2A FB: Rematch Set for RV, Thatcher

By Jose Garciaazpreps365.com

Thatcher proceeded to win its state semifinal game after retiredArizona coaching legend Jesse Parker gave the team a pregamepep talk. But if Thatcher wants to truly be the stuff of legends, then it’ll

have to win its final game. The team in Thatcher’s way of its cham-pionship ambitions is Round Valley, the consensus No. 1 throughoutthe 2A Conference’s season. But Thatcher, which can also claim it’s the best team in 2A in

2016, won’t be in awe of Round Valley, its Saturday championshipopponent at Chaparral High.“This was the main goal from Day 1,” said Round Valley coach

Marcus Bell about getting to the 2A final. “That’s why you put thetime in in the summer in the weight room. That’s all we could ask forwas a chance, and we are here.”What Bell and his top-seeded team didn’t expect at were ques-

tions about the availability of their primary weapon, quarterbackKyron Woolf.Woolf suffered an undisclosed injury during the state quarterfinals

and didn’t play in the semifinals. Round Valley, which outscored its

first three playoff opponents 154-8, has plenty of weapons, butThatcher is a different beast, so Woolf’s mobility, two-way roles andleadership will be needed. The senior signal caller only completed six of nine attempts for

156 yards in a regular season nail-biter against Thatcher. But Woolfalso threw a touchdown and rushed for a team-high 139 yards andthree touchdowns in Round Valley’s 28-21 win against Thatcher onOct. 14.“Yea, he better,” said Bell when asked after Saturday’s 37-8 semi-

final win over Benson if Woolf would play in the final. With six tackles and one of his team’s three interceptions on Oct.

14, Woolf also helped keep Thatcher well under its 43 points pergame average.Round Valley’s defense also had seven sacks in that game.Thatcher also suffered a key injury, but it occurred at the start of

the season, allowing the squad to adjust after losing running backKaleb Mattice, a state championship hurdler, who hasn’t playedsince Week 2. One of the players who stepped up in Mattiece’sabsence was Nathan Lee, who quickly motored his way for a 70-yard rushing touchdown in the semifinals.Besides its loss to 13-0 Round Valley, the only other defeat 11-2

Thatcher suffered was to 3A’s Snowflake, which won 13-12.But that close loss to a very good team in a higher conference

signaled that Thatcher was a 2A contender. The team solidified itsgood standing with an impressive victory over Phoenix Christian, ateam that was averaging 330 rushing yards per game but was limit-ed to 119 in its state quarterfinal 52-6 loss to Thatcher. With Thanksgiving approaching, Thatcher’s defense stuffed

another opponent, No. 2 seed Santa Cruz, when it counted themost in the state semifinals. In that game, Thatcher stoppingarguably the best player in 2A, Santa Cruz’s Devin Neal, three timesnear the end zone, keeping him from scoring a potential game-win-ning touchdown as regulation ended and a two-point point conver-sion in overtime.John Trujillo, who caught a 46-yard touchdown pass against

Santa Cruz, zoomed around right end to grab Neal’s legs, haltingNeal’s attempt to elevate and dive into the end zone as time expiredin regulation. Another player who stepped up on defense wasThatcher starting quarterback Jake Dunlap.Dunlap’s family knows Jesse Parker, and Parker may have given

Dunlap a lesson or two about how to also play safety. From thatposition, Dunlap intercepted a Santa Cruz pass and returned it for a54-yard touchdown. If Thatcher doesn’t see Woolf (47 touchdowns, 3,147 rushing

yards in career), then backup Brian Hill appears ready to direct theoffense. The senior led his team to victory in the semifinals and ranfor a 24-yard touchdown.Round Valley also has 1,000-yard rusher Braden Brown. On

defense, lineman John Stokes tied a season high with 11 tackles inRound Valley’s regular season game against Thatcher.Linebacker Dylan Workman and defensive back Sullivan Udall

are Round Valley’s leading tacklers.

NOTERound Valley’s football program won its first state championship

50 years ago, and members of that team will be in attendance dur-ing the 2A title game on Saturday at Chaparral.Round Valley’s 1966 team will be honored at halftime of the 2A

title game along with Santa Cruz’s 1966 state championship team.Round Valley also won state championships in 1971, 1970, 1979,and 1980, and Thatcher took home championship trophies in 1986,1988, 1998, 2001, 2002, and 2006.

