Last Saturday’s New Member Picnic was favored with terrifi c weather for the 100+ participants. Gary Gasperino and a dedicated group of volunteers provided a wonderful feast, Bert and Marge Misevic displayed SBR scrapbooks from years past, Mike Hodson did a brisk business with the store and Barry Weinstein and Mike Turek conducted the raffl e for an endless supply of prizes. See Nick’s article in this issue for more details and photos.

News from our favorite manufacturer includes the introduction of two new models at each end of the normally aspirated range – the Cayman (non-S) and the GT3 RS. Look for upcoming articles in the usual places. Also of note is that the 2007 Boxster S will be getting the 295 horsepower, 3.4-liter engine from the Cayman. It is indeed a great time to be a Porsche enthusiast!

We are getting people volunteering for autocross events and should have something event-wise to report in the near future. The club now owns timing equipment, so bodies and a location are all we need to put on an event.

Dave Stone will be passing around the sign-up list for the Ventura Auto Fest – this has evolved into a truly world-class event thanks to the hard work of Bob and Karen Campbell. It is not to be missed. Greg Young will be heading up the 30th SBR Zone 8 Concours at the event and will also be seeking helpers.

This was a diffi cult issue to engineer. As you may have noticed, we added eight pages (four in color) to this publication as we begin to consolidate two months into a single issue in our move to a bi-monthly newsletter. Adding eight pages to a Der Auspuff isn’t easy as everything gets moved around - but I think you will be pleased with the manner in which the dust has settled.

Note two changes this month: First, we didn’t feature an automobile in the center spread. Instead, we chose to feature something much more important - our New Members Picnic (found on pages 18-19). Second, we are pleased to announce our new Bulletin Board (found on page 7). A quick glance will show you most of our upcoming events and announcements in a simple and familiar format.

The Der Auspuff editorial staff (I’m looking at him in a mirror) is looking for help. Do we have any aspiring automotive journalists? Impassioned technical writers? Future editorial staff members? A few volunteer hours every other month would be priceless to this publication.

Since many have requested the recipe for the coleslaw at the picnic, we have printed it to the right. Enjoy!

is well stocked for the New Members Picnic. Mike has started a list for the PCA/SBR Grille badges.

Autocross: Richard Shaw has expressed an interest in chairing an autocross committee. He is in hopes to schedule an event this fall.

Concours: Joe reported that Greg Young has volunteered to chair the SBR concours this fall. Others are needed to assist Greg in this endeavor.

Activities: Barry reported on the success of the Progressive Dinner and upcoming events on the schedule. It was discussed and decided to have two “alternate car” breakfasts per year. These would perhaps be in April and August. Barry is now able to Email our members with updates and memos regarding events to keep all informed. Howard Taxen is willing to donate a popcorn and snow cone machine for the new members picnic but will need someone to transport and operate them. Pamuela and Mike Hodson volunteered to transport and Pamuela will operate the machines.

Meetings and Events: Gary Gasperino was out of town. A meeting is scheduled next week at his house to fi nalize plans for the new members picnic.

Archives: Archives are well and good.

President: Joe brought the news of Richard Shaw’s interest in the Autocross and Greg Young’s willingness to chair the Concours. Joe suggested partnering up with the 356 registry and possibly the CCR for the 2007 Concours.

Old Business: Barry reported that the club two-way radios have been secured. Barry will be in charge of inventory of radios. Barry also reported an interest by new members to have a Drivers Education event. Mike Harley will check into getting instructors so we may

possibly schedule a DE for our region and or zone.

New Business: Martin suggested utilizing the Way Point Café for other events throughout the month in addition to our regular breakfast meeting. Martin also suggested having a “Park and Display” area at an upcoming concours which would allow entrants to arrive at whatever time they chose and leave at any time. A nominal fee could be charged and parking would be at the opposite end of concours so as not to interrupt the event. Martin felt that this latitude would inspire more members to attend and get involved.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 pm.

The Board of Directors held its June 8, 2006 meeting at Money Poncho Restaurant.

Present were Joe Carastro, Mike and Pamuela Hodson, Mike Harley, George and Mary Barrett, Barry Weinstein, Martin and Ankie Janson, Mike and Karen Turek.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm

Secretary: Karen read the minutes of the May meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer: George handed out the Treasurer’s report. Joe handed George a check for $550 to be deposited from new member picnic proceeds. George is still working on getting a Kinkos card for Barry. George reported that the clubs fi nances should be held in check when the bi-monthly newsletter is instituted.

