Well, here we are folks, the last of the 2013 home and away WB footy and netty. The Phant is getting moist in the loin cloth with the prospect of an exciting finals series just a few drum beats away.Facing plenty of challenges on all fronts (natural and man made), I reckon this year has been a winner for Western Border. And that success and resolve is underlined by the persistent irritation of certain sectors of our extended ‘family community’ taking cheap hits, albeit with precious little lead in the pencil. So who were the stars from Round 14? Well, when conditions are at their worst, the very best stand tall. Just reading the names from last week’s Top of the Pops-Brad Wilson, Brett O’Neil, David Nulty…..say no more.
ROUND 15 PREVIEWS
MILLICENT V CASTERTONIn baseball parlance, a batting hit rate of 1 from 14 would probably confine you to the dugout for the rest of the season. For the Saints, they have one last chance in front of their loyal home crowd to show they are better than how the season score card reads. On face value, Casterton look settled in the Top Four. But Minnesota Fats ain’t loading the cue stick in the rack just yet. ‘Squid’ Haggett is a very much underrated footballer by many, but he is not undervalued by the ol’ Phant. His clash with Cat Adam McKenzie should be a highlight, and what about the prospect of Agnew and Ayton going toe to toe.Casterton by 3 points
EAST V NORTHLast time these two met under night skies the Doggies almost produced an upset.Last week they produced an upset of a different kind- their members and supporters were very upset indeed, from their heads down to their private bits.East have been the great enigma of 2013. Their best is slick and energetic, their worst is lethargic, and undisciplined. The Doggies need to prick their ears up and come out barking. Leaders like Balshaw, Povey, Anderson, Clark etc need to show the pups where the lamb shanks are buried. But North have played smart footy all year, and me thinks their consistent form line is set to continue.North by 34 points
FROM THE JUNGLE
SOUTH V WESTWestie ‘A Team’ members Wilson and Holmes led the demolition job against East, and they will need to be up and about again this week. Looking forward to the ‘head to head’ of the best two emerging young ruckman in the Limestone Coast, Roo McElroy up against Jumpin’ Jak Ryan. Will be interesting to see if coach Ransom uses his trump card Wenman to try and win the game in attack, or to try and shut down the likes of potential opposition match winners Cordy and Exelby in the back bit.West have got credentials, but the overall balance and flexibility in the Ds line up is better. South by 21 points
WORDS OF WISDOM“Lady who goes camping must beware of evil intent.”
EDITOR’S NOTE: Thanks to all the club Western contributors for a job well done this year. To all players, officials and supporters exiting the competition this week, thanks for your contribution to a successful home and away series. Hope to catch you during the finals.
‘Till next week...

Who can become an umpire?
Almost anyone can become an umpire. Old or young, male or female, it doesn’t matter. Women are making significant steps in the higher levels of the game and are now common place at local levels.
Have an active involvement in football
If you take an interest in the game of football, umpiring can be the perfect way to make that interest effective. You can be involved in how a game is handled and have an input into administering the rules of the sport.
Be part of a team
In any given match of football there can be as many as 9 umpires on the field. This provides a team environment with everyone working together to give their overall best. Within any umpiring association there are coaches and mentors whose role is to improve all umpires’ performances in the team environment. Umpiring groups are the same as any football club or other special interest group.
Increase your social scene
They are made up of many interesting people from many varied backgrounds. Getting involved with your local panel or association is a terrific way to meet new people and experience a different side of life.
Keep yourself fit
All umpiring groups have a structured fitness program. You can keep yourself in tip-top condition whilst having fun with others.
Develop your personal skills
Umpiring can improve your confidence and help you to make quick decisions whilst under pressure. Developing your communication within a team environment is also an added benefit of becoming an umpire.
Climb the career ladder to the top!
If you are a fit, dedicated and hard-working individual there is a clearly defined career ladder with ample opportunities for you to reach the top. If you show promise at country or local level, you may be invited to join the SANFL Umpiring Academy. From here there will be opportunities to improve and excel throughout an exciting career at the elite levels.
Earn some extra cash
All umpires get paid. Payments begin at about $20 and increase as your level increases with the top umpires in the AFL being able to earn more than $90 000 in a year. Not bad for a part time interest.
Have fun!
The most important thing to remember is to make sure you enjoy umpiring and all that it offers. You can meet friends, improve your fitness and your skills and experience a whole new, fantastic world within footy. Remember, there is no better place from which to watch a game of football.
For further info please contact the WBFL Office on 08 8724 7006 or email [email protected]

