About the SeriesIn this season filled with music, the Hark the Glad Sound weekly Advent series for traditional worship focuses on the biblical songs of God’s people as they awaited the Savior. Each week in the series written by Rev. Vern Gundermann, parishioners will learn about a song from Scripture that highlights an Advent activity that will prepare us for Christ’s coming among us as a baby in Bethlehem. Hymns in the series include “On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist Cry,” “Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord,” “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” and “The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns.”

• Week 1: The Song of Zechariah (Luke 1:67-79): Zechariah’s Song revealed that his newborn son will be a prophet, sent to prepare the way of the Lord, and the song serves as a melody of repentance for us.

• Week 2: The Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55): Mary’s Song declares that the Lord has remembered his covenant with us through his Son, making this a melody of remembrance.

• Week 3: The Song of the Angels (Luke 2:8-14): The Song of the Angels announced with great joy the Good News of Christ’s birth, and echoes through our lives today as a melody of rejoicing.

• Week 4: The Song of the Church (Isaiah 52:7-10): The Song of the Church carries the angels’ message of peace, good will to all, to all the world, and resounds as a melody of reconciliation, bringing us into harmony with Christ and one another.

Complete Script For Worship Leaders

• The Opening Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Chesterfield CM:

Hark the glad sound! The Savior comes, the Savior promised long; Let ev’ry heart prepare a throne and ev’ry voice a song.

Come, magnify his holy name, the God of Abraham; For as a sacrifice for sin, the Lord provides the Lamb.

The mighty crushed, the proud brought low, the humble lifted up; The hungry by his Body fed, his Blood, their precious cup.

All glory to the Father give, with glory to the Son, And glory to the Spirit sing, th’eternal Three in One!

• The Litany is spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation:

P O God, we love Mary’s melody of remembrance—

C recalling God’s gracious covenant promises to Abraham and his seed forever.

P Her voice is joyful as she remembers how magnificent God is to her;

C our voices also express our wonder at his goodness.

P God will lift her up, and she is overwhelmed with joy. We join her in her words of praise:

C “My soul now magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”

• The Lighting of the Advent Wreath is spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation:

P Let us light two candles. The first candle is the candle of repentance.

C The second is the candle of remembrance, for we know how much we have forgotten.

(The first and second candles of the Advent Wreath are lit at this time.)

P With one voice we join Mary’s song, remembering:

P “His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.”

• The Confession and Absolution is read responsively by the pastor and the congregation:

P Mary was aware of her “humble estate.” She knew she was unworthy of the Lord’s gift to her. Our awareness is no different. We remember our “humble estate.” In our day we often use these words to express our unworthiness:

C Almighty God, I confess to you all of the sins by which I have offended you. I deserve to suffer for my sins, both now and in eternity. I am sorry for my sins, and I pray that you will look on me in mercy and forgive me for the sake of Jesus my Savior, who suffered the punishment for my sins when he died on the cross.

P Mary remembered the mercy of the God for Abraham and for his seed forever. We too remember the tender mercy of our God as his covenant people. So with confidence I announce unto you that your sins are forgiven, in the name of the Father and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

C With Mary we remember and say: “He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

• A Hymn of Praise is sung by the congregation to the tune Nunn Komm, Der Heiden Heiland 77 77:

Let the earth now praise the Lord, who hath truly kept his Word And the sinners’ Help and Friend now at last to us doth send.

What the fathers most desired, what the prophet’s heart inspired, What they longed for many a year, stands fulfilled in glory here.

Abram’s promised great Reward, Zion’s Helper, Jacob’s Lord, Him of twofold race behold, truly came, as long foretold.

• The Prayer of the Day is read by the pastor:

P O Heavenly Father, we praise you for the melody of remembrance that is Mary’s song. We praise you even more for the Son she would bear, who is for us and for all people the Savior of the world. Grant that we too may worship and adore him, and carry the message of your Son, our Lord, to all people. Amen.

• The Children’s Sermon is delivered by the pastor or other worship leader:

Needed: Large sign that says, “Yes!”; Take-Away Lesson for the Home for Week 2 (see pp. 55-56.)

P (As children are seated, begin humming “Jesus Loves Me.”) Hello, boys and girls. If you know that song I was just humming, raise your hand. (Wait for children to raise their hands.) What is the name of the song? (Let children respond.) How do you know that song? (Let children respond.)

Someone somewhere taught that song to you. Do you think you will remember that song next week? (Hold up “Yes!” sign once a child has said yes.) Do you think you will remember that song next year? (Hold up “Yes!” sign once a child has said yes.) Do you think you will remember that song when you are as old as moms and dads? (Hold up “Yes!” sign once a child has said yes.)

To parents: Moms and Dads, do you remember the song? (Hold up “Yes!” sign.)

To children: Do you think you will remember the song when you are as old as grandmas and grandpas? (Hold up “Yes!” sign once a child has said yes.)

To grandparents: Grandmas and grandpas, do you remember that song? (Hold up “Yes!” sign.)

Things we learn when we are little, and which are said over and over again as we grow bigger, we remember for a very, very long time. Today we are learning from the Bible about a young woman named Mary. Mary knew about God’s love for her and all people. Girls didn’t go to school when Mary was growing up, but someone, maybe her mom, dad, aunts, uncles, or grandmas and grandpas taught Mary about all the wonderful things God has done. She knew about God’s love and his promise to send his Son, Jesus, to be our Savior.

