SAFETY INFORMATIONROYAL VENDORS’ COMMITMENT TO SAFETYRoyal Vendors is committed to safety with all of our product designs. We are committed to notifying the user of any possible danger involving the improper handling or maintenance of our products. The servicing of any electrical or mechanical device involves potential dangers, both to those servicing the equipment and to users of the equipment. These dangers can occur because of improper maintenance or usage. The purpose of this safety segment is to alert anyone servicing Royal equipment of potentially dangerous areas and to provide basic safety guidelines for proper upkeep.

This service manual contains various warnings that should be carefully read to minimize the risk of personal injury. This manual also contains service information to ensure that proper methods are followed to avoid damaging the machine or making it unsafe. It is also important to understand these warnings provide general guidance only. Royal could not possibly know, evaluate, or advise of all the conceivable ways in which service might be done. Consequently, Royal cannot predict all of the possible dangerous results. These outlined safety precautions are the basis for an effective safety program. Use these safety measures, along with the service bulletins, helpful hints, and product specification sheets, when installing or servicing Royal equipment.

We recommend that persons servicing our equipment maintain a similar commitment to safety. Only personnel properly trained should have access to the interior electrical and / or mechanical parts of the machine. This will minimize the potential dangers that are inherent in electrical and mechanical devices. Royal has no control over the vender once it leaves the premises. It is the owner or lessor’s responsibility to maintain the vender in a safe condition. See installation insert located in the new machine for proper installation procedures, and refer to the service manual for recommended maintenance procedures. If you have any questions, please contact the Technical Service Department at 1 800 931 9214 (outside North America, dial +1 304 728 8363).

SAFETY REGULATIONS• Read the safety segment before installation or

service.• Test for proper grounding before installing the

machine to reduce the risk of electrical shock and fire.

• Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet before servicing the machine.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND SETUP

INTRODUCTIONThis manual contains installation, operation, and service instructions for the Royal Vendors Freezer, by Royal Vendors, Inc. This manual also contains a parts catalog and electrical schematic for the Freezer.

UNPACKING THE FREEZER AND INSTALLING IT ON LOCATIONUNWRAP THE MACHINEUnwrap the unit and remove the padding. Examine all packages for damage to packaging material. Damage to external packaging may have resulted in unit damage. Check packages for all accessories and components, including legs, casters, and shelves. File a claim immediately with the shipping company if the shipment is damaged or incomplete.

PLACE THE UNIT ON LOCATIONUnits are designed for indoor placement only. Provide at least 4” (10 cm) of wall space behind the unit cabinet and any adjacent wall or fixture. Remove the shipping skids by inserting a claw hammer, crowbar, or similar device into the slot of each section to break it apart. Tilt the unit slightly to remove the separated pieces. Remove the leveling legs, and place the protective sleeve over the threads of the legs. Replace the leveling legs with the protective sleeve in place, and be sure the unit is level (see following section). The protective sleeves provide 3” (7.5 cm) clearance under the unit for cleaning.

LEVEL THE UNITTo provide adequate condensate drainage and proper door alignment and operation of unit, the unit cabinet must be level. The leveling legs are factory-installed.

To level the unit:The door is spring-loaded and will not function properly without proper leveling of the cabinet. Using an adjustable wrench, adjust the leveling legs so that the unit sits approximately level to the floor and the door closes properly. For best door operation, adjust the leveling legs so that the cabinet has a 1/16” (2 mm) rake or slant from front to rear. Optional casters are available to replace the leveling legs.

START-UP

PRELIMINARY CHECKSBi-pin lamp installation / verification (equipment with fluorescent lamps)Before applying power to the unit, verify that the lamp has been properly installed and is fully engaged in the lamp holders. The Freezer has one (standard) or two (optional) lamps inside the cooler.

To achieve proper lamp engagement, rotate the lamp 90 degrees from its insertion position until it snaps or clicks into place.

Visually verify proper lamp installation by checking the identification mark on the end of the bulb. If the bulb has been properly installed, the mark will be centered between the halves of the lamp holder. (Refer to Figure 3.)

Electrical supply and connectionsCheck to be sure that the electrical service to the unit meets all local and national electrical codes. Unit electrical data is shown on the unit data label, located on the inside of the cabinet in the upper left-hand corner. Review this label before initiating electrical service. The voltage range of the power supply to the unit should be 105 to 125 volts. Refer to the table below for unit data.

NOTE: Other motors or heavy appliances should not be used on the same circuit with the freezer.

INITIAL START-UPPower supplyConnect the unit to the power supply. Check to verify that the compressor, lamps, and fans are running.

