August 2014

August 2014 Welcome to the August edition of the Rounda-bout. I hope everyone had a great time at the village festival despite the rain-shortened day! In this issue we have a couple of articles relat-ing to WWI. One about our village VC recipient and the memorial stone we are to receive; and one about Buckden, Stirtloe and the war effort by Barry Jobling. There are also events to commemorate the start of WWI; a service in St Mary’s on August 3rd and the ‘Lights Out’ event the following day(p10). More information on this can be found at http://www.1418now.org.uk/lights-out/ The answers to last month’s crossword puzzle can be found on page 11. We have had many positive messages about including this and so we will endeavour to include more puzzles in future months. As always, we welcome any and all feedback, but we are particularly keen to receive letters/emails direct to the editor for potential publica-tion, as well as seeing debate on the website forum, found at:

Launch of our Village Plan The Annual Parish Meeting, which took place on 17

th June 2014, saw the formal launch of the Village Plan for

Buckden and Stirtloe. The Village Plan has been the work of the independent Village Plan Steering Group and was formally adopted by the Parish Council at our March meeting. The action plan section of the Village Plan will be invaluable to the Parish Council and, we hope, to other organisations when making decisions in the future. We would like to thank all members of the Village Plan Steering Group for their hard work and tenacity in producing such a useful document. You may access the Village Plan on either the Parish Council or Roundabout websites at: www.buckdenparishcouncil.org.uk or www.buckdenroundabout.info For residents who prefer a paper copy, these are available from the Parish Clerk at the Village Hall or from the library.

Offord Railway Crossing

At the Parish Council meeting on 8th July, we received a presentation from the consultants who are carrying out a

feasibility study for Network Rail on the future of the level crossing at Offord. By the time that you read this article,

you may well have visited the exhibition at The Offords that gave more specific detail than the representative was

able to give at the PC meeting. However, for those who did not attend the Offord exhibition, we are able to report

the following information given on 8th July:

The consultants are carrying out a feasibility study and will report back to Network Rail. The study will ex-

amine all the level crossings between King’s Cross and Doncaster with a view to closing as many as possi-

ble. The rationale behind the closures is to maximise the efficiency of new rolling stock and up-graded sig-

nalling that will be in place by 2019-20.

If Network Rail decide to go ahead with the closure of the existing crossing, the issue will almost certainly

be taken to a public enquiry.

A road crossing will remain open between The Offords and Buckden. The plan is to build a bridge that

will cross the railway line only (i.e. not the river as well) just north of The Offords, swinging back to link with

the existing road over the bridges.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be catered for, possibly with a second bridge.

There will be consultation with local councils.

Buckden Parish Council will keep residents up-dated as more information becomes available.

Allotments Do you fancy growing your own vegetables and fruit? Would you like to get some tangible return for exercising in the fresh air? Why not think about taking on an allotment? Our waiting list is now very small and we are accepting new names, anticipating that allotments might be available in the near future. If you would like to put your name down, please contact the Clerk to the Parish Council, details below.

Any questions or comments on this report can be addressed to the Parish Clerk John Chase, Clerk to Buckden Parish Council, Buckden Village Hall, Burberry Road, Buckden PE19 5UY, Telephone (01480) 819407, Email [email protected] Do not forget our website at www.buckdenparishcouncil.org.uk

The Parish Council will not meet in August. If required, the Parish Council’s Planning Committee will meet on Tuesday 12th and Tuesday 26th August starting 7pm. Agendas for the meetings are posted on the Parish Council notice boards not later than the Satur-day preceding the meeting.

FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR Please note that my July article stating that parking charges across the Park and Ride sites would come into affect in July 2015 was a mistake and should have read July 2014. Please also note that there is no over night parking at Park and Ride sites and full details of opening times for 5 sites in Cambridge, Longstanton and can be found on the website www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/info/20024/park_and_ride Network Rail has asked WPS to undertake a feasibility study into the closure of all 20 level crossings from cen-tral Bedfordshire through Cambridgeshire and Peterbor-ough. Network Rail are looking into closing all 73 level crossings from King’s Cross to Doncaster. This a holis-tic approach to improving rail efficiency, reliability and safety and whilst safety is not the primary driver for clo-sures it is a consideration. Another consideration is the massive investment from Network Rail on new, faster trains and signalling. WPS will consider alternative crossing options in the form of bridges and/or under-passes which will be open for public consultation until the end of August 2014. The feasibility study will under-take traffic surveys, environmental impact assessments and flood plain surveys and will consider how the pro-posed alternative crossings will affect traffic flow and volume. A second round of consultations will open in the winter of 2014 allowing Network Rail to then make a decision whether or not to go ahead with the planned level crossing closures and implementation of the alter-native proposals for crossings at each site. If Network Rail do decide to make this massive investment in the rail network it is expected that they will apply for a Transport and Works Act Order to the Secretary of Transport in the summer of 2015. For further infor-mation please ring 08457 114141 and to submit re-sponses to the consultation please visit www.networkrail.co.uk/ECMLlevelcrossings.

Please do not hesitate to contact me.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH (NHW) Local Crime. On 14

th June a man was seen in Lees Lane, Southoe

loading a ‘Hello Kitty’ adult cycle, a Schwinn Beach Cruiser cycle and a Bosch lawnmower stolen from the rear garden into a white Luton-style box van. On the same day, an X-registered Citroen Saxo was broken into in Manor Gardens in Buckden and moved 40 metres down the road and abandoned. The next day it was re-entered, the door tampered with but nothing was stolen. The police would wel-come any information on these incidents. Be Your Own NW Coordinator! You can have the same access to all of the infor-mation your Village Coordinators have and receive Crime alerts by opening the UK NW website at www.ourwatch.org.uk, selecting Get Involved and registering your interest. You can select whose crime reports to receive and how. If you wish, you can join our village group by finding us by name or postcode on the home page and re-questing membership. A Local Scam. There has been a report this week that a person in the Huntingdon area was contacted by telephone by a company saying they were carrying out a survey on behalf of the Council. They knew their name and address as well as their telephone number and wanted to make a house visit. The person did not agree to anything and rang the County Council's Customer Contact Centre to check if the call was legitimate. One of the Council's Officers then rang the Company back and pretended to be responding to an earlier call. The Council Officer was asked a large number of questions about his lifestyle, which continued for ap-proximately ten minutes before the Council Officer terminated the call. During the questioning he was told that some of his answers meant he could be in for a cash prize with details to follow. Almost immedi-ately after the call was terminated the Council officer was telephoned by another Company wanting to sell him a subscription to the Guardian newspaper. Please be aware of the above when receiving calls - the County Council have stated that they do not make calls asking questions or seeking information of this kind. These scam companies pass on your details to others (without your permission) and it is highly un-likely that there is any prize to be won.

best to ensure that the best solution is obtained for the planned alternative route. One of the primary requirements for the village to emerge from the recently adopted Village Plan was the need for a cycle/footpath from Buckden to Grafham Water. I have been asked by the Parish Council to form a small Action group of interested village residents to examine options for a suitable route and to take the lead in per-suading the District and County Councils and other Agencies to find the necessary funds for the proposed pro-ject. If you are interested in being involved please contact me. Terry Hayward District Councillor, Buckden Ward 07884268175 or [email protected].

FROM YOUR DISTRICT COUNCILLOR First may I add my congratulations to the organisers of the splendid Buckden Village Festival. The weather did its best to dampen spirits but until the downpour a great time was had by all. Residents are rightly concerned about the possible im-pact of the planned removal of the level crossing be-tween Buckden and The Offords. Make sure that your voice is heard by contacting either Richard West, Julie Wisson, me or the Parish Council. We shall do our