YES! (Raise the “Yes!” sign. Then sing the following words to the first two lines of the tune of “Jesus Loves Me.”) God loved Mary, this she knew. God had things for her to do! (Sing again, asking the children to sing the words with you.)

Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. When an angel came to tell her this amazing news, she didn’t seem surprised. She remembered God’s promise to send his Son, the Savior for all people. Mary believed! Thankful Mary sang a song of praise for all the marvelous things God had done.

YES! (Raise the “Yes!” sign. Then sing the following words to the first two lines of the tune of “Jesus Loves Me.”) Jesus loves both me and you! He has things for us to do! (Sing again, asking the children to sing the words with you.)

Each one of us is loved by God. He sent his Son, Jesus, to be our Savior. Like Mary, each of us has been chosen by God to do his work. God will help us!

Let’s sing the regular words of “Jesus Loves Me” all together, both children and the congregation, and each time we sing the word “Yes!” I will hold up this sign to remind us of how Mary said, “Yes!” to God’s plan for her. (Sing the words of “Jesus Loves Me,” printed below, raising the “Yes!” sign every time the word “Yes!” is sung.)

Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so; Little ones to him belong; They are weak, but he is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died Heaven’s gate to open wide; He will wash away my sin, Let his little child come in. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Thank you for joining me today, boys and girls, to hear about Mary and her song. Here is a handout to take with you to remember what we talked about today. (Hand out Take-Away for the Home for Week 2 sheets on pp. 55-56.) You can go back to your seats now.

• The Old Testament Reading, Genesis 12:1-3, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader:

P Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

• The Epistle Reading, Galatians 3:23-29, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader:

P Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

• The Gospel Reading, Luke 1:46-55, is spoken by the pastor or other worship leader:

P And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me,and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to

generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

• The Sermon Hymn is sung by the congregation to the tune Gabriel’s Message 10 10 11 7 3:

The angel Gabriel from heaven came, with wings as drifted snow, with eyes as flame: “All hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary, most highly favored lady.” Gloria!

“For know a blessed mother thou shalt be; all generations laud and honor thee; Thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, most highly favored lady.” Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head; “To me be as it pleaseth God,” she said. “My soul shall laud and magnify God’s holy name.” Most highly favored lady, Gloria!

Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn, And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say: Most highly favored lady. Gloria!

• The Sermon is delivered by the pastor:

P In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

I wonder who taught Mary what she remembered?

So far as we know, she was pretty young, surely in her teens, when the angel came and announced that she was to be the mother of Jesus. While she was surprised at the angel’s presence and the angel’s greeting, she does not seem all that surprised with the angel’s message. Oh, she does have questions about how that pregnancy would happen. She is engaged, but she is not yet married.

But the message that the Savior of the world was coming does not seem to faze her. Who told her that the Messiah would come? Was it her mother who hummed that melody while she was yet in her mother’s womb? Was it her mother and father who sang the songs of the fathers? It was not the custom of the times for a Rabbi to teach girls, but maybe she heard her male cousins shout out the great promises made to their ancestor Abraham. Or was it her fiancé, Joseph, who, while sharing plans for their life together, also shared the hopes and dreams that they might live when the Promised One came?

Someone shared the melody with her. And that melody was reinforced when the angel told her that her relative Elizabeth was also expecting. Mary must have known

Creativ

DS1 47

her. She knew she was old. But the angel assured her that with God, “nothing is impossible.” Elizabeth undoubtedly reinforced her melody!

At the core of the faith held so highly by the Jewish people was the covenant relationship that God had with Abraham. Mary knew about that covenant. While she might have known there were different kinds of covenants, this one was about an agreement of non-equals. Mary knew God’s commitment in this covenant with Abraham. She knew that:

• This God would be a loving, caring, forgiving, renewing and empowering God

• He would always have a place for Abraham, the Promised Land

• He would always have a people for Abraham, as numerous as the sands on the shore and the stars in the sky

• He would release blessings through Abraham by which all people would be blessed.

Mary’s melody of remembrance could recall the many times God had been faithful to his covenant promise. She would know the experiences of the people of God, when the proud had been scattered and the mighty brought down. She knew the stories of her people when the hungry had been filled, and the rich sent away empty.

Now she would become the mother of the one who would be “holy—the Son of God!”

She has passed that melody of remembrance on to us! We have had good and faithful people hum and sing it into our lives. We know the melody well! It makes all the different in the world to us.

With regret, we acknowledge that sometimes we have muffled the tune. Sometimes we have not sounded it at all. We have denied it to those who might be open to hearing it. We have not hummed it to those in our womb, to our cousins, to those with whom we have a committed relationship.

We have our excuses, as sorry as they may be. The glorious truth is that we have this wonderful covenant relationship with the one born to Mary, this Holy One, this Son of God! He is for us what he was for Mary, for all those before her, and all those who follow her. He is the one who is for us such a loving Lord, who has a place for us in his heart until he receives us in the Promised Land. He has for us people who rejoice with us, who grieve with us, who pray for us. He wishes even more to bless many through us!

Mary’s song—a melody of remembrance. How wonderful that it is also our song—our melody of remembrance!

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.