Thanks to everyone for supporting the Movie Night and the August 17 gate raffle – along with the Krispy Kremes, your efforts with assisting the club in fundraising has been much appreciated. Well, for many of our teams today is the final hit out and disappointingly for the 12Bs their final game was cancelled so they have already packed their dresses and sneakers away for another off season but the efforts of Dani and Alyce in developing the club’s youngest players has been much appreciated. I know all the girls have had a great time and hopefully not only learnt alot but will remember it as they return next season to improve even more as players and club members. The 13 and under and A and B grade (fingers crossed) will be representing the club in finals so stay tuned for the when and where and support the teams, as well as the A and B grade and under 15 football teams. It would be great if as many as possible could be at the club for award presentations and teas tonight and if you could also mark in your diary, Friday, September 6 for junior (12s, 13s and 15s) presentation night and Friday, October 18 for senior presentation night.

With strong winds and driving rain, it was going to be a hard slog for any team out on the field last weekend against Millicent. The U15 boys copped it first, impacting on their ability to hold on to the lead. After leading at the final break, the lads were unable to get a score in the last quarter going down by 33 points. The U17 had slightly better conditions, dominating the young Saints. Our boys took every opportunity running out winners by 103 points. The Reserves were hunting for a win after 5 straight losses and came out with determination holding Millicent to just 2 goals for the game. The 54 point victory coming after a long time between drinks. The heavens opened up again at the start of the Seniors but it did not stop either side from scoring, South holding a 14 point lead into the first break. The second quarter was all South, Millicent failing to score giving us a commanding 5 goal lead going into the main break. We lost some momentum in the third, but our defence held their ground and limited the damage to just two behinds. Into the final quarter, Millicent just could not score, allowing South to run out winners by 44 points. 2 goals each to Enderl, Bryant and O’Neil, with O’Neil and Bryant putting in best on field performances. We welcome West Gambier to our club for the first time this year for a great match after last weeks huge victory over East. Go Demons!

Well here we are at the final round for 2013. Our last home game was played in real winter conditions with only the A and A res flying the flag for us. A highlight was watching the little U12 girls early in the day, who have shown a vast improvement since the first time they played East only losing by 3. Our two coaches Fiona and Julie have done a fabulous job with this bunch of little champions – and I think that they are both so proud of where these girls are going. Last week we again celebrated a few milestones – Tracey Cowie from C Gr and Hannah Childs from the B’s both playing their 50th game. Another big milestone was Dee Watson playing game number 300. Dee is currently playing coach in the C’s and has played with West from junior grades, as well as coaching, committee, vice president, best and fairest winner and premiership player. Well done Dee. We also congratulate 2 B gr girls – Chloe and Sally – on their impending arrivals early next year with one of you being busier than the other !! Today we travel over to South Gambier. Good luck everybody, especially our 12 and 13’s who are playing their last games. Thanks to all the players and parents of these girls for their commitments this season. Our 17 and 15’s will hopefully live to fight another day, and we have all our senior teams sitting in the four, heading into finals. Also a huge thanks to all our sign sponsors and weekly award donors. Your support is greatly appreciated. Best players from last week: A Gr-Brit and Emily, A Res-Melissa and Kahli, B Gr-Kaz and Sammi, C Gr- Dee and Elysha, 17s’-Maddi and Jacquie, 15’s-Georgia’s H and F, 13’s- Emilie and Maggie and 12’s – Emmy and Katie
Well, well, well!! Does that result send a scare through the other clubs or is there nothing to read in it: was the weather the difference? Did one side have too many outs? What about this week? Which side will rest players? Who will play like they have nothing to lose? In a few hours we will know the answer to these questions and as to where the finals will be played. Hopefully the weather takes a turn for the better so it fills like finals time. Best players Brad Wilson, Roo McElroy, Tommy Holmes, Nathan Lewis, Steve Wenman, Speedy Waugh and Dobes. Congratulations to Roo for winning the Phil Muhovics medal. A good reward for all the on field efforts for the whole year. Reserves were pushed aside by a side that will play in a grand final. As some young guys come through to senior ranks this will ultimately help the reserves next year. Best Players Clayton McKinnon, Tommy King, Trav Lockwood, Wizz Weyers, Chrisso Milich, Nathan Koopman. U17’s turned around the result from last time so good on them!! A big win this week is a must to prepare for finals and get in the right head space. Best players A Gibbs, R Rutkowski, L Bradley-Brown, A Cram, and G Ha. U15’s were soundly beaten by the premiership favourites. With enough luck though and a solid win these lads can still play finals. Best players J Lock, K Giddings, N Tilley, B Aberle, B Wagstaffe, J Stratman.