Buckden Parish Council Photography Competition The Photography Competition, sponsored by the Parish Council, and held in conjunction with the Buckden Festi-val was a great success. We had well over one hundred entries, of a very high standard, which certainly caused the judge a headache. It’s obvious that we have some very talented photographers in the village. The photos were displayed in the Aragon Room of the Village Hall during the Festival and many people came along in the course of the afternoon to admire them. Winners of each theme in each age group received £10, and the overall winner of each age group wins the Parish Council shield. The winning photographs can be viewed on the Buckden Roundabout website here: http://www.buckdenroundabout.info/community/parish-council-photo-competition Winners Age Group: 10 years old and younger Theme: Pets Holidays Water Louise Read Adele Burbidge Adele Burbidge Winner of the Shield: Adele Burbidge Age Group: 11 to 16 years old Theme: Pets Holidays Water Daniel Hawkes Daniel Hawkes Daniel Hawkes Winner of the shield: Daniel Hawkes Age Group: Adults (17 and older) Theme: Pets Holidays Water Marion Lomas Martin Shirley Martin Shirley Winner of the shield: Martin Shirley Runners-up: James Miles, Lucy Waller, Catherine Miles, David Ray, Brian King and Philip Miles. BUCKDEN VILLAGE FESTIVAL It was great to see so many fantastic costumes and banners in the parade. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. There was a real carnival atmosphere as we toured around the roads of the village. The fete was just beginning to get going when unfortunately the rain decided to get going as well. We were able to move some of the displays to the Village Hall but the rain continued to fall and conse-quently with a very water-logged field we reluctantly decided to pack up early. There are too many people to thank individually here but particular thanks to Pat King who organised the parade and Nathan Cook who organised the fete, and also to my wife Karen and Trevor Brown for running a successful raffle. So many of you were in involved in so many ways - so a big thank you for that. It is only through the village acting as a community and sorting out their bit as a team that the event is so much fun. As the Festival has grown so has the amount of preparation required to put it together. There will inevitably be some people who will not be able to help next year so in order to keep the Festival for the village we need some additional helpers. You may not know how you can help but there is always the right slot. Please let us know on [email protected] if you could spare a few hours (if the load is spread it is actually quite fun). We also welcome any feedback or ideas for next year. Philip Miles

WOW where did all those magnificent hero costumes come from? What an inventive, clever community we have. What splendid banners and what enthusiasm! I, as the Parade organiser, was overwhelmed by the turn out. Thank you to all those who joined in and to all those who waved us along; to all those who moved their cars off the route; to the people who waited patiently whilst we paraded in the road looked after by our admirable Marshals. Without your active participation it wouldn't happen. Well done everyone. Also I must admit to being reduced to tears during the Parade by being overwhelmed by the fantastic turn out and by two young lads who came and thanked me for organising it. You all made it so worthwhile. Thank you. Pat King

‘The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime’

A hundred years after these words were said by the then Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, the Royal British Legion is asking every household to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on August 4th leaving only a single light or candle* for a symbolic act of reflection and hope. On that night we will remember more than a million Commonwealth service personnel who lost their lives during the First World War. Red Cross Week May 2014 Many many thanks to all of you who gave to our col-lection and helped us to raise £1515 to make more help available for people suffering a crisis in their lives. For the Red Cross every crisis is personal, especially if you are an elderly person leaving hospi-tal to an empty house, or a mother with a dying baby in South Somalia needing special foods. Tuesday 2nd Sept, 10a.m.- 12 noon. End your summer holidays on a high with fun and games, crafts, stories and songs (and maybe even a biscuit or two) as we join superhero Daniel in a den of scarey lions! It's free and everyone's wel-come, so do come and join in.

WOOL

If anyone has any double-knit wool that they could donate, I would be extremely grateful to receive it. I am knitting blankets for Tanzania, for charity, as an on-going project. Even odd balls are useful. I would come and collect them, please phone 810464 or, alternatively, deliver them to 3 Lark End (2

nd left off Vineyard Way), Buckden.

Thank you, Yvonne

VILLAGE NEWS

Friends in Deed

I begin with an apology. The number of our Co-ordinator was given wrongly last month. The rever-sal of two digits makes all the difference and I am sorry people had such difficulty contacting Christine Lawrence. This month it is correct.

To more agreeable things. Our very successful Wednesday Cafe will continue throughout the summer months when there is often a lull in other activities. WE are also looking forward to our Summer Tea Party which will be held on August 13th. in the garden of The Bowlings, the home of Pam and Miles Falla. We thank them in advance for their hospitality. If you have had any connection with Friends in Deed, you should receive an invitation. Please reply, either through your visitor, if you have one, or to the number given. If you do not receive an invitation but would like to come, please do not be too shy to ask. Also, we can help with transport if you let us know in good time. We hope to see many of you there on what is always a very happy occasion. Our numbers are: Help and information Christine Lawrence 07810 006598 Transport Andy Scott 07914 669967

Here for the people of Buckden

We had an indoor garden party to take us into our summer break. Lovely nibbles and lovely company. A fun quiz and the competition to bring something that you could not live without was won by Pam Siddall who entered A Cup of Water. So true, although we could have done without the water that fell on the Buckden Village Festival Fete! Thanks to all mem-bers that brought cakes for our stall and to those who bought them.