Membership Report: We began the month with 630 members. We gained 18 new members, but had 29 members that did not renew on time. One member transferred from the LA region. That leaves us with 624 current members.

Editor: Mike Harley thanked those who submitted articles and pictures early. 100 copies of the May issue of Der Auspuff were sold for reprints to Canepa Design.

Advertiser: In Lynn Kuchera’s absence, Joe read a letter drafted to inform our advertisers of the upcoming bi-monthly change to our newsletter and reasons for the changes.

Rally Report: Joe Boucher’s rally training and rally went well this year. Joe and Kathy Schneider will be setting off on a four day adventure to lay out the course for the upcoming Portland Parade Tour.

Goodie Store Report: Mike gave $542 from recent sales to George. The Goodie Store

Concours: Joe reported that he and Greg Young are working on sponsorship for this year’s concours at the Ventura show. Gary Gasparino continues to work on next year’s Concours. The location to be at the Santa Barbara City College.

Activities: Barry requested approval for $100 to be spent on prizes for the upcoming Chili Cook off . Barry also reported that all events planned for this year are going well and he will be putting a rough draft together for next year’s events. Valerie suggested that announcements at the breakfast meetings get started earlier so as to address the majority of attendees.

Meetings/Events: Gary Gasparino announced that there would be no general membership meeting this year.

Archivist: The Heinmiller Award was located by the Archivist, Burt.

President’s Report: Joe reported that an Email was sent out to all members regarding the introduction of the new 911 Turbo hosted by the Santa Barbara Group on Wednesday, July 15. Mike Hodson is to head a nominating committee for Board positions to be fi lled for the next year.

Old Business: none

New Business: Agenda items for up and coming board meetings should be sent to Joe the Friday before so these items can be included in the agenda and emailed to all board members prior to the meeting. If a member is unable to attend, he or she may have input on such matters utilizing this format. Gary suggested that a new member

pamphlet be put together identifying various information about the SBR. Mike Harley suggested a paragraph be included and continuously updated in the Der Auspuff giving such information instead of printing a pamphlet.

The next board meeting to be held at the El Torito Restaurant in Ventura on August 1, 2006 at 6:30 for dinner and meeting. RSVP to Mike and Karen Turek.

Minutes from July 5, 2006

The Board of Directors held its July board meeting at Mike Harley’s home. Present were Joe Carastro, Gary Gasparino, Mike Harley, Barry and Valerie Weinstein, George and Mary Barrett, Rich Shaw, Mike and Karen Turek.

The meeting was called to order at 7:35pm.

Secretary: Karen read the minutes from the June meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Treasurer: George handed out a copy to board members of the latest treasurer’s report. Gary Gasparino gave George an envelope with various proceeds from the new member’s picnic for deposit. George informed President Joe Carastro that he would not be running for treasurer for next year.

Membership Report: Joe Carastro read the membership report submitted to him from Membership Chair, Jeanette Bassett. The membership is staying steady at about 625 members.

Editor: Mike Harley handed out a revised Editorial Calendar. All deadlines will be on the 10th of the month preceding the two month segment, ie: Oct. 10 for the Nov. / Dec issue.

Advertiser: All advertisers are paid for the year. Lynn Kuchera is searching for his replacement for next year.

Rally Report: no report given.

Goodie Store: Most items have been sold that were purchased at the Warehouse Tour and Sale. Customized items are selling good.

Autocross: Rich Shaw moved for approval to put $500.00 down to secure the Camarillo Airport site for our next autocross. Joe seconded the motion and the board voted in favor. Oxnard Airport is also a possible

I’d like to make special note of a number

of people who attended this breakfast and a

very special note of two who didn’t.

The two I’m talking about are a couple of

the club’s most active members, Mike and

Karen Turek. Mike and Karen, as you know,

held Val’s and my position for three years, as

Activities Co-Chairs. Karen continued on the

Board and is now the SBR/PCA Secretary. (By

the way, although he holds no offi cial title,

Mike still works with the activities committee,

attends all Board meetings, and volunteers

wherever he can to help.) The reason they

were not at the Camarillo breakfast is that

they were at a memorial service honoring

Mike’s Mom who passed away a few weeks

ago. Our most heartfelt condolences go out

to Mike, Karen their kids and the rest of their

family. Our prayers are with you.

Regarding attendees to this breakfast,

Rob Alen joined us for the fi rst one he has

come to since joining our club a few months

ago. Mike Tracy from Ventura drove up in his

2006 997. John Ossekop, a resident of Santa

Clarita, joined us in his ‘84 911. Eric and

Deonoa Bernocco from Thousand Oaks came

to the breakfast in their candy apple red1989

slant nosed 911 Turbo. Sue and Roy Bernard,

new members from West Hills, drove up

to the breakfast in their 2006 Boxster. Bill

McGovern, a resident of Thousand Oaks,

arrived in his 2006 997.