IMPORTANT: Low line voltage is often the cause of service complaints. Check to see that the line voltage is within the specified range with the unit running.

Temperature controlThe temperature is controlled by a pre-set electronic thermostat.

CAUTIONImproperly installed lamps may cause damage to the lighting circuit. Royal Vendors will not be responsible for equipment or component

failures or other damages that arise from improper lamp installation.

DANGERBefore servicing the unit, disconnect electrical

service. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or electrocution and could cause personal

injury or death!

SETUP RECOMMENDATION1. To ensure proper operation, all units should be

allowed to run under normal operating conditions for a minimum of four hours before placement at customer locations.

2. After placement at the customer location, it is recommended that the unit is powered up and allowed to operate until the following day before filling the unit with product. This will ensure the unit has pulled down and is operating properly, and also ensures that the health timer lock has not engaged during initial pulldown. If the health timer engages during initial pulldown, reset the health timer.

3. Units should be stocked and restocked with product that is below health safety limits (0° F [-17.8° C] or lower) to avoid causing a health timer error. Not following this requirement could cause the health timer to engage due to product being too warm when loaded in the unit.

4. It is possible that a health timer error could be realized after a heavy-usage cycle in combination with extended door-opening times. During such a scenario, the refrigeration system may not pull down to the required temperature within the time limit allowed by the health safety timer, resulting in a health safety error which would require resetting of the health timer. Royal Vendors’ recommendation for heavy-usage locations would be placement of additional equipment to help minimize constant door-openings.

REFRIGERATION CONTROLLER OPERATION

A. POWER UP AND AFTER POWER FAILURE.

1. If the controller probe reads a temperature above the set point plus 5.4° F (3° C) at the time the freezer is plugged in the power outlet or after a power interruption:

For one second, the controller display will display three flashing horizontal bars; then, for two minutes the compressor, fan, and compressor icons will flash. During this two-minute delay, the compressor and fan are turned off. At the end of the two minutes, the freezer will enter a defrost mode for a time period equal to the set defrost duration (“dP”). The compressor and defrost icons will flash, while the display will alternately flash the freezer temperature and the letters “dF”. The alarm bell icon will also flash. Once the “dP” has expired, the freezer will go in dripping time mode (“dd”) for a period of one minute. During the dripping time, the fan and compressor will be off and their respective icons will flash. At the end of the dripping time, the controller will resume normal cooling operation.

2. If the controller reads a temperature below the set point plus 5.4° F (3° C) at the time the freezer is plugged into the power outlet or after a power interruption:

Same operation as above, except that during the initial two-minute delay, only the defrost icon will flash.

B. DEFROST.

1. Scheduled defrost: The defrost duration (“dP”) is factory-set at 199 seconds, but can be changed by the end user. Each defrost occurs at a set defrost interval (“dI”). This interval can also be changed by the end user, but is factory set at 120 minutes. The defrost interval starts at the end of one defrost mode and ends at the beginning of the next. At the start of the defrost duration (“dP”), the compressor and defrost icons will flash, while the display will alternately flash the freezer temperature and the letters “dF”. The alarm bell icon will also flash. Once the “dP” has expired, the freezer will go in dripping time mode (“dd”) for a period of two minutes. During the dripping time, the fan and compressor will be off and their respective icons will flash. At the end of the dripping time, the controller will resume normal cooling operation.

2. Manual defrost: It is possible to start a defrost mode by pressing on the defrost button (at the bottom right side of the controller display) for three seconds. The compressor and defrost icons will flash, while the display will alternately flash the freezer temperature and the letters “dF”. The alarm bell icon will also flash. Once the “dP” has expired, the freezer will go in dripping time mode (“dd”) for a period of two minutes. During the dripping time, the fan and compressor icons will flash, while the display will show the freezer temperature. At the end of the dripping time, the controller will resume normal cooling operation. This manual defrost is added to the scheduled defrost; i.e., the next scheduled defrost will still occur at the set interval (“dI”) after the last scheduled defrost and not at a set interval after this manual defrost.

C. COOLING AND CYCLING.

1. Cooling: The compressor, evaporator fan, and their respective icons will be on during cool down until the controller probe reaches the set point. The display will show the freezer temperature.

2. Cycling (the temperature is rising, but between set point and set point plus 5.4° F [3° C]): Once the freezer reaches the set point, the compressor, evaporator fan, and their respective icons will be OFF. The display will show the freezer temperature. As the compressor and fan are off, the temperature in the freezer will rise until it reaches set point plus 5.4° F (3° C). At that point, the freezer will switch back to Cooling.