Andy King, who runs a Line Dancing class on Tuesday evenings in Southoe Village Hall at 7pm, was helped by his display team to get us up and dancing at our party. Ye-How! Great fun. Hope some of you saw us on Angry Britain where we were highlighting the need for safety measures on our roundabout. We are using humour to get a very serious matter into peoples minds. Please keep up the pressure by letting the Highways Agency know each time you have a near miss on the roundabout. Don't let them forget our plight. No meeting in August. Our next meeting is on September 2nd. We still have some seats left on the coach going to Darwin's House on 17th September. Do let me know if you would like to come. Everyone welcome. Have a lovely summer Pat King 01480811020, 07905225911, [email protected]

Buckden Over Sixties Club Firstly, my apologies, I have had a sick computer and it has only just come back to me. CHANGES TO OUTINGS PROGRAMME: Outing on September 3 will now be to CORBY TOWN with a trip encompassing Asda, Range, Matalan etc. Cost to members £15 non-members £16 Departing Methodists, Glebe Lane, Cranfield and Southoe at 9am. Outing to Duxford & Scotsdale has been changed as this involves too much walking for most of members. NOW WOBURN ABBEY WILDLIFE PARK AND FROSTS AT WOBURN. COST TO BE ADVISED. Departing as above. To set everything straight for members, and others. There have been rumours that the club will close. This is no rumour – Club will cease after the Christmas Dinner. Members will be formally informed in due course. The prob-lem is that I have no treasurer after this date. I do much of the work myself, but unfortunately it would be illegal for me to do the treasurer’s post as well. Hope to see you all at the outings, remember, whilst preference will always be given to members re bookings, this is open to all who wish to come along. Please give me a call on 01480 811054. That’s all for now folks, Pat Wright, Chair

WORLD WAR I

Victoria Cross Commemoration – an honour for Buckden As part of their commemoration of World War 1, the government has announced that each community

that was the birthplace of any recipient of a Victoria Cross during that war is to receive a commemora-

tive paving stone to mark this outstanding award.

Buckden can be proud that Captain John Green, RAMC, Medical Officer to the 1/5th Sherwood Forest-

ers, was born in Buckden. Coneygarths, on the High Street, was home to the family for several genera-

tions.

Captain Green was awarded a posthumous VC for his conspicuous devotion to duty during the morning

of 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The citation tells how approaching the enemy

lines he found a badly wounded fellow officer caught up in the wire and suffering greatly. Although him-

self injured, he managed to free the man and drag him to a nearby shell-hole. Here he dressed his

wounds while under almost constant attack from bombs and rifle grenades. He then sought to get his

colleague back across No Man’s Land to safety. They had almost succeeded when the wounded man

was hit again. John Green stopped to help him, only to be hit and killed instantly. His body was not re-

covered until the following spring.

John Green was 26 years old when he died and had been married for six months, to the day. His 20

year old brother had been killed in the previous October.

1st July 1916 is an especially poignant date because, as many will know, the day still bears the record

for the greatest loss suffered by British forces in one day, with 20,000 being killed and 40,000 injured.

We should be particularly proud in Buckden as, of the 454 VC’s awarded to UK born citizens during

World War 1, only 2 were born in what is now Cambridgeshire.

The commemorative paving stone measures 600 mm X 600 mm and is made of York stone. The inten-

tion is that the stone will be laid on the 100th anniversary of the award, i.e. 1st July 2016. Prior to that

date, it is important for residents of Buckden to decide where the stone should be laid and the Parish

Council, who have been given the responsibility for this, wants to know your views. We are also keen to

hear from anyone who might be related to Captain Green.

Suggestions for where the paving stone may be sited are:

1. In the short path that leads to the war memorial outside St Mary’s Church

2. In the paving of the Green memorial on the High St

3. In the pavement outside Coneygarths

4. Any other location

The Parish Council would like to hear from you.

Please let us know which of these, or any other site/s, you think is most suitable. You can do this by e-

mailing the Chair of the Parish Council, Fiona Shirley, at [email protected] , by letter to 48 Vine-

yard Way or on the comments section of the Parish Council website: www.buckdenparishcouncil.org.uk

We would be pleased to receive your suggestions by 31st August 2014.

