out efforts in the following major thrust areas for the development of Tamilnadu

State Centre:

• Organizing National Conventions; All India Seminars; Workshops and

Other Interactive Activities.

* Disseminating the engineering knowledge among the professional

engineers is the main motto of IEI. To achieve this watchword the

National Conventions; All India Seminars; Workshops etc. should be

conducted regularly correlating the Central and State Government

programmes as well as considering the needs of the Industries and

social sectors so that the professional competence of IEI engineers

could be utilized to productive usage.

He assured that his team was committed to organize as much technical

events as possible to keep the flag of Tamilnadu State Centre fly high, for the

benefit of engineering fraternity and society.

• The Industry - Institute Interaction

* Industrialization is the back bone for speedy growth of an economy

and engineering plays an important role. The IEI - Industry interaction

should form an important functional area for future activities.

Tamilnadu State Centre will play a main hub for Industry - Institute

Interaction.

At this juncture, he requested the Guest of Honour Er. K.R.S.R. Krishna

to help him in involving more and more industries to have a healthy interaction

on the real demand of the industries from academic side.

• Placement of Engineers

* Finding a placement for engineering graduates in a suitable job

becomes the order of the day, since a good number of engineering

graduates flourishes out of the Engineering Colleges every year.

Dr. G. Ranganath emphasized the importance of IEI role on the placement.

He assured that Tamilnadu State Centre would play a vital role on training the

engineering graduates for their placement in industries.

• Technicians' Chapter

* IEI, Headquarters is emphasizing to increase the membership of

Technicians' Chapters which is a major source of income to IEI,

providing opportunity for the Diploma Students and Higher Secondary

passed students with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as their main

subjects or equivalent. This opens the doors for the candidates who

are job goers and low income groups who are not afford to pay the

regular Engineering degree fees.

Dr. G. Ranganath told that launching tuition centres to guide the Technicians'

Chapter candidates to fare well in the Institution's examinations and exploring

the ways and means to start tuition centres at Tamilnadu State Centre would

be evaluated by the present committee.

• Students’ Chapters

* Budding Engineers are going to be the future sculptors of the modern

society. If they aspired to become professional engineers in future,

the Institution is always there to guide them to the right path. IEI

has opened the threshold of professionalism in engineering by

establishing Student Chapters at Engineering Colleges and Polytechnic

Colleges.

He said that a separate Committee would be formed to promulgate the

importance of establishing Students' Chapters at all Engineering Colleges and

Polytechnic Colleges under the jurisdiction of Tamilnadu State Centre.

• Membership Drive

* ‘Membership growth’ is one of the foremost and primary objective of

IEI. It is the duty of the Centres all over India to help our Institution

to grow through its membership drive. Tamilnadu State Centre plays

a main role by increasing its membership there by adding strength to

IEI, Headquarters.

World Habitat Day is celebrated on first Monday in the month of October

every year, to pay attention towards the need for better, affordable shelter

all over the world. It is the birth right of every citizen to have a shelter with

basic amenities to live on. It is very unfortunate to state that while birds,

animals and other species have their own shelters, the six sensed human

beings are not fully provided with shelters. Even though the Government is

taking serious efforts in providing 100% shelter through various policies like

PPP (Private Public Partnership), to safeguard the interest of the society, it

is the responsibility of every Civil Engineer to contribute their ideas in

providing a comfortable and affordable shelter to all. Taking all these into

consideration the theme for World Habitat Day 2016 has been selected as

“Housing at the Centre”.

In this connection , the Tamilnadu State Centre of the Institution of Engineers

(India) observed the World Habitat Day on Wednesday the 5th October 2016

at the IE(I) Auditorium, Chennai. Er P R Seshadri FIE, Past Chairman, IE(I),

TNSC welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest Er M Kumar,

Chief Engineer, Tamilnadu Police Housing Corporation Ltd., Chennai.

In his speech, Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation has implemented some

important techniques in giving comfortable and cost effective housing to the

personnel of Uniformed Services Department. Originally the Policemen were

provided with line huts, having single multipurpose room, front and rear

verandah, and very basic amenities with tiled roof. After formulation of Tamil

Nadu Police Housing Corporation, various improvements were made in the

housing for personnel of Uniformed Services Department. The residential

quarters now being constructed have two bedrooms with common and

attached toilets, drawing cum dining room, kitchen and work area and

balconies. Modern and updated materials are being used for flooring,

plumbing, sanitation, electrical works, wood works, painting, etc.

Tamil Nadu Police Housing has also ventured in converting the waste into

usable materials. In the universe no material is considered as a waste, since

a waste is a raw material for a new material. The following are the efforts

taken by Tamil Nadu Police Housing in converting the waste into usable

material.

• The paver blocks and concrete tiles are manufactured from copper slag,

a waste product of Sterlite Industry at Thoothukudi in the Central Prison

Palayamkottai

• Graphite bricks are manufactured from graphite, a waste product at the

Central Prison Madurai.

• Fly ash bricks are manufactured from fly ash, a waste product of Thermal

Power Station at Ennore in the Central Prison Puzhal.

For manufacturing the above products the inmates of Prison are used. These

products are also used in Tamil Nadu Police Housing schemes.

Similarly the waste water is recycled in Sewer Treatment Plant functioning

at Avadi Police Quarters campus, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, Central Prison

at Madurai. The treated water is used for cultivation and fish culturing. The

surplus treated water stacked at ponds for fish culturing is also serving as

a source for raising the ground water level. The Corporation has planned to

implement this recycling in all Central Prisons and major quarters' campus.

For providing affordable housing and to encourage fast track construction,

Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation has proposed to construct individual

houses with sandwich panels for walls and roofs in moffusil areas and precast

techniques for multistoried construction at urban areas.

Er P R Seshadri, FIE, Past Chairman, IE(I), TNSC presented the memento

to the Chief Guest Er M Kumar and Er D Sundarasekaran FIE, Honorary

Secretary proposed the vote of thanks.

World Habitat Day 2016 - “Housing at the Centre” – 05.10.2016

Addressing the august audience Er. P. Raveendran, said that Engineers were

the architects of any society to design machines, maintenance, emerging

infrastructure etc. Apart from all professional Engineers brought value addition

to life, he said.

After crossing Industrial revolution, the human being were living in IT

revolution encompassing the mobile revolution and communication. It was a

proud moment to say that 80% of Indian engineers were dominating the U.K

and U.S.A's IT field. In India 15lakhs of fresh engineers were coming out every

year and they should be molded to the requirements of Industries which would

lead to enormous infrastructure development.

He desired that IEI had got a role to polish the engineering knowledge of

the fresh engineering graduates through conduct of more Seminars, Symposia,

Workshops etc. at their Institution itself which would propagate the real mission

of IEI to the society at large.

Earlier Dr. G. Ranganath, Chairman and Er. K.P. Ramanathan, Immediate