Megan started playing in 1999 in the Clubs 15&U grade and played here for 2 seasons before progressing into the senior ranks of her netball career. taking a short break from netball Megan came back to the club in 2004 and has played every year since as one of the back bones of East Gambier’s C Grade team. Megan has been a premiership player in C Grade along with winner last years Club Best & Fairest. Megan is always helping out within her Club, umpiring, social functions and has also served as
a committee member. Megan has had an outstanding 200 games with her beloved East Gambier Netball Club and we are very proud and honoured to have in our Club. We wish Megan all the very best and hope that her C Grade can finish the season off for her and bring home another Premiership.
EAST GAMBIER FNC MILESTONES - Megan Brodie
Megan Brodie’s 200th game for East Gambier Netball Club.
The 2013 season is coming to a close, with tomorrow seeing the culmination of the year. For a change the league is running the Under 12A Lightning Carnival in conjunction with the finals series. This provides our younger, up and coming players the opportunity to experience finals atmosphere prior to commencing their own premiership campaign next year. After each team had played two round robin games, both Millicent and South Gambier were undefeated and earned their passage into the final tomorrows. This should prove to be a great exhibition of junior football as both teams are loaded with talent.
In the Under 14s, there were some very hard fought games in the first round of the finals last week. In at times, what can only be described as gale force winds, North was able to prevail over South by 16 points and East despatched West by 21 points. This paves the way for North to tackle East for the ultimate prize in football – the ever elusive premiership cup. East has come out on top in the four games contested during the minor round, so will go into the game as favourites. However, the Tigers have been improving throughout the season, and I see this as a very close contest.
We also have the pleasure of welcoming the South East Female Football League to kick off our day. This league is new to our area and provides an opportunity for more people to participate in football – and that can only be a good thing.
During the afternoon we will take time to recognise the individual award winners in the Under 14s with the presentation of our Best and Fairest who will receive the Max Young Medal. The Player of the Year, as voted by the league coaches and Leading Goal Kicker will also be named.
So it is good luck to all players tomorrow. I hope you enjoy the experience.

