Brent’s Blogs and Reading Task
You may have checked into Brent’s Blog last week to see the reading entitled, “Towards a Growth
Mindset” by Professor Geoff Masters which I posted on Tuesday. As a follow on later in the week, I posted
a summary of sorts on the article, to hopefully encourage more people to read it. I would love for you to
read the article and post your comments via the comments section of the blog. I have also shared the
article with staff and the School Council to continue the conversation around the work we are doing in
transitioning towards being a more student centred school. Hopefully, I will read your comments soon or
would certainly be happy to chat with you if you drop in to see me or catch me on yard duty on a Friday
night.
Mother’s Day This Sunday
This coming Sunday is Mother’s Day and we wish our mothers a very happy and rewarding day. To assist
with this, our Parents and Friends Group will be hosting a Mother’s Day stall this Thursday with a selection
of gifts for students to purchase, ranging in price from $1—$5. Thank you Parents and Friends Group!
School Nurse Visit
School Nurse visits for Prep students are continuing this week on Monday and Wednesday. If follow up is
required, a letter is sent home with the child.
Environment subcommittee meeting Wednesday May 4th from 6:00pm
Our environment subcommittee has moved times from Tuesday to Wednesday and will start at 6:00pm. I
look forward to seeing all of our committee members here at school then.
District Cross-Country
Congratulations to our students who competed at the District Cross Country last week. Reports back from
staff were great with the students really reflecting our values in the way they behaved, cheering on their
team mates and showing exemplary behaviour throughout the day. It was wonderful to see how many of
our students ran a personal best time this year, improving their previous years results with some students
showing significant gains. Thank you to Mrs Tolley for her training and organisation of this event and to Mr
Hanson and parents for supporting our students.
NAPLAN Testing
As discussed recently, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy or NAPLAN testing
which is conducted across Australia, will be happening next week on May 10, 11 and 12. A reminder that
these tests are conducted with all Year 3 and Year 5 students on these dates and we encourage all
students to complete the tests. If your child will be away for some reason on one of these days, we would
ask that you contact your child’s teacher so they are aware of this. Scope for catch up tests is very limited
so please make sure students are at school on those days.
Corridor Access Policy
A big thankyou to the excellent response we have had from parents following our corridor access policies
between 8:50 – 9:00am and prior to 3:30pm. Some of our students have slightly altered arrangements to
this, as part of their learning plan.
Education Week May 16th – 21st
A reminder that Education week will be held from May 16th – 21st and we encourage all prospective
parents book in for one of our tour events. Current parents, please take note of the activities and events
we have during the week and we look forward to seeing you at these events.

Team blogs
By the end of today, every team will have a Blog on our school website for parents to have a look at. Go to
http://www.cliftonspringsps.vic.edu.au/ to check out your child’s grade.
Until next week, I wish everyone a wonderful week and remind all families that maximising attendance is a
critical factor in your child achieving their potential so, remember it’s not OK to be away unless you’re sick!

GRIP LEADERSHIP
CONFERENCE On the 14
th of April, ten of our Year 5 and 6
SRC students were lucky enough to attend a
GRIP Leadership Conference in Geelong
West. The day consisted of a variety of
leadership games, activities and scenarios
that were aimed at improving student
leadership within our school community.
Overall it was a fantastic and educational
day for all.
Thank you to Kate Page & Shane Cumming
for volunteering to drive our students.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY On Wednesday 27th of April, Bryce Hanson and myself had the pleasure of taking 20
students from Clifton Springs to Eastern Gardens for the District Cross Country
Competition. It was not the usual Cross Country conditions being a warm and windy day, but
this don’t not stop our team putting in 100% effort in their individual races!
The 10 year olds raced over 2km and the 11/12 year olds had the tough 3km course with an up-
hill finish. Our results for the day were fantastic with the majority of our runners finishing in
the top third of the field.
Some runners had exceptionally good performances and personal best times but narrowly
missed making it through to the Division Competition, in particular Adam Towse (10th) in the 11
year old boys and Bronny Illsley (13th) in the 12 year old girls.
The highlight of the day for the staff was the exceptional behaviour and sportsmanship shown
by the Clifton Springs Students. A special thanks goes to Heidi Westwick who worked as a
course Marshall all day.
Thanks to Mr Hanson for
coming along and all other
teaching staff who
changed their teaching
timetables to help make
the day happen!
Mrs Tolley

Term 2 Whole School Writing Task
This week at school your child/ren will be involved in a whole school writing activity that gives us the opportunity to see how our Writing Program is progressing across all levels. Every class from P-6 will have the same writing prompt (see picture) and we would like you to become involved by talking to your children to generate lots of ideas for a narrative. These ideas can be written in their diaries or the children could draw pictures and bring them to school to prompt them while they are writing. A great way to have this discussion is while you are having dinner (preferably without the TV on) or in the car on the way to any activities.

Recently Amanda, Mr. Richards a group of interested parents and I, met with the Bellarine Community Health Dietician, Hilary Hoevenaars, to discuss food, nutrition, expectations and lunch boxes. To be completely honest, I went into the presentation thinking that I knew quite a lot about healthy food and lifestyle, it's not rocket science after all! However, I walked out realising that there is actually a lot more to raising healthy eaters than meets the eye.
Over the next few weeks I will briefly discuss some of her main points; 1. Division of responsibility 2. Family Meals 3. Taste Development
4. Spoken & Unspoken Message
1. The division of responsibility basically means that it is the parents job to decide WHAT foods/drinks to offer children. Older children may be offered a choice between 2 healthy options (eg. A ham sandwich or a cheese sandwich). Children decide WHETHER/HOW MUCH they will eat of the food offered. Hilary also stressed that we are often overfeeding our children when the ensuing tantrum is regularly about something other than hunger. Children learn very quickly that saying "I'm hungry" gets attention from a parent often straight away, where little else often does. Please see Amanda or myself if you are interested in any of the brochures or information booklets supplied by Hilary. Kellie Hewson, Student Welfare Coordinator