3A FB: Strong Senior Class LeadingThe Way for Sabino, American Leadership

By Jose Garciaazpreps365.com

Before this season started, the senior classes ofSabino and American Leadership could argue confident-ly that they possessed the leadership to guide theirteams to the 3A Conference state championship game. But a handful of other 3A teams also could make the

same case. Sabino and American Leadership were thefinal teams standing, though, with one game left to play. Sabino and American Leadership are battle-tested and

experienced, which should make for a good champi-onship game come Saturday at Chaparral High. Theycan thank each other for preparing them for the 3A final. The squads dueled in a tight battle in Week 2, won by

Sabino 16-13, handing American Leadership its only

loss of the year. But throw out that score, because a lothas changed since their last meeting.American Leadership defeated Sabino despite playing

without its injured starting quarterback, Dallin Edwards. As for Sabino, it began to move Drew Dixon to differentspots to take advantage of his versatility after the Week2 game.Dixon, a University of Arizona commit, is the focal

point of Sabino’s offense, whether he’s lining up at quar-terback, wide receiver or in the backfield.“We have to be aware of where Dixon is at all times,”

said American Leadership coach Rich Edwards duringTuesday’s Media Day event at Famous Dave’s in Mesa. But Dixon isn’t the only senior that makes Sabino go.Helping keep the focus off Dixon is wide receiver

Andrew Carlsen, who had his highest receiving gametotals this season during the playoffs. Carlsen had aseason high 163 receiving yards last week and has 21receptions for 402 yards and four touchdowns inSabino’s three playoff games this season. “(Carlsen) worked really hard in the offseason to get

better,” Dixon said. “He’s a play maker.”Defensively, Sabino is led by another senior standout,

linebacker James Offerman, the team’s leader in tack-les.“(Offerman) never stops,” Dixon said. “He tries to

make every tackle and has a strong work ethic.”Sabino’s senior class has only lost one game in their

high school career and has never lost to an Arizonateam. But there is a junior, quarterback Alex Bell, who also is

a difference maker for Sabino (12-1). The quarterbackgets most of the reps when Dixon (11 TD passes, 2INTs) doesn’t line up behind center and has responded, throwing 18 touchdown passes and just four intercep-tions.Bell was suspended for two games this season for

unspecified reasons, but the time off helped the youngman.“Alex came back a better quarterback,” Dixon said.

“He’s making better reads and matured a lot.”Against American Leadership, Sabino’s threats will

need to protect the football, Sabino coach Jay Camposaid.Campos said that his team also needs to control the

clock. That means that Sabino will have to finish drives, something its failed to do a couple of times during theplayoffs and during its first meeting against AmericanLeadership.

Saturday may mark Campos’ last game as Sabino’ssuccessful coach. The only thing that’s missing for thecoach is a state title. The last time Sabino won a championship was in

1998. Jeff Scurran, who will coach Catalina Foothills inthe 4A Conference final on Saturday, was Sabino’scoach in 1998 and in 1992 and 1990, when Sabino alsowon titles.“If it’s my last game, then playing for a state champi-

onship is what I want to be doing,” Campos said.It didn’t take American Leadership long to play for a

ring. The program is only five years old and is under the

direction of a coach without much coaching experience.Edwards was a home builder for a long time beforeAmerican Leadership’s football program came knockingfour seasons ago.Besides being the “CEO” of the team, Edwards is also

now his school’s athletic director. Edwards played in col-lege as well as for Jesse Parker at Mesa MountainView, where another American Leadership coach, offen-sive coordinator Max Hall, also played.American Leadership went 13-1, 11-2 and 9-2 in its

past three seasons and reached a state semifinal lastyear.“We were disappointed we lost in the semifinals last

year,” Edwards said. “But we have been building towardthis (state championship game.)”Like Sabino, American Leadership also has been

blessed with a strong senior class and excellent coach-ing.Quarterback Dallin Edwards, running back Jermiah

Boyd, tight end Donovan Hannah and outside linebackerFarrell Memmott will play in their final high school gameSaturday for American Leadership. Those senior leaders have stepped up throughout this

season. Boyd was expected to follow his big year lastwith another big campaign this year, and with 1,439rushing yards and team-high 22 touchdowns this seasonhe didn’t disappoint. Boyd and his brother, Bujon, a jun-ior who is second on the team with 12 touchdowns, areFlorida natives but already feel at home in Arizona. The expectations were also high for the 6-foot-7

Hanna, a BYU tight end commit, who is leading his 13-1American Leadership with 952 yards and 10 receivingtouchdowns. Edwards missed some time this year, butcontinued to be a dual threat upon his return. He rushed 21 times for 170 yards in American

Leadership’s physical quarterfinal game againstFlorence and has also passed for seven touchdowns inthe playoffs.

4A Football Championship Preview

By Andy Moralesazpreps365.com

4A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPNo. 1 Saguaro (13-0) vs. No. 6 Catalina Foothills (11-2)University of Phoenix Stadium Saturday, Nov. 26 (10 a.m.)