Last week we travelled to South, where we played in wet, windy and cold conditions. It really was a horrible day to be outside playing netball. We had a fairly successful day on the courts, with only losing 3 grades for the day. Our U/12s once again proved that they are very talented players and were too strong for their opposition. The U/13s lost in their last minor round game but will be looking forward to a week off before starting finals. Both the U/15s and U/17s fought hard in terrible conditions to record a win. Unfortunately the B & C grade girls were unable get over the line hopefully their last game for the season will bring them some success. The A Res & A graders both had convincing wins and are in good form for the finals race. This week is ladies day in the clubrooms after the completion of all netball games. We would like to invite all ladies back to the club and the Casterton girls to enjoy the afternoon with us. Good luck to all grades today. GO SAINTS!
After being criticized over previous sayings I thought I would end the season with some hard hitting facts about football. So this new WBFL format of 6 sides, has it worked? Clearly for us it’s a big fat no! With 7 wins from our 4 side’s 55 games, where are we at? And by no means am I being critical of MFNC coaches, players or committees because I know how hard they all work. The player numbers are just not there. Let’s deal with the facts, 1 win this year in the seniors, and I read in the paper “Saints season of hell continues”. 29 years since a premiership, so do we put up with it and hope that a bus load of footballers are suddenly going to appear at McLaughlin Park? The Vics got out and this “whoopee do” new WBFL was going to form a new side in Mt Gambier? That’s gone a bit quiet! If you can suddenly grab 100 footballers from thin air send 40 our way please. Do we believe that Duldig, Tilley, Haggett, Hales, Robbins and co will play til they are 40 and Nitschke, Denton, Grosser, Grimes, Duncan, Willis and Rigney, til 50? What are our options? Do we seriously look at joining the MSE? I hear that currently the issues at most juniors meetings are generally decided before the meeting starts? I guess 1 versus 4 is going to be hard to win! Will the seniors resonate to this? Everyone thought that with less travel this year we may get some MSE players and it just hasn’t happened, will it happen if we join the MSE? At the end of the day what are our options and what’s best for the MFNC? Neil Brown

Today we are welcomed to Millicent and all ladies are invited to join in the Saints Ladies Day as we remember and support all in the battle against breast cancer. Feel free to pop in during the afternoon. As the curtain comes down on the home and away series The Cats are on the verge of an exciting and great time. How fantastic to be challenging finals fever in five netball and four football matchups! Congratulations to our Presidents Greg and Judith and their executives. Gratitude to the dedication of time and energy from the coaching panels, support crews umpires and all who make the wheels turn. To all players who through the wintery conditions have trained and played proudly representing our Club and Community: ‘A journey of a million miles takes one step.’ Dare to dream ! Dare to DO! As our A grade netballers wind up their season today we acknowledge their hard work with Trictia. They have thrilled with their play and whilst fierce competitors who may be disappointed not to be there in September need to acknowledge their wins, and tight clashes at the highest level of W/B. You can hold your heads high as your team aspirations and play have been a fine example. To our 12u kittens we buzz with anticipation at your future as you learning curve and progress with Leanne has been monumental. Special thanks to all our weekly sponsors and the Community who are generous and loyal to the CFNC. We wish all a thrilling and injury free finals series. Go Cats!
The good news for the Casterton Football Netball Club is that currently all teams are in the four. What an improvement and a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to all coaching staff and players. All teams were very competitive against a very strong opposition. Well done to those boys from the under 15 and 17 sides that played senior football. Under 15: Goal Kickers: J. Gibbs , B. Millard Best Players: C. McCombe, J. Sheppard, B. Robinson, J. Gibbs, W. Kerr, B. Millard Under 17 Goal Kickers: B. Gill 2, S. Diegmann Best Players: I. Forbes, D. Wombwell, C. Zippel, J. Carlin, C. Jarrad, K. Zippel. Reserves Goal Kickers: R. Smith , J. Killey , R. Killey Best Players: T. Logan, P. Larkins, J. Killey, R. Killey, Z. Cleary, A. Meyer. Adam Mckenzie led the way for the seniors, he certainly is the complete package as a footballer athletic, quick and skilful and like coach Ayton can play a variety of positions. These men will be the keys once we enter finals. Goal Kickers: A. McKenzie 3, A. Cleary T. Clode Best Players: A. McKenzie, D. Ayton, B. Currie, M. Cowland, M. Jarrad, K. Carlin. Good luck this week

