Why Install a Ducted System?Have you sat in your home, completely sapped by the heat in summer? Have you tossed and turned through sleepless hot nights? If so, you may be considering overcoming the heat with an air conditioning system from now on.

However before you spend between $1200 and $4000 for models such as individual room units and wall splits, spend a few minutes reading this booklet and get a better understanding of what a reverse cycle ducted system is and check out the ultimate in efficiency and super quiet operation for heating and cooling.

If all the tricks to keep the heat out of your home in the first place fail, a ducted air conditioner is really the only equipment that cools your home effectively.

Reverse-Cycle: Cooling and HeatingSimilar to above but in reverse have you been uncomfortably cold during winter months? Well in a similar way to fridges, reverse-cycle air conditioning uses electricity to “pump” heat from one place (say, the hot inside of your home) to another (such as the outside of your home) - that’s why they’re also called heat pumps.

Reverse-cycle models can also heat your home because even cold winter air contains usable ‘heat’ that can be pumped inside. They produce a higher heat output than their electricity input - which gives them an ‘efficiency’ of up to 250% more.

That’s why this method of heating is much cheaper and produces less of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) than other types of electric heating such as radiators, column or fan heaters. Your running costs are less and it’s clean and instant.

The residential air conditioning market has increased dramatically over the last few years partly due to the changing weather patterns and also due to the development of new designs and cost effectiveness of reverse cycle ducted air conditioning. In today’s busy world, comfort at home is no longer regarded as a luxury, but a necessity, it also improves the property value of your home and gives you a higher quality of living. It’s whisper quite operation is a big advantage.

Quality Air will now explain to you the various parts of the system.

Quality Air makes a sad, hot home, a happy, cool home!

4 Quality Air | guide to home air conditioning

The SystemConsidered to be the ultimate in cooling and heating, the system comprises an indoor section called a Fan Coil, an outdoor section called a Condenser and duct or air tubes through the house servicing rooms via ceiling outlets. A zoning system is selected to suit your needs, reducing both the initial and running cost.

The capacity of the air conditioning unit has to be designed to adequately condition a total area (that is selected by you) and you would expect the system to cool this area in the peak of summer. You can be left ‘hot’ under the collar if the system can only cool one of say three or four recommended zones. And with the changing weather patterns over the last few years this has become an important issue.

The Outdoor Unit (Condenser)The Condenser (which contains the compressor and other vital parts) is mounted on rubber feet and is normally located outside the home, and is generally positioned outside the bathroom or laundry where suitable on a concrete path, or Quality Air can provide brackets or pavers, if necessary.

Check out the Advanced Aerodynamics Winglet Fan by contacting your Quality Air specialist, for super quite operation.

The Indoor Unit (Fan Coil)The Fan Coil is installed in the roof space and is generally suspended from the roof trusses by hangers, Quality Air also provides a galvanised safety tray under the unit, both the fan coil and tray are fitted with drains. This method of installation allows for any contingency that may arise.

The fan coil unit is normally regarded as the Heart of the system and is responsible for the air distribution throughout the home. Quality Air’s engineering expertise not only selects the right heating and cooling requirements for your system, but also takes great care in the selection of the fan coil units total air capacity (to be able to deliver the right amount of air volume to each room). Unfortunately this is some times overlooked and can lead to disappointment of performance. Units with higher air flow will be able to cool your room faster and achieve a more even temperature through it.

Refrigerant Lines The indoor unit and outdoor unit are connected by two copper pipes containing refrigerant. One or both of these pipes are insulated. For new homes the pipes generally are fitted in the wall cavity and for established homes the pipes are covered with a colourbond cover to suit the size and colour if possible as the downpipe, to blend in with the appearance of your home.

Electricity SupplyElectricity is supplied to the system through circuit breakers (or fuses) from the main switchboard. Some systems may require a 3 phase upgrade, generally this is included in the price of established homes. Quality Air can provide you with a separate quotation for this requirement or your builder would provide a 3 phase isolation switch adjacent to the outdoor unit, if you are renovating or building a new home. It is critical that this is discussed before electrical work commences, or a higher charge could apply to redo the work. The wiring system is installed with the refrigeration pipes in the wall cavity (for new homes) or in the exposed pipe covers outside your home for existing houses. High capacity systems are available, for single phase power but this requires an inspection for certain circumstances.

Return Air - Filter AssemblyThe return air duct plenum has a starter kit manufactured of sheet metal that is insulated and connected to the fan coil unit on the air on side or air inside. There are normally one or two flexible ducts fitted to the starter kit and interconnected to a return air grill which usually mounted in the hallway. Above the return air grill is a internally insulated plenum called a return air capper.

