Robert Q. Riley is anauthor, industrial designer and amechanical engineer with suc-cesses in a wide range of prod-uct categories.
His automotive experienceincludes vehicle styling, packag-ing, and power train design. Hehas produced energy-efficient,high-performance three-wheelroad vehicles, electric andhybrid cars, and conventionallypowered automobiles of up to128-mpg fuel economy. He pio-neered the automotive application of FRP/foam composite, designed GM's Drive I electric car, and developed the urbancar now on display at the American Museum of Science andEnergy at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Today, he is considered oneof the world's foremost pioneers in the design of low-energy-demand passenger cars. His most recent work in the automo-tive field is the 125- to 200+mpg XR3 Hybrid.
Mr. Riley is also a prolific designer outside the automo-tive field. His non-automotive designs range from high per-formance watercraft, submersibles, hovercraft and humanpowered vehicles to fitness and medical products such as theNumo and the award-winning ARRIS medical imaging system. He has been referred to as the "father of the modern bent" forhis early work in revitalizing the highly efficient but largely for-gotten recumbent bicycle. At the beginning of the new millenni-um, he again advanced the state of the art in recumbent designwith the release of his cutting-edge Ground Hugger XR2 car-bon fiber machine. A solar-assist version of the XR2 won firstplace in its category and third place overall in the 2001
Australian World SolarCycle Challenge.
Mr. Riley consultson new product designand strategies. He writesand speaks on sustain-able energy and alterna-tive automobile design. He has led conferenceworkshops and speaks at
industry, scientific, and aca-demic events. He consulted onthe Different Roads automobileexhibit at New York's Museumof Modern Art and was the leadspeaker at the museum's day-long symposium on the futureof the automobile. He was oneof two U.S. technical consult-ants selected by DelcanCorporation to contribute toTransport Canada'sSustainable Transportation Technology Forecast, a study ontransportation solution options for Canada's SustainableDevelopment Strategy
