Hi, my name is Lolita Jones. I wasborn and raised in Tuscaloosa,Alabama. It's a nice quiet town. I loveto travel andcook.

My fatherwas in theU.S. Armyso my fami-ly traveled alot, usuallynot being inone placelonger thanthree yearsat a time. After my father retired from the army,he and my mother came to Californiato start a new chapter in their lives. Alltogether it took my father about threeyears before he could send for mybrothers, sisters and me. But the timeapart from our parents made us all thatmuch closer and loving family.

Years passed and then I decided toenlist in the USMC in which I servedfour years. I had my first daughter,Yvette, while I was stationed inGermany. She was born premature andis now going to school to become anurse. Yvette wants to give anotherfamily what her nurses and doctorshad given me when she was born – alittle miracle. Later we added anothermember to our family. Her name isTatyanne. She loves to dance and sing, and her favorite TV show is “HannahMontana”. One thing is for sure, theyboth keep me very busy!

I am a Customer Service representa-tive here at RPI. I love to work hereand one of the reasons why is its loyal-ty to its employees and customers. Ibelieve that loyalty is what it takes toreach for success and to make a differ-ence. In turn, I have passed this on toour customers letting them know thatI’m always here to help them and togive excellent service and even attimes put a smile on their faces. Iwould like to thank RPI for giving methe opportunity to join their family.

THE RPI FAMILY

Thanks to Customers who took a chance on RPI

In our previous issue of TheAlternate Source, we celebrated our 35th anniversary, retelling the story of how RPI came into existence. It’s a good story, and one worthretelling, especially to new employees togive them a feel for the company. It is kindof a tribal story, as some managementgurus would call it, and the story of ourbeginning, as well as many other storiesthroughout the years, help to make up thefabric of our company culture. I am surethat your business has similar stories aboutpeople and events that are a part of yourcompany culture as well.

In the retelling of that story in our newslet-ter, we mentioned one very important ele-ment on which I would like to elaborate. That element of the story is those earlycustomers who took a chance on anunknown company named RPI makingaftermarket parts for the equipment thatthey supported.

When a new, unknown company advertis-es for your business, essentially askingyou to take a chance on them, it takessome nerve (or perhaps desperation!) tobuy from them for the first time, especial-ly if you are relying on the quality of theirproduct to satisfy your own customers. But that is exactly what a number of ourearly customers did – they took a chanceon us. And because of that, these folksdeserve a great deal of credit for helpingus to survive the early years, and to growinto the business that we are today.

This brings up one of the keys to our suc-cess, and what makes many businessessuccessful. Meet a basic need, and do it consistently so that people can rely on you.Do not overpromise. RPI does not promise the moon, or every part under the sun. What we do promise, and what we have promised, and I think have accomplished

This year will mark RPI’s seventhconsecutive year exhibiting at theFlorida International MedicalExposition (FIME). With more than3,600 suppliers from all over the globeshowing goods, discussing businessdeals and taking advantage of one-on-one opportunities to meet with eachother – this is one industry event thatDora Aguirre, manager of theCustomer Service Department at RPI,and I always look forward to each year. But II especially look forward to thisExpo, not just because my “off hours”are spent walking along the SouthBeach boardwalk. Oh no! Or becauseof the wonderful Cuban food sautéedin Chimmichura sauce that accompa-nies a must-have ice cold Hatuey beerat the Lincoln Café. No influencethere. And the immaculately groomedbeaches lined with lounge chairs andtanned bodies pampered by Cabana-side servers, is not why I make suchsacrifices for RPI. And no, not eventhose great shops and restaurantsoffering everything from Art Deco anddiamonds to penne paste and sushi, entered my mind. Such sacrifices aremade solely in the interest of promot-ing good welfare with people wemight never have had the opportunityto meet and offer our thanks for theirsupport. Maybe next year I’ll have theopportunity to meet you. I’ll be morethan happy to offer my expertise on“sacrificing” your time in SouthBeach, Miami. Hope to see you there.

It is important to remember that ittakes a well-lubed cassette to help theprocess of installing the seal, as well assome patience and fine manipulationof the seal into the groove. And propermaintenance of the cassette and seal isalso important, so education of yourcustomer is critical.

Got Questions About the Auto Float Drain?

By Jim WisniewskiManager RPI Product Development

By Phil Goldstein, RPI Product Development

As many of you know, the cassetteseals to fit the SciCan Statim 2000 and5000 sterilizers are the most unusuallyshaped seals that you work with forany sterilizer. This is due tothe unique nature of thecassette, its grooves, and its sealingrequirements. This allmakes installation of theseal quite challenging.