What can be said about Jeff Scurran that hasn’t been saidbefore? He resurrected another 0-10 program and is back forhis eighth state championship game.Santa Rita was 0-10 in 2006 but Scurran came on board and

he had the Eagles in back-to-back championship games in 2007and 2008. Catalina Foothills went 0-10 in 2012 and Scurran hasthe Falcons in their first final.Every win at Catalina Foothills at this point is uncharted terri-

tory. Heck, even a loss at this point would be a first because thisis the first time the Falcons have played in a state championshipgame involving a football.

JEFF SCURRAN FILEState Championships1990: 4A Sabino, 1992: 4A Sabino, 1998: 4A Sabino

State Runner-ups1997: 4A Sabino, 1999: 5A Sabino, 2008: 4A-II Santa Rita, 2009: 4A-II Santa Rita

Leading the way for the Falcons (11-2) are senior QB RhettRodriguez, Sr. RB Dashiel Pudwill, Sr. receivers Bryon Beckonand Jimmy Stewart, Sr. TE Max Michalczik, Sr. kicker HeathKleindienst and Sr. LB Brandon Smith. Simply, this is a completeteam. Seeded sixth, the Falcons destroyed No. 2 Higley 62-37 in

their semifinal game. That victory came after upsetting No. 3Sunrise Mountain 52-49 in the quarterfinal round. But, thebiggest challenge will be the championship game against No. 1Saguaro next Saturday. The Sabercats have played for a state championship in five

different levels of play and have won in four of them. Saguaro won a D-II title last year; a D-III championship in

2014, 2013 and 2011; a 4A-I championship in 2010, 2008, 2007and 2006 and a 4A championship in 1995. The only loss camein the 5A championship game in 1978. The Sabercats are loaded with NCAA D-I talent at almost

every position and have produced over 6,000 yards of totaloffense. Only four teams have gained more yards in Arizona thisyear and one of those teams was Higley. Higley had almost6,500 yards of offense but the Falcons were able to end theirseason.Anything is possible. No. 4 Salpointe limited Sahuaro to 24 points in the other

semifinal game. That was the lowest total by the Sabercatssince a 20-12 loss to Pinnacle on Sept. 4 of 2015.The Lancers limited the Sabercats passing attack (82 yards)

but they couldn’t stop the rushing game (281 yards and threeTDs). Scurran will have to find a way to build upon what DennisBene did in order to win but it will be a tall task.Jr. QB Max Massingale has 2,173 yards passing with 28 TDs

and Sr. RB Stone Matthews has 1,975 yards rushing with 28TDs. Massingale also has 913 yards rushing with another 12TDs to his name. Sr. Jacob Christofferson leads the team with403 yards receiving and Sr. LB Brandt Casey has 94 tackles.Jason Mohns guided the Sabercats to three straight titles

leading up to this year. Several coaches have completed thattask but very few have won four in a row: Rick Smith ledFlagstaff to four straight championships in the early 1980s andPaul Moro led Blue Ridge to four straight in a decade later. History will be made either way.

5A: Centennial, Williams Field Meet for the First TimeWF Hopes Third Time’s a Charm in Championship Pursuit

By Les Willseyazpreps365.com

A seasoned championship program in Centennial and aprogram wanting to break through as a champion inWilliams Field. That's the matchup for the 2016 5AConference football title.No. 5 seed Centennial (12-1) and its only coach

Richard Taylor, are king of Division II/5A-II/5A football inthe state. Since 2005 the Coyotes have won five titlesand finished runner-up three times. They won the D-Ichampionship last year playing with all the big boys. Thisis their ninth visit to the title game in 12 years. The onlymisses to title-game appearances in that span are 2009,2011 and 2013. Taylor has 281 career wins, 220 atCentennial in 27 seasons. Centennial has won 12 gamesin a row since a season-opening 26-24 loss to DesertEdge, which featured five Coyote turnovers.No. 2 seed Williams Field (13-0) and its only coach

Steve Campbell, is playing for its third title since theschool opened and began playing varsity ball in 2008.The Black Hawks lost in 2010 to Thunderbird in the 4A-IIchampionship in overtime. Their other loss was toSaguaro in the D-III title game in 2014. Williams Field is95-18 under Campbell in nine seasons. This year's Centennial team is not unlike most others.

