However, it is not. It’s about making decisions about our spiritual well-being or a spiritual makeover for us. This is the time of year we usually examine ourselves and make resolutions for self-improvements. Many people write these resolutions down or tell someone so they’ll feel some level of encouragement to stick to them. While we reflect on “a new you makeover for 2012,” let’s also contemplate these common clichés and some spiritual applications. In 2012, let’s “put our hand to the plow.” The Christian life is compared to many activities in life like running a race, winning a fight, sailing on the sea and plowing a field. Jesus said, “No one having put their hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). A farmer who looks back while plowing will have crooked rows. A Christian who looks back longingly to the life they left behind will find that they may stray if they don’t keep their eyes fixed on Jesus. This year, let’s keep our eyes focused on Jesus and never look back. This coming year, let’s “put our ears to the ground.” We generally use this phrase to refer to listening to feedback from our friends. This practice comes to us from Native Americans who had a practice of listening for the approaching horses or buffalo by literally putting an ear to the ground. We are wise to listen to the council of those who love and support us. “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be more wise, teach a just person, and they will increase in learning, a correction enters more into a wise person than a hundred stripes onto a fool” (Proverbs 9:9; 15:5; 17:10). We should also be open to those who have been offended by our actions and words who come to talk to us (Matthew 18:15-18). In 2012, let’s “put our mind in gear.” We generally apply this phrase to someone we catch daydreaming. Which literally means the person needs to “concentrate on the task at hand.” King Solomon was asked to serve God with a willing mind (1 Chronicles 28:9). St. Paul says, we must “renew our minds” (Romans 12:2). If we have just been going through the motions of worship and Christian living, it’s time to “put our mind in gear” and get serious about serving with all our heart, soul and mind. This year, let’s “keep our feet to the fire.” A person whose feet are held to the fire tends to become enthusiastic. To put a person’s “feet to the fire” is to make them responsible for their actions. God does hold us responsible for our actions. St. Paul wrote, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone will receive the things done in their body, according to what they have done whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10). In this coming year, “let’s keep our eyes on the prize.” A person with their eyes on a prize has it as the object of their heart, the apple of their eye. The person wants nothing more; the person will settle for nothing else. St. Paul had his eyes on the prize of heaven, “beloved, I count not to have already apprehended it, but this one thing I do know: forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forward to those things which are before me, I press on toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13, 14). May our eyes stay on the prize until we hold it in our hands. A “new you make over for 2012?” Beloved, there is no better time to start than today. Blessings for the journey, Rev. Chuck

Christmas Cookie Sale—-The youth would like to thank everyone who supported

our annual Christmas Cooke Sale again this year. We sold over 90 pounds of hom

cookies and fudge on Saturday and after church on Sunday. The money raised will be used to

help cover the cost of Mission Trip 2012 and to buy gift cards for the children at the

Cleveland Christian Hom

@ Eaton to share

with our guests during the tours.

m JUDY PONTING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In the near future, you will be receiving a letter asking you to help establish a

scholarship fund in the name of Judy Ponting. The funds raised will help commissioned

(licensed) ministers increase their education and skills in serving churches.

Com

missioned Ministers seeking ordination by way of the apprentice track is a new

kind of ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). There are people who feel

called by God to serve as Christian ministers who do not have the form

al education required

for ordination. They do not have the funds, the time, or other means to get a seminary

education. They have the skills and the gifts for ministry but are limited in the opportunities

available for service. Under this new order of ministry, those called to serve Christ as

ministers can follow a disciplined process to obtain com

petency in the 16 areas of ministry

required for ordination.

Judy Ponting served Christ and His church at North Eaton for many years. She

worked hard to increase her skills in ministry for no other reason than to be a better

servant. She did this on her own. The new order of ministry provides people like Judy with

more direction and opportunities to learn and grow. Your support to the Judy Ponting

Memorial Scholarship Fund will honor Judy, but most importantly it will greatly enhance the

quality of the ministers who serve in this new order.

The funds raised will be sent to the Regional Office of Ohio to be dispersed to those

Com

missioned Ministers who qualify for assistance. Please send your gift to the church or

place it in the offering plate on Sunday morning.

Please give generously to this important ministry.
