RVP News
Buyers REPORTWhat we should be wearing.
Michele Hughes – Contemporary
and Lifestyle Buyer, Fenwick.
“Spring/Summer 2010 offers a
variety of styles for us to try.
Nautical is the big theme for
Spring. Navy stripes are seen
on jersey tops, t-shirt dresses
and knits. Wear with denim or
leggings and bright accessories.
(See page 10 for more ideas).
Boyfriend blazers are back
for another season – a slightly
oversized jacket worn with sleeves
rolled up is a simple way to look
chic and be the height of fashion.
The Utility to Military look has a
feminine touch this time around.
Jackets and trousers in fl uid
shapes with metallic detail and
gold trim keep the style sharp.
For high-
Summer pastel
fl oral prints,
ruffl es and frills
are making a
comeback, creating
a softer silhouette.
The Denim vs.
Slouch Pant debate
continues. Denim
remains a very
strong look, worn
skinny with zips
cut at the ankle
or boyfriend jeans
worn with abrasions
and tears. But
comfort rules in
a pair of rolled up
slouch pants or
turned-up chinos.
And if you buy one
thing this season,
make it a shirt dress.
This statement piece
is a must have for
every wardrobe.”
What’s IN THE BAG?Trainee teacher Jenny Marlio, 22, is back home in TW for a job interview.
She popped into Royal Victoria Place for a little retail therapy.
“I live in Southampton at the moment, so it’s nice to be back in Tunbridge
Wells. I’ve bought a jumper and these gorgeous shoes in Topshop, but
I’m also going to restock my Mac cosmetics collection (you can’t get it
everywhere). I love that there are so many new shops since I was last here.
I’m going to Superdry in a minute!”

With fl owers blooming indoors and out, we take a look at how to wear the season’s prettiest prints
Some
blossoms
appear to
have been
freshly
picked,
then lightly
scattered
over the fabrics. Others are bold
and abstract, with a strong,
modern edge. One thing is for
sure; fl orals are big this Summer.
From knee-length fi tted
dresses that wouldn’t look
out of place on Wisteria Lane
(Monsoon, Wallis @ Bhs,
Fenwick) to denim cut-offs with
a delicate print lining (£25 Jane
Norman), fl owery prints provide
an update for what you already
have in your wardrobe.
But the latest bunch of fl oral
pieces does not have to mean
‘girlie’. Team an abstract print
with distressed denims or throw
a biker-style leather jacket on
over a blossom print vest top
to keep the look contemporary
rather than cute.
Gorgeous patterns like these
mean we’re happy to be led down
the garden path. RVP

It’s a look that, like the tide, comes
in and out on a regular basis. This
Spring/Summer Nautical fashion
is right on trend and the Centre is
awash with stripes.
Primary colours are the pick
of the day, with brass button
detailing reinforcing the style.
Team wide leg sailor trousers in navy (£119
Hobbs) or white (£59 Autograph @ M&S) with
wedge heels (£18 Next) to see you through
Spring. In Summer, hems get a little higher
with smart city shorts (£25 Wallis @ Bhs).
And for your top half? Don’t be put off by
the old idea that horizontal stripes make you
appear wider. It’s a myth! So, experiment
with navy or red stripe tops (try Republic,
Hobbs and French Connection) until you fi nd
one that suits. Alternatively, pick a sweetly
striped sundress (from £34.99, Superdry) for
a really laid back look.
If you don’t want to go head-to-toe with
sailor style, invest in a short, fi tted blazer in
blue and white (£35 Next) to wear with your
favourite jeans. It’s an easy wardrobe update
and will keep out any unseasonal chills.
Footwear is your chance to add a splash of
vivid red. During the day, team crimson leather
sandals (£34.99 River Island) with fi tted shorts
and cap-sleeve tees. If you’re sporting the look
in the evening, though, towering heels
in scarlet (£70 Offi ce) are seriously
eye-catching peeking out from
those wide trouser hems.
Still not convinced on the stripe
front? Try spots (£59 Elvi). Or just stick
to block colours and add in pattern
via your accessories. From beach
bags to blue bow earrings (£22/£4
Accessorize), the little touches will
really accentuate the trend.
Finally, where would nautical fashion
be without the ubiquitous anchor? Pick
a necklace or bracelet adorned with
tiny boating memorabilia (Next, River
Island, Accessorize) to complete
your sartorial trip to the sea.
All aboard! RVP

