RECENT TRENDS IN NURSING: AN UPDATE
1. Summary of leanings of RRT and 3D’s
The acronym RRT stands for the Rapid Response Team. It is a group of people which
may be composed of ICU nurses, Respiratory therapist, interventionist, hospitalist and Physician.
As the name itself Rapid Response Team acts in situation that needed emergency intervention
such as changes in vital signs, level of consciousness and when the staffs is worried about the
client’s condition. The difference between the RRT and arrest code team is that RRT can be
called at any time by anyone in the hospital to assist in the care of the patient who appears
acutely ill or before the patient has a cardiac attack. The rapid response team is available to
respond, accessible, trained and skilled. To call on the rapid response team it may be Overhead
page, in house phones, and beeper. The Rapid Response Team is trained on advance life support,
SBAR which stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation and training
on communication skills, this ensures the client that they are receiving the best intervention for
the client. In the RRT they use a standardized tool on communicating which is known as SBAR,
this ensures that critical information about the patient is communicated efficiently.
On dealing with 3D’s or Dementia Delirium and Depression I learned on a lot of things.
Dementia is a decline in memory, judgement and reasoning. It has many forms like vascular,
Lewy body, Parkinsons disease, front temporal dementia and the mixed type. Some of the
warning signs of dementia is the loss of functioning and cannot complete task and misplacing
things and inability to retrace steps. The difference of dementia and delirium is dementia
symptoms are usually progressive in nature. It begins in subtle manner while delirium happens
quickly. It usually happens with an onset of agitation, hallucinations and rapid changes in mood.
Depression on the other hand is markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities.
It may be caused by different stressful events such as death of significant person, problem in
financial, retirement and many more. Some signs of having depression are inability to sleep,
decreased energy sudden weight loss or gain. The management in 3Ds are supportive care,
management of underlying cause and medications.
2. What learning can you apply as a nursing student in 3d’s and RRT
As a nursing student I can use my knowledge on dementia, delirium and depression in
helping in clients who are experiencing such condition. By that I know what I should do and I
can be more therapeutic to my patients. In Rapid Response Team as a nurse I can use my
knowledge in SBAR which stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation
in communicating the client’s information effectively. So by that I can be an advocate to my
patient in rendering on his/ her needs. Also the Rapid Response Team makes me realize that I
need to improve on assessing my clients and giving the interventions needed. For me Rapid
Response Team is need in the Philippines nowadays to give to the clients the best treatment they
need.
3. What is the nursing law in the Philippines?
The nursing law in the Philippines is the Republic Act 9173 An act providing for a More
Responsive Nursing Profession. RA 9173 is also known as "Philippine Nursing Act of 2002." In
the nursing profession a person shall be judged to be practicing nursing when he/she or in with
others performs nursing services to individuals, families and communities in any health care
setting. It includes nursing care during conception, labor, delivery, infancy, childhood, toddler,
preschool, school age, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. As independent practitioners, nurses
are primarily responsible for the promotion of health and prevention of illness. Members of the
health team, nurses shall collaborate with other health care providers for the curative, preventive,
and rehabilitative aspects of care, restoration of health, alleviation of suffering, and when
recovery is not possible, towards a peaceful death. In the said article it is nursing is defined as the
diagnosis and treatment of human response to active or potential problem.
4. Define nursing in your words
For me nursing is associated with the word care. When we care to somebody we give
care to somebody we gave everything in order to make them feel comfortable. In nursing we
apply holistic approach in which the nurses not just help in treatment physically but in all
aspects. The nurses also has clinical eye to see the need or problem of the patient and help the
patient in treatment of current problem and potential one
