How Can You “Resist”Faber-Castell Oil Pastels?

Taking advantage of the fact that oil and water don’t mix, the resist method enables artists to create an interesting visual balance between bold, vibrant colors and the softer tones of washes. The oil pastels are used first to establish lines and tones in an intense layering of pigment that remains on the surface of the paper and then watercolor washes are applied to create color fields and softer tones that are resisted by the oily pastels and are absorbed into the paper. The visual result can be of striking, intense, bold lines and colors surrounded by and modified by softer watercolor washes and transparent color.

Materials: • Faber-Castell Oil Pastels

• Watercolor paints

• Paper

• Tape

• Watercolor brushes

Optional but helpful: Faber-CastellWatercolor Paints

Directions:Select a heavier weight of paper and tape it down to a counter, piece of masonite or some other surface that will not be damaged by water. Tape the paper along the entire perimeter of the paper. This will allow the paper to stay flat once the watercolor dries.

Decide on what figure you would like to draw and use the Oil Pastels to draw bold lines to define your figure. Don’t automatically use black; select a color that will work well with the general final coloring of the figure itself. The colors don’t have to be “realistic” – how about a red elephant for instance? Once the bold defining lines are complete put in some toned areas with less pressure. The goal is to put down various light shades of tone a bit at a time; build up darker tonal areas gradually and perhaps use the side of the pastel rather than the point in order to do this. In these lighter tones, the pastels are applied to the top of the grain of the paper so some of the paper will show through the valleys of the grain of the paper. Add any other detail in the figure and then work on the background

following the same procedure. Finally, build up heavy applications of white where ever you anticipate having a highlight.

Once this is complete apply the watercolor! It can be applied in thin, transparent watery washes or more dense and thicker applications. The deposits of the Oil Pastels will resist the absorption of the watercolor so the color will only be apparent in the areas surrounding the oily pastels. It will be most obvious where the pastels have been applied the heaviest but very subtle color variations can occur when the watercolor stains the valleys of the paper surrounded by the pastels deposited on the peaks in the areas of lighter pastel deposit.

Once the paper is dried, more pastel work can be added and additional applications of watercolor can be painted. Once the paper dries and you are finished carefully remove the tape from the finished piece.