What makes it even more challengingis that dings and warping of the cas-sette can cause the seal to have a diffi-cult time seating. Additionally, steamleaks in these machines are not always

Save A Stamp –Ask For Auto-Pay

Our Auto Float Drain (RPI Part #CMF016) that fits theCoalescing Filter Assemblies (RPI Part #'s CMA021 andCMA022) on some dental compressors has been upgraded by themanufacturer. In an effort to improve the part, our manufacturerremoved the threaded mounting stem to accommodate a QuickDisconnect Adapter Fitting over the drain end that would allow fordifferent types of tubing to be connected. This change also allowsthe service technician to be able to remove the bowl a bit easier ifit becomes full and needs to be taken to a sink and drained. Therewas just one catch, we know that not too many of you carry thatparticular fitting as part of your normal "van stock". So to make iteasier, we include a Quick Disconnect Adapter Fitting (RPI Part#RPF651) with the Auto Float Drain. Thanks for your feedback!

Replacement Parts Industries, Inc.

The more that time goes on, the more memories I find. They must be sneaking up on me, because I don’t rememberthat events and happenings would become memories. I knowI’m not growing older so all of these things must be happen-ing in micro-seconds. There are two types of memories thatcome from RPI. They are internal and external. The lattersometimes astound me, but always make me feel warm likemaybe we’ve been of some real use in our crazy world.

What started this reflection was a letter (not an e-mail or fax)from John Easter of Easter Scientific in Davenport, IA.,thanking us for all the years of good service (he’s been a cus-tomer since 1983). Over the years we’ve received many of thesame comments and letters from you (I believe we may havegotten one negative comment, but I must be mistaken aboutthat). These letters and comments have always reinforced mystrong belief in Peter Drucker’s (he was the greatest manage-ment guru of the 20th Century) reasoning for starting a busi-ness: you start a business to fulfill a need. If you fulfill thatneed, you will be successful. It seems that we are doing justthat, fulfilling your need.

It almost seems like we are collaborating with you. We start-ed with just 19 parts, and you said that’s not enough. So webrought out more, and again you said that wasn’t enough. This has been a wonderful cycle we’re going through withyou, and as a result, we now have an inventory of about 2500parts. And more are coming. This year alone we’ll bring outmore than 100 parts, all of which you’ve asked for at one timeor another. Our long range plan is to keep this cycle going onindefinitely. That way, we both benefit.

Thank you all for being such wonderful customers. Thankyou for being an integral part of our continued growth. Andthank you in advance for being a part of our future

The results of their efforts can be seen in how you do youreveryday job. But a finite example is the magazine 24x7.When this magazine first appeared it was printed onnewsprint. While the substance of the contents was of highquality, the layout wasn’t. It and its founder, Jack Spears,

Because of the nature of our business, we have not had theopportunity to meet most of our customers in person, muchto our regret. We have met some at meetings and tried tomeet more on our travels. It’s always fun to put names, facesand voices together when we finally do meet.

Most of our contact with you is by phone, fax or email.Occasionally you will contact us when things have not goneright. But the most gratifying notes have been when you havetold us we’ve done something well. We keep a folder marked“Kudos From Our Customers” for those. We’ve quoted someof them in our newsletter over the years, but I thought itmight be fun to let you know about some others we havereceived. In the interest of saving space (time, effort, paper, trees, etc.) I’m leaving off the names and companies.

One of my all-time favorites is: “Thank you for your promptshipment. Here is my prompt check.”

“I can’t tell you how many times you guys have saved my a--with your parts and service.”

“Thank you for your continued patience and understandingof the small business person.”

“Your friendship and business has been a great help to us.”

turn of the door closing device hasbeen reached, two things will happen:1) you will hear the door switch"click"; and, 2) you will see the Heat-On light go on (which means that theheaters have been activated).

33)) The Door Switch (RPI Part #TUS014) also can be adjusted to acti-vate the heaters by adjusting the posi-tioning of the rear inside panel nut, bringing the switch closer to or fartheraway from the activator. This would benecessary only if the sterilizer does notcome equipped with the spring loadedactivator ver.3.

44)) Use of the Rubber Boot (RPI Part #TUB072) for the door switch may pre-vent early switch failure by protectingthe switch from steam. Make the nec-essary adjustments to the activator orthe door switch after you haveinstalled the boot.

55)) Don’t forget – when replacing anold door gasket with a new one, recheck the positioning of the doorswitch and activator, then make anynecessary adjustments, and alwayscheck for steam leaks around the doorwith each of the above steps.

Working withTuttnauer Doors

Here are a few tips when adjustingthe door switch/activator on Tuttnauersterilizers.

11)) The Heat-On light and heatersshould come on when the door gasketcomes in contact and is completelysealed with the chamber surface – andnot before that. Listen for the clickingsound of the door switch at this time.

22)) The Door Switch/Activator (RPIPart #TUA066) is a spring loaded acti-vator that can be adjusted by tighten-ing or loosening the screw.Adjustments must be made so thatwhen the door is closed and the final

“You are the best vendor I use.”

“Like the famed battery rabbit, yourparts keep going & going & going.”

“Great Tech Service Dept.”

