The HERTS 10K 2015

Thank you for entering the HERTS 10K, Rennie Grove HospiceCare’s flagship fundraiser, which celebrates its tenth anniversary!

Last year, we passed the milestone of raising £1 million from thisevent, helping us to care for more patients with life-limiting illnesses.As the demand for our care is predicted to rise steeply, fundraisingfrom events like this will be even more vital so that we can continueto support local families.

Through a range of services provided both at Grove House and in patients’ homes, we give people the choice to stay at homesurrounded by their families and friends.

We rely on the generosity of people like you and the support of the local community to raise more than 85% of the £6.7 million itcosts to run our service every year, and every penny of sponsorshipyou raise will help us to carry on caring into the future.

This information booklet will tell you everything you need to know about the Herts 10K. Please read it carefully as it containsimportant safety information.

Dear HERTS 10K participant,

Thank you for signing up for the Herts 10K.It’s a brilliant event that I have taken part inmyself and I know how good it felt to beraising money to help local families. I’mparticularly aware of the difference yoursponsorship money will make as my familyhas benefitted greatly from Rennie Grove’sservices over recent years, and I don’t knowwhat we would have done without them. In November 2007, I was diagnosed withprostate cancer. Then, sadly, the followingSeptember, my wife Dilys was diagnosedwith colon cancer.

It all came as quite a shock and it left mefeeling very depressed, but the charity’sHospice at Home nurses really helped usboth. Rennie Grove offers somethingunique: not only can their nurses providehands-on care, but they also have just thatbit more time than the NHS nurses whichmeant that I could discuss all my concernsface-to-face. This was immensely reassuringat what was quite a frightening time.

Dilys and I both also attended the DayHospice at Grove House during 2008 and2009. I was initially apprehensive aboutgoing along as a patient because, despitemy own diagnosis, I had been the onecaring for Dilys and I wasn’t sure I could beon the other side of things, but I quicklychanged that view. The staff and volunteerswere fantastic; they are so professional yetwarm and the care is so well-delivered. I feltsafe and looked after but never fussed over.

Dilys sadly died in October 2009 at the ageof 64, but I have continued to be cared forby the charity. At the moment I’m stableagain - not cured or in remission - but ableto get on with life. I was initially given aprognosis of two to three years back in 2007- and here I am eight years later!

We are so fortunate to have Rennie Grovein this area. The way the Hospice at Home

nurses care for you and enable you to be comfortable at home is just amazing. That,coupled with the services available at GroveHouse, has just helped me so much. I feel sograteful to the charity for all that it does.

Every penny that you raise in sponsorshipwill help ensure that this amazing supportcontinues to be available for local familieswhen they need it most. I can’t stress toomuch how important this is and how muchit will be appreciated by patients now andin the future. I would like to thank you allpersonally for all your efforts to raisesponsorship and to wish you well for theday. I know you will have a great time.

Richard has taken part in variousfundraisers over the years to supportRennie Grove, including completingthe HERTS 10K twice: he walked thecourse with his son Tim in 2008,raising £1,973 and daughter Georgiein 2012, raising £1,270. The familyhad been due to take part in 2009,but Dilys was very unwell and diedjust a few days after the event. Theystill raised £1,255 in sponsorship.

Important information

To help you have an enjoyable and memorable day, pleaseread the following carefully:

• Entrants must be 12 years or over on the day of the event, 11 October 2015.

• The 2015 HERTS 10K begins and ends at Rothamsted Researchin Harpenden, AL5 2QJ and starts at 10am. Please aim to arrive by 9am to make sure you are in your pen on time. The raceheadquarters will be located in the marquee. Directions to therace site can be found at www.herts10k.com

• Your race chip can be found attached to your race number. Please see instructions on how to attach it to your shoe on page 7. Don’t forget your timing chip. If you don’t have your chip, you will not get a timed result.

• There is NO parking at Rothamsted Research. Parking is availableat Harpenden Railway Station. The station is allowing all HERTS10k runners to park free of charge – please display your parkingpermit on the widescreen of your car (this can be downloadedfrom the Herts 10k website). Please allow 15 minutes walkingtime from the station to get to the start line. We will not allow any drop offs or pick ups at Rothamsted Research.

• There are no changing facilities at the race venue, so please arrive in your running kit.

• There will be a bag drop area, though any items are left at the owner’s risk. Please bring a bag with you if you have car keys. Again keys are left at the owner’s risk.

• Toilets will be situated close to the START/FINISH line.

• Refreshments will be available at the START/FINISH line.

• Your race number must be worn pinned to the front of your race t-shirt, underneath the HERTS 10K logo. Any competitor not wearing a race number will be disqualified. For your own safety, and in case of emergency, please complete the medical information on the back of your number prior to running.

• Supporters are welcome on the day, so please encourage your friends and family to come along.

• Please wear your HERTS 10K t-shirt onrace day. This helps create a great feeling ofunity for the run and the hospice.

• There will be two water stations – one atthe 4.5km point and one just past the 7kmpoint.

• Water and snacks will be given out at theend of the race. Massage is also available.

• All finishers will receive a race medal.

• Race cups will be awarded to the first three male and female runners crossing the finish line.

• Race results will be available on the day and online the following day at www.herts10k.com

Fundraising tips

There are so many easy and fun ways to raise sponsorship, here are a few tips to get you started:

• Set up an online fundraising page. Personalise your page – tell people how andwhy you are raising money for Rennie Grove. Upload photos and give updates onyour training.

• Ask your family members to pledge first. If they are generous this should set astandard for people to follow.

• Ensure sponsors read the gift aid statement, include their full address and tick the box if they are eligible to do so. Rennie Grove will receive an extra 25p forevery pound raised.

• Double your sponsorship money – ask your employer if they have a matchedgiving scheme you could use.

• Include the link to your fundraising page in your e-signature at the bottom ofyour emails.

• Increase your fundraising by organising a fun event and asking friends to pay anentrance fee. Here are some of our favourites – film night, bbq, cocktail eveningand quiz night.