It’s a look that really
can be tailored to
suit you. Demure
and feminine or
tough and edgy, the
delicate palette of
muted tones can be
mixed and matched
to create your own style.
While head-to-toe putty
shades may seem a little tricky
to pull off, as the weather gets
warmer, Neapolitan colours
become more appealing.
Instantly Summery, these
buttery shades are much more
forgiving than pure white. ➤

women’sfashionThe delicacy of the colour
range also gives you the
opportunity to really play with
cut and texture. The hard,
modern edge of streamlined,
creamy leather jacket (try
French Connection), for
example, contrasts beautifully
with the diaphanous qualities
of a blush chiffon blouse
or a lace vest (Topshop and
Republic). For a simpler,
urban look, try a jersey dress
in a pastel shade. Keep it from
looking too casual with a pair
of laced-up wedges and a
statement handbag (Gap).
And if you’re not sure this
trend is going to work for you,
look no further than the classic
mac (Bhs, Next, Fenwick). It’s
an investment piece that will
see you through Spring and
Summer for years to come.
Be brave and embrace the
pastel trend. It’s anything but
beige. RVP

Wear with…The beauty of grey is its
versatility. It tempers
bright colours, invigorates
black and compliments
soft pastels. Such is its
potential, it’s a shame
to limit it to just one
look. Nevertheless, we
recommend pairing it with
a delicate, fl oaty dress or
cut-off jeans and a pair of
fabulous heels like these
lattice-cut sandals from
Jane Norman.
Three Budgets
We carry the hope of an Indian Summer every year, but sadly the British weather often disappoints. That leaves us with a dilemma. We want to embrace lighter fabrics, delicate straps and shorter hem lines, but once the sun goes down, we yearn for our Winter coats! But do not despair. We have the perfect, stylish evening warmers to suit your purse. Take your pick from one of this year’s dusky grey leather jackets

It’s back. Double Denim has returned
to our shores and everyone’s trying it.
UpDoubling
If you didn’t wear it fi rst time
round (in the Eighties), there’s
only really one rule. Your two
pieces of denim must not be the
same colour blue! We suggest
playing with different weight
fabrics and even different
colours to ensure the look is
modern rather than retro.
If you really don’t think that
trend is for you, jeans
remain the wardrobe

The smoky look is over. Summer’s here and it’s time
to lighten up. We’re got the inside
track on the latest beauty treatsTable
DressingOn theFace OffEven on overcast days, UV rays can damage the delicate skin on our face. We’ve looked at a few of the best
foundations with built in SPF (Sun Protection Factor) available. They’ll keep your skin safe without adding time
to your morning beauty routine.
■ Clinique’s Even Better Makeup is the
one for you if your skin tone is patchy.
The lightweight foundation is designed
to reduce the appearance of irregular
skin colour if you use it regularly, so
you look better even without makeup.
It leaves your skin smooth and dewy,
while protecting it from the sun.
SPF15, £20 for 30ml from Fenwick.
■ If your skin is looking a little dull,
Vitalumière liquid foundation from
Chanel will give you a lift. It transforms
tired skin into a radiant, youthful
complexion
and, as it’s
also full of
moisturiser, it revialises at the same
time. SPF15, from £30, Fenwick.
■ The latest trend in beauty is mineral
make up, a more natural option which
is designed to let your skin breathe.
Maybelline has launched a range of
mineral cosmetics, including the Pure
Minerals Foundation. As it’s a powder,
it’s lighter than a liquid foundation,
but still contains the recommended
sun protection and leaves skin looking
fl awless. SPF15, £9.78, Boots.
■ Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation
is designed to look
like your
own skin
rather than
make up.
With built in
pore minimisers, you are left
with fresh, glowing skin. Unlike
other foundations, you can apply a
couple of layers of this make up to
create a more solid base. SPF15
£28 for 30ml, Fenwick.
■ Boots have added to their
anti-ageing range with the No7
Lift and Luminate Foundation.
Designed for more mature
complexions, it contains
ingredients that work together to
fi rm, lift and tone the skin.
SPF15 £15.50 for
30ml, Boots.