D. DOOR OPENING.

1. Freezer in cooling mode: When the door is opened, the evaporator fan will be turned off and the fan icon will flash. The compressor and compressor icon will be on for a period of one minute (or up to two minutes, depending on the controller’s internal compressor protection parameters). After this one-minute period, the compressor and its icon will be turned off. The display will alternately flash the freezer temperature and “DooR”. If the door is opened long enough, the temperature in the evaporator box may drop below the set point, causing the controller to enter the cycling mode (at D.2.).

2. Freezer is cycling (the temperature is rising, but between set point and set point plus 5.4° F [3° C]): When the door is opened, the compressor, evaporator fan, and their respective icons will be off. The display will alternately flash the freezer temperature and “DooR”. If the door is opened long enough, the freezer temperature will reach set point plus 5.4° F (3° C), causing the controller to go into the cooling mode above (at D.1).

3. Freezer in defrost mode: The defrost cycle will continue normally as it would if the door were closed.

E. DEFROST SOLENOID VALVE.

The refrigeration system is a normal compressor, condenser cap tube, and evaporator system. To save energy during defrost, a hot gas line is connected from the middle of the condenser to the inlet of the evaporator, bypassing the cap tube. This hot gas line is equipped with a solenoid valve that is shut off during normal operation and open during the defrost duration (“dP”). When this valve is open, hot gas from the condenser enters the evaporator, defrosting its fins, tubes, and drain pan. (This is not a reversing solenoid valve. The evaporator and condenser still work as normal.) After the defrost valve is shut off, the evaporator fan is kept off for dripping time (“dd”) to allow time for any water droplets left on the fins to drip into the drain pan.

12 Royal Vendors Health Safety Freezer Operation, Service, and Parts Manual

REFRIGERATION SYSTEM SERVICE

REFRIGERATION UNIT COMPONENTSThe Royal Vendors Freezer refrigeration system consists of a hermetically-sealed compressor and finned evaporator and condenser coils.

Capillary tube (serial numbers 201713 and after)The capillary tube is located in the refrigerant line between the condensor and evaporator coils. The small-diameter tube is used as a metering device to control the flow of liquid refrigerant to the evaporator coil. This creates low pressure causing the refrigerant to vaporize and absorb heat as it passes through the evaporator coil.

CondenserThe condenser has finned coils which assist in removing heat from the refrigerant. The condenser requires periodic cleaning for maximum efficiency.

Condenser fan motorThe condenser fan motor assembly is mounted between the condenser and the compressor. Air is drawn through the condenser, over the body of the compressor, and out the rear of the unit compartment.

The motor is wired to cycle with the compressor, but it will continue to operate should the compressor cut out on the overload. The motor is permanently lubricated; therefore, oiling is not required or recommended.

DrierThe drier is installed in the system just before the capillary tube. It traps minute particles of foreign material and absorbs any moisture in the system.

Thermal expansion valveThe expansion valve is located in the refrigerant line between the condenser and evaporator coils. The expansion valve is used as a metering device to control the flow of liquid refrigerant to the evaporator coil. This creates a low pressure causing the refrigerant to vaporize and absorb heat as it passes through the evaporator.

HEALTH SAFETY CONTROLLER PINOUTS

The Health Safety controller is responsible for all proper function of the Health Safety system. The board is located in the bottom right section of the Cooler’s cabinet and is protected by a cover. Removing this cover will expose the board, along with all wiring connections to it.

OPERATION REQUIREMENTS: The Health Safety controller requires approximately 24 volts AC from the transformer. This allows the controller to function and to supply power to the components listed below.

PINOUTS: The Health Safety Controller has several electrical pinouts and an indicator LED. The following section outlines all the controller’s pinouts.

The word key refers to the small plastic insert plugged into a position of the wire harness connector. The purpose of the key is to prevent connecting the harnessing backward or upside-down. The “keyed position” is a blank position within the pinout (no pin) in which a key is inserted. Some pinouts may have several blank positions with a key plugged into one or more of the positions. You can use the key to determine which end of the pinout is Pin 1.

24 VAC (Position CN4): The harness connecting to this pinout comes from the transformer. It is imperative that the correct harness be connected to this pinout. If this harness is not connected, the Health Safety system will not function and the door will be locked.

HEALTH SAFETY CONTROLLER INFORMATION

SOLND (Position CN5): This harness connects to the solenoid. The solenoid is used to lock or unlock the door, depending upon the signal the controller receives from the door switch and the temperature sensor.

