The Royal Temple is a friendly yacht club. We take great pride in our club, its facilities and the great reputation the Royal Temple has earned over the years for its hospitality.
The clubhouse commands spectacular views over the Ramsgate marina, as well as the Royal Harbour. it is also possible to catch glimpses of the downs, the goodwin sands and south Foreland, as well as the French coast on a fine day.
The club is situated at the sailing crossroads of europe and it boasts a higher number of visiting foreign yachts than any other in the country. RTYC is always ready to welcome visiting yachtsmen to its facilities and is also able to offer overnight accommodation.
Ramsgate, with its high speed rail links, ferries to europe, excellent road links to london and welcoming marina, provides the perfect base or stop-off point for mariners travelling from the south or east coasts, or indeed from France, belgium or Holland.

History
The Royal Temple Yacht Club was founded in 1857 by a group of yachtsmen sailing from the Temple steps on the River Thames in the centre of london. Yachting as a sport had been established for some time and similar clubs were being opened throughout the uk.
Club racing started on the Thames but as the industrial revolution gathered pace commercial traffic on the river made racing increasingly difficult. Races began to be moved further and further down the river, until eventually it was decided that a more suitable base for racing should be found.
our Ramsgate clubhouse opened in 1896 whilst london remained the club’s centre of social activity. at this time it was not uncommon for members to hold grand banquets and bohemian concerts in order to raise additional funds for the club.
at the turn of the century 2,000 members dined annually at the Hotel Cecil. The Commodore at that time was baron de Rothschild, who was always accompanied by his close friend, The prince of Wales. The Royal Charter was granted in 1897 and the admiralty Warrant to wear the blue ensign was granted in 1898.
The club launched an annual Ramsgate Week regatta in 1898 which included a day’s racing at deal and broadstairs. it is not surprising that it took some time to break down the prejudice of the paid hands to racing in the neighbourhood of the goodwin and brake sands, but racers soon discovered that the waters of Ramsgate provided excellent courses for yachts of all sizes.

during the late nineteenth century, Ramsgate Week enjoyed many famous participants. The german emperor’s schooner “meteor” raced from Ramsgate until the First World War and king george v’s lovely cutter “britannia” raced regularly until 1924.
in 1897 the Royal Temple challenged and beat the French in their waters at the Coupe de France. The club famously laid on steamers so that members could follow the racing at Cannes. during the three years of racing, the Temple yachtsmen repeatedly won and attracted much attention from america.
soon after, an american team entered the competition with a yacht called “america” and donated a new trophy. This trophy is now known internationally as the america’s Cup.
in 1940 the RTYC clubhouse was requisitioned by the navy and renamed Hms Fervant, where it became an officer’s mess and control room for all the various naval activities in the north Foreland area.
after the war things were slow to recover and racing was mainly confined to small day’s boats such as essex one designs and dragons, which frequently crossed the channel to race in ostend.
during the 1950’s our regatta was known as kent Yachting Week and by the 1970’s the name had changed to Thanet Week which incorporated dinghy sailing.
The dinghy racing eventually declined but with the invention of plastic-hulled yachts, our ioR-rated fleet expanded and Ramsgate Week was re-launched.
The club was honoured by a visit of Her majesty The Queen and prince phillip in July 1993. she came to Ramsgate to launch a new lifeboat and chose the Royal Temple Yacht Club to recuperate and take lunch, with our Commodore and invited guests.

Racing & Cruising
RACInG
Ramsgate is a superb venue for keelboat racing. We have previously hosted World, european and national Championships including the X-99 national and World Championships, X332 nationals & impala national and europeans Championships.
our local racing fleet enjoys a full programme from march through to october with races held throughout the season.
Yachts can race in 2 iRC classes or the very popular 2 Cruiser classes when RTYC will provide a handicap for spinnaker or white sail only categories. The Cruiser Class is a great way to learn to race as regular training sessions are held throughout the season to encourage the novice.
in addition to this we regularly support events held in conjunction with our neighbouring clubs on the east and south Coast, as well as those in France, belgium and Holland.
CRUISInG
Royal Temple Yacht Club operates an active cruising programme for both sail and power boats. our emphasis is not so much cruising in company, but company while cruising.
With France visible from the harbour on a fine day we have several foreign ports only a few hours away, some in fact closer than london itself.
boulogne, Calais, ostend, nieupoort and blankenberg are therefore favourite haunts for a quick weekend away and a refill of the larder and wine cellar from what we now term as our local shops

