G onna Go Back in Time

I’m about to sound like a real nerd here. October 21, 2015 is

known to many as “Back to the Future Day” - a nod to the film

where our heroes Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel 30 years

into future to save Marty’s kid from becoming a bad apple.

Perhaps not the best risk to take….disrupting the space-time continuum in order

to do some distant future parenting. But nonetheless that’s how we get to peer

into the future.

And what a future it is. Holograms that come to life. Flying cars. Internet video chatting. Sneakers with auto-tying laces.

Cameras everywhere. Head-mounted displays. The ability to watch more than one tv program at a time! We have

some of these things. I’m personally still waiting for a hoverboard, as I think it would be pretty stellar to zoom down

Main Street to visit our friends and neighbors. But alas, that particular technology has not come to pass.

What’s interesting is the movie depicted what 2015 would look like from the 1985 perspective. Only 30 years. It makes

you wonder—what will life here in Yarmouth look like in 30 years?

I like to think of Yarmouth as a town that will always be in a state of becoming. We have all the assets here to grow.

And while we will always hold true to our people and ensure that our residents are granted all the wonderful benefits

small town Maine has to offer, we also have an opportunity to introduce new business concepts and test new methods

for economic growth. We can be a showcase for progressive yet responsible business development. We can add

businesses, and help our existing businesses grow. We can build respectfully.

Much of our work at the Chamber in 2016 will be focused on this exact premise — illustrating both within and beyond

our borders how a community can grow while maintaining our core values. Time to raise our profile. On to 2030.

Cheers,

Andrew T. Smaha | Executive Director