PIN WIRE COLOR SIGNAL / FUNCTION1 Red 24 VDC power for solenoid2 Black Ground

ERROR_SW (Position CN6): This harness connects to the external reset switch, located below the grille along the lower right-hand side. Resetting of the Health Safety system is performed using this switch.

PIN WIRE COLOR SIGNAL / FUNCTION1 Red Reset signal2 Black Ground for switch signal

DOOR (Position CN7): The harness connecting to this pinout comes from the door switch. From the signal received from this switch, the controller determines the current state of the door (open or closed).

PIN WIRE COLOR SIGNAL / FUNCTION1 Red Door switch signal; when the door is open, the switch is closed.2 Black Return to ground for switch signal

SNSR (Position CN8): This harness connects to the temperature sensor, which is mounted in the refrigeration deck. The controller uses the information received from this sensor to monitor the temperature inside the cabinet.

HEALTH SAFETY CONTROLLER OPERATION

1. When the controller is first powered up, a Health Safety error will be present, the diagnostic LED will be on continuously, and the controller will supply (-) 24VDC to lock the door. This is intended to prevent access to spoiled food or drinks whenever the previous state of the refrigeration is unknown.

2. To reset the Health Safety error, press the RESET switch. This will clear all errors, supply (+) 24VDC to the solenoid to unlock the door, and initiate a timer.

3. Upon reset, the controller will enter a 75-minute grace period. At the end of this grace period, the controller will sample the cabinet temperature to see if the temperature is below 0°F (-18° C). If it is NOT, the controller will trigger a Health Safety error and supply (-) 24VDC to lock the door, and the diagnostic LED will indicate a Health Safety error.

4. The controller constantly monitors the cabinet temperature. After the initial grace period has expired, the controller will assume normal operation and watch for an unexpected rise in temperature.

a. If the temperature is observed to rise above 0°F (-18° C), the controller will start a 15-minute timer.

b. If the temperature remains above 0°F (-18° C) for more than 15 minutes, the controller will trigger a Health Safety error and supply (-) 24VDC to lock the door.

c. If within this 15-minute period the temperature falls below 0°F (-18° C), the 15-minute timer will be reset and no error will occur.

5. The controller constantly monitors the state of the door switch. If the controller determines that the door switch has cycled (i.e., gone from closed to open or open to closed), the controller will begin a grace period.

a. The controller will allow a 75-minute grace period.

b. If the door again cycles during the timeout period, the grace period will be reset.

c. At the end of the grace period, the cabinet temperature must be at or below 0°F (-18° C). If the temperature is above 0°F (-18° C), the Health Safety error will be triggered and the

controller will supply (-) 24VDC to lock the door. If the temperature is below 0°F (-18° C), normal operation will resume.

6. The controller constantly monitors the AC power through an AC power detector circuit. When AC power is disrupted, the controller will shed all loads (LED, sensors, etc.), immediately supply (-) 24VDC to the solenoid from a capacitor or battery to lock the door, and enter into a low-power state of operation. The controller will remain in this low-power state for 30 minutes or until AC power returns. If AC power returns before the 30-minute timeout period has expired, the controller will sample the temperature upon power-up.

a. If the temperature is below 0°F (-18° C), the controller will return to normal operation and supply (+) 24VDC to unlock the door.

b. If the temperature is above 0°F (-18° C), the controller will trigger the Health Safety error and supply (-) 24VDC to lock the door (to ensure the door is still locked).

c. If power is not restored within the 30-minute timeout period, the controller will trigger the Health Safety error and enter into stop mode.

LED STATUS INDICATOR

The Health Safety controller has an on-board bi-color LED lamp (at the position marked “LED_DSPLY” or “DSPLY”) that indicates the state of its operations through a series of LED flash sequences. Each flash within a given sequence is separated by a one-second pause. Each flash sequence is terminated by a four-second pause. Multiple error codes are sequenced one after another and are separated by a four-second pause.

For example, the flash sequence below would indicate Message 1 (“The door is closed and everything is good”):

ON ON ONONOFF OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF OFF

Flashes Meaning / Interpretation0 (LED on continuously) The controller is waiting to be reset.1 Door is closed and everything is good. (green)2 Door is open and everything is good, or currently under defrost. (green)3* The temperature sensor is working, but the temperature is greater than 0°F (-18°C). (green)4 The controller has a health safety error. (red)5 The temperature sensor is unplugged or defective.6 not used7 not used8 not used9 Health safety error caused by the door being open too long.

