Ruby Bridges

Did you know that a little girl went to school so we can get a good education? That little girl's name is Ruby Bridges. When she was 6 she went to a school for white kids only. Her parents Abon Bridges, Lucille Bridges sent her there to get a good education because a black school did not teach her how to read and write. The government sent Federal Marshals to protect her because people would try to hurt her. When she was 6 she did not know the civil rights movement was going on all she knew is that she was going to school. She was testing the law because in 1957 the Brown vs. Topeka Board Of Education passed but no black person wanted to test the law so Ruby's family sent Ruby to test the law. The story of Ruby Bridges is a great history of the Civil Rights Movement.

She taught her a lot of things like math, how to write, and spelling. Ruby was happy that she was learning but she was lonely at the same time. She wish that all the kids came back. Every time she went to school she got lonelier every day. But when she started second grade all of the kids came back and she was very happy to learn and have friends there to learn with her.

Experience at Ruby's School

But I felt more safe when the Federal Marshals were walking with me. People were starting to throw rocks and that's when the butterflies started to move more viciously. I started to panic but I stayed calm at the same time. When we got closer to my school people called me a rodent and other terrible things. But before I left my home my mom told me not to listen to those white people I'm there to learn so I can be the smartest black I could be that's when I started to ignore. When I walked in the classroom everyone left expect Mrs. Henry she taught me everything. It was like all the butterflies flew away to be happy. When I got in second grade all of the kids came back I had a lot of friends and guess what more black kids came to my school.
