Winter woollies are advisable if you’re headed to Manly Oval to watch the Marlins as there is an 8.20pm kick-off on Friday. With no less than five of his players having to take part in the Rebels’ internal trial on Wednesday, Manly coach Tim Lane has had to delay naming his team. However, prop Jono Owen will be back.

Wests get a boost from the return of fullback Oleni Ngungutau, whose broken-field running for Sydney against Country drew comparisons with the great David Campese, and hooker Paul Ngauamo, who played for two years in Canterbury’s under 20 representative side

Southern Districts prop Joe Lynch who played for NSW Country against Sydney. Prop Jono Owen returns for Manly.

before coming here from New zealand.

Wests are an adventurous bunch who are coming off a 15-8 disposal of Gordon, but Manly, who are playing at home, returned to the winning list with a 26-19 eclipse of Parramatta at the old Granville Park.

RANDWICK V PARRAMATTADrew Mitchell, needing a lively game to prove to Robbie Deans that he is back on track fitness-wise, played a full game with Subbies team Balmain last weekend.

On Saturday he will take the next step by starting Randwick’s game against Parramatta at Coogee on the wing.

Deans says it is up to the Wallaby star to prove his fitness and that

his form is good enough to push for a recall to the Test arena. Perhaps the presence of Mitchell could lift Randwick to their first win of the season against sixth placed Parramatta.

Tip: Parramatta

PENRITH V GORDONThe long trek to Nepean Rugby Park is a difficult one at the best of times, but when you have a young team stricken with injury it becomes even tougher.

Gordon could be without both second-rowers and their centre pairing for this Sunday game against a rumbustious Penrith outfit. “It’ll be very tough, but they’ll give it a shot,” admits Gordon coach John Briggs.

coLTs REPORTby Hamish McCathie

In what was a wet and miserable day last Saturday it was a credit to all clubs that all colts games went ahead as scheduled. I think all staff and grounds keepers should be congratulated for a tremendous effort for the players.Randwick continued in their good form with a win over the Woodies and are going to be real threat in the 2012 first grade colts competition.

raNdwicK 22 V easTwood 5Eastwood monopolised early possession and territory but Randwick's defence did not yield and in the Wicks' first visit to Woods' quarter they scored a try. Randwick doubled their score with outstanding ball control in another concerted attacking raid to go to the break 14–0.The game continued to be very closely contested but Eastwood were not able to break through and Randwick scored their third try when Eastwood were a man down in the scrum.

The Woods scored late to gain some respectability on the scoreboard but Randwick had earned their convincing win. The best for the Woods were hooker Luke Ferris, No.8 Joel Davis and centre Micky Tamone.

NorTHerN suBurBs 58 V PeNriTH 0The Norths boys came out quite strongly with Jack Walters playing like a pig in mud and scoring a treble. The Penrith side defended very well in the second half as they held Norths to two tries but it was Norths structure that got them over the line more often than not.Christian Jones was the best back for Norths as he was always looking to get involved.Penrith Coach Ben Tuipulotu was pleased with his prop Akuila Vunipola, fullback Lachie Fox who defended well and Jessie Leota who played hard at centre.

sydNey uNiVersiTy 32 V easTerN suBurBs 0St John’s Oval was in pretty good condition considering the lashing of wet weather Sydney had received leading up to this game. Sydney university kicked off and Easts were immediately on the back foot. uni played twenty minutes of terrific wet weather Rugby and went to a commanding 13-0 lead. The uni forwards were making yards and were complimented by their backs that played with great shape. The Beasties lifted in the last twenty minutes before the break and put on plenty of phases only to be denied by some gallant uni defence. The score at the break was uni 13 to Easts 0.The second half was reasonably close albeit with uni always in control. Easts were penalised at scrum time consistently and this lead to their prop being sent to the sin bin. uni scored another try to lead 18-0. The score blew out to 32-0 as uni scored two tries in the dying minutes of the game. It is hard to separate the best for uni as they all played super rugby as a team in wet conditions.oTHer gamesIn other games Manly ran out convincing winners beating Parramatta 34-0. The Marlins scored 6 tries of which their number 8 Nicholas Bligh scored three. West Harbour scored a two try to one win over Gordon in their 12-11 point victory.THis saTurdayNorths play Warringah on Friday night at North Sydney Oval and Gordon play Penrith on Sunday. The rest of the games, Easts versus Souths, Parramatta versus Randwick, West Harbour versus Manly and Eastwood versus Sydney university will be played early on Saturday due to the Saturday afternoon test match.TiPs: NorTHs gordoN easTs raNdwicK maNLy uNiCoaches please forward your match reports to [email protected]

Early in the year the Sydney Rugby union (SRu) announced changes to the 2012 Sydney club competition format for the Shute Shield competition, lower grades and the colts competitions.Changes were due in part to the Super Rugby competition expanding until August and the growth of the international Test calendar.

