COOPER WEST GRID - GEOLOGY REPORT 1989

INTRODUCTION

lll l

The Cooper West Grid was mapped, in an intermittent fashion,

l between July 18, 1989 and August 7, 1989, at a scale of 1:5000.

The baseline of the grid strikes 0450 , with crosslines turned off

l at 100m intervals. A total of 22.7km of line were mapped, and

m ~ compass traverses were used occasionally to extend lines to ensure

complete mapping coverage. Also, the shorelines of the lake and

l its islands were mapped by boat. All claim posts were located and

tied into the grid.

lm A wide range of rock-types were encountered and include

hornblende gabbro, diorite, quartz diorite, tonalite, granodiorite

l pillowed, massive and sheared mafic metavolcanic flows, minor

felsic to intermediate agglomerate, the occasional feldspar/quartz

l feldspar porphyry dyke, and rarely magnetite-chert iron formation.

Mapping was done by J. Lukosius-Sanders, J. Ackert, P. Chiles

l and J. Gray, under the direct supervision of the author.

l LOCATION AND ACCESS

The Cooper West Grid is centrally located within the Muskeg

l West Claim Group, immediately north of Cooper Lake. It is

contiguous with the Cooper Lake Grid to the southeast, and the Meen

l

Lake grid to the west-north west. The Cooper Lake Area is located

B in northwestern Ontario approximately 380km northwest of Thunder

m Bay, (Map 1) 75km west of Pickle Lake and 15km northwest of the

Golden Patricia Mine, which is owned and operated by Bond Gold

l Canada Inc. The Muskeg West Group consists of 520 contiguous

claims that are directly adjacent to the Golden Patricia Mine lease

l (Maps 2 and 3) . The Cooper West Grid covers approximately 26

m ~ claims of the Muskeg West Group.

l Access to the grid is by float or ski-equipped, fixed-wing

aircraft, or helicopter, from Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout or Red

l Lake. Drill roads, and cut trails, allow snowmobile access to the

m grid during the winter from the Golden Patricia Mine.

l TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION

l Much of the Cooper West Grid is underlain by hummocky,

g kettled, recessional moraine, trending roughly ENE-WSW, that is

* forested with a mature growth of jack pine, and locally trembling

l aspen. Small, swampy lakes and ponds surrounded by black spruce,

cedar and tag alder, now occupy the roughly circular kettle

l depressions within the moraine. The margins of the moraine exhibit

moderate, black spruce and white birch-covered, slopes that drop

quickly into black spruce, cedar and alder swamps. The swamp-edged

l Meen River meanders across the northern limits of the grid. Cooper

Lake forms the southern boundary of the grid and is usually lined

lM REGIONAL GEOLOGY

l The Cooper West Grid is located at the Northwestern end of the

Meen-Dempster Greenstone Belt, that occurs within the Archean-age

l Uchi Subprovince of the Superior Structural Province. The belt is

g 95km long, 6 to 10km wide, and forms part of an irregular cluster

* of linear to arcuate volcanic belts situated at the margins of

l late-stage, diapiric, felsic batholiths. It is bounded in the

south by the Carling Granite, the Obaskaka Lake Pluton, and the

l

l

Page 11: RPT ON GEOL MAPPING PROG OF THE COOPER W GRID …...1989; Bond Gold Canada Inc. completed ground EM and l magnetometer surveys on the Meen Lake Grid; and IP- EM surveys on the Cooper

l l 6

Southern Pluton; on the north by the Dobie Lake Batholith; and

l on the west and northwest by the Hammerton Lake Pluton.

The supracrustal rocks of the Meen Lake area are subdivided

l into the Upper and Lower Meen Lake Group, and the Dorothy Lake

Group. The Lower Meen Lake Group, the oldest cycle, consists of

l massive to pillowed, tholeiitic flows, interbedded with oxide

m ~ facies iron formations, and small volumes of felsic to intermediate

flows and tuffs. The Upper Meen Lake Group is composed of

l predominantly intermediate to felsic pyroclastics and subordinate

flows. The Dorothy Lake Group, which occupies a synclinal portion

l of the greenstone belt, is chiefly composed of metasedimentary

g rocks, such as wackes, arenites, conglomerates, and reworked

pyroclastics, with minor, interbedded, mafic and felsic tuffs, and

l mafic to intermediate flows.

l Metamorphism within the belt is generally upper greenschist

. facies, but locally reaches mid-amphibolite facies near the

" surrounding plutons and batholiths.

lStratigraphic units are thought to be recumbently folded about

l an east-southeasterly to southeasterly synclinal axis\that occurs

near the centre of the belt. The complete sequence has been

overturned, with foliation and bedding dipping steeply, to

l subvertically north, but younging to the south.