As return air is drawn through the grill it passes through a removable air filter (hinged) behind the grill, where dust and lint are collected and deposited on the filter, this gives you a cleaner and more healthy environment and a cleaner home with less dust. The filter should be serviced (cleaned) every 3-4 months, depending upon the environment. Filters that become clogged not only create reduction in the amount of air flow that the unit can deliver but also causes the system to have a pressure drop (this is because the unit can not cycle off and on as normal) resulting in increase in running cost.

Ceiling Registers - OutletsCeiling registers are fitted in each room to be air conditioned. The registers are connected to the system via the flexible duct in the roof space and are necessary to control the air distribution and to minimise noise.

They come in a variety of shapes e.g. Round, Square or Linear slot. The round ceiling outlet is the most commonly used as it blends in with the decor of most homes.

The Control StationTurn on to a better lifestyle with the new touchpad control. The easy to use touchpad control unit mounts neatly to the wall and features a slim-line profile to fit in with any home decor and comes with a range of design features such as: temperature sensors, twin control option, set and forget, automatic fan control. Auto heat / cool change-over dry mode function, may vary depending on brands.

Now you can experience the level of comfort, reliability and control in your own home with the new innovative range of reverse cycle ducted air conditioning units. Generally you would set at 19-21 degrees in winter and 22-25 degrees in the summer. control station electronic zone control

Supply Air DuctQuality Air provides internally insulated sheet metal plenums connected to the fan coil unit on the air discharge side of the unit. This duct is usually called a starter kit and is used to distribute the volume of air to the different zones. Each area designed to be heated or cooled has a system of flexible duct that is installed in the roof space and connected to the zones and in turn to each ceiling outlet in these areas.

The starter kit is an important component of the system and should be designed by a air conditioning specialist. It is manufactured from sheetmetal, with insulation fitted internally, for thermal and acoustic reasons. The starter kit would generally have two or three main branch lines.

Zone DampersFor maximum comfort Quality Air recommends your air conditioning system have zone dampers installed to ensure the correct amount of air is distributed to each room. The zone dampers also create the maximum efficiency and performance of your total system, and in the long term will save on the total running cost. There are many types of zone dampers in the market today, from the conventional mod motor type mounted in a round spigot called (Barrel-damper or In-line damper) to the new type Next Generation zone damper called Exact Air Regulator, that incorporate an opposed blade damper system providing a precise method of air management. The exact air regulator has a 10 year warranty. This can be discussed in further detail with your Quality Air consultant. When designing your air conditioning system your Quality Air consultant would divide the home into a number of zones to suit your requirements. The system would then be able to isolate areas that are not required, thus saving you energy and running costs.

Quality Air quality quotation, design and installation

ducting - fire rated

flexible duct - EAR

Flexible DuctQuality Air only use fire rated flexible duct, although a little more expensive it’s construction ensures a long life span in all ambient conditions. This flexible duct has 50mm thick R1.0 rated insulation fitted on the outer sleeve, and faced with reinforced multiple layered aluminium foil laminated bonded by fire retardant resin.

This flexible duct is designed for the domestic and commercial air conditioning industry and has a 10 year warranty.

Quality Air highly recommends this type, than other cheaper products available because of its low resistance, excellent acoustic properties, long life and compliance with all current relative standards.

The starter kit, zone dampers and flexible duct are very important components of your system. If the fan coil unit is regarded as the Heart of the system then it is the distribution system, that performs the critical role of the Circulatory system responsible for the efficient delivery of balanced and precisely regulated air flow to all areas of your home. If any of these three components listed above are lacking you can experience a failure with your air conditioning system that can cause gross inefficiency, more expensive to use and may haunt you for years to come.

Zoning ControlThe zone control is normally a bank of switches mounted in the hallway next to the control station. Each zone is identified by labels. This type of system generally has a constant / permanently on zone. e.g. Kitchen area.

Quality Air can also provide for you the next generation touch pad control that has an elegant, simple to use panel that clearly indicates which zones are in use by lighting up the led indicators. An option of a second station is available for double storey or large homes. This zone station also provides an automatic constant control that eliminates the need of a permanently on constant zone, thus saving energy and running costs.

Check out with your Quality Air specialist the new trends in climate control systems such as:

• VAV - Temperature Control - separate temperature to individual rooms.• Control air - automatic climate control option.• Remote control - wall sensors. • Touch Screen / Touch Pads.