Fiona Shirley, Chair to Buckden Parish Council

On Tuesday, 4th August 1914 at 11pm, Britain declared war on Germany following its

invasion of Belgium. Soon the fighting produced a stalemate with all sides digging de-fensive trenches from the Belgian coast to the Alps; and with many attacks and counter-attacks these trenches remained until, following massive attrition of its troops and civil-ian starvation, Germany sought an armistice on Monday, 11

th November 1918. These

few words inadequately summarise four years of hell on Earth, a huge death toll, untold misery and grief for millions of families and an upheaval in our social structure which continues to have an impact on us one hundred years on. Buckden and Stirtloe men more than did their bit, although they were a little slow off the mark in the early days when Diddington volunteers flocked to the Colours first, but Buck-den soon caught up in the following months. Buckden’s population in 1911 (and likely similar in 1914) was 995, of whom 482 were male and 254 of those were or became of military age (18-41 years) during the war. The Roll of Honour in St. Mary’s Church records the names of the 96 men who had vol-unteered for service by January 1916 when compulsory conscription was imposed. A further 81 men joined following conscription, making a total of 177 Buckden and Stirtloe men who served in the Great War. Others stayed at home, 59 men being exempted for

essential work or illness and another 18 whose status is unknown at pre-sent. Seventy percent of Buckden’s eligible men enlisted whereas nationwide the figure was around 52%. Not only did Buckden men provide far more men than the na-tional average, they and their families paid a greater price:

Buckden & Stirtloe men killed: 39 (22% of the 177 men serving. National average: 12%).

Buckden & Stirtloe men wounded: 47 (26% of men serv ing. National average: 23%).

Buckden & Stirtloe prisoners of war: 8 (5% of service men. National average: 2%).

The primary reason for this was that the vast majority of Buckden men served in the infantry at the Front, rather than being in the various support units at home or further from the fighting. While most of our 177 servicemen were soldiers, we did have seven in the Royal Navy and five in the Royal Flying Corps (now RAF). Local women also contributed to the war effort, although not in the large numbers sometimes supposed; being a working-class housewife and moth-er in 1914 was an 18-hour-a-day job in itself. This left mainly unmarried women to take the place of the men in the fields, shops, offices and pubs,

while middle-class ladies organised and funded others. Part of the latter in-volved arranging for schoolchildren to collect eggs and blackberries which were shipped in enormous quantities from both Buckden stations to soldiers in hospitals in London, the North and Midlands and to France. Children also collected conkers for a secret purpose which they were never told (they were used in the munitions industry) and joined their mothers in making articles for the men at the Front.

Buckden Towers was home to the Lovat Scouts Regiment from September 1914 until at least August 1915, being based here to provide support against a feared German invasion. The men had such broad Scottish accents, with some speaking Gaelic, that the locals initially believed them to be Russians! Then from before April 1917 until May 1919 the Towers was used a Red Cross convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers, with five of the female nursing staff being from the village. The Towers laundry across the road had already been a Red Cross hospital from September 1914 until August 1916.

Friends of Buckden Towers We all need new friends.

Why not join the Friends of Buckden Towers?

Living in Buckden, we are so fortunate to have a wonderful historic building, Buckden Towers, right here in our community. The site was listed in the Domesday survey of 1086 and, for much of the time since then has been home to the Bishops of Lincoln. Spanning a period of almost 1000 years, the buildings, still in constant use, are largely Tudor and Victorian, with evidence of medieval structures. Much of the extensive ‘Little Park’ has recently been restored and the Knot Garden, or Queen Catherine’s Garden, is a very fine ex-ample of the style of gardens of the Tudor era. The aim of the Friends of Buckden Towers is to assist with the preservation of The Towers and gardens and we have several money-raising events, including the famous Plant Sale, during the year. However, a large proportion of the funds come from the annual membership fee paid by Friends. Our member-ship year starts in September and we ask you to consider joining the Friends of Buckden Tow-ers and helping to preserve this unique site. You will find a membership form overleaf. Finally…………..Guests for the weekend? An outing to organise? A special birthday event to plan? Why not consider a guided tour of The Towers? You can have a tour of The Towers site, with light re-freshments if required, for a modest sum. Please contact Chris Lawrence on 01480 812227 for more details and to book. For more details, see our website: www.fobt.org.uk

There were no great celebrations here when it all ended, we were too war weary. The influenza epidemic reached its peak in Buckden in November and December 1918 bringing further misery; meanwhile families had to wait many months for their loved ones to return, and they were changed men when they got home. The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church subscribed £100 to have the war memorial of grey Cornish granite erected by a local builder and it was unveiled at a simple ceremony on 22

nd April 1920.