l

l

Page 12: RPT ON GEOL MAPPING PROG OF THE COOPER W GRID …...1989; Bond Gold Canada Inc. completed ground EM and l magnetometer surveys on the Meen Lake Grid; and IP- EM surveys on the Cooper

l l 7

The northern contact of the belt, defined by the Dobie Lake

l Batholith, focuses a major, dextral, shear/deformation zone known

m as the Bearhead Fault Zone (Osmani and Stott, 1988) . It is

suggested that a splay from this zone hosts the gold-bearing vein

I at the Golden Patricia Mine, but the relationships between the two

structures are still unclear. Another possibility may be that

l movement along the Bearhead Fault Zone reactivated an older

m ~ structure within which the gold was concentrated. Another possible

splay, or subparallel reactivated structure may be responsible for

l Umex's Dorothy Lake gold zone near Cooper Lake.

l Gold mineralization occurs in several geologic environments

H within the Meen-Dempster Belt. The most significant is Bond Gold

Canada Inc. 's Golden Patricia Deposit, containing reserves of about

l 370,000 tons at 0.60 oz. Au/ton, where visible gold occurs within

a narrow, laterally very extensive, shear zone-hosted, cherty-

I appearing quartz vein. Two other significant deposits are Bond

Gold Canada Inc.'s Dobie Zone, containing approximately 300,000

" tons at 0.16 oz. Au/ton? and LAC Minerals's Bancroft Lake Deposit.

l These two deposits are associated With sheared, silicified and

sulphidized zones in close association with iron formations. A

J fourth possibly significant gold deposit is the recently

discovered, Umex Corp. Dorothy Lake Property, where gold occurs

" within a sheared, highly altered and mineralized diorite.

GRID GEOLOGY

m The lithologic units encountered during the 1989 Cooper West

Grid mapping program include: mafic metavolcanic flows;

l intermediate fragmental rocks with felsic fragments; mafic to

intermediate intrusive rocks; some felsic to intermediate feldspar

l porphyry dykes; aplite dykes; and rare chemical sediments.

m ~ Both massive and pillowed mafic metavolcanic flows were

observed, however, the massive varieties appear to dominate. The

l massive flows (Unit la) are fine-grained, dark grey-green to dark

green, weakly to moderately chloritic, variably foliated, locally

l sheared, and locally plagiophyric. Rusty, oxidized foliation

M planes are common, although sulphides are generally not visible.

Occasional narrow, barren, oxidized quartz veinlets occur parallel

l to the foliation. The pillowed mafic flows (Unit Ib) are similar

to the massive flows in colour and texture, but differ due to the

l presence of distinctive, biotitic, locally garnetiferous selvedges.

These selvedges are straight, to gently curvilinear, and l-2cm in

* thickness. Deformation has stretched and elongated the pillows to

l the point where the rocks become banded in appearance. . Top

determinations are impossible. A trace very finely disseminated

J pyrite occurs locally. Localized, discrete, ductile shear zones

have produced chlorite schist (Unit In) in both the massive and

* pillowed flows.

lA well-foliated, pyroclastic metavolcanic rock, possibly a

l

l

l l 9

lapilli tuff, is exposed in two locations along the eastern

B shoreline of Pitu Lake (Unit 2k). This unit contains up to 701,

m highly elongated, cherty, felsic metavolcanic fragments, up to

1.5cm in thickness and 20cm in length, within a silicified,

l intermediate to mafic matrix. The silicification is pervasive and

lensoidal in nature. Approximately 2% blebby pyrrhotite, pyrite

8 and chalcopyrite is observed within the matrix. Minor quartz

veinlets, oriented parallel to the foliation, occur locally.m

l A few outcrops of chert-magnetite iron formation, (Unit 4c)

hosted by massive to sheared, mafic metavolcanic flows occur near

l Cooper Lake. The BIF units are composed of well-laminated to

H bedded, dark blue-green, magnetite-rich bands, and bluish,

* deformed, recrystallized chert bands. Thickness of the three units

l observed ranges from 10cm to 2m. A trace of disseminated to blebby

pyrite occurs rarely.

l. Hornblende gabbro (Units 6c and d) occurs in three sill-like

bodies that have been emplaced subparallel to regional foliation

l and are probably synvolcanic in nature. This mafic intrusive rock-

type is fine to coarse-grained, massive to well-foliated, dark

l green, and spotted to mottled in appearance. Plagioclase content

varies between 2 0* and 50%. The dominant primary amphiboles

" (probably hornblende) are commonly altered to actinolite, chlorite

l and biotite. The rock is usually strongly magnetic due to the

presence of primary, interstitial magnetite; and contains trace

l

l

to 2%, locally up to ICtt, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Locally, the

l gabbro is highly sheared and silicified, and can contain some

m narrow, boudinaged white quartz veinlets. Shearing is commonly

focused near the contacts of the gabbro bodies. Xenoliths of

l variably deformed and altered mafic metavolcanics occur locally.

l The northern 30-4(tt of the grid is underlain by the marginal

m ~ rocks of the Dobie Lake Batholith comprising granodiorite,

tonalite, quartz diorite, and diorite. The most common variety of

l intermediate intrusive rock within this part of the batholith is

diorite (Unit 8e), which is massive to porphyritic, locally

l sheared along narrow, discrete zones, and composed of approximately

g equal amounts of white plagioclase and green amphibole. Biotite,

quartz and chlorite are minor constituents. The diorite becomes

l porphyritic, near the contact with the metavolcanic rocks,

containing up to 4mm long light-coloured, subhedral to euhedral,

l plagioclase laths. Trace finely disseminated pyrrhotite is present

g throughout. The diorite grades into tonalite (Unit 8d) in the

northeastern part of the grid. The tonalite is massive to

l moderately foliated, locally sheared and silicified, and contains

greater than 2 (tt quartz. Biotite and chlorite are minor

l constituents, and some of the plagioclase has been saussuritized.