An inexperienced defense has grown as the season'sprogressed led by defensive end Andrew Nichols, line-backers Marcus Wakeman and Taylor Fiame and second-ary mates Gage Franklin and Isaac Haney. The Coyoteshave allowed the fewest points in 5A - 123 - an averageof 9.5 per game. The offense is run-first led by juniorZidane Thomas. Thomas has become a workhorse andhas piled up 1.888 yards and 18 TDs. Thomas gougedCienega for 336 yards and four TDs in the semis. Four orfive other backs chip in. Junior quarterback RubenBeltran has thrown for 1,498 yards and 14 TDs. TheCoyotes top receiver is Connor Sovacki (36 catches, 354yards, 3 TDs) with tall, physical tight end Nichols an invit-ing target, too.Williams Field also lays out the defensive card as its

forte. The Black Hawks have allowed 147 points, justmore than 10 per game. Their passing game is more pro-lific and dangerous. Sophomore quarterback ZackShepherd has passed for 2,482 yards and 24 TDs. Hehas a pair of 1,000-yard receivers in Justin Stokes and

Max Fine, who have combined for 23 TD receptions.Williams Field relies on speedy Josh Alexander for thebulk of its rushing yardage. Alexander missed a couplegame in mid-October, but is knocking on the door of a1,000-yard season. Shavez Hawkins, Evan Price andJordan Neal also get work in the backfield. The keys to the game: Williams Field's ability to keep

tabs on Zidane Thomas, especially preventing big runs, iscritical as Centennial banks on physical, trench warfare.Williams Field isn't as physical as Centennial, but itspassing game is at least as good as Centennial's seen.Centennial saw only one solid passing team this season -- Pinnacle -- and gave up 255 yards. Shephard, Stokesand Fine are capable of challenging Centennial's passdefense, which works well if Centennial has to respect therun.

Mtn. Pointe-Chandler Rematch Promises to Be BetterChandler Out to Prove Lopsided Loss an Aberration

By Les Willseyazpreps365.com

It's no surprise to see top-seed Mountain Pointe andNo. 2 Chandler playing for the 6A title. The surprise would be the outcome mimicking their

regular-season battle back on Sept. 8 -- a 52-7Mountain Pointe victory. The level Chandler has playedat since that loss and Mountain Pointe's nail-bitingsemifinal win over Red Mountain clearly have many

believing this game will be close, if not a reversal byChandler. That makes the matchup all the more intrigu-ing.The schools have proven over the last four years

(2013-16) they are the cream of the big-school crop. Inthat span they've qualified for the semifinals or bettereach year. And they've each won a title -- MountainPointe in 2013 and Chandler in 2014. No other 6Aschool can say that.Mountain Pointe (13-0) is 89-15 the last eight sea-

sons under coach Norris Vaughan. The Pride have allthe tools of a championship team. They run the balleffectively and can throw when needed. Best of all theythrive on defense with many observe believing it’s thebest defense of this decade. Mountain Pointe hasallowed only 12 points a game. The defensive stand-outs are many -- led by safety Isaiah Palo-Mao, andlinebackers Hodge and Jacob Olsen, strong safetyKenny Churchwell and nose guard Matthew Palo-Mao.Only Isaiah Palo-Mao and Hodge are seniors.Mountain Pointe has navigated injures to top running

back junior Gary Bragg and starting quarterback seniorNoah Grover. Hodge and Delano Salgado havesubbed adequately for Bragg. Hodge has rushed for1,015 yards, 16 TDs and Salgado 730, 6 TDs. Salgadohad a team-high 160 in the semifinal win over RedMountain. Grover returned from his injury against RedMountain and appeared rusty, completing 3 of 8 pass-es for 42 yards. Receivers Jaydon Brooks and IsaiahPola-Mao have turned in big plays as receivers in thepassing game all year, none bigger than Brooks passto Palo-Mao that was the difference in beating RedMountain.Chandler (11-2), 60-16 in Shaun Aguano's six sea-

sons at the helm, was 2-2 after the drubbing it took toMountain Pointe. Since then the Wolves have won ninegames in a row and the only game marginally closewas a 44-35 victory over Perry. Chandler hasoutscored the vanquished in that streak, 511-159.

The only team to shutdown Chandler's offense wasMountain Pointe. Running back TJ Green has runroughshod over opponents all year, more so in theplayoffs. In Chandler's three playoff games, Green hasrushed for 451 yards, 7 TDs and averaging 13 yardsper carry. He's rushed for 1,853 yards and 30 TDs forthe season.Sophomore quarterback Jacob Conover has

unleashed a brilliant season in his first year as starter.Conover has completed 72 percent of his passes total-ing 3,264 yards, 27 TDs and three interceptions. Hetossed two of those picks against Mountain Pointe. Anarray of receivers, led by senior Johnny Johnson III (72receptions for 1,180 yards, 8 TDs) and junior GunnerRomney (55 catches, 1,080 yards, 7 TDs).The keys to the game: Neutralizing the other team's

rushing attack. Chandler must slow Mountain Pointe inthat regard. It didn't happen the first time with MountainPointe rushing for 362 yards and tossing in 180through the air. Bragg had half the rushing total so thattask now falls to Hodge, Salgado and Co. MountainPointe's secondary matches up well with Chandler'sreceiving corps so dictating passing downs figures tobe an edge for Mountain Pointe if it keeps Green andRyan Johnson bottled up.
