ABSTRACT
A one unit claim, #1235406 was staked in May 2000 to cover an area of mafic intrusion previously researched and explored by reconnaisance fieldwork by the author. This report describes prospecting work performed in the Fall of 2001 on the above mentioned claim located near the Western boundary of McMahon Township, north of Bruce Mines Ontario, Canada.
The claim is located in the Sault Ste Marie Mining Division. The intent is to sample the creek and all phases of the rock outcrop to further analyize as a possible Diamond Bearing Intrusion. Detailed sampling and mapping is required to delineate this possibility!
HI
INTRODUCTION
A one unit claim, # 1235406 was staked in May 2000 to cover an area of mafic intrusion previously researched and explored by the author.
This report describes prospecting work performed in the Fall of 2001 on the above mentioned claim located near the Western boundary of McMahon Township approximately 40 km's north of the town of Bruce Mines, Ontario on Highway #17 in the Sault Ste Marie Mining Division. Project parameters are summarized in Table l page 2.
The catalyst for investigation of this property was the authors previous research into lamprophyric rocks and their potential as hosts for diamonds. The Bruce Mines area is well known to the author through school and has great historical significance as
the First Copper Mine in Canada developed by white men in 1846.It deserves attention for its proximity to a North striking belt of Alkaline rocks and significant associated
deep regional structures. The property lies at the margin of the Superior craton contact zone.Access to the property was by traversing bush trail starting at the SE corner of Stuart Lake and heading
West; a sometimes arduous 6 kilometer hike through rolling terrain and wet areas. This will bring you to the NE#l post just West of the trail near Lamothe Lake.
Copper Prospects have been worked since the beginning of the last century in the Huronian Rocks between Sault Ste Marie and Sudbury."Copper ore deposits are the most numerous and most widetSpread of all metallic deposits in the North Shore [of Lake Huron] District. Old mines, Prospect pits and undeveloped veins are scattered in extraordinary number all the way from Sault Ste. Marie to the Sudbury Nickel District [Collins 1925, P 125].""The most famous mine of the region was situated at Bruce Mines which was discovered in 1846 (Knight 1915). Between 1848 and 1916 it produced ore valued from 3.5 to 7 million dollars (Collins, 1925) and production ceased in 1921 (Shklanka, 1969)." (F.W. Chandler, 1973, p 52)
A. Murray and W. E. Logan started mapping investigations in 1847 through 1863; W. H. Collins of the Geological Survey of Canada established the Nomenclature for the Huronian Formations in 1925. Successive Geologists include R. G. McConnel (ODM, 1926 - Sault area), W.D. Harding (ODM, 1939 - Flack Lake); M.J. Frarey (GSC, 1959-1971, Echo Lake/Brace Mines area) and J. A. Robertson began their work after the discovery of Uranium in the Blind River-Elliot Lake area by Frank Joubin and associates around 1953. Additional notable work was done by R. E. Hay(GSC 1961 - Sault area) and J. E. Thomson et al (ODM 1957,1961 Espanola area).Geochronological studies of the North Shore area began in 1960 and R. VanSchmus presents an excellent review of the area in 1965.The Regional Geology of the Sault-EJliot Lake area is summarized in map #2108, 1967 by P. E. Giblin and E. J. Leahy. F, W. Chandler began his studies of the Huronian Rocks in 1969.In McMahon Township important prospects were The Sault Gray Copper Co. Ltd, and The Bruce Mines
Prospect of Romar Mines Ltd.; there is also small occurrences of Silver-Cobalt and Gold mineralization. The author wishes to acknowledge the previous work F. W. Chandler and his studies of the Huronian
Rocks and would like to thank Mr. Mike Hailstone, Sault Ste Marie Resident Geologist for our conversations on Regional Structure and Lamprophyric occurrences. Again F. W. Chandler, GR 112, ODM, 1973 provides an excellent review of McMahon Township.

GENERAL GEOLOGY AND PROPERTY LITHOLOGIES
The Huronian rocks of this area unconformably lie over an Archean Basement of Algoman Granites andGneiss, and metaseds and metavolcanics which are about 2,500m.y. old. (after VanSchmus, 1965)Nipissing Diabase, Olivine Diabase and Lamprophyre intrude these Huronian sediments.VanSchmus concludes the Nipissing Diabase intruded in the North Shore around 2,155m.y. ago, theOlivine Diabase (l,245m.y. ago) and the lamprophyres represent a late stage intrusion of around 1.530m. y.."The Huronian SuperGroup consists of a Northward-trending wedge of clastic sediment, at least 10-15 kmthick, that was derived from the Superior Province craton and prograded Southward (Card et al 1972) into adeep basin of unknown width and lateral extent. The supracrustal wedge was deposited along the riftedsouthern margin of the Superior Province Craton . .. " (Zolnai et al 1983)The dominant structures of the region are the Quirke Syncline, The Chiblow Anticline, and the MurrayFault."The Murray Fault was active for a span of more than 900 m.y., covering an interval greater than 1225 -2,155 m.y. ago." (Van Schmus, 1965)Van Schmus also describes metamorphic activity in the region,"From the available data, it may be reasonably concluded that the Blind River-Bruce Mines area wasaffected by the Penokean orogeny and that the igneous and metamorphic activity associated with thePenokean Orogeny reached a peak 1700 - 1800 m.y. ago and ceased shortly afterward."