Minor amounts of granodiorite (Unit 8b) occur in the northern-most

areas of the grid. It is similar to the tonalite but contains 10-

I 35% potassium-feldspar, and considerable biotite. The progression

of rock-types from diorite to tonalite to granodiorite implies that

l

l

Page 16: RPT ON GEOL MAPPING PROG OF THE COOPER W GRID …...1989; Bond Gold Canada Inc. completed ground EM and l magnetometer surveys on the Meen Lake Grid; and IP- EM surveys on the Cooper

l l 11

.the diorite only occurs in quantity in the marginal areas of the

l Dobie Lake Batholith. Occasionally large, altered (amphibolitized;

m locally silicified) xenoliths of mafic volcanics occur near the

margins of the batholith, generally within the diorite and

tonalite.

Tonalite, granodiorite, feldspar porphyry and quartz-feldspar

porphyry dykes commonly intrude the mafic metavolcanic rocks.

MINERALIZATION

l l l l l* No significant sulphide mineralization was observed within the

l area of the grid. Localized shears can contain up to 21

disseminated pyrite in association with silicification, and/or

l carbonatization. Disseminated pyrite and pyrrhotite are a common

accessory within the mafic metavolcanics; l-2% disseminated

' pyrrhotite is common within the intermediate intrusive bodies;

l while 1-101 disseminated pyrrhotite, pyrite and locally

chalcopyrite are observed within the hornblende gabbro bodies.

l Twelve grab and chip samples were taken of various sheared

" and/or mineralized and/or altered rock-types, however, no anomalous

j gold values were encountered (Table 1).

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

m Poor outcrop exposure within the Cooper West Grid area makes

evaluation difficult. The area's location marginal to the Dobie

l Batholith, the presence of discrete shears within all rock types

and some association with sulphide mineralization and alteration

l

suggests better potential than indicated by the poor assays

returned. The following recommendations are warranted:

l 1) Re-evaluation of prior ground geophysics in light of the

rock types and structure observed during mapping, with

l attention paid to the weak to moderate max-min, and

M magnetometer anomalies within the margins of the Dobie

* Lake Batholith, or associated with gabbro/metavolcanic

l contacts.

l 2) IP-EM surveys should be run over favourable geology

coincident with the weak to moderate max-min and

" magnetometer anomalies.

l3) The above anomalies should be drilled if IP-EM results

J are good.

MUSKEG EAST GRID - GEOLOGY REPORT 1990

INTRODUCTION;

g The Muskeg East Grid was mapped, at a scale of 1:5000, between

* September 27, 1990 and October .11, 1990. A total of 90.735 km of

l grid were mapped and 16 rock samples were taken and sent for assay.

g Little outcrop was observed with most of the grid underlain

— j- by swamp, bog or deep glacial overburden. Rock types observed, in

' order of relative abundance are: hornblende gabbro, massive to

l pillowed mafic metavolcanic flows, diorite to quartz diorite,

tonalite, granodiorite and the occasional quartz porphyry dyke,

l intermediate dyke or mafic dyke.

PROPERTY. LOCATION AND ACCESS:

lThe Golden Patricia Mine site can be accessed by float, ski

or wheel -equipped aircraft. The grid can be reached by winter road

l from Pickle Lake. Numerous drill roads cross-cut the grid.

™ TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION:

l Most of the Muskeg East Grid is underlain by flat black spruce

swamps and bogs, locally supporting a growth of tamarack, alder or

P cedar. Lakeshores and the edges of ponds commonly consist of

— r floating mats of sphagnum, locally supporting a sparse growth of

" black spruce and tamarack. Rivers and streams connecting lakes,

l ponds and wet bogs are commonly lined, or choked with tag alder,

dwarf willow or cedar. The southcentral part of the grid is

J characterized by a long, narrow, glacially moulded drumlinoid form

— with a relief of 15-20 m above the surrounding areas of black

" spruce swamp. This drumlin is forested with black spruce, white

M birch, and locally, jack pine. Irregular areas of dry, gently

rolling deep overburden, forested with black spruce, trembling

l aspen, white birch and balsam fir, are scattered throughout the

grid area, generally in the northwest and northeast. Outcrop

B comprises about l* of the grid area and occurs as isolated, low

—j relief islands within areas of swamp, as small, narrow exposed

areas along lakes and streams, and as small, localized

l concentrations. Vegetation generally consists of black spruce and

balsam fir in these areas.

REGIONAL GEOLOGY:

into the

The rocks that underlie the Muskeg East property are centrally

located within the Meen-Dempster metavolcanic belt of the Archean

age Uchi subprovince. The belt was originally mapped by Harding

in 1935; then by Sage, Breaks, and Troup in 1972 (Sage et al,

1976) ; and by Stott and Wilson during 1984 and 1985 (Stott and

Wilson, 1986) .