Barry Jobling will be giving several illustrated talks and displays

on WW1 and Buckden’s part in it, including at the Buckden Local

History Society on 5th November and at St. Mary’s Church on 15

th

November, also a display there for the service on 3rd

August to

commemorate the centenary. He would like to copy any named

photos you may have of local men and women of the time for in-

clusion in these talks (with credit to the providers); please contact

him on 01480 810556 or at [email protected].

By the time this edition of the Roundabout is printed, I will have left my post as Hall Manager. It has been a pleasure to work at the Hall, alongside the Trustees, and John and Elaine - the other 2 part-time members of staff. Over the last year the Hall has been given a face lift – with internal painting, new blinds and the main hall floor repolished. We have new external signage, and are busy planning the next round of improvements. Our weekly classes go from strength to strength, and our weekends are busy with a variety of parties, celebra-tions and dance evenings. Our website holds details of our classes, history, rates and more, we post on twitter and face book and send out a quarterly newsletter. All in all, the Hall continues to thrive in difficult times. I wish my successor luck, and hope that the Hall contin-

ues as a valuable community asset for the village.

SCHOOL & PRE-SCHOOL NEWS

BUCKDEN PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP Many thanks to everyone who supported our stall at the Buckden Village Festival last month; despite the festival being cut drastically short by torrential rain, we raised nearly £100. This month staff, children and committee members are all taking a well-deserved break! But we are back on Thursday 4th September, and at present limited spaces are still available. Pre-school sessions are mornings 9-12 or 9-1, afternoons 12-3 or 1 -3 or full day sessions 9-3 Monday to Thursday, and Fridays 9-12. For more information you can contact our Chairperson Corrine Emeleus during the summer holidays on the number below, or visit our website: www.buckdenpreschool.co.uk. You can also phone us on the preschool number below in term time to request a prospectus or arrange a visit.

Two important requests before we reopen: Firstly, we must ask anyone passing by the Pre-school balcony not to speak to the children. We love being part of a community and having an outside play space, and naturally the children know many of the villagers walking by. But we teach the children about ‘stranger danger’ and that they should only talk to other people if they’re with their parents or carers. The balcony is part of preschool premises, so as ex-pected by Ofsted we must ensure that our child pro-tection rules are adhered to on the balcony just as they are inside preschool. We realise that ignoring the children if they call out feels unfriendly, but we will be reminding the children of the rules and hopefully they too will remember that they shouldn’t call out to passers-by, even if they know them. Secondly, would you consider becoming a committee member or even Chairperson? Our Chairperson and several committee members in key roles, including Treasurer, will step down at November’s AGM. The Treasurer role can be shared and we also need fund-raisers and someone to liaise with the media. Under charity commission and Pre-School constitution rules, without a Chairperson we will be forced to close. Please contact Corrine for more information.

For more information please vis-it www.buckdenpreschool.co.uk or telephone Michelle (Manager) on 07941 671999 or Corrine Emeleus (Acting Chair) 07929 600309.

BUCKDEN CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL

(Primary Academy Trust)