“I enjoyed – and learned a couple ofnew things from the article on sterilizermaint.”

“I think your PM posters are great!”

“We at ----- Dental deeply appreciatethe excellent prompt service with quali-ty merchandise that you have suppliedus with over the last 20 years. It hasindeed been fantastic having such asuperb source of many items. I havealso appreciated your courteous andhelpful personnel, who have manytimes gone above and beyond into ser-vice excellence.”

“Without parts from RPI, I would havegone out of business.”

In this day and age it is all too easy andcommon to complain about things, butnot all of us take the time to let othersknow when something has been donewell or gone right. We appreciate thetime you take to let us know if some-thing hasn’t gone right, but we all loveto hear that our efforts are worthwhile.

When we started RPI on a shoestring35 years ago, we had no idea where thebusiness would go; we were entering awhole new area. What we also couldnot imagine was that we would be ableto make a difference in the lives andbusinesses of so many people. It’s awonderful feeling!

We hope and pray that these next yearswill be even better and that they willbring good health, peace and prosperi-ty to all.

As you know, we are always lookingat ways to improve parts to make yourjob easier. This is a perfect example.

The Gendex GXP™ film processorsuse chemicals that are color-coded –red for developer, blue for fixer. Theirtubing is also color-coded – clear tub-ing for wash fluid and internal connec-tions, and heavily tinted red and bluefor the developer and fixer. The tubingcomes in two different sizes – one forfill and one for drain, and all six tubeshave black PVC spirals inserted intothem for support as well as to aid in thefilling and draining process.

Looking at the OEM's tubing, we real-ized that the red and blue tinted tubesdid not allow a clear view of the chem-icals flowing through them.

By Jim WisniewskiManager RPI Product Development

Our idea was to make all six tubes outof clear tubing so the user would havea good view of the fluid inside. Theproblem with this plan was that if weused all clear tubing we would lose thecolor-coding provided by the OEM'sheavy red and blue tinting.

But that didn't stop us. We located asource that could provide spiral insertsfor our clear tubing in almost any colorwe wanted. Ahhh! We did it!

We used transparent tubing to alloweasy viewing of the chemicals flowingthrough and we color-coded the tubingby using a red colored spiral for thedeveloper, a blue spiral for the fixer, and a black spiral for the wash tubing. This way users have the ability to visu-ally verify that they have the properchemical traveling through the correcttubing. We even created a "MasterTubing Kit" that includes all inlet andoutlet tubing for a complete rebuild(RPI Part #GXK041) – see page 4.

from the beginning, is that we willhave in stock the parts that we adver-tise, they will be of high quality at fairprices, and that we will back our parts100%. Nothing fancy. But, if youneed a part, and you see it in our cata-log or on our web site, call us and we’llship it to you that day, and you can relyon the part to work properly.

Other examples ofbusinesses thatdon’t overpromiseinclude giants likeMcDonald’s andTarget. You knowthat the vast majori-ty of the time you goto McDonald’s youwill get decent food(again, nothingfancy), reasonable prices, and a rela-tively clean environment. At Target, you get a good variety of decent prod-ucts at reasonable prices.

It’s something to think about for yourbusiness as well, and the promises thatyou keep. If you come through consis-tently on reasonable promises, yourcustomers will come to find you reli-able, and will keep coming back.Don’t tell your customer that you’llhave a piece of equipment back tothem in two days when you know itwill take at least three or four. Set theexpectations, and meet them.

40 PSI SAFETY VALVES TOFIT TUTTNAUER STERILIZERS(Continued from front page)

Looking at our oldest customers, I amsure that this is one of the keys to theirsuccess, as well.

I have listed those customers that arestill with us today – those who pur-chased from us in our first year ofbusiness. Like Louisiana Lab Repair, who, besides everything else, hasmade it back after enduring HurricaneKatrina. Good people of integrity likeOrlan O’Brien of the company Bio-Sentry Engineering in WhitmoreLake, Michigan. Companies that have

grown to be big playerslike Patterson Dental,Physicians Sales andService, Benco Dental, and Burkhart Dental. And locals who helpedus get our start, field test-ed parts, and allowed usto spend time pickingtheir brains like the goodguys at Medi-Call in

Corona, California, and AngelusMedical in Gardena. And family busi-nesses like the Rice family and PlazaMedical in Denver and the Duewelfamily of Doctor’s Equipment Servicein Kansas City, who like RPI, havebeen fortunate enough to survive thepassage of the business to the nextgeneration.

Many thanks to all of you early cus-tomers, and of course, to the manywho came later and still keep coming. We appreciate your loyalty and trust inus, and we’ll keep doing our best tokeep our promises.

But that is exactlywhat a number ofour early customersdid – they took achance on us.

There isobviously no longer a need for “the bigfight”. We might ask ourselves, “Havewe come all the way?” Not yet. Butwe’ve certainly come a very long way.