The Meen-Dempster belt forms part of an irregular cluster of

linear to arcuate volcanic belts situated at the margins

stage diapiric felsic batholiths. The belt is 95 km long

of late-

and 6 to

10 km wide. It is bounded on the south by the Carling Granite, the

Obaskaka Lake Pluton and the Southern Pluton and on the

the Dobie Lake Batholith.

l

l

ll V The geology consists of a northwest-southeast trending

overturned homoclinal sequence representing two mafic to felsic

g volcanic cycles. The cycles are capped by a chemical-sedimentary

H horizon, expressed geophysically as a formational electro-magnetic

' conductor. These cycles, termed the Meen-Jacknife Lake Cycle and

B Dempster Lake Cycle are dominantly mafic volcanics with relatively

narrow intermediate to felsic components.

l~ The Muskeg East property lies entirely within the Meen-

™ Jacknife Cycle volcanics and the Dobie Lake Batholith. The basal

l mafic volcanics are interbedded with a laterally continuous package

of iron formation that can be traced geophysically across the

l property.

The mafic volcanics grade laterally into gabbroic rocks and

other intrusive equivalents, particularly in the Cooper Lake and

Muskeg East areas. Elsewhere they are dominantly pillowed to

l massive flows, commonly intruded by feldspar porphyry dykes and

sills.

m The chemical-sedimentary horizon that caps the Meen-Jacknife

Lake Cycle has been drill-tested by Bond Gold Canada Inc. and by

l Umex. In the Cooper Lake area it consists of a 5 m thick unit of

massive pyrite-magnetite-chert. On the Umex property it consists

l of massive pyrite up to 20 m thick.

The metamorphic grade within the belt is generally of

l l

ll Wgreenschist facies, with amphibolite-grade mineral assemblages

occurring marginal to the Dobie Batholith, and in areas with a

l significant mafic intrusive component.

™ A regional deformation zone is believed to occur at the

l northern margin of the Meen-Dempster volcanic belt. This

structure, which the Ontario Geological Survey (O6S) has called the

g Bearhead Fault Zone, (Osmani and Stott, 1988) is mapped along the

— ~ intrusive contact and within the Dobie Batholith. Another major

" deformation zone is known to enclose the auriferous vein presently

l being mined at the Golden Patricia Mine. The relationship between

these two structures is unclear, although it has been suggested by

g the OGS that the Golden Patricia Zone may be a splay off the

Bearhead Fault Zone, or possibly an older structure reactivated by

* the formation of the Bearhead Fault Zone.

lGold mineralization occurs in several geologic environments

l within the Meen-Dempster Belt. The most significant is Bond Gold

Canada Inc's Golden Patricia Mine presently containing reserves of

B about 446,000 tons at 0.61 oz. Au/ton, where gold occurs within a

M narrow, laterally very extensive, shear zone-hosted quartz vein.

Two other significant deposits are Bond Gold Canada Inc. 's Dobie

l Zone, containing approximately 300,000 tons at 0.16 oz. Au/ton, and

LAC Minerals Ltd. 's Bancroft Lake Deposit containing about 149,000

l tons at 0.19 oz Au/ton. These two deposits are associated with

m sheared, silicified and sulphidized zones in close association with

iron formations. A fourth possibly significant gold deposit has

l l

ll ^recently been discovered by Umex Corp. (now owned by Major General)

near Dorothy Lake, where gold ' occurs within a sheared, highly

altered and mineralized diorite.

™PROPERTY GEOLOGY:

l Lack of outcrop made interpretation of the data, and contact

placement difficult and uncertain. The general picture that

g emerges from beneath the swamp indicates that the northern SO-35%

— - of the grid is underlain by marginal regions of the Dobie

™ Batholith, composed of tonalite, quartz diorite and diorite.

l Directly south of the Dobie Batholith occurs a 300 to 800 m thick

body of hornblende gabbro that contains numerous slices, wedges,

l blocks and xenoliths of highly altered, generally sheared mafic

metavolcanic rocks. The contact between the batholith and the

* gabbro body is undulatory and strikes roughly 115 to 1300 Az. A

•j narrow, 25-50 m thick, sliver of mafic metavolcanic rocks is wedged

between the diorites and the gabbros in the central portion of the

l grid. The margins of the gabbro tend to be fine-grained and

sheared, whereas the internal regions are medium to very coarse-

I grained and massive. The southern contact of the gabbro is

m undulatory and usually strikes between 105 and 1206 Az. Much of the

southern 30 to 40% of the grid is underlain by variably deformed

l and sheared, usually pillowed, mafic metavolcanic flows. There is

a relatively narrow gabbro body present in the southwestern part

l bf the grid. This body appears to be surrounded by mafic

m metavolcanics and may be two cross-cutting dykes rather than one

bifurcating body. It ranges from 75-200 m in thickness, and

l l

Page 32: RPT ON GEOL MAPPING PROG OF THE COOPER W GRID …...1989; Bond Gold Canada Inc. completed ground EM and l magnetometer surveys on the Meen Lake Grid; and IP- EM surveys on the Cooper

ll ^apparently thickens to the west, where it may eventually join up

with the larger gabbro intrusion discussed previously.