Guests at the meeting included Glen

Grossman from Thousand Oaks. Glen is

looking for a C4 S. Dusty Draper, a16 year old

from Thousand Oaks joined us. Dusty came

as a guest of Mike Furnish. He is currently

restoring the family 924.

We’d like to extend a hearty “welcome” to

all of our new members and guests.

June 3, 2006 - Offi cially, we counted

136 people and 94 Porsches in attendance

at our June Camarillo Breakfast meeting.

Unoffi cially, it is my opinion that more

people attended than actually signed up.

attendance guru Dave Stone was worked to

near exhaustion keeping up with the fl ow).

encyclopedic and trivial) seemed to have been the only one at the meeting aware of this new law. Thank you for keeping us up to date, James.

Dave Stone reminded all of us to sign up to volunteer for the Ventura German Autofest in which our club has taken an active role since its inception. This year, we will, again, be holding the Concours there. It will be chaired by PCA/SBR member, Craig Young. He can certainly use help arranging and judging the cars. Contact him for more information. Those wishing to volunteer to assist at the Autofest, in various other capacities, please see Dave Stone.

Mike Harley, our Der Auspuff Editor, invited all of us there to contribute articles, pictures, etc to our award wining newsletter. He said

that beginning in July it will be published bi-monthly. The format will be expanded from 32 pages to 40 pages, including four additional full color pages.

To take up the slack for the lack of monthly updated event information in the newsletter we will be sending emails to all club members telling them about the current activities, events and tours. If we do not have your current email address, please let our Membership Chair, Jeanette Bassett, know. You can fi nd her email address in Der Auspuff . She will correct it for you. Also, you can check the PCA/SBR website for an up-to-date calendar. Anyone needing information is also welcome to call or contact Val or myself. Our numbers are in Der Auspuff as well.

June 10, 2006 - Although it was a little overcast we still had 41 people in 23 Porsches get together for the June Breakfast Meeting at the Harbor Restaurant at Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara.

Michael and Beverly Brovsky, from Santa Barbara came in their 2006 Cayman S. Charles Hefner and Carol Dienstbien, long time friends of Gary and Debra Laird, came as a guest of the Laird’s. They signed up after breakfast and became our newest club members. The Bernard’s, Ray and Sue, new members from West Hills, drove to Santa Barbara in their 2006 Boxster. Since joining the club two weeks ago the Bernards have registered for practically every event listed over the next few months. Sue told us they plan to become very active members.

Welcome to all of our new members. Get as active as you can with PCA/SBR and enjoy all the benefi ts membership in our club off ers.

Joe Carastro, leaving in a few hours for Germany to pick up his new Porsche at the factory, opened the meeting by reminding us all to come to the New Member’s Picnic in the next two weeks.

July 1, 2006 - It’s the beginning of the 4th of July weekend and many were already celebrating on their way out of town, shopping for food, fi reworks or whatever, as only about 3/4ths of the usual number of Camarillo Breakfast club attendees made it to the Way Point Cafe. It was a beautiful day, albeit a little warm. Per Dave Stone’s count, 116 people in 60 cars enjoyed breakfast at our July 1st meeting

The only newcomers to the breakfast were guests of Gary Adelman - Tony and Charo Richards, who arrived in their Porsche Cayenne. Dave Stone welcomed them to the breakfast. The Richards are Los Angeles Region members of the PCA, and we enjoyed their presence.

Held the fi rst Saturday of each month, the Camarillo Breakfast event welcomes all members and their Porsches to the Waypoint Café at the Camarillo Airport.

August and April are “Alternate Car” months at the breakfast events – bring your “other” favorite vehicle!

Joe then mentioned that Mike “Goodie Store” Hodson has taken on the job of leading the nominating committee for Board Positions for 2007. Anyone interested in joining the Board please see Mike. And while you are

talking to Mike, about the available positions, get something from him from our goodie store. Mike encouraged us to pick up the Porsche lanyards he got at the PCNA tour at “below wholesale” prices. He also was promoting Sally Carrera cars from the movie “Cars” at $2.00 each. For anyone interested, Mike said he still has few 911 Turbo models left that he got at the PCNA tour.

