Rotary Victor Harbor Bulletin September 13, 2020 Meeting - Wednesday 2nd September 2020 Melissa Rebbeck talked about wanting to inject science into the political debate, by showing climate change can provide opportunities. She said the most rapid method of addressing climate change is by using carbon sinks where trees and vegetation takes carbon back into the soil. To improve production capacity we need to improve the soil carbon which at the same time increases the water stored in the soil. This will increase the vegetation coverage and hence absorb more carbon. Melissa talked about using Biochar as feed for animals which was found in a trial with Fleurieu Milk to reduce the amount of vegetation they were required to eat whilst at the same time increased milk production. Biochar is full of microbes. Biochar is digested by animals, but ends up in their dung. Dung beetles bury it into the soil and hence increases the soil carbon. Biochar is a bio mass made mainly from wood burnt in the absence of oxygen. President’s Message• 16th September - Partners Night - Michael May will be inducted as a new member of

Rotary Victor Harbor - Welcome Michael.• If you haven't already done so please email [email protected] your

date of birth, we need to record it in the system for insurance purposes.• All Rotarians and partners are welcome to come to the Art Show Sponsor's night at Hotel

Crown, Wednesday 23rd September. RSVP to Judith Phillips by 16th Sept. Paul Taylor will be MC on the night

• Please be advised that as a result of the difficulties in organising and managing a large event such as the Victor Harbor Christmas Pageant the organising committee have decided to cancel this year's event. In lieu of the Pageant, Rotary Victor Harbor and Rotary Encounter Bay are planning a 'Festival of Christmas' event which will run from Monday 7 December to Saturday 12 December.  Christmas lights displays, a Christmas Tree competition, static float displays and more are being considered for the week. The Rotary Clubs are keen to put on an event that will be just as enjoyable for our community and will look forward to outlining the activities in more detail soon. We expect to be in a position to outline our event structure soon and will be in touch to provide you with more detail.

• Festival of Christmas 8th onward. Great week of Christmas events will include the Polio Ute being in Ocean Street to have a fund-raising event for Polio. This will be a joint event with Rotary Encounter Bay and we will be looking for volunteers to man the site to sell raffle tickets etc.

• Upcoming events - Happy Hour Friday 2nd October at Victor Harbor Football Club Rooms. Note at 6pm there will be a minute silence for RSL.

• Monthly Ocean Street Markets commencing 24th October. Rotary has been invited to assist. Board has endorsed that we do monthly BBQ and traffic marshalling every second month.

• A reminder to share any information or photos you have with the Marketing team.  Details with photos are always appreciated, so they can be shared.  Names of those in the photos, location or activity etc.

Julie Irwin President 2020/21

Crown Hotel ParkingThe front of the hotel has no access to parking as work on the Railway Terrace precinct has commenced and parking spaces in the hotel car park are also reduced. You may need to use Coral Street or the car park on the foreshore.

Community Services Our Rotary Club has been very busy lately. By providing the gate 'monitors' for the Football and Netball. We will have raised over $2,000 for the club to use wisely in our community. This is great fund raising by our members. Hopefully we are offered the opportunity to do the gates again next year as it's a bit of fun and raises good money for the club.

Victor Harbor had their market in Ocean Street recently, which is normally held on the foreshore. Some of our members undertook Marshal duties as a fund raiser for the club and our faithful BBQ was up and running. Again some good money raised. Well done to those who assisted.

Bradley's Place got a visit on Wednesday 9th Sept by a good number of our members. A bit of gardening, weed poisoning and fellowship was undertaken. Thanks to those who came along.

Rotary Victor Harbor Bulletin September 13, 2020

You would all know by now that the Victor Harbor Christmas Pageant is cancelled for this year. Due to Covid-19 issues, it was determined that it was going to be almost impossible to run the event and as such we have put together a sub committee to work on 'The Festival of Christmas' event. This event will run between 7 and 12 December and will include a variety of events and displays. We'll keep you posted and hopefully many of you will become involved.