l— The most abundant rock-type observed during the mapping

™ program was hornblende gabbro. This rock-type is mottled in

M appearance, light green to dark green in colour, massive to vari-

l l

textured to locally sheared, and composed of 20 to 1 Q\ greyish to

I slightly greenish, subhedral to euhedral plagioclase feldspar, 30

- to 80% altered, dark green, subhedral hornblende, and trace, to

B locally 11, disseminated pyrrhotite, and minor chalcopyrite. The

•j plagioclase is commonly saussuritized and the wide variation in

content causes the rock to range from leucogabbro to melagabbro in

l composition. The hornblende is rarely preserved and has altered

to dark green actinolite and chlorite. Locally the chlorite has

B further altered to biotite. Shearing quickly destroys the mafic

m minerals and forms pressure shadows around the plagioclase

crystals. Intense shearing can give the rock a well-foliated,

l locally banded appearance and dramatically decreases grain-size.

Narrow, highly deformed,, greyish quartz stringers and veinlets, of

l limited extent, occur locally where the gabbros are sheared.

•j Shearing tends to be focused along the margins of the gabbro bodies

or where dykes cross-cut the intrusions.

lThe next most abundant rock-type are the pillowed locally

l massive, mafic metavolcanic flows. These rocks are green to dark

m green, weakly to moderately, locally intensely sheared, chloritic,

weakly to moderately carbonatized, and locally epidote-rich.

Page 33: RPT ON GEOL MAPPING PROG OF THE COOPER W GRID …...1989; Bond Gold Canada Inc. completed ground EM and l magnetometer surveys on the Meen Lake Grid; and IP- EM surveys on the Cooper

ll p'illows tend to be stretched and deformed, and with increased

shearing tend to form a rock with a well-banded appearance.

J Numerous, narrow, highly boudinaged, generally disrupted, white to

grey-coloured quartz veins, containing trace to 2% disseminated

B pyrite, occur where the pillows are most sheared.

lThe last of the major rock-types in abundance are the

l tonalites and diorites. These two rock varieties occur in close

~ proximity to, and are gradational with, each other. They are light

m buff-grey to cream in colour, locally hematite-stained, massive to

m moderately sheared, locally highly sheared, and occasionally

feldspar porphyritic. Both contain 40-50* subhedral locally

l euhedral, cream-coloured plagioclase, 2 0-40* fibrous amphibole,

(actinolite), chlorite, biotite, and variable quantities of quartz.

m The tonalites and diorites are almost identical in appearance,

except that the tonalites contain 20-30* interstitial quartz, and

l the diorites contain trace to 201 quartz. The diorites do not

resemble the hornblende gabbros in any way, and do not appear to

l be genetically related to one another.

Minor quantities of sheared, felsic to intermediate, quartz

l or feldspar porphyry dykes occur in all rock-types. Narrow,

irregular dykes and veinlets of diorite and tonalite cross-cut

l rocks near the contact with the Dobie Batholith. Rarely

M plagiophyric, or hornblende-phyric, mafic dykes are observed.

REPORT ON THE1990 GEOLOGICAL MAPPING PROGRAM

MEEN LAKE GRID

INTRODUCTION

A geologic napping and prospecting program was completed on the Meen Lake Grid portion of the Muskeg West Property between August 7 and 14, 1989, and between June 5 and August 4, 1990. A total of 288 line kilometres were mapped at a scale of 1:5000 and 377 rock samples were collected and fire assayed for gold. Mapping was performed on a cut line grid spaced at 100 metre intervals, oriented at 30" azimuth. Mapping was assisted by M. Trudzik, M. Rosatelli, and F. Longpre, under direct supervision of the author.

No values of economic interest were encountered, although 10 samples yielded anomalous values between 0.01 and 0.06 02 Au/ton. In addition, several interesting structures and geological environments were examined that may hold potential for gold and base metal mineralization.

PROPERTY LOCATION AND ACCESS

The Meen Lake Grid is cut over the western 40% of the Muskeg West claim group. It is located in northwestern Ontario about 380 km northwest of Thunder Bay, 80 km west of Pickle Lake, and 15 km northwest of Bond Gold Canada Inc.'s Golden Patricia Mine (Maps l S 2). The Muskeg West Group consists of 520 contiguous claims that are directly adjacent to the Golden Patricia Mine Lease (Maps 2 and 3).

Access to the grid is by float or ski-equipped fixed-wing aircraft, or helicopter, from Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout or Red Lake. Drill roads and cut trails allow access to all parts of the property in winter by snowmobile from the Golden Patricia Minesite.

TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION

The Meen Lake Grid covers a considerable area and exhibits a wide range of terrain and vegetation types. The eastern and southeastern areas are comprised chiefly of deep, hummocky, locally kettled, glacial moraine forested with a mature growth of jackpine, black spruce and occasionally stands of trembling aspen. The areas south of Meen Lake tend to be low, flat to gently rolling, swampy, and treed by black spruce, tamarack and alder. The northern and central regions are characterized by bedrock-cored ridges and hills, exhibiting up to 20 m relief and the occasional low cliff. The ridges are treed with trembling aspen, black spruce and jackpine, while the intervening swamps are covered with black

REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The Meen Lake Grid is located at the northwestern end of the Meen-Dempster Greenstone Belt, that occurs within the Archean-age Uchi Subprovince of the Superior Structural Province. The belt is 95 km long, 6 to 10 km wide, and forms part of an irregular cluster of linear to arcuate volcanic belts situated at the margins of late-stage, diapiric, felsic batholiths. It is bounded on the south by the Carling Granite, the Obaskaka Lake Pluton, and the Southern Pluton; on the north by the Dobie Lake Batholith; and on the west and northwest by the Hammerton Lake Pluton.

The supracrustal rocks of the Meen Lake area are subdivided into the Upper and Lower Meen Lake Group, and the Dorothy Lake Group. The Lower Meen Lake Group, the oldest cycle, consists of massive to pillowed, tholeiitic flows, interbedded with oxide facies iron formations, and small volumes of felsic to intermediate flows and tuffs. The Upper Meen Lake Group is composed of predominantly intermediate to felsic pyroclastics and subordinate flows. The Dorothy Lake Group, which occupies a synclinal portion of the greenstone belt, is chiefly composed of metasedimentaxy rocks, such as wackes, arenites, conglomerates, and reworked pyroclastics, with minor, interbedded, mafic and felsic tuffs, and mafic to intermediate flows.

Metamorphism within the belt is generally upper greenschist facies, but locally reaches mid-amphibolite facies near the surrounding plutons and batholiths.

Stratigraphic units are thought to be recumbently folded about an east-southeasterly to southeasterly synclinal axis that occurs near the centre of the belt. The complete sequence has been overturned, with foliation and bedding dipping steeply, to subvertically north, but younging to the south.

The northern contact of the belt, defined by the Dobie Lake Batholith, focuses a major, dextral, shear/deformation zone known as the Bearhead Fault Zone (Osmani and Stott, 1988) . It is suggested that a splay from this zone hosts the gold-bearing vein at the Golden Patricia Mine, but the relationships between the two structures are still unclear. Another possibility may be that movement along the Bearhead Fault Zone reactivated an older structure within which the gold was concentrated. Another possible splay, or subparallel reactivated structure may be responsible for Umex's Dorothy Lake gold zone.

Go,ld Mineralization occurs in several geologic environments within the Meen-Dempster Belt. The most significant is Bond Gold Canada Inc. 's Golden Patricia Deposit, cpntaining reserves of about 446,000 tons at 0.61 oz Au/ton, where visible gold occurs within a narrow, laterally very extensive, shear zone hosted, cherty- appearing quartz vein. Two other significant deposits are Bond Gold Canada Inc.'s Dobie Zone, containing approximately 300,000 tons at 0.16 oz Au/ton; and LAC Minerals' Bancroft Lake Deposit containing about 149,000 tons at 0.19 oz Au/ton. These two deposits are associated with sheared, silicified and sulphidized zones in close association with iron formations. A fourth, possibly significant, gold deposit was recently discovered by Umex Corp. on their Dorothy Lake Property, where gold occurs within a sheared, highly altered and mineralized diorite.

PROPERTY GEOLOGY

The Meen Lake Grid covers two cycles of volcanic rocks: the dominantly mafic Lower Meen Lake Group and the dominantly intermediate to felsic Upper Meen Lake Group. - The grid also covers the boundaries of two peripheral plutonic complexes, the Dobie Lake Batholith to the north and the Hammerton Lake Pluton to the southwest). The rock types encountered on the property are described below:

i) Mafic Metavolcanic Rocks:

The mafic metavolcanic rocks of the Lower Meen Lake Group are well exposed and form the bulk of the outcrop on the Meen Lake property. These rocks extend across the central part of the property north of Meen Lake in a fairly continuous band up to 1.5 km wide. Both massive and pillowed flows are observed. The massive volcanics are generally fine-grained and dark greyish-green to dark green in colour. The typical mineral assemblage is amphibole-plagioclase-chlorite, locally with accessory biotite and calcite. The rocks are variably foliated and locally sheared. Rusty, oxidized foliation planes are common, although sulphides generally occur in only trace amounts. Coarse-grained varieties occur locally and represent the central sections of thick flows.

Pillowed mafic flows are similar in colour and composition to the massive flows but differ due to the presence of distinct dark grey to green pillow selvedges. These selvedges are typically straight to gently curvilinear in form and 1-3 cm in width. Deformation has structured the pillows into ovoid shapes with length to width ratios from 2:1 to 6:1. Saussuritization of pillow selvedges and pillow cores is very common (light green to yellow- green in colour) and likely reflects deuteric alteration. Interpillow material is occasionally observed, typically composed of very rusty, recrystallized, saccharoidal chert which may be magnetiferous. The pillowed flows are typically too deformed to

ailow for reliable top determinations. There are, however, rare occurrences of weakly deformed pillows and amygdaloidal pillows which indicate that tops are dominantly south facing.