Next David Stone introduced the 1st time attendees to the Santa Barbara Breakfast. They were: Garrick Newman from Westlake Village in a C4S, Peter and Tania Hopps in their ‘97 Turbo S. The Hopps are from Port Hueneme, have been members for a year, but this is

the fi rst time they joined us for breakfast in Santa Barbara. Larry Young, in his ’83 911 SC also broke bread with us. Dave closed by welcoming all 40 members (in 26 cars) that showed up for this breakfast. Then, switching hats, he and Bob Campbell, continued to sign up volunteers for the Ventura Auto Show. Bob

congratulated the club on holding its 30th Annual Concours d’Elegance at the show.

We then got up and listed the events and activities coming up in the next three or four months. Val and I urge each of you to check the PCA/SBR website for event information, Or, call Val and myself if you need any current updates. Also, be sure to let our membership Chairperson, Jeanette Bassett. know what your current email address is. Val and I are now sending out emails to supplement the information you get in Der Auspuff , on the website and from the Activities packets handed out at each meeting.

material necessary for a proper explanation

of the functions of the marsh and the recent

political struggles to save it from real estate

developers.

The park has been in existence for less

than one decade, and the hard work and

dedication of those who fought to protect

and create it has paid off . Vegetation has

returned to the area, and it has brought

back many varieties of fl ora, wildlife

– and parasites. All are benefi cial to the life

sustaining functions of the marsh. Andrea

was patient in her explanations of how the

fl ora has germinated and spread, what types

of land-based and aquatic creatures have

returned, and how parasites assist in the

cycle of life.

During the hike along the well-maintained

paths, Andrea pointed out several ways by

which plants survive life on a sand dune

and how they adopt themselves to their

environment. How do they catch water? How

do they pollinate? How are seeds transported

to remote locations? The presentation was

most informative and even entertaining.

The tour ended at 3 p.m. and everyone

headed home. These outings have become

very popular as they combine social and

educational experiences. If you are interested

marsh important to our health? You would

know the answers to these questions

had you participated in SBR’s Retired and

Unemployed Folks Committee exploration of

the Carpinteria Salt Marsh on June 22, 2006.

Fourteen individuals enjoyed the beautiful

day and the company of fellow SBR members

in several manners. The group gathered at

11:15 a.m. at the Sears parking lot in Santa

Barbara. It then proceeded to The Beachside

Café located at the Goleta State Beach,

adjacent to the UCSB campus. A special

table for all was reserved on the patio that

sits on the beach overlooking the wharf and

the calm Pacifi c Ocean. To the west jutting

into the ocean is the peninsula hosting the

university’s diverse and growing campus.

To the east is the Santa Barbara Harbor.

Delicious food and plenty of conversation

added to the enjoyment of the morning.

At 1:00 p.m. the R.U.F. group departed the

restaurant and headed south on Highway

101 to Carpinteria. Exiting on Linden Avenue,

it headed towards the ocean. Each driver was

extra cautious because at one corner, where

a very popular hamburger joint attracts

heavy crowds, there must have been a dozen

sheriff deputies waiting for their burgers

while their motorcycles were lined up along

the curb. As R.U.F. drove past, each deputy’s

eyes were focused on the line-up of Porsches

passing by.

At the foot of Linden Avenue lies

Carpinteria City Beach, a heavily used

recreation area. Despite being a Thursday,

the beach was crowded with sunbathers and

swimmers. A right hand turn onto Sandyland

and the group was at the trailhead for the

Salt Marsh. Greeting the arriving Porsches

was Andrea Adams-Morden, our docent

The next two days provided magnifi cent

sightseeing, several long hikes, and one very

challenging trek up to a cliff outpost known

as Angel’s Landing. The latter is a 2.6-mile

hike that gains about 1,800 feet in elevation

via a series of switchbacks.

The morning of May 22 found the group

leaving Zion and heading to Bryce Canyon.

Bryce Canyon is certainly diff erent. At

Zion, one looks up to marvel at the natural

wonders. At Bryce, one has to look down into

an amphitheatre, a bowl, which contains

the mystical hoodoos. The shapes are a

psychedelic delight, and the dancing colors

and shadows present an ongoing show

for the imagination. Several long hikes

on the rim of the canyon, and a couple

of adventurous treks into the depths of

the valleys below, provided numerous

viewpoints and perspectives into the wild

nature of the park. A long drive to Rainbow

Point was worthwhile as this off ered a line of

sight from the highest elevation in the park.

After three nights at Bryce, the group

headed to the North Rim of the Grand

Canyon on the morning of May 25. The road

to the north rim provides a marvelous driving

opportunity and much pleasure for the

Porsche driver. Gorgeous alpine meadows,

winding brooks and streams, pine forests and

wildlife surround the well-maintained road.

