Charity Cricket Match

The Witta/ Maleny area has salready seen a local play for Australia in test cricket - that be-ing Otto Ernest Nothling. For those who don’t know, (a good trivia question) Otto displaced Sir Don Bradman in 1928 to play for Australia against England at that year’s Sydney Test. Some of his family descendents still reside in the Maleny area.More importantly though, on September 18th we will see if there could be any other crick-eting contenders who have the talents to play for Australia when the Magnifi cent Maleny Maulers, an eccentric bunch of colourful locals v Andrew Powell’s Celeb-rity Eleven, a very shakey coali-tion of state and local politicians. This also will be a great oppor-tunity to let a few head-hunters go at a few of our pollies (all in the spirit of the game). This is bound to become a match of “extreme sport”.The match starts at 9.30a.m. at the Orb Cork Oval in the Maleny Show Grounds. There will be a bar and food operating. All funds raised go towards the Pyjama Foundation and the M.S.A.R.C. Inc.

The Maleny Rotary Club-backed new musical comedy Up the Tiber Without a Toga, opening at the Caloundra Events Centre on Octo-ber 15th, is really attracting a lot of interest. At their sausage sizzle in Cooke Park last week-end, Rotarians handed out fl yers and even dressed for the occasion - with President Rick Vickers looking very comfort-able in his toga! You may have noticed a number of stories about “The Friends of Eb-enezer” who are sending money to help orphans in Livingstone. You might ask why! In Maleny there is a very dedicated group whose members raise funds to help these innocent children who should have no hope and no future, but with support they do have hope and a future. It all started when I was ap-proached to help publicise a dance at North Maleny that was raising funds to go towards the project. I started to read about the work car-ried out by these volunteers and

was impressed by their dedi-cation.The group tries to send money to the Ebenezer Childcare Trust in Livingstone monthly (if they have it). They send money in US$1,500.00 lots in an effort to reduce the fees on the transfer of funds. They also have to keep enough money in their ANZ Bank account in Maleny so they can send money every 3 months to Rotary Australia World Com-munity Service for the people

who want tax receipts. R.A.W.C.S. completes the admin-istration and issue the relevant tax receipts which we forward to donors.R.A.W.C.S. then send the money to a special account in Livingstone jointly administered by Mrs Ranji Chara the Director of the Enenezer Home in Livingstone and the local Rotary clubs in Livingstone. In Livingstone the School has a Trust Account, a Building Account and the joint Ebenezer/Rotary Ac-count from which the various parts of the project receives the relevant funding.Ebenezer now has a new babies home almost ready to be able to take in 20 babies. So a Matron, a nurse and other staff will have to be found and money for local wages found for them. There is never enough money, but many babies for whom to care. The $3500.00 raised from the last dance will be send to Ranji, the home matron for her to use it where it is most needed. There are presently over 300 in Ebenezer’s own Primary school and they have to be provided with everything as they come to the school with absolutely NOTH-ING!!!!!! Ebenezer is also supporting 44 kids at Secondary School (can you imagine what that costs - uniforms, shoes, books, fees etc) along with taking care of 16 elderly grand parents (single all of them I think) who are endeavouring to rear their orphaned grand children.

Keep up the good work!

More news from Ebenezer

ports.

The “NUT” AwardIt matters little what the mon-etary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. They are not only a danger to themselves but they are a danger to other road users who have no control over the prevailing situ-ation, not through their actions but the actions of the inconsider-ate drivers. Each week we will bring you the contender for the weekly “NUT” award - that is the weakest part of the car’s safety - “The Nut behind the wheel”...Let us see if we can do our little bit to improve road safety around our town.If you know the person men-tioned please have a quiet word to them.

This week’s award goes to:-the driver of the dark coloured Faslcon stn sedan travelling up the Landsborough Range about 5.45p.m. on Saturday last.He overtook a line of traffi c over double lines when a vehicle came around the curve forcing this vehicle severely to the left causing a dangerous situation for the drivers of following cars.Falcon Driver - You’re a Bloody Idiot” you had no hope of seeing oncoming vehicles.

Our Green HintSome green tips for around the home!

* Fix slow drains. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain and follow it with half a cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for twenty minutes to a half hour, then pour a litre of boiling water down the drain. * Save old, tattered towels and T-shirts for cleaning. Cut them into squares and they become useful rags that can replace store-bought rags and paper towels. * Make your own household cleaners. This is a safer alternative to relying on harsh, toxic commercial products. Effective cleaning products can be made with borax, washing soda, distilled white vinegar, baking soda, salt, club soda, cooking oil and lemons. On their own or combined together, you can make scouring powder, furniture polish, an all-purpose cleaner and more! * Buy a shower curtain that will far outlast cheap plastic ones; A shower curtain made of hemp will naturally resist mildew and is ma-chine washable. * Turn your soap-bar scraps into usable shavings. Using a cheese grater, grate several scraps into shavings and put them in a decorative bowl next to the sink. Just take a pinch from the bowl with a dry hand, add water and work into a lather.

Truthful Jones Tells... he heard about his mate, Paddy Paddy was at the Maleny Hotel the other night when a Texan paid a visit to Maleny. He enters the pub and raises his voice to the crowd of drinkers.

He shouts, ‘I hear you Irish are a bunch of drinkin’ fools. I’ll give $500 American dollars to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back to back.’

The room is quiet and no one takes of the Texan’s offer.