Ramsgate Week
Ramsgate Week is the Royal Temple Yacht Club’s annual regatta and is widely recognised as the friendly regatta and the alternative to Cowes.
You get to meet all the competitors in the new enlarged club bar. every night there is live entertainment. The town is only a five-minute walk from your berth and there is an abundance of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.
Ramsgate Week offers both competitive and family holiday-style racing and there are a host of trophies to be awarded including the coveted gold Cup and the Qeii Cup, the only yachting cup ever to be presented by the Queen.

Royal Temple Yacht Club academy
Yachting and motor boating for the under 25’s
Royal Temple Yacht Club is keen to promote sailing to the widest possible community. The academy programme is aimed at young adults in our geographical area who may have minimal or no previous on-water experience.
The academy is to be launched during the 2011 season with two open days targeted at under-25’s. These will be followed by a social programme and classroom training along with individual mentoring for academy members.
all of the programme activities are targeted at building experience and confidence for members to increase their knowledge and ability on the water. academy members can expect to become proficient sailors and to gain all-round experience in all aspects of boat handling, cruising, racing and navigation within the first year.
Young people under the age of 18 are encouraged to join in the on-shore programme and will require parental or teaching staff supervision when on the water.
academy membership will be offered at an advantageous subscription rate and members will have full use of the clubhouse until the age of 26. at the age of 26 academy members automatically become Junior members of the Royal Temple Yacht Club.

navigation school
The Royal Temple Yacht Club operates an RYa-affiliated navigation school and offers a complete range of courses through theory and practical for both new and old sailors, motor boaters and social members. many of our members have learnt their skills from our in-house navigation school.
The Royal Temple school of navigation and sail Training is run by professionals with many years’ experience. The lecturers have, between them, sailed many sea miles including several ocean passages. They share their ancient mariner’s tales and anecdotes and help students gain new knowledge and experiences.
The navigation school offers both shore-based and practical courses; all based at the Royal Temple Yacht Club.
The shore-based navigation courses run during the winter months from october to march on monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7.30-9pm.
other shore-based courses such as vHF, Cevni, First aid and Radar are arranged as required and practical courses are available throughout the year. The school is usually fully subscribed, so remember to book early.
You will meet new friends and learn to read charts and plot courses, allowing for wind, tide and weather, master the Collision Rules and Regulations, find out what meteorology is all about, and much more besides.

The Clubhouse
You can enjoy our club bar seven days a week from 11am to 11pm. Whilst our club is usually busy over the weekends we do have rather excellent facilities that can be used for conferences and dining on weekdays.
The club has excellent caterers and provides a full restaurant service on a number of days each week, so it is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
The restaurant and dining room are on the first floor of the building and have the advantage of magnificent sea views to accompany excellent food and company whilst you enjoy your day at the yacht club.
visiting yachtsman are always welcome to use the club facilities throughout the year. dress is not restricted. The club has its own dedicated snooker room, just ask for the keys to the room from the bar staff and you can enjoy an afternoon or evening with your friends.

The Royal Temple Yacht Club is a perfect venue for private parties, luncheons, buffets, banquets, wedding receptions and conferences.
The main dining room seats 80 for a sit-down meal or 120 for a buffet-style meal. For smaller gatherings our Hold bar, with its own bar and dance floor, will seat 50 comfortably.
The function suites are managed by a dedicated, professional events management team. We can deliver a full range of services from table and room decorations, through to band and disco hire and themed menus.
For conferences and business meetings, we provide a wide range of presentation equipment. our meticulous attention to detail and first class service will ensure that whatever your event it will be memorable for all the right reasons!