In addition to a couple of moderate hikes,

our adventurers drove to Point Imperial and

Cape Royal. At each destination, fascinating

hikes proved very rewarding as the vantage

points aff orded views of the Colorado River

as it cut and meandered deeper into the

canyon. One of the trails led to an overhang

with a 360-degree view of the valley lying

6,000 feet below. Vertigo!

May 27, Saturday, and time to start the

trip home. Although tired after the ten-day

mission, each participant was ready to talk

about and plan next year’s event. Who knows

where the group will fi nd itself?

Just a few hours north on I-15, about

three hours past Las Vegas, is the region of

Utah known as its southwest color area. The

parched desert makes way for verdant valleys

and rock formations that stagger the senses.

On May 19, 2006, nine intrepid members

of the Santa Barbara Region launched

an exploration of Zion and Bryce Canyon

National Parks in Utah, and the North Rim of

the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

This was a vacation planned one year in

advance, and it was not an offi cial SBR event

-- just a bunch of friends setting out for some

hiking.

The group consisted of Larry and Suzanne

Stoops, Will and Judy Hoag, Bob and Lin

Holzinger, Carol Mathieu and Nicolas and

Olga Liakas. It departed from Westlake

Village the morning of May 19 and made its

approach into Las Vegas around noontime. It

was a very hot day, with temperatures rising

to 106 degrees, and the traffi c on the I-15

through downtown Las Vegas was bumper

to bumper for miles.

Exit 16 off I-15 in Utah is state route 9, and

that takes you straight into Zion National Park.

Zion does not permit private automobiles on

its roads (except for those entering the lodge

parking area), and all visitors must tour the

park grounds via a shuttle bus system that

is very prompt and effi cient. By the time the

SBR members arrived on the 19th, it was

time for dinner at the lodge’s dining room.

Our region hosts a biennial event to honor all new members who have joined the Porsche Club of America, Santa Barbara Region, during the preceding two years. The 2006 picnic for the honorees (as joined by numerous veteran participants) took place on June 24, 2006 at Freedom Park in Camarillo. More than 140 individuals were present, and the parking lot was jammed with glorious Porsches of all ages and models. The majority of those in attendance were classifi ed as new members. The gathering also celebrated our region’s 42nd birthday.

The offi cial celebration was scheduled to launch at noon, but by 10 a.m. a couple of dozen veterans (all members of the picnic committee) appeared on the site and commenced the decorations, table set-ups, food preparation and barbeque fi res. Leading the eff orts were Gary and Lynn Gasperino, chairs of the 2006 picnic. Among those engaged in the pre-game fun (and deserving our gratitude and sincere thanks) were Marge Misevic and Leon Steff y. They had the awesome responsibility of food purchase and preparation. Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, dips, chips, and so many other items were lovingly arranged and grilled by Marge and Leon. Department (from which he recently retired). Karen Turek pitched in with the food service, the decorations and many other labors of love. Barry and Valerie Weinstein took part in all required tasks, as did Dave and Susan Stone, Mike and Pamuela Hodson, Jeanette and Bob Bassett, Joe and Nancy Carastro, John and Linda Cotton and Olga Liakas. Burt Misevic brought with him the archives, presenting a snapshot of our region’s 42 years within PCA. Indeed, later in the afternoon Joe Carastro, our region’s president, honored the Misevics and Anita Banke for their more than 40 years membership in our club, and special recognition went to Burt for having served as National PCA President during his tenure.

Members started to appear shortly before noon, and the parking lot looked like a Porsche showroom. More than 80 cars fi lled the lot, with many being lined-up in the front row of parking adjacent to the picnic area. The latter was brimming with banners, balloons, placards and tablecloths – all in the Porsche family of colors. The Picnic Committee members took extra care to introduce new members to each other and to the veteran members. No one was left to sit by himself, and we are confi dent that several new friendships were formed on this occasion.

Beverly Giffi n-Frohm, Zone 8 Representative, was present along with her colleague Tom Gould. Bev addressed the gathering, praising our region’s growth in membership numbers and the variety of programs and events it is off ering to the membership.

By 1 p.m., the food was ready, and the lines formed quickly. Due to the large number of volunteer food servers, everything moved rapidly. There was enough food to go twice around, and many guests did in fact return more than once to the serving tables. The hard work of those responsible for the presentation showed. Everyone present expressed his thanks and took pleasure at enjoying a casual meal with so many friends. The presence of dozens of children added to the festive spirit. Many were engaged along with their parents in water balloon tossing, volleyball, and Frisbee tossing and other activities. One young lady, Kyelle Sorenson, participated fully even though she had recently broken her left arm. The cast was signed by one of our senior members on behalf of PCA. Her older sister Avery, who is entering the third grade this September, kept a watchful eye on Kyelle making sure she did not encounter any hardships.

