EARTHS ROTATION AND REVOLUTION
Name: Shannon McLeodDate Submitted: August 11, 2014ID: B.Ed. 3750
The spinning motion of an object on its axis
WHAT IS ROTATION?
Tops, Ballerinas, Figure skaters, cyclones, Tornadoes, a merry-go-round, Earth
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THINGS THAT ROTATE?
The movement of the earth on its axis over a 24 hour period.
The speed of rotation 24,855 miles/24 hr or 1,038 miles/hr
WHAT IS EARTH’S ROTATION?
Day and Night.◦ As the earth rotates on the axis one half faces the
sun, this half experiences day while the other half experiences night.
RESULTS OF ROTATION
High and Low tides. This occurs when the earth spins and the sun and the
moon pull it. One force is usually stronger than the other.
Wind speed and Direction Wind on earth comes from different direction
(North, South, East and West).
Different places would get stronger surge of wind as a result of the earths speed of rotation.
The movement of an object around another object
WHAT IS REVOLUTION?
This is the movement of the earth around the sun.
It takes 365 ¼ days (one year)
The speed of earth’s revolution is about 18 miles per second.
Earth revolves around the sun in a slightly eccentric elliptical orbit or path once a year
WHAT IS THE EARTHS REVOLUTION?
Every second, that you sit in this classroom, the Earth's orbital motion carries you about 18 miles through space.
FUN FACT
Seasonal variations (varying lengths of day and night).
Summer, Winter, Autumn and Spring. Solstices and Equinoxes
RESULTS OF THE EARTH’S REVOLUTION
The “solstice” is the day of the year when sunlight is furthest north or south of the equator
Our summer solstice occurs on June 21st, the first day of summer.
Our winter solstice occurs on December 21st, the first day of winter
SOLSTICES
NORTHERN SUMMER SOLSTICE
SOUTHERN SUMMER SOLSTICE
The “equinox” occurs twice a year when the sun is directly overhead at the equator
On the equinox, the hours of daylight equals the hours of darkness.
Seasons in the northern & southern hemispheres are opposite
EQUINOX
Our vernal equinox occurs around March 21st, the first day of spring
Our autumnal equinox occurs around September 21st, the first day of fall
EQUINOXES
What is the difference between rotation and revolution?
Give me an example of something that revolves, and something that rotates.
What type of movement causes night and day?
What type of movement causes the change of seasons?
QUESTIONS
Rotation occurs when an object spins around an axis.
Revolution occurs when an object spins around another object
What is the difference between rotation and revolution?
Give me an example of something that revolves, and something that rotates.
Revolving
Rotating
The Earth’s rotation
What type of movement causes night and day?
The Earth’s revolution- the angle of the sun, and the length of the day
What type of movement causes the change of seasons?