The last round of the season is here so let’s go off with a bang as we take on North under lights! The under 12’s teams will both be hoping for a victory. The improvement shown over the year is a credit to the coaches, well done. After the 13s had a fantastic win against West last week, they will be hoping to beat second position North today. The under 15s and 17s have been so consistent throughout the season, both with solid wins last week, today will be a chance to prove why they are both ladder leaders. The C grade had a close encounter last week, a true test come finals. Treat today like a final and show North why you are a power team. B grade last week showed last years premiers they mean business and it should be no different today against North. A res went from a high getting their first win against South to a tough defeat against a strong west side. Good luck today go in hard and try to finish on a high. A grade will be looking for a win to finish the season, but it won’t come easy. Give it everything you have girls! Huge milestones were achieved against south the other week. Congratulations Megan Brodie from C grade who reached here 200th game and Tori Kitschke and Tenille Gray both from under 15s who played their 100th game. Fantastic effort ladies. I would like to wish all teams playing in the finals the best of luck. Lets fight til the final whistle and bring back to the kennel the flag! Bo Richards
Congratulations to Trevor Younghusband on his induction into East Gambiers Hall Of Fame on the weekend past. Trevors decorated career has been detailed many times over but the respect he has earned from teammates and players alike can be quantified by the many well wishers at the club on Sunday. Also on Saturday night the club had its major fundraising auction and we would like to thank all involved for what was a very good night. Saturdays games began with the under 15’s recording a good win. Best players were Todd Lockwood, Brad Rathjen, Scott Brooksby, Giancarlo Cooper, Fraser Lynch and Connor Twomey. The under 17’s were outclassed on the day. Best players were Jack Dawe, Riley Janeway, Nick Walters, Mitchell Gray and Tyson Gordon. The reserves had a win to prepare themselves for their final campaign. Best players were Brad Creek, Joe Case, Ben Creek, Blake Lynch, Flynn Balshaw and Lachie Stanniford. The seniors will be looking to redeem themselves after a poor outing. Best players were Anthony Wilson, Shem Balshaw and Toby Case. This week we host North under lights. See you at the kennel!

Can’t believe we have come to the end of the round robin matches. Well done to all who took part last week in extreme cold wet and wintry conditions. As per the usual the under 15s led the way and had a fantastic win against their Casterton opponents start-ing a good trend for the day. Best were Close, Brookes, Baker, Nankivell, Black, Everard. The under 17s had a hard slog but came home with the chocolates. The boys must keep up their intensity in these extremely important weeks to follow. Best Pasquazzi, Bruhn, S.Kenny, Hunter, D.Kenny, Mansell. The reserves have really put some great passages of footy together this year, this group are really focused on the job at hand. Best Sam Whelan making the most of the goat tracks provided for him, Chris Hatt, Jamie Yeates, Matty Hensel, Glen Soper, Kev Opperman. The seniors did what they needed to do and came away with some very well earned points. Best were Big Nults, The smiling assassin Timmy Mcinerney, The gnarly Leigh Symons, Callum Hudson, Michael Quirk, Nick Mcinerney. Today we venture across town to the Kennel in what always is a spirited hard fought contest between two proud clubs. Everyone must bring there A game and leave the ground with absolutely nothing left in the tank. C’mon Tiges Leave nothing behind. Richard Copeland.

Geographically a catchment is an area of land that drains to a single low point such as
a gully, creek or river.A large catchment may be made up of a series of smaller sub-catchments and these are
made up of soil, water, air and vegetation. Together theses elements support life and
make up an ecosystem that within it has cycling of nutrients and other elements. Each
component is linked, so when one changes it has an effect on the other elements.
What is Integrated Catchment Management?
Integrated Catchment Management is a coordinated approach to the management of
natural resources. It is the integration of land, water, vegetation and other biological
resources for use in a sustainable, balanced way. ICM draws together all members of
the community to effectively manage the catchment in an integrated and holistic way.
ICM fosters joint action by all sectors of the community in an effort to co-ordinate the
problems and solutions within a catchment.Catchment Strategy – The Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Regional Catchment Strategy will be
built into a catchment management plan. The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative defines ICM as “a process through which people can
develop a vision, agree on shared values and behaviors, make informed decision and
act together to manage the natural resources of their catchment”.
This could be a commitment by the community and agencies of the catchment where
the overall aim could be that while addressing stream flows and stream health, to halt
the increase of salt and silt discharging from Fiery Creek and Salt Creeks and to reduce
overall salinity and silting in Lake Bolac. The adoption of the ICM approach is increasingly regarded as the most effective way
of dealing with environmental issues. ICM takes a ‘whole of systems’ approach and
avoids dealing with issues in isolation. It also recognizes the important role played by the
community in managing natural resources and advantages, such as increased mutual
understanding and effectiveness that results from a genuine partnership between
community and government.