As in the past at these events, there were plenty of door prizes – so many in fact that there was one prize for every fi ve attendees. For some reason, however, Lois Moser won more than her fair share of prizes leaving others to wonder how one person could be so lucky. Many of the gifts were off ered through the generosity and support of Porsche Santa Barbara. Representing this excellent dealership was Walt Branscome, a proud member and supporter of our club for many years. In addition to the door prizes, there was a hotly contested award for the most lovingly maintained car, and a not-so-sought-

after booby prize for the car in most need of attention. Winning the former was Dave Hill for his 1964 356C Bali Blue Sunroof Coupe. The “winner” of the latter was Fred French for his 1985 944; he was a most gracious winner with a great sense of humor. There was some confusion on the award to Fred; it seems that an organized and orchestrated eff ort by Mike and Karen Turek produced many votes for the 2001 Biarritz White Twin Turbo owned by the undersigned, but the eff ort fell short by a few votes.

There was a great deal of interest expressed by the new members in their participation in club events over the next few months. More than a dozen signed up for a variety of functions. They also visited the Goody Store and all the purchases made help to sustain the club and all its activities.

John and Linda Cotton graciously provided the coff ee for the dessert table. Guests were treated to gourmet and freshly brewed coff ee along with a choice of three cakes. Serving the latter was John and Janice Koehler. John is the Western Region General Manager for Porsche Cars of North America, and he and Janice joined our region about one year ago. It is an honor to have them within our midst.

A sincere thank you is extended to all who pitched in to make this event a great success, and a hearty welcome to all our new members.

Porsches. The fi rst was a completely restored

1962 Super 90 coupe, with sunroof. The

other was a 1957 JPS 356 replica Frank had

built to exacting specifi cations. When the car

was being built the details were taken from

pictures of another of our members’ cars.

This was Wayne and Houri Greko’s red 356.

They used the pictures to get the restoration

right. In fact it was so right that it is almost a

perfect replica.

A number of new members attended the

Progressive Dinner. Steve and Janet Kaller

joined us. Other than breakfast meetings this

was their fi rst event since purchasing their

Cayman a few months back. Eric Loos, an ex-

member of Orange Coast PCA came for the

fi rst time since joining our club a little over

a month ago. The Kishes, Craig and Saundra,

from Westlake, also attended a planned

activity (other than a breakfast meeting) for

the fi rst time.

A delightful day was had by all – new

members and old members alike. Our

gratitude goes out to the volunteers for

all their work setting up their homes to

receive our group. On behalf of all those

who attended thank you so much to Gail and

Claude Robillard, John and Jeanne McNair

and Frank and Elaine Rayas for hosting this

wonderful day. We all really enjoyed having

the opportunity to visit your three lovely

homes.

It was early afternoon on Saturday, May

20th. Forty-fi ve PCA/SBR members met at

the Moorpark train station for the fi rst leg of

the 2006 Progressive Dinner.

The journey began with a thirty-minute

drive over a very scenic and twisty Grimes

Canyon to the home of Gail and Claude

Robillard in Fillmore for hors d’oeuvres. Just

as we turned to go north over the canyon, our

group of twenty-plus Porsches was stymied

by a detour. Fortunately, Gary Moser, who

was leading the fi rst group, took it in stride

and within a few miles led us back to the

road. The group arrived without incident

(other than the unplanned detour). Everyone

brought an appetizer to share and we spent

about an hour eating prior to mounting up

on our trusty four-wheeled steeds for the

gallop back over the hills to our next stop.

Once again we took the switchbacks and

curves of Grimes Canyon (only this time in

reverse). Our destination was the home of

Jeanne and John McNair, in Thousand Oaks.

Here we enjoyed the salad portion of the

menu. Another hour of eating and socializing

with our fellow club members and we once

again saddled up, and got back on the trail.

This time the group headed for Bauducco’s

Italian Restaurant in Moorpark, where we sat

down for an entrée of home cooked Italian

food. The day was beautiful, the morning fog

had burned off , and the sun was shining on

all of us who gathered at Bauducco’s to eat

on their patio.