Pillow breccias occur sporadically throughout the mafic pile. These are typically clast supported, monolithic breccias composed of subangular fragments (generally ^20 cm in thickness) that exhibit portions of pillow selvedges. The matrix is a fine grained, strongly saussuritized material. There are also minor occurrences of mafic volcanic breccias with no obvious selvedge fragments that may represent flow top breccias.

The mafic volcanics are variably foliated and locally strongly sheared, creating chloritic schists. Shearing of pillowed flows and pillow breccias likely gives rise to the banded mafic flows that occur near the margins of the supracrustal sequence and within rafted segments of volcanics within the Dobie Lake Batholith. The banded flows are composed of narrow, discontinuous, alternating bands of amphibole-rich and epidote-rich material, best observed on weathered surfaces.

ii) Intermediate to Felsic Metavolcanic Rocks:

Intermediate and minor felsic metavolcanics belonging to the Upper Meen Lake Group are interpreted to underlie most of the south property area. These rocks are poorly exposed due to the presence of thick glacial deposits which cover much of the property south of Meen Lake. Lapilli and ash-tuffs and pyroclastic breccias of intermediate composition are the most commonly exposed rocks in this area. The ash-tuffs are typically light greyish-green to grey in colour, fine to medium-grained, and well foliated. The typical mineral assemblage is plagioclase-chlorite-quartz-sericite + biotite. Lapilli tuffs are commonly heterolithic and usually display a strongly, pitted, greyish to buff-coloured weathered surface.

Coarse pyroclastic rocks are exposed immediately south of the Meen Lake narrows. Pyroclastic breccias in this area typically display a light green chloritic matrix with subrounded to angular fragments that are usually more felsic than the matrix. Bombs and fragments up to l m in diameter were observed.

Exposures of felsic metavolcanic rocks are limited. The principle occurrence is a 100-300 m thick, east-west trending band of sporadic outcrop immediately north of Tie Line 20+OOS between lines 265+00 w and 274+00 W. Here, massive to weakly foliated flows and lapilli tuffs are intercalated with intermediate volcanics and gabbroic intrusives. The flows display a distinctive buff coloured, polished, weathered surface and a blocky fracture pattern. They are typically composed of a fine-grained assemblage of quartz-plagioclase-sericite and may contain quartz phenocrysts.

-6-

The presence of rhyolitic flows, coarse pyroclastic rocks, and subvolcanic intrusives (quartz ± feldspar porphyries) which occur stratigraphically above and below the intermediate-felsic package, are all evidence for a volcanic centre within or proximal to the south property area.

iii) Chemical and Clastic Metasedimentary Rocks:

Chemical sediments occur as discontinuous bands of varying thicknesses, interlayered with mafic metavolcanics of the Lower Meen Lake Group in the central property area. Chert-magnetite iron formation occurs in bands usually less than a metre wide, although locally they can attain widths of up to six metres (eg. Line 270+00 W, 5+30 N). The iron formation units are usually interbedded with chlorite-biotite schists or dark grey mudstones. They often contain minor sulphide mineralization (locally up to 5%, mostly pyrite) and are rarely garnetiferous. Lean iron formation and chert occurs rarely in thin bands and also as an interpillow material.

Clastic sedimentary rocks are of very limited occurrence on the property. Outside of the fine-grained sediments associated with iron formation, the only other clastic sediments observed were narrow, discontinuous bands of interflow wackes and siltstones.

iv) Subvolcanic Intrusive Rocks:

Gabbroic sills of varying size are common on the Meen Lake property. The most extensive exposures occur within the Lower Meen Lake Group, extending westward from "Pitu" Lake to an area immediately north of the Meen Lake narrows. Smaller sills intrude the Upper Meen Lake Group and are likely westward extensions of a large gabbro body situated along the south shore of Cooper Lake. The gabbros are composed of varying amounts of hornblende and plagioclase, occasionally with accessory magnetite and chlorite. They are typically massive but are locally sheared and strongly chloritized. A strongly porphyritic gabbro with plagioclase phenocrysts up to several centimetres wide was also observed in one outcrop.

Quartz-feldspar porphyries occur sporadically on the property, although locally dykes can be traced for distances of up to 200 metres. The majority of the porphyry outcrops occur within the Lower Meen Lake Group, in close proximity to the contact with the Upper Meen Lake Group. The porphyries typically display a medium to dark grey, fine-grained siliceous matrix surrounding varying amounts of yellowish to white feldspar and pale blue to colourless quartz phenocrysts, best recognized on weathered surfaces.

Minor, fine-grained, mafic to intermediate dykes and possible lamprophyre dykes also occur on the property, mainly within the Lower Meen Lake Group metavolcanics.

v) Felsic to Intermediate Intrusive Rocks:

The northern portions of the Meen Lake Grid are underlain by the marginally complex, felsic to intermediate intrusive rocks of the pretectonic to syntectonic Dobie Lake Batholith. This is essentially a granodioritic to tonalitic body, with diorite common along the margins of the batholith. Contacts between the different phases are gradational, often making classification of the granitoid rocks in the north property area difficult.