In The PoolThe Swimmers compete
in soaring temperatures
at the House Swimming
Carnival. The skies were bright blue as the colourful
procession of red, blue, yellow and green
made its way noisily to the pool. The
chanting had begun already and the scene
was set for a day of heated competition
in the water. Mr Grigg was looking tense
as students entered the grounds and the
other houses turned their attention to
breaking, finally, Laidlaw’s record of too
many successive victories at the House
Swimming Carnival.
The day began with the diving events.
The standard continues to improve,
and it reflects the efforts Mrs Horne
has put into training the competitors.
This year the Diving cup was won
by Berry. As the ropes returned to
the pool to signal the beginning of
the races, the weather was growing
steadily hotter. Eager groups of
students retreated to the shade of the
‘tents’ and the staff performing duties
as judges and timekeepers looked
increasingly uncomfortable. Nothing,
however, seemed to take away from
the spirit of the day! The Year 12 cheer
squads excelled themselves and it
was not surprising that many had lost
their voices by the time the last event
had been swum.
The scores were close all day and
there were some amazing individual
efforts. Age group championships
were awarded to Anastasia Hamill,
Mitchell Godfrey Smith, Nina
Wootton, Jared Rieger, Robyn Sleigh,
Conrad Hamill, Anna Brown, Tom
Nolan and Jarrod Simons, Anna
Burger, Rodney Evans, Brigid
Godfrey Smith and Drew Dreary. As
the last pennant was presented, the
crowds gathered under the shade of
the trees grew quiet. Would Laidlaw
finally be vanquished? Their girls
performed so well that the blue house
was announced as quite a comfortable
winner of the Girls’ Aggregate. What
could the boys do? Young House
emerged victorious in the Boys’.
Aggregate and the pressure mounted –
but to no avail. Laidlaw once again held
the trophy for the Grand Aggregate
high!
It was again a most enjoyable and
smoothly run day. Miss Waldron
and the Physical Education staff had
worked tirelessly to make it a great
success!
Many successes at the
GSSSA Carnival.Only seven days later, a large team
of our most successful swimmers
returned to the Hamilton Pool to
compete against the region’s schools
in the GSSSA Carnival. Once again
the spirit and enthusiasm of the
squad was evident as the day began
with the diving. Amanda Horne,
Declan Murphy and Anna Burger
each won their events and put us in
strong position early in the day. The
freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke,
butterfly and medley races followed
and more victories were recorded
as Mitchell Godfrey Smith, Samuel
Winter-Cooke, Jandre Slabbert,
Rodney Evans, Megan McIntosh,
Alice Langley, Jack Baring, Jared
Rieger, Brigid Godfrey Smith and
Drew Deary all touched the wall first
in their respective events. Our relay
teams also performed very well.
At the end of the day, our Swimming
Captains, Brigid Godfrey Smith and
Fergus Harpley, proudly accepted the
trophies for the Diving and the Boys’
Aggregate. We came second in the
Grand Aggregate. Collandrian 20071
Forty six swimmers
sompete in the city at
the ICCES Carnival. The ICCES swimming was held at
Nunawading on the 14th of March this year.
A reasonably large team of 46 swimmers
took the long journey to Nunawading to
compete. This was a great opportunity
for all of our swimmers to compete
against much bigger schools and many
state representatives.
As our team quickly found out, the
standard was quite amazing at this
carnival but they certainly held their
heads high. There were a number of very
good results with the highlight being
David Andrivon’s second in the year 9
freestyle C. There were also some very
pleasing third placings for the following
students, Nina Wooton - year 7 freestyle
C, Tess Upstill - year 9 freestyle C, Brigid
Godfrey Smith - year 12 breaststroke,
Georgie Upton - year 8 freestyle D, Will
Collins - year 9 freestyle D and the Year
9 freestyle relay consisting of Conrad
Hamill, Jandre Slabbert, Will Collins and
David Andrivon.
The team arrived home weary but satisfied
with their efforts and appreciative of the
work done by Miss Waldron in training
the competitors and organising the trip.