Alfa Romeos are more often noted for
sharp styling and crisp handling rather than economy. However, the Italian marque
now believes you can have your cake and eat
it with the new Mito engine line-up
MiToMultiAirTHE
Words: Dan Smith T
he MiTo’s been around
for a few years now
and the fashionable
supermini has been
popular with everyone
from style-conscious
mums to boy racers.
Now, though, Alfa will
be pitching their new ‘MultiAir’ line of
engines to a more eco-friendly audience.
The engines, which are to be rolled out
across the entire Fiat group, are high-
tech pieces of kit which use electro-
hydraulically controlled inlet valves
to boost economy whether the car is
pootling around town or being given the
beans on country roads.
In fact, Alfa claims that in the case of
its 1.4 litre FIRE turbocharged engine,
MultiAir reduces CO2 emissions by over
10 per cent, increases power by 12.5 per
cent and reduces fuel consumption by as
much as 10 per cent.
Whether you opt for one of the new
engines, or go for the standard units,
you’re onto a pretty decent car. Our test
motor is the standard 1.4 Veloce, which
produces 153bhp and sits on a set of
rather tasty 17” alloy rims. The MiTo is
also available in the entry level Turismo
spec as well as the mid-range Lusso.
Obviously the more you spend,
the more toys you get although it’s
pretty well kitted across the range
for a car that can cost as
little as £10,745. ➤

Even the basic package comes with
seven airbags and scores five stars (full
marks) on the Euro NCAP safety rating.
Overall Alfa have put together a
quality package; the whole range
comes with alloy wheels, CD player/
MP3 input plus electric windows and
locks all round. The car is only available
with three doors though, apparently to
emphasise its sporty features.
Whizzing around the bottom of TW is
a joy; the MiTo is an adept town car and
actually succeeds in drawing a few admiring
looks from the odd passer by. Heading out
onto the A-roads, my right foot gets a bit
twitchy and the 150 Italian ponies (rather
than horses) are more than happy to oblige;
this is genuinely a great fun car. The ride is
good and the rigidity comes from the same
chassis featured in the Fiat Grande Punto.
The ‘DNA’ button (standing for
dynamic, normal and all-weather)
means you can switch between three
modes which vary the throttle response,
suspension tightness and steering
speed. We preferred ‘dynamic’ of
course… I mean, why not?
The idea of the MultiAir engines
is that even using the more
sporty settings you receive strong
performance, while maintaining
relatively healthy fuel consumption,
which must be a good thing.
What Alfa has produced then, is
a great looking little car that drives
excellently, is £2k cheaper than a
MINI Cooper S and is a bit quirkier
now that those MINI’s are everywhere.
Plus with the new engines, this car is
even more appealing. RVP
VErDICT:The MiTo is a fun, run-
around motor that would
serve brilliantly as a
second car to the family
or as a first car for the
youngster. Keep an eye
out for the next in line

It’s a name synonymous around the world with decadent and luxurious chocolates, but did you know that Charbonnel et Walker’s delicious creations are made just a few minutes down the road?
The company, amongst the most
respected in chocolate making,
was created at the request of King
Edward VII (who was then Prince of
Wales) in 1875. His granddaughter,
our current monarch, still enjoys
her grandpa’s arrangement
maintaining Charbonnel’s Royal

Aside from being the Queen’s chosen brand, the
chocs are sent all over the globe and are available to
the rest of us mere serfs via the departments stores
