  • INVESTIGATING OFFICE~ 'S REfORT

Des JONES, ATC Radar operator at Kalamunda on the night in question, stated that he had recaived a strong, stationary "paint" in position approx . 2q5 deg;rees MaE, netic, Perth Airport, at } Nautical ·>iles . (The latter position was only a calculated one and tbe writer preferred the accurate one of 300 degrees, 9 NM from the Kalamunda Site) . He had first observed the return whilst talking on the phone to Mrs Cosgr~ve(Wife of M. A.Cosgrave, Air Traffic Controller), who had observed object 11 lH e a bi g stre.et light" in the sky over Cloverdale . ~e return appeared for 36 second intervals,(three swee~s of antenna) at 1101, 1108, 1115, 1118, 1136 and 1142Z. Aircra~t VH-ASY was about 4Nl·J SE of object when first plotted at 1101Z, but ASY reported Nil sighting. Although the object finished painting at 1142Z, he ha d reported it's last known position to a F27, VH-FNA at 1200Z. FNA was radar vectored into circuit and kept ~N}; clear of l ast known position of object and also reported Nil sighting . All radar returns from the object were strong, and were far larger than any aircraft would normally have painted at that close range. He had MTI selected and all permanent echoes were at a minimum . Des Jones could offer no explanation whv a stationary ob j ect could have returned such a strong paint with MTI selected.

Met Radar at Perth Airport also had an unusual return that evening but times and position did not tally with the Kalamunda report . Ralph BULLOCK, Met Observer at the radar site had noticed an unusual paint on his screen between 1045Z and 1115~ bearing 320 degrees 5600 yds from the site . The return, tnough stationary, had given the ' lacy pattern ' he normally expected from a moving aircraft . At 1115Z he had had to perform a radar flight, (See balloon release time on Obsrrver's report) and had been busily engaged for about 50 minutes . On completion of this task he had looked again for his object and had found it still present but now exhibiting the normal return of a permanent echo . Be again left the set and some thirty minutes later had checked the screen and found only a small PE in the previouslv stated position . 1-'.r Bul.ock has been a radar operator with the RAF in tlorld ~"far 2 and for 19 years as an operator with the Meteorological Department and in all that time never observed a return like the one he bad that night .

An investigation of the area 320 degrees 5600 yds frn~ +he 'et Radar site revealed it to be the site of the Overseas Telecommunidations Centre, EDEN HILL . This area is festooned with large antennae, including two huge RF aerials( Yargies) and as a slight inversion had been present on the evening of the 23rd ~~y, it is possible that the latter might have been lhe cause of the return on the Met Radar . In no way would they have been the cause of the Kalamunda return .

Mrs Cosgrave stated that the object had departed to the North at tremendous speed and had disappeared from sight but as the Kalamunda 'fix' is 3 miles due North of Cloverdale it is possible that the object could once again have become stationary out of her sight . The ~Jri ter was accompanied in his enquiries by Mr O.H. TURNER , Dept . of Defence , Canberra, and as the latter has coji l ed a se parate report on this matter, no further investigation ~s contemplated at this stage .