Refinements to the competitions were the result of the SRu working in conjunction with the ARu in adopting a different model. A committee of club representatives was formed in late 2011 to evaluate the format for the 2012 season and make recommendations to the SRu Board. The majority of recommendations were accepted.

The 2012 Shute Shield competition will be run over 16 Rounds then the new eight team Finals Series, including the Grand Final to be played on Saturday, September 15, will be conducted over four weeks.

Rounds 1 to 11 are being conducted on a home and away basis with all clubs playing each other once.

At the end of Round 11 a draw will be done for Rounds 12 to 16.

Based on Club Championship points, the top six teams will play each other and the lower six teams will play each other over Rounds 12 to 16.

The purpose of using the Club Championship points for the Rounds 12 to 16 draw is to keep all grades and colts together when one club plays another.

Club Championship points will ONLY be used to determine the draw. Points for each grade and colts team will accumulate over Rounds 12 to 16 to the points ladder of each team at Round 11.

After Round 16, the top eight on the ladder for each grade and colts team will contest the finals series.

Colts 3 is an exception to the above due to nine clubs competing.

Last week was 12 months since the sad passing of the great Australian Rugby union and Sydney university Legend, David Brockhoff OAM. Brock gave so much to the game he loved after starting his career at Eastern Suburbs he played 12 Tests for the Wallabies as well as 79 games for Sydney university with 71 of those games being 1st Grade. He coached the Students 1st Grade from 1967-1974 that included three Premierships. He also received the Sydney university Blue for Rugby in 1948, 1949, 1950 and 1951, was President of the Club in 1995 and in 1997 was picked as a reserve for SuFC's Best XV Team. Everyone in Rugby send their support to the whole Brockhoff family…he certainly was a top bloke.

The Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival is creating huge interest throughout with the 100th side recently signing on for the hugely popular tournament. The men from MARS notably the Middle Aged Rugby Side from the Philadelphia Whitemarsh Rugby Club in the uSA became the 100th team to confirm their attendance at the Fukuoka tournament which will be played from October 28-November 4.

The team has been a regular attendee at the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival since the Auckland event in 1987. "We are pleased to have reached the milestone of 100 teams with five months still remaining until the Festival," says Air New zealand Events Manager, Keith Robinson. Organisers are planning for 150 teams and 2500 players to attend the 19th Festival which first began in Auckland back in 1979. Players both male and female have to be 35 years or older to play. The Fukuoka tournament will be the first time the Festival has been held in Asia and is being viewed as a forerunner to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. Sydney university and NSW Waratahs Tom Carter along with Nathan Trist took part in the Annual Channel 9 Gold Week Telethon recently

which helped raise $2.2 million for the Sydney Children's Hospital… well done to both of you.

Manly’s Eddie Aholelei will be playing his 200th Grade game for the club this weekend while James Hilterbrand reached his century of games for the Marlins last Saturday.

There has been plenty of banter in the Randwick Colt’s recently. Jack Musgrave new nickname is “Mummy” after taking a head knock and calling out "Mummy where am I" when he came to. Alex Mides is called “Treadmill” as it looks like he is running on the spot style when on the football field.

Then there is “Tugboat” whose real name is James Munro and who had the old trick of his mates changing everything in his bedroom around when he was away for a few days. The very likable “Tugboat” keeps a pet rock in his room for good luck so when his mates changed his room around he couldn’t find his pet rock until he went to bed and it took one of his many chins to find it under in his pillow case.

Norths and Easts Colts will play for the Sam Carson Fresh Tracks Cup on the June 30th at Bon Andrews Oval which will be followed by a function at the Cabana Bar to raise funds for young people with Acquired Brain Injury.

There will be plenty of Pirates on the sea when West Harbour have their Pirate Boat Party on the 30th June while they are also having a “Lunch with

a Punch” Luncheon on Friday 20th July at Club Burwood. There will seven bouts with many top Australian amateur boxers taking part that includes a gourmet meal and plenty of refreshments. I hope some of the guests don’t jump into the ring. For further information contact West’s rugby office on 9745 2461.

Hong Kong blitzed Kazakhstan 55-0 in front of a 3,500 strong crowd at Mong Kok Stadium recently. It was the first Rugby union Test at Mong Kok since 1999. Hong Kong's convincing win sees them secure 3rd place overall on the HSBC 5N Top 5 table behind Japan and Korea.
