Just a reminder in the holidays to continue with reading. You could go and

Some exciting ‘time travel’ back to 1666 happened in Year 2 on March 12th.

Our guide was Serena from ‘Perform for Schools’,

who led us through the chaos of the Great Fire of London.

Year 2 became bakers at Thomas Farriner’s shop in Pudding Lane, producing delicious

treats for King Charles II, before witnessing the accidental spark which triggered the fire.

They created a soundscape of the fire itself, a Great Fire rap and also acted out the progress of the flames through the closely built wooden

houses of 17th century London. They fought hard to put out the fire using

leather buckets and water from the Thames; they gazed on the ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral and wandered the streets, homeless and lost.

What a great way to get a ‘feel’ for history!

Year 3 trip to the British Museum

On Wednesday Year 3 boarded the coach bright and early to begin the trip to the British Museum.

The main focus of our trip was to see the Sutton Hoo exhibition.

The children had particularly enjoyed learning about this in our History lessons, however we were also going to see

the Roman exhibits as this had been our focus in the Autumn term.

The Roman exhibition was our first port of call and the children armed with clipboards immediately started

drawing nearly everything they could see! Ancient statues, colourful mosaics and well-worn pottery all touched by

Roman hands a long time ago! After lunch we then went to see the famous Sutton Hoo

exhibition and it was wonderful to see the expressions of amazement as the children saw examples

of all the artefacts that they had learnt about from books and photos.

The helmet and the shield were a particular delight. This really brought to life everything the

children had learnt in class. The children were exceptionally well-behaved throughout

the day and our thanks must also go to Mrs Payne, Mrs Goppy, Mrs Thurbin, and Mrs Stephens

who gave of their time to help us to make this visit such a success.

House Music Competition

Well done to all, who took part in our annual Junior School ‘House Music Competition’

on Wednesday evening. Canterbury, Durham, Exeter and York Houses were all represented in five competing music

categories and it was a very exciting event which showcased the considerable

talents of our young musicians. Special thanks go to Mr Millward –assisted by

Mr Thompson, who adjudicated the competition and provided such encouraging

comments and positive feedback in his presentation at the end of the evening.

Well done once again to all the musicians who performed in their individual instrumental

categories and congratulations to Durham House who were the overall winners.