From F. W. Chandler 1973, it appears the main local structures that may affect the property showing are: The E-W sriking Stuart Creek Fault to the North, the McMahon Lake Fault west of Lamothe Lake and an additional splay off that. He also indicates the Archean Granite to the North has been eroded to a peneplain surface cut by NE and NW steep valleys that have developed on a fracture pattern within the Granite.
The property itself exhibits smaller scale steep sided ravines with shallow streams at their apex. North of the property and Stuart Lake area lie the Archean Granites, porphyritic in nature with banded gneiss. The Huronian rocks rest unconformably on the granites and occupy the S W half of McMahon Township and are intruded by NW striking Nipissing Diabase and granophyric derivatives. Proximal to the property itself the Huronian consists of the Gowganda Formation, greywache, purple sandstone, Lorrain formation sandstone and orthoquartzite. To the S W of McMahon, amygdaloidal volcanic rocks are faulted up against the Gowganda (McMahon L. Fault contact). An ultramafic intrusion cuts the Gowganda on the claim which has not been thoroughly investigated to date or age determined to the author's knowledge. More intrusions may exist on or near the property and may be covered by drift.
PROPERTY DESCRIPTION AND WORK PERFORMED
This property was visited on Monday October 22,2001 during a weeklong prospecting trip October 18 - 24, 2001. ("refer to map MEG2000SSM-1A back sleeve - A2)
I proceeded from the village of Bruce Mines on Highway # 17 Northward on 561 and gravel roads forapproximately 40 kms to the Stewart Lake stop. I then traveled westward by foot from the SE corner ofStewart Lake to formerly Lot 12/con 2 of McMahon Tp. (no survey lines evident) and claim #1235406.It takes about 3 hours on a good day to travel to the property without expensive ATV's.The claim is NW of Lamothe Lake just west of the trail.I then proceeded westerly following the claim boundary at NE#1 to the NW#4 post.Starting at the NW#4 post l proceeded easterly pacing distances, marking in topographic changes, creeklocations and taking alluvial samples and making notes of any outcrop locations and type. There are several creeks crossing the property with steep embankments and ravines up to 20m deep withshallow creeks at the bottoms. The property is forested with jackpine, poplar, spruce, maple and cedar withtag alders along the Stuart creek. The creek that drains Lamothe Lake transects the property and apparentlycontains the mafic intrusion as described by F. W. Chandler in 1973. The creek bottom sometimes containssilty hardened gray clay packed with pebbles resembling a conglomerate. The main creek is shallow andabout 4 metres wide with obvious high water spring runoff channels flanking it.I took a total of 3 alluvial samples along the various creeks but was unsuccessful at sampling the maficintrusion cutting the stream bed; there are many large deadfalls at this location hindering progress, shorttime interval due to travel distance and limited access. There is a prominent slab of sediments jutting outfrom the west embankment of the creek where a small falls forms. The North claim boundary area was mapped; outcrops examined and 3 samples taken.Additional sample analysis results will be included with/or after this preliminary report has been submittedand further work is planned for early Spring of 2002 pending weather and time constraints.
RECOMMENDATIONS
This area was staked to cover an area of lamprophyric intrusion in the hope of finding economicallyexploitable multiple commodities. The author has been studying this type of intrusion for well over 10years in many parts of Ontario. This area is an important region because it represents the contact zone orflank of an ancient rift and possible indent fracture zone. It occurs in the South section of a North trendingAlkaline belt of intrusions.F. W. Chandler (1973) describes the mafic intrusion as a meter wide pyroxene biotite lamprophyre dikeintruding Huronian sediments. There are a few other occurrences recorded in historical documentations inthis region along the North Shore of Lake Huron as exemplified on Fig. 8 of M. Hailstones2000, Sault Ste Marie Report."The Location of known lamprophyres and associated early rift-forming structures is indicated in Figure 8.These deep-seated structures may have provided a conduit for deep mantle material to intrude and possiblyvent to the paleosurface a diamondiferous diatremes. The stuctures are recommended as a guide totargeting lamprophyres for diamond exploration in the Sault Ste Marie District."(M. Hailstone 2000)
This is worthy of further intense investigation to delineate favourable structures and intrusions. These intrusions must be properly identified petrologically, age dated, and further analyzed for their economic potential; they are close to transportation routes and markets.
