After slogging through a victory Friday over Geor- gia Southern, sophomore Malcolm Hill acknowl- edged the Illini had been too nonchalant in their approach to the season. “We had the too-cool mindset,” Hill said. “We were feeling ourselves a little bit. Just walking around or not getting in a defensive stance or talking. Coach Groce says talking isn’t cool these days.” Against Coppin State on Sunday night, the Illini were anti-cool — which should make them excep- tionally popular in Cham- paign after a 114-56 victory at the State Farm Center. “We weren’t worried about being cool,” Hill said. The Illini (2-0) shot 55.4 percent, including 60 per- cent in the first half. They made 15 3-pointers to tie an arena record. Six play- ers scored in double fig- ures. They had 24 assists and just nine turnovers. None of that is why Groce praised his players. “The game really started with our defensive disposi- tion,” he said he told his players. “The storylines to- morrow are going to read points, assists, 3s. There probably are not going to be a lot of defensive pos- sessions on the news to- night. Don’t ever fall for that.” Groce especially lit into Hill after Friday night’s performance, which even Hill deemed “soft” after he shot 2-for-6 and turned the ball over three times. Against Coppin State, he scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting with nine re- bounds (five offensive), four assists, two steals and two turnovers. “I wanted him to com- pete,” Groce said. “He’s usually pretty good at that. I felt like someone jumped into his body (Friday). Once he saw those things (on film), that fired him up to play with an intensity level tonight that we should expect all the time.” Illinois held Coppin State (0-2) to 29.6 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers. Guard Ahmad Starks and forward Leron Black scored 18 points apiece to pace the Illini. The crowd cheered when the team reached the 100-point mark for the first time since 2004. What was that like for the players? “We held them to 56,” Starks said. “Coach is way more proud of us on that side of the floor. It was a fun game to play.” But definitely not cool.
