When most people think of Rotary, I am told the picture that comes to mind is older, grey haired men sitting around a table socializing. So, imagine their
surprise when they see me and I tell them I have been with Rotary for 10 years and currently hold a position of Assistant District Governor.My � rst experience with Rotary was in 2006, being selected for an exchange to Turkey for � ve weeks to be an ambassador of Canada. With almost a year of training I was off to Turkey with 5 team mates. It was an amazing experience and I wanted to learn more about Rotary.Rotary is an international service club with a four-star ranking from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of non-pro� ts. From Port Moody to Haney there are 7 Rotary clubs and internationally over 35,000 clubs. “Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad.”Our motto is Service Above Self. Thus, our members have taken the opportunity to promote peace, � ght disease, provide clean water/sanitation, support education and grow local economies. With 1.2 members internationally we
can absolutely make a difference. The Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge has hosted several community events such as the Duck Race and the Wine Festival. They have supported education by delivering dictionaries to schools in district 42 as well as provide Star� sh backpacks full of food to students in need of support. This is just a few examples of the difference the Rotary Club of Meadow Ridge has made in their community. Rotary is also much more. Rotary provides fellowship, sense of community, networking, scholarships, leadership training, international student exchange opportunities, grant writing, support peace centers, and I can probably � ll a page with lots more examples of Rotary involvement.This year the Rotary foundation turns 100 years old. That’s 100 years of members of Rotary making a difference in our communities and internationally.