This time we loped into the setting sun

to the home of Frank and Elaine Rayas in

Oxnard. The Rayas’s had laid out a cornucopia

of cakes, cookies, and other desserts for the

fi nal curtain to a truly fun day. After coff ee and

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to visit the major battlefi elds of the Civil War. Their names (Vicksburg, Brices Cross Roads, Shilo, Stone River, Antietam, Gettysburg) are etched in American history and in our collective conscience. The devastating confl ict reshaped America and still aff ects our political and social beliefs. The loss of life was unimaginable, and moral, military and political authority would be forever infl uenced. Finally, I got the chance to travel to these sites. Mike Turek, who recently

retired from the L.A. County Fire Department, joined me. Our three-week, 4,100 (one-way) mile journey began on April 10, 2006 at 6 a.m. We packed our luggage into the 2001 996 Twin Turbo and had room to spare. We would follow a course that would take us not only into the heart of the Civil War, but also the birth of the American nation and its involvement in the wars of the 20th century. It would fi nish with a visit to the defi ning moment of the 21st century, New York City’s World Trade Center (Ground Zero).

We covered a lot of ground on the fi rst

three days of our adventure. We stayed on I-10 through California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, and averaged 750 miles per day. The Turbo was a joy to drive, easily handling the freeway conditions and averaging slightly over 24 miles to the gallon of gasoline. (Most impressive of all, the Turbo consumed slightly less than one quart of oil during the entire 4,100-mile trip.) Our fi rst signifi cant stop was on April 11 in San Antonio, Texas, where we visited The Alamo and toured that city’s

famous Riverwalk District. The Alamo museum contains numerous exhibits from the battles for Texas independence from Mexico, and the festive dinnertime on the river allowed us to relax and enjoy a fi ne Mexican meal (ironic, no?).

April 12 found us in Austin, Texas where we toured the state capitol building, the largest of all the state capitols and taller than the U.S. Capitol Building. The day ended in a suburb of Huston, where we enjoyed the hospitality of our friends and former neighbors, Richard and Debbie Bonfanti. The heart of our expedition

would start the next day. We drove into Louisiana on I-10 and then headed north on U.S. 165 to Alexandria, then LA 28 East and U.S. 84 East into Natchez, Mississippi, arriving in the early afternoon.

Natchez in on the Mississippi River and is known for its numerous anti-bellum mansions and plantations that convey a strong image of life in the south. We visited two such historic structures: Longwood and Dunleith. Both are extremely beautiful and interesting, but the

former is unique in that the upper three levels of the mansion were never completed due to the outbreak of the Civil War. It is now in the hands of a private trust. The latter is a marvel of Greek revival architecture and has been restored several times by its private owners and now includes a bed and breakfast inn on the grounds. Downtown Natchez still resembles the mid-19th century river trading center, and features many buildings from that era.

Just north of Natchez is the town of Port Gibson. When Ulysses S. Grant was

laying siege to Vicksburg, his troops captured Port Gibson and were ready to burn it to the ground when Grant spared the town by declaring that it was too beautiful to burn. Surviving to this date is a Presbyterian Church with a spire topped by a gold hand with its index fi nger pointing to the heavens. Heading northwest out of town you will fi nd Vicksburg, site of one of the most important and hotly contested battles during the war.

President Lincoln was convinced that the key to winning the war was the capture of Vicksburg. That would cut the Confererate

states into two parts and would eliminate use of the river by Confederate forces. Repeated attempts by Grant to invade the city failed, so he commenced a six-week siege of the city. His armies surrounded the town and bombarded it into submission. The Vicksburg National Military Park almost surrounds the current city of Vicksburg and was the most impressive of all the sites we would visit on our trip. You enter by passing under the Memorial Arch, an impressive gateway. The park is dotted with numerous monuments erected by the states, north and south, whose soldiers participated in the campaign. The most grandiose is the Illinois monument; more than 50% of the northern troops engaged in the battle hailed from that state. In addition, there are markers indicating the position of troops and following the fl ow of the confl ict. Further, a newer exhibit displays the wreckage of the U.S.S. Cairo, a northern warship that was sunk during the campaign.

By early afternoon on the 14th of April we embarked upon one of the most beautiful drives we have ever experienced. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs for over 400 miles between Natchez and Nashville, TN, and follows the footpath explored by early traders and settlers. It is one lane each way, has a speed limit of 50 M.P.H., enjoys endless curves and changes in elevation – and is devoid of other vehicular traffi c. It was strange not to encounter another

vehicle, in either direction, for one-half hour at a time! Further, springtime in the south added fabulous splashes of color to the countryside. We arrived in Tupelo, MS, the birthplace of Elvis Presley, in the early evening.