Paddy Murphy gets up and leaves the bar. Thirty minutes later, he shows back up and taps the Texan on the shoulder. Is your bet still good?’ asks Paddy.

The Texan answers, ‘Yes, ‘and he orders the barman to line up 10 pints of Guinness.

Immediately, Paddy downs all 10 pints of beer, drinking them all back to back.

The other pub patrons cheer and the Texan sits down in amaze-ment.

The Texan gives the Irishman the $500 and asks, ‘If ya don’t mind me askin’, where did you go for that 30 minutes you were gone?’

Paddy Murphy replies, ‘Oh. I had to go out to the Irish Bar at Tran-quel Partk to see if I could do it fi rst.’

I feel another federal election

coming upWell, the people of Australia have spoken. It appears that it is only at election time that politicians listen.

We are all fi nding that life is an economic struggle at the moment with the pres-ent economic situation.

With the count so close nei-ther side of government has a clear mandate from the people. Does this mean that all election promises made by both side have to be implemented or none of them?

It will be a trying time in parliament, but one thing that could make history is that we would have an independent Speaker of Parliament and this could make some of the Speaker’s rulings more impartial and not aligned to the politicsal party in power - this could be a good thing.

Maybe this term politicians masy work a little harder to represent their constitu-ents and not take them for granted and that could only be good.

Somehow I feel another federal election coming up sooner than we would nor-mally expect.

Cheers Pres Dave

Before commencing your painting take a little extra time to use mask-ing tape and newspaper to protect switch plates, light fi ttings etc and drop cloths to protect furniture and surfaces that could be accidentally damaged or splattered by the paint. When painting an entire room al-ways work on the ceiling fi rst. The advantage of this is that any paint that splatters on the walls can be cleaned up easily or painted over.Make sure you are using clean roll-ers, trays and brushes. Tip some paint into the tray. Do not put too much as it makes loading the roller diffi cult and spillage easy.Paint the edge of the ceilings fi rst. Using a 60mm brush to paint a border between the ceiling and wall slowly and accurately.Once the roller cover is fi rmly fi tted onto the roller frame, take the roller and put it into the paint and let it saturate all the fabric. Roll the roller over the ribbed area of the paint tray to squeeze out the excess paint.Apply the paint in a zig zag pat-tern so you form a large M or W. Smooth out the paint without reloading the roller.Having used masking tape to protect the edges of wood work or glass, use a brush to paint around the edges of doors, windows and baseboards.Fill in the open area with the roller. Never stop painting mid wall. If you stop the paint mark will show when the job is fi nished. If you need to take a break stop at a win-

dow or door or better yet after an entire wall.

HintRoll-On - Painting hallways can involve many architraves and skirt-ings. Its a good time to think about trying out a paint pad. These little foam pads with wheels can really speed up the job, taking the fuss out of edges.

Weather to PaintIf it looks like rain, remember the painter’s rule; if you wouldn’t hang the washing out or wash the car, don’t paint! Nothing is more disappointing than seeing you work ruined!

First StopPaint exterior doors and windows early in the day, prop them open to dry and they will be ready to close

by nightfall.Little Things

An artists brush, instead of a house painting brush will help you pick out small details in extra colours quickly and neatly.

Time TravelGently scraping the paint work can reveal your home’s colourful history and give you some original colour ideas.

Cool TipIf you are using water based paints, on a hot day, spraying walls with water before you paint will cool them down and make the job faster and easier - you can even paint them wet.Everything you need to for that important painting job is available at Maleny Paint Place, 6/14 Lawyer Street, Maleny

Election victoryI’m humbled and honoured that Fisher residents have chosen me to be their Federal Member for anoth-er term. It was a challenging and gruelling election campaign but the hard work is defi nitely worth it.

I look forward to honouring the four key pledges I made in the lead-up to Saturday’s poll. I will keep vigorously pushing the Feder-al and State Governments for more infrastructure to cope with the Sun-shine Coast’s growing population. I will continue my determined fi ght to improve our health services. I will support and foster employment opportunities here. I will promote projects that keep the Sunshine Coast a great place to live.

Beside’s being a strong voice in Canberra, I am also committed to being immersed in the local com-munity. I lend my support to as many not-for-profi t and charity events as possible. They are valu-able opportunities to meet constitu-ents and learn about local issues.

Residents can also contact my electorate offi ce if they need help or advice on issues such as immi-gration, child support and pensions. This one-on-one support is an espe-cially rewarding part of my job.

Dalai Lama returns

The Sunshine Coast will welcome

back a very important person next year. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has accepted an invitation to return to the Sunshine Coast.

The Tibetan leader will visit the Chenrezig Institute at Eudlo on June 16. He is expected to con-fer the offi cial opening of its new Gompa, bless the memorial gar-dens and stupa, and give a short teaching. The Institute will announce more details as they are fi nalised.

I extended the invitation, on behalf of the Institute, when I met with the Dalai Lama in India last year. I was part of the fi rst-ever Austra-lian Parliamentary delegation to visit His Holiness at his home in Dharamsala.

Wear Red for Daniel

I will soon contact all of Australia’s new Federal Members and it’s all for a good cause.

I will ask them to show their sup-port for this year’s Day for Daniel by wearing red in Parliament on October 29. Before the Federal Election, several parliamentarians had agreed to be a part of the event. I’m now determined to get the rest involved.

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation holds the annual Day for Daniel in tribute to the Sunshine Coast teenager who’s been missing since

December, 2003. The Day raises money for and awareness about child safety.