The late to post-tectonic Hammerton Lake Pluton intrudes the southwest portion of the grid. This consists predominantly of massive, potassium feldspar and/or guartz-porphyritic granodiorite. In the Meen Lake area the rock contains abundant biotite. Various lobes of this intrusion pinch and eventually truncate within the mafic metavolcanic rocks of the Lower Meen Lake Group northwest of Meen Lake.

STRUCTURE

The overall trend of the supracrustal rocks on the property varies from west-northwest to east-west, or subparallel to the granite-greenstone contacts. The metavolcanic rocks are folded around a major syncline that is coaxial with the Upper Meen Lake Group. The synclinal axis is slightly curved, strikes between 090" and 1350 , plunges 2 5-50" east and southeast, and is generally parallel to mineral stretching and intersection lineations. The rocks north of Meen Lake dip subvertically to steeply south, while south of the lake dips are moderate to steep to the north. The northern contact of the metavolcanic rocks with the Dobie Batholith is marked by the trace of the Bearhead Fault Zone, which is usually located within the granitoid rocks but occasionally curves into the metavolcanic rocks. The numerous shear zones observed within the metavolcanics are possibly splays, subparallel systems, or reactivated older structures associated with the Bearhead Fault Zone. Many of the subsidiary shears are located along lithologic contacts exhibiting some sort of competency contrast.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

A total of 288 line km of geological mapping and prospecting was completed on the Meen Lake property at a scale of 1:5000. Mapping has outlined two cycles of east-west trending metavolcanic rocks and the boundaries of two surrounding granitic plutons.

The main focus of sampling included quartz -f- carbonate veins, sheared and altered zones, iron formation, and gossanous, iron- stained horizons. A total of 377 grab and chip samples were obtained and fire assayed for gold by Paul's Custom Fire Assay Ltd. in Red Lake, Ontario. No gold values of economic significance were

encountered, although ten samples returned weakly anomolous values (X).01 oz Au/ton) (The ten anomolous samples are described in Table I). The highest value obtained was a 0.06 oz Au/ton from a weakly sheared quartz-feldspar porphyry- dyke crosscutting mafic flows. The dyke contains thin quartz veinlets and trace to i.% disseminated pyrite. Resampling of this feature yielded a value of 0.03 oz Au/ton. However, sampling of other rocks along strike and in the immediate vicinity yielded no economic values. The remaining anomolous values are associated with disseminated sulphides (mainly pyrite and pyrrhotite) in various lithologies and also with small, rusty quartz veins which are very common on the property, particularly north of Meen Lake.

The Bearhead Fault Zone was recognized in the north property area, manifested by a series of strongly sheared to mylonitized granitoid rocks in close proximity to the granite/greenstone contact. Alteration and sulphide mineralization in these rocks is minimal. In the metavolcanics of the Meen Lake Group several small shear zones, possibly associated with the Bearhead Fault Zone, were mapped and sampled. These shears are often carbonatized and/or silicified and occasionally host large quartz ± carbonate ± tourmaline veins. Sulphide mineralization, however, is generally weak and sampling of these zones did not return significant gold values.

The seventeen hple 1989 drill program tested several of the stronger geophysical anomolies on the property, but did not intersect any significant zones of gold mineralization. The majority of the EM conductors that were drilled proved to be associated with bands of variably sulphidized, sheared and deformed oxide facies iron formation, interbedded with pillowed mafic flows. Minor values (up to 0.02 oz Au/ton) were returned from the iron formation horizons, however, there is no readily apparent correlation between sulphide content, the presence of quartz * carbonate veinlets, and the occasional anomolous assay result. Subsequent sampling of numerous iron formation outcrops in the present program returned two anomolous gold values from widely separate locations (see Table I). None of the surface values obtained in the mapping program appear to correspond to anomolous zones intersected in the drill program.

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The geologic mapping and prospecting program carried out on the Meen Lake Grid portion of the Muskeg West property did not uncover any significant zones of gold mineralization. A variety of features of potential economic interest were sampled, including quartz veins, shear zones, iron formations, and disseminated sulphide zones. Of the 377 samples collected, only 10 returned anomolous values between 0.01 and 0.06 oz Au/ton.

The highest value of 0.06 oz Au/ton was obtained from a weakly sheared and mineralized quartz-feldspar porphyry dyke crosscutting mafic flows. It is recommened that this zone be stripped and sampled thoroughly. In addition, more prospecting should be performed over the entire peninsula on the west side of "Pitu" Lake where the showing is situated. This area is covered by thick vegetation and it is quite likely that a significant amount of outcrop can be uncovered between grid lines.

In the south property area, the presence of coarse pyroclastic rocks, rhyolitic flows and subvolcanic quartz-feldspar porphyries suggest the existence of a volcanic centre within or proximal to this area. An effort should be made to assess the potential for gold and base metal mineralization within these rocks. This would include additional prospecting and stripping south of Meen Lake and limited, widely spaced I.P. profiling over selected areas within the Upper Meen Lake Group. I.P.. profiling should also be performed over the contact between the Upper and Lower Meen Lake Groups, which is largely covered by water. The contact between these two volcanic cycles is a potential site for gold and base metal mineralization. Follow-up diamond drilling to test any new geophysical/geological targets in this area is also recommended.