The next morning, we were the only visitors to Brices Cross Roads when we arrived. Almost all of the land on which this battle occurred is now in private hands, so the National Park Service controls only a couple of acres directly at the cross roads. The open fi elds surrounding the site are virtually in the same condition as when the battle was fought, giving the visitor a vivid view of the opposing positions and the suicidal advances each force had to endure. Slightly further north is Corinth, a major railway center at the time, and site of numerous clashes for the control of the rail system. (The Visitor Center at Corinth has a marvelous interpretive exhibit entitled “The Stream of American History” which uses fl owing water and granite markers to highlight and trace the major events in the confl ict between the states.) Corinth was part of a larger struggle, one that would come to be known simply as Shilo.

Located just to the northeast of Corinth, Shilo was one of the major tactical turning points in the war. After being pushed out of Tennessee, Southern forces regrouped here in an attempt to stop the advancing Union armies. The latter’s victory allowed the attacks

on Vicksburg to proceed. Contemporary writers and historians knew that the South would lose the war after its defeat at Shilo. The Sunken Road and the Hornet’s Nest would forever become national memorials.

Our next destination was Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. It is the home site of Davey Crockett! A town where time has stood still for a century, it has a town square surrounded by shops and small eateries and features a statue of Crockett. We had lunch at the Square 40 Restaurant where the most expensive lunch entry was $4.95. Crockett’s cabin was about 200 yards to the southeast from the square, but our waitress could not give us directions because she had never been there! After visiting the cabin, we continue on to Franklin, TN, a town fl ush with restorations of civil war era buildings and now a weekend destination for residents of Nashville and Memphis. Just to its east is Murfreesboro, and home to the Stone River National Battlefi eld Park. This too was a small park, with much of the battlefi eld land in private hands.

The Porsche Club of America (PCA) held its 50th birthday in 2005 after being founded in Virginia in 1955 to serve the needs and interests of Porsche owners everywhere. Celebrations were held around the country, regionally and nationally, for the largest independent single marque club in the world. The objectives of the PCA are:

The geographical area of the “Porsche Club of America” includes all of North America and Puerto Rico, except Mexico, making up our National membership of 139 regions and approximately 54,600 members (as of the end of May 2006). The PCA is governed by a Board of Directors made up of the elected offi cers (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer), Chairpersons of The Standing Committees (Insurance, Public Relations, Finance, Membership, Nominating, Policy, Technical, National Parade, Parade Competition Rules, and Legislative Liaison), the last Past-President, and the Region Presidents. All of these people/positions (except Region Presidents) are listed in the back few pages of the PCA National magazine Porsche Panorama “Pano” each month along with their contact information. All positions in PCA are volunteer positions with the exception of the offi ce staff in the PCA Headquarters offi ce and Panorama Editor. Region staff s are listed annually in the March issue of Porsche Panorama. Many members keep the March issue of Pano so they have the contact people for all Regions, especially if you are driving cross-country and need some help.

Talking about driving across the country – when you take that trip in your Porsche, look at the PCA web site, and the area that you are going to be in to see which regions are there and what events are happening when you plan to be in the area. All Regions are listed from the Zone Map. Regions welcome members from other areas at an event when they are in their area. We have had other region members several times at our breakfasts and it is always a thrill when someone out of our Region area stops by.

The PCA National organization is comprised of thirteen zones, 54,600 members, with Santa Barbara Region being a part of Zone 8, which

coincidently has thirteen regions covering Southern California, Arizona, and Southern Nevada. Zone 8 has a total of 6,700 members, 12% of the total National membership, and is headed by a Zone Representative, currently Bev Giffi n-Frohm, who is appointed by the Executive Council for a term of two years at a time. The Zone Rep is the Region liaison with the PCA National Offi ce to assist us with any questions that we have or problems that come up.

Zone 8, in addition to the Zone Rep, has a Zone staff of knowledgeable persons who chair sections of their expertise and interest in the Zone - AutoCross, Concours, Rally, Time Trial, Chief Driving Instructor, Rules, Zone 8 Reporter and Webmaster, and Region Coordinator. These chairs are available to answer questions from anyone in the Regions, and are listed in the der Auspuff with contact information.

As you pay your annual dues each year a portion of your dues comes back to your Region to help pay for the operation of the Region. An individual cannot be a member of a Region without being a member of National or vice versa. You cannot be a dual member of two regions without paying for two dues each year. You can however obtain a subscription to any Region’s newsletter by asking the second Region the cost and dealing directly with that Region.

Regions of PCA range in size from 2,200 in the Northern New Jersey Region to 15 members in Llano Estacado, TX Region. The Santa Barbara Region is 626 members strong, and growing!