10 Quality Air | guide to home air conditioning

Fresh AirFresh Air is generally recommended but this will depend upon occupancy of the dwelling. This can be done by installing as an option a separate filtered duct run to the outside air area, or leaving a window slightly a jar, however this will affect efficiency slightly of the unit due to drawing in hot air. Quality Air will advise you on this benefit.

DrainsAir Conditioning units, when heating or cooling will de-humidify the areas being cooled which causes condensation. This moisture is collected and drained into a drain or roof gutter and then down storm water pipes. These are cleaned when servicing the equipment. Quality Air uses as a precaution a safety tray to suit the unit in so in the unlikely event of blockage, the safety tray will catch any overflow and drain out separately. When heating is selected the outdoor unit will have moisture run off. This is normal operation in winter months.

safety tray

inverter model conventional model

fresh air

NoiseThis is a critical issues in today’s environment with most local councils having strict requirements. Generally the allowable requirements are when measured at your neighbours house (in the room affected).

7-00 am - 10 -00 pm no louder than 50 db or 10-00 pm to 7-00 am no louder than 40 db or 5 db above background noise (whichever louder).

Quality Air will take into careful consideration positioning and selecting of suitable brands to ensure no interference to neighbours, generally away from you and your neighbours sleeping areas.

What’s an Inverter?Through new, advanced technology, Inverter air conditioners are more economical to operate and quieter to run than conventional units. They can handle greater extremes in temperature, are smoother and more stable in operation and reach the desired temperature more quickly than conventional air conditioners.

Inverter Control The Inverter component allows the outdoor unit to vary it’s speed and output to match the required capacity of the indoor unit. Thus, the Inverter model can achieve 30% more operating efficiency than conventional models and therefore, is much cheaper to run.

Highly Efficient R410A refrigerant The R410A refrigerant, which is commonly used in most Inverter ducted systems, has zero ozone depletion potential as it contains no chlorine. R410A also provides excellent stability and low toxity, as well as offering superior energy saving.

Quality Air your ducted air conditioning specialists

Service or Maintenance of EquipmentUnits should be serviced every 12 months depending upon the type of use. Quality Air gives you the first service free if you have them install your system. This is done by checking several components and equipment to insure all items are performing to their expectation. e.g. duct not come loose, gas charge correct, drains working etc, etc. This service is recorded on a service form and you will receive a copy once the work is performed. However you should clean your filter approx every 3-4 months, which is situated behind the return air grill in your system. This will be shown to you on completion of your system being installed. To keep your system at peak efficiency call Quality Air to arrange for your regular service once your system is installed.

Unit EfficiencyUnits are controlled by thermostats which have sensors in the return air or on the controller. Systems are designed to compensate as much as possible temperature variance. Temperatures to different rooms will fluctuate a few degrees depending upon sun positioning and also upstairs and downstairs in hi-set homes. However this temperature variance is minor when considering the outdoor temperature (see page 7, Zoning Control for more information). Adjustments can be made to lessen the variance if too great by air balancing and this can be done at any time after installation. Inverter Control is another method which controls compressor speed to increase or decrease capacity. Your Quality Air consultant can advise you further on this type of system.

System DesignSystems are designed to give you a temperature difference of 8ºC between outside and inside, although more can be obtained by insulation, and methods of usage, this can be discussed. Brisbane and outlying areas are used as a basis for design systems, extreme climate conditions are not generally taken into account unless specifically requested. Again less zones used the more capacity can be directed to smaller areas in this instant.

Approx Cost of Running a Ducted Air Conditioning SystemFirst it is important to understand that there are several conditions that will vary the cost...such as:

Insulation This will reduce the overall running cost by keeping out the heat;

Total Area Obviously the larger the area or the more zones on, the longer the unit will run.

The Weather The hotter or cooler the day, the longer the compressor will run, having an influence on power consumption.

Time How often and how long you run the unit, again will effect power consumption.

Temperature What temperature you want, say difference between 22ºC and 24ºC will also influence the cost by the unit running longer.

So, with all the above conditions taken into consideration, the average approximate cost would be:

2 HP 12* cents per hour It would be expected to make a difference of $80-$110* to your electricity bill per 1/4 depending upon the size and above conditions over the year.

3 HP 18*cents per hour

4 HP 25* cents per hour

5 HP 28* cents per hour

6 HP 30* cents per hour

*Figures may vary in some circumstances.

Fact: The sour taste of poor quality is long remembered after forgetting the smaller price difference for a quality installation.

