aesthetically pleasing facility is a key aspect in the perceived quality of care and the ultimate success of the organization.

ideal dentistrylouisvillE, ky

An empty shell space within a retail shopping center was transformed into a contemporary, state-of-the-art and forward thinking

dental practice. The small footprint of the building called for a vibrant color palette. Capitalizing on the opportunity of an already

existing building height, Rowland designed a sloping 22 foot ceiling, creating a welcoming entry that attracts not only customers

but passersby. Three dimensional massing of the wall and ceiling planes was designed to convey a sense of privacy for the

patient, yet allows for a synergistic workflow for the doctor and his staff. The scale of the opening into the operatories, absent of

doors, accomplishes both of these desires.

the healing placelouisvillE, ky

Based in louisville, The Healing Place is a non-profit alcohol treatment program that is creating a new Women and Children’s

Community. The community desired a design that incorporated their intent of reaching the homeless and offering the addicted the

opportunity to re-establish productive lives. Through color and imagery, the design creates a sense of restorative growth as women

journey through the program and the space. Color schemes transition from contemplative to energetic as they move through the

building, just as each resident moves through the program. Graphic motifs of butterflies for transformation, doves for hope, and

flowers and vines for healing and life reinforce the message. This project is taking steps to be acknowledged by the united states

Green Building Council as a lEED silver building.

Joy’s houseinDiAnAPolis, in

located in Broad Ripple, Joy’s House is a not-for-profit day care for adults and a haven for their families. This ambitious renovation

and expansion has resulted in tripling its size while remaining sensitive to the original farmhouse architecture and neighborhood

bungalows. Though not registered with the usGBC, lEED silver guidelines were used throughout the design and planning

process. The residents participated in the process wherever possible. A state of the art kitchen, dining areas, library and a variety

of lounges with new furnishings make Joy’s House a comfortable and inviting place, as well as an enhanced garden and other

features which reduced maintenance and enhanced sustainability.

calo spa mdlouisvillE, ky

With the vision in mind to bring together advanced treatment technology with abundant patient amenities, Rowland Design

began by changing a former restaurant into a surgery center and spa facility. A medical spa occupies the two-level north

wing. Accessed from the main lobby, clients enter an environment of inviting curvilinear and elliptical shapes. selected for

both aesthetic and practical reasons, the shapes designate the client’s entrance into places of relaxation and comfort, while

interrupting direct sight lines into treatment areas. This project won the iiDA’s 2008 iDEA Award for Healthcare Design and was

featured in the Architectural showcase edition of Healthcare Design magazine.

The design for this office revolved around catering to patients in their 40’s and 50’s. Due to the length of procedures, planning

efficiencies became one of the most important elements in the design. A soft, neutral color palette becomes the backdrop to

outdoor views for each patient space.

floyd memorial hospitalnEW AlBAny, in

Floyd Memorial Hospital has been a client of Rowland Design’s for many years. our projects together have impacted the interiors

and wayfinding for several departments within the facility. This recent renovation provides healing and inspirational environments

for patients to receive quality care. This is a message the hospital wants to continue to make evident to the surrounding

communities and values what good design can add to their mission.

The art of defining an integrated wayfinding system is critical in healthcare facilities. Though Rowland Design was responsible for

creating new signage programs for both the interior and the exterior of this renovation, they were also integral in creating clear

pathways within the facility through the use of different interior finish materials, furniture arrangements and artwork. A consistent

theme of using prairie style design elements tied the design together.

As part of Caritas Medical, the new office for Bluegrass orthopedics needed to offer an inviting and warm atmosphere for their

clients. Creating an environment that promotes a positive feeling of health and well being was an important goal of the design. A

calming palette of pale greens and soft blues with the use of natural maples adds to the serene setting.