The following would indicate Message 4 (“The controller has a health safety error”):

ON OFF OFFOFFOFF OFF ON OFF OFF OFF

* - It is possible to see three flashes during, or just after, a defrost. These flashes will go away before the freezer finishes cooling down.

DANGERBefore servicing the unit, disconnect electrical

service. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or electrocution and could cause personal

injury or death!

MAINTENANCE

FLUORESCENT LAMP REPLACEMENTRemove the lamps by rotating 90 degrees to align the lamp pins with the holder slots. Refer to “Bi-pin fluorescent lamp installation / verification” on page 8 for further information on lamp removal.

CONDENSATE DISPOSALThe evaporator drain pan is located in the base of the refrigeration deck. Airflow in the deck compartment hastens condensate evaporation so that external drain plumbing is not required. In general, this renders the condensate pan maintenance-free.

CONDENSERThe condenser should be inspected periodically for accumulation of debris, which should be removed. A vacuum cleaner or wire brush can be used to remove debris. Be careful to not bend the condenser fins.

CABINET EXTERIORCabinets should be cleaned with a solution of mild soap and water or mild household cleaner. Do not use caustic soap or abrasive cleaners, since these might damage the cabinet finish. Do not use steel wool, or rusting might occur.

INTERIOR SURFACEThe inside of the cabinet is coated with powder-coat paint. To clean, use a mild soap and water solution or mild household cleaner.

UNDERNEATH FREEZERUnderneath the freezer can be cleaned by hand or with an appropriate cleaning tool up to 1 1/2” thick, using a mild soap and water solution or mild household cleaner.

Royal Vendors Health Safety Freezer Operation, Service, and Parts Manual 39

WARRANTY AND CREDIT / RETURN POLICY

-UNITEDSTATESCUSTOMERSONLY-NOTE: This policy applies to new cooler and freezer sales only. Stock service parts are covered under a separate one-year warranty policy.

WARRANTIES(to the original purchaser and to one end-user, when obtained from the original purchaser)

Royal Vendors warrants coolers and freezers for five years. The warranty for the refrigeration system, consisting of the evaporator and condenser fan motors, compressor, evaporator, condenser, and the refrigerant tubing, will be for five years. Refrigeration warranties will follow the serial number of the original unit. If the unit fails while under warranty, the same serial number will be attached to the replacement unit to track warranty status. Any unauthorized tampering or cutting (tapping) will void the warranty. LED lighting, plus the Health Safety Controller board (if so equipped), are warranted for three years. All other parts, except fluorescent light bulbs and finish, are warranted for one year.

Royal Vendors’ obligation under warranty is limited to repairing or replacing the subject part at our option, when upon examination it was determined by Royal Vendors to be defective. Royal Vendors will pay shipping charges on all parts covered under this warranty when transportation has been made the most economical way. Labor charges to diagnose, repair, remove, or reinstall any part(s) are specifically excluded from warranty coverage.

The warranty is voided when a cabinet or any part thereof has been subject to misuse or alteration without proper authorization. Accident or damage caused by fire, flood, transportation, civil disorder, or act of God is not covered under warranty.

CREDITANDREPLACEMENTPOLICY

Creditsorreplacementswillbeissuedonwarrantyitemsiftheproperproceduresarefollowed:1. ROYAL VENDORS will pay shipping charges on all parts covered under this warranty when transportation has been made the

most economical way. (Example: Within the continental U.S.A., regular ground UPS.) An A.R.S. (Authorized Return Service) sticker will be sent with all warranty parts. This method of shipping is preferred for returning parts to Royal.

2. Credits will only be issued to warranty parts that have been ordered under our ADVANCE WARRANTY policy, not for parts ordered as stock. (NO EXCEPTIONS.)

3. When ordering warranty parts in advance, please have the full vender, refrigeration unit, and control board serial numbers.4. A copy of the Packing Slip, the correct serial number, and complete Return Material Tag (provided with part) are required for

returning parts. Please fill out the Return Material Tag completely, keeping the white copy for your records and returning the yellow copy with the attached part. Make sure to provide your company name, address, telephone number, serial number, and model number, along with a brief explanation of the problem.

5. If the item returned is not under warranty, it will be sent back to you at your expense along with a US$10.00 handling fee, or it will be scrapped.

6. All warranty parts should be properly wrapped and packed securely to avoid further damage. Royal Vendors’ parts that are returned from the field and have been tapped into, tampered with, not packaged properly, or have had the serial plate or label removed, will void the warranty.

7. If defective parts are not returned within 15 working days, the invoice will be due in full.