Benefits of InsulationShould I install it or not??

Quality Air highly recommends that insulation R 2.5 / R 3.5 be installed in the ceiling space. The insulation can make a considerable difference in size and operational cost of your air conditioning system. Insulated ceilings will reduce the heat flow between the outside and the inside of your home, keeping it warm in winter and cool in summer. In summer up to 30-45% of the heat in your home enters through an uninsulated ceiling. The temperature drop is generally 3-5oC inside the home so the saving is worth consideration as these savings continue year in and year out.

There is also the introduction of energy-efficiency provisions into the Building Code of Australia. These measures primarily aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by generation of electricity come in to effect on September 1 2003. We will provide you with this service as an option on your proposal, for homes built before this date.

For the first time in much of the state, new homes must have ceiling insulation and in some cases wall insulation. The Government intended progressively to Raise the Bar. The code which takes precedence over local government planning scheme provisions, is just the first step to improving the energy efficiency of Queensland homes.

WarrantyWhen you select Quality Air as your air conditioning specialist, Quality Air will give you the confidence that we are providing you with the best possible air conditioning system available. We not only offer the manufacturing warranty but also a Quality Air 5 year written warranty for the total project, valued at $297 and a gift voucher for your first service free, valued at $96, although it would be expected that your system to operate for 20 years or more without any major issues providing your system is regularly maintained.

Roof VentilatorsQuality Air strongly recommends roof ventilators, as they ventilate the roof space where the heat is stored and can penetrate the air conditioning equipment, which decreases the over all efficiency. Units are made to operate in this temperature, however it can have a adverse effect on the overall performance, if not considered. Quality Air can arrange to have these fitted for you.

Quality DesignHigh quality engineering design and keeping abreast with the new technology being developed in the domestic market place, ensures that Quality Air customers are receiving the best system available for their needs, as Quality Air has long recognised their responsibilities to their customers and our commitment to quality and design and providing you with a very efficient system.

Quality Air go on... give us a call, you deserve the comfort

Room Air Conditioners ( RAC )This type is usually fitted in a specially cut opening through a wall or window, with all cooling, heating and circulation components housed in one box. Many models have been carefully designed to blend with furnishings and colour schemes. R.A.C.s are available with a range of cooling and heating capacities to suit most rooms. However they generally are noisy.

PortableAs the name implies, these units are mounted on wheels and can be moved from room to room. With the same components as an R.A.C. they will extract heat and moisture from the air. Small units are most effective as spot coolers rather than full room air conditioners. Portable air conditioners are available in both one-piece and split system configurations. They are very bulky and require emptying of the condensate water.

Split SystemsThese have two functioning components: the compressor/condenser section, which is located outside your home to ensure quiet operation and the section housing the evaporator, positioned within the room, using a free-flow fan to circulate conditioned air. For flexibility, the evaporator units may be mounted either below the ceiling-on the wall, or as a console type, standing on the floor. Either way, the two sections may be installed some distance apart, but must be connected by wiring and refrigerant piping. Split-system air conditioners are available in a wide range of capacities to suit most rooms.

Fact: The sour taste of poor quality is long remembered after forgetting the smaller price difference for a quality installation.

Cost of a Quality InstallationUnits vary in cost depending upon the size of area to be air conditioned, usually small systems start at $8,000 - $10,000 Middle size at $10,000 - $12,900. Larger homes $12,900 upwards. Quality Air will confirm your total outlay once you make arrangements with us. However unit qualities do vary, cheaper units are available.

Generally we recommend the following brands Panasonic, Daikin or Mitsubishi. However, not being fixed dealers we choose what’s best for you. So having read this information we hope it has helped you understand more about what ducted air conditioning is. So give us a call at Quality Air where we consider it a privilege to install your system including all the benefits you have read about. Plus you receive many more once we speak to you as the subject on air conditioning is rather involved. Your gain is using our experience.

Other Types of Air ConditioningThis page is to provide you with a comparison of types, other than ducted systems.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for the excellent job done here.

Our main concern was to have a ducted system that would suit our particular circumstances, and we ended up by choosing you for two reasons. The first, was the fact that you install a number of different brands of air conditioning units, and consequently are not biased towards one particular brand. Secondly, your electrical knowledge was very helpful to us in making our final decision.

I do recall you telling us at the time you came here, that we would have to rely on your integrity. From our experience it has not been misplaced.

The whole operation went very smoothly from start to finish. I wish to commend you and your various staff for a hassle free job.
