ROTARY CLUB OF LINDSAY #4744 JANUARY 13, 2020

January 13, 2020

The first meeting of 2020 was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Sir Sam Hughes Br. 6,7 on York Street, Lindsay

President Adam called the meeting to order and we struggled through a rendition of our National Anthem that might have set Peter Milner spinning. That said, without musical accompaniment, it was a valiant effort. No one fell asleep and we carried on.

There were no guests in attendance.

Today’s humour was a story about a foul mouthed parrot. The owner tried everything he could think of to train the parrot out of his penchant for embarrassing his owner with profane and vulgar language. the owner decided to punish the bird and put him in the freezer to ‘cool’ his heels. The bird continued to spew profanities for a few minutes but suddenly fell silent. the owner opened the freezer and much to his surprise, the bird, in flawless and eloquent terms, apologized profusely for his behaviour. Following a moment of silence while the owner was gathering his wits, the bird said, “may I ask Sir, what did the turkey do?”

The Guatemala literacy project, H.A.R.T, and Cambodian school project, to which Lynda and Carol will be heading for 3 weeks beginning 23 January. Finemaster Mike started off the festivities by putting a “sad” ?? buck because he will miss our next meeting. He will think of us fondly from the deck of a catarmaran somewhere in the British Virgin Islands.

Adam is happy to be Uncle Adam.

Jerry is happy to have welcomed his fourth granddaughter and that the Kettle Drive this year topped their goal with final tally coming in about $126,000. Thanks to members who helped out.

Doug recently found out that his daughters will both be making him a grandad.

Blair is glad to be back after fulfilling 11 weeks jury and court duties. He is also happy to have attended the presentation of his daughter’s PHD. Blair also told us about his son’s extended service at the regular broadcast of Hockey night in Canada. Seems he was the guy who’s job it was to tell “Grapes” to “wrap it up” after which a couple of comedians wanted to know what he does now. Blair’s attendance will be short lived as he is heading south for 3 weeks.

Ian put in a happy buck for the Canadian Junior Hockey Champions.

Charlie put in a “safe journey” buck for Lynda and Carol.

Carol put in some travel bucks for her European River Cruise and Cambodia

Lynda fined herself for going to the Golf Club before remembering Lunch at the Legion.

Christine is happily settled in her new apartment

Erin put in a sad buck for the passengers killed in the airliner shot down in Iran and a happy buck for the world Juniors, particularly the player from the Peterborough Petes.

John Bennett was happy to have caught up with a misprinted cheque. It was supposed to have been quite a bit more than the $90.

President Adam is looking for suggestions for speakers and meeting program ideas.

In closing Pres. Adam went back to 1929-1930 when the president was S.P. Beall and the Secretary was Frank Weldon

There being nothing further for the good of Rotary, the meeting was adjourned.

Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.

Paul Harris

Polio: There is no cure. It results in paralysis and death. It affects children. It is preventable by immunization.

What impact can one donation have?

It can save a life. A child can be protected from polio with as little as 60 cents. Our partners make your donation go even further. For every $1 Rotary commits to polio eradication, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $2.