July 2014 We have now reached the end of another school year – how quickly they pass. These last few weeks have been very busy with some exciting activities. After a false start due to the inclement weather we were fi-nally able to have our sports day. We started with Key Stage 1 closely followed by Key Stage 2 children who had the traditional sports races. We also had parents’ races, the mothers’ race was won by Mrs Linnell and the fathers’ race was won by Mr McCollin. The teachers’ race was won by Miss Lizell. Thank you to all parents and visitors who came along to support the children. The Reception class visited Paxton Pits and had a lovely day searching for mini-beasts. This visit complemented the work they have been doing in the classroom. Our year 5/6 children have performed their play ‘Alice in Wonderland – The Musical’. The Over 60 residents of the village were invited to watch and enjoyed the play followed by cake and tea. The parents also enjoyed the perfor-mances. The last week of term was change for everyone. Dur-ing transition week the children meet, and spend 4 days with their teachers for next year, and we also welcome our new Reception children. The new chil-dren experienced life in school and stayed to have a school dinner. Their week ended with a teddy bears picnic on the school field. Everyone had a good week preparing for next year. We celebrated the chil-dren’s achievements this school year in the school end of year celebration assembly. The children also had an end of term disco organised by the FOBS committee. Our Year 6 children visited their new secondary schools to familiarise themselves with their new rou-tines. This followed a busy week when, after their musical performance, they had their leavers Prom. Thank you to the Year 6 parents - we are very grate-ful to you for giving the children an evening to re-member. The end of year leavers’ celebration as-sembly was also a very fitting finale and an emotional time for pupils, who are leaving Buckden School after 7 years, and parents. We would like to wish the Year 6 children and all our leavers good luck in their new schools. The Buckden School community would like to thank parents and members of the community who have supported the school during the past year. We wish you all a good summer and look forward to seeing you in September at the start of the next school year.

BUCKDEN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB Buckden Junior Football Club is a Charter Standard club whose objectives include the development of football skills of young players to enable them to enjoy participating in Association junior football matches ('Charter Stand-ard' is the official seal of approval from the Football Association for a correctly-run club). BJFC is affiliated to Huntingdonshire FA and arranges and provides facilities for football training and the playing of League and Cup matches. The Club is a non-profit organisation and its fully qualified coaches and managers, plus its controlling body, the Club Committee, are all volunteers. Thus, to help achieve its objectives BJFC conducts fund-raising activities and encourages sponsorship. However, of necessity, it charges players’ parents a registration fee which covers Hunts FA/League registration, liability/personal accident insurance, child welfare practice, kit, equipment, training (including winter training arrangements on synthetic turf), hiring of pitches when required, playing in all League and Cup matches, and trophy presentation at the end of the season. The Club introduced a website www.buckdenjuniorfc.co.uk a few years ago on which can be viewed Club docu-ments and team news and events. Next season, which starts in September, 8 teams are planned as follows: Training Only - U6s (Dribblers) Hunts Mini Soccer League - U7 Eagles, U8 Vultures, U9 Buzzards, U10 Harriers, U10 Condors Hunts Youth League - U13 Hawks, U13 Falcons Buckden JFC Needs Recruits For Next Season! If your offspring (boys and girls) are interested in playing football for the Club next season and would like to join one of our teams please contact the Club Secretary, Bob Crane on 01480 434610. We are looking especially for players for the U10 Condors, U10 Harriers, U13 Falcons and U13 Hawks.

A New Venue for Slimmers in Buckden! Slimming World Consultant Rachel Watson who runs the Buckden group on a Thursday night has recently moved venue and now holds her group at Buckden Primary School. Rachel, who has lost 5 stones with Slimming World and has been a member herself since joining in April 2004, says ‘the hardest part was taking that first step and going to the group but I’m so glad I did, I’m not sure what would have happened if I hadn’t gone that day and the group was so warm and friendly. I just couldn’t believe how much I could eat and lose weight and I never felt like I was on a diet; my new eating habits became a way of life very quickly. I had tried all the diets before joining Slimming World but I always gave up after a few days. With Food Optimising I could eat as much free food as I liked without having to count a single thing! I really looked forward to my weekly class, Image Therapy really helped and inspired me and we always had so much fun in group. Food Optimising fits in so well with my family we all eat together’. In October 2005 Rachel went on to become a Consultant for Slimming World, originally based in the Midlands and has never looked back. Rachel also runs the Monday morning and evening groups in Godmanchester and hav-ing recently celebrated her 9

th year as a Consultant

If you want to join us in our new venue at Buckden Pri-mary School, School Lane, we meet every Thursday night 5.30pm and 7.30pm just come along or for more information on any of Rachel’s groups you can call her on 07940 441 918. Pictured below are Suzanne and Nick Lever who were crowned our Couple of the Year 2014 and have lost 8.5 stones between them. Rachel says ‘Suzanne and Nick are such an inspirational couple, they stay every week and are a great inspiration and support to others in group’.