A thought for the day

What you do with an empty toilet paper roll surprisingly says a lot about YOU.

There are people in this life and some of them will never be willing to go out of their way to fix a problem, to help, or to lend a hand- even when they've contributed to that problem.

They just wait for the next person to come along and take care of things.

Then, there are people in this life who see a problem and they step in- even if they didn't have a part in causing it- and those people lend a hand to help.

They don't wait for someone else to come along and fix it, they ARE the person that does.

Do you put a new roll on, or do you wait for the next person to after you've used the last of it?

It's how we handle the smallest things in life, that usually reflect on how we handle the biggest.

Laugh LinesA London lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Glasgow copper. He thinks that he is smarter than the cop because he is a lawyer from LONDON and is certain that he has a better education than any Jock cop.

He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Glasgow cops expense!!Glasgow cop says, "Licence and registration, please."London Lawyer says, "What for?"Glasgow cop says, "Ye dinnae come to a complete stop at the stop sign."London Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."Glasgow cop says, "Ye still dinnae come to a complete stop. Licence and registration, please"London Lawyer says, "What's the difference?"Glasgow cop says, "The difference is, ye huvte come to complete stop, that's the law, Licence and registration, please!"London Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my licence and registration and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket."Glasgow cop says, "Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir."The London Lawyer exits his vehicle. The Glasgow cop takes out his baton and starts beating the living daylights out of the lawyer and says, "Dae ye want me to stop, or just slow doon?"

Member’s Profile Jeff McEvoy

I was born at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital during the baby boom after WW2 and have a younger and older Brother.

Our family lived in Woodville and my father was a milk vendor and also drove a truck for Harris Scarfe delivering building supplies. I was his slave labour on weekends and school holidays!

I attended Ridley Grove Primary School and Woodville High School. I joined the National Bank straight from high school and completed a Business Certificate – Banking via night school and correspondence. I worked for the National Bank for 30 years at suburban, city and country branches including Berri, Renmark, Stirling, Mount Barker, Naracoorte, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor.

I was involved in an armed hold-up in 1975 at the Kilkenny North agency.

It was while working for the NAB, I met and married Debbie, now my ex-wife (on good terms!) and we have two sons, Daniel and Sam.

Shortly after leaving the NAB, I was appointed to manage a new branch of the CPS Credit Union in Victor Harbor, now called Beyond Bank. This was a perfect fit for me being more customer service oriented. The branch became profitable within 3 years, well ahead of expectations. I worked for Beyond a little over 10 years when 40 years in finance became enough.

I now work 2 days a week at the Liberty Service Station and 2 shifts for Orcas Taxis to fund my hobbies, at the moment restoring a 1972 Long Wheel Base Land Rover.

I joined the Naracoorte Apex Club in 1991 and transferred to the Pine City Club when we moved to Mount Gambier. I joined the Victor Harbor Rotary Club in 1998 when we transferred here with NAB.

My sporting life started with football and basketball at primary school however I had to choose between them at high school, which wasn’t difficult after a particularly cold and wet footy training session!

I played district basketball for West Adelaide at Forestville and league at St Clair stadium for Cheltenham, now called Woodville in the state league. As a junior in 1975, I was selected to play in a New Zealand tour of the North Island. This was my first time in an aircraft.

When work took me to the country I played in local competitions and was awarded Best and Fairest in the A Grade on two occasions. I retired from basketball in 2009 at Victor Harbor when 52 y.o.

During my time playing basketball I also took up competing in “Fun Runs” and completed 9 City to Bays, 2 City to Port Adelaide, 3 Barmera to Berri’s and numerous 5 km runs held at the same time as the local triathlons. I also was the boundary umpire for the V.H.F.C. Reserves for 15 years averaging 8kms a game…not all running! When not injured, I try and surf a longboard!

My duties in Rotary included being the sponsorship officer for the Art Show committee for 11 years , I lost count of how many years I have been sergeant, and over 10 years as the wishing well cleaner/money counter.

I love living on the South Coast and hope to see out my days here.
