France/ItalyCharlemagne (74? – 814) Desiderata de Lombardie (747 – 776)

• Charlemagne, King of francs from 768 to 814 then Emperor of West from 800, got married to Désirée de Lombardie, princess of Lombardie, in 770 in an attempt of peaceful arrangement with the Lombard.

• Unfortunately, the marriage only lasted on one year, Charlemagne rejected his wife because of her infertility.

France/ItalyHenri II (1519 – 1559) Catherine de Medicis (1519 – 1589)

• Henri II, King of France from 1547 to 1559, get married to Catherine de Medicis, duchess of Urbino, in 1533. They were both only 14 years old.

• This marriage, suited between Fran.ois Ier (Henri’s father) and Pope Cl.ment II (Catherine’s uncle), had for aim to make a common front against Emperor Charles Quint, who was very powerful.

France/PolandLouis XV (1710 – 1774)

Marie Leszczyńska (1703 – 1768)

• Louis XV, King of France from 1723 to 1774, get married to Maria Leszczyńska, princess of Poland, in 1725.

• The marriage was suited by the Duke of Bourbon, who chose Marie among a list of European princesses, in the hope that the king had a descent quickly because his health were fragile (they finally had 10 children in 10 years, but only two boys).

France/Norway and ItalyOscar Ier de Suède (1799 – 1859) Jos.phine de Leuchtenberg (1807 – 1876)

• Oscar Ier, King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 to 1859, get married to Jos.phine de Leuchtenberg, princess of Bologne and duchess of Galliera, in 1823.

• Both had french origins :• - Oscar Ier was born in Paris, 11 years before his father Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte

became King of Sweden as Charles XIV Jean. His mother was D.sir.e Clary.• - Jos.phine de Leuchtenberg was the granddaughter of Empress Josephine, first

wife ofEmperor Napoléon Ier.
