What a fantastic night our Goal Setter Award ceremony was on Wednesday night. The 3 awardees,

Stephen Halliday, Anna Johnston and Stacey Christie all symbolised so well what these awards are all

about and yet again confirm that our involvement is truely merited.

And the Guest speaker, Pem Sherpa from Nepal wowed us with his tales of adventure in Nepal,

conquests of Mt Everest, raising of the Rotary flag and his wedding at the top of Everest.

Pem comes from the remote village of Chyangba in the Mt Everest region and until Wednesday night

our club has funded a significant portion of the rebuild cost of a classroom block at the only school in

the village which had fallen into disrepair. On Wednesday night we collectively managed to fund the

shortfall to complete the building and to fit it out ready for use. Firstly everyone on the night most

generously bought raffles, silent auctions and contributed to the Sergeants session with much

enthusiasm. And to top it off our Goal Setter sponsors again demonstrated their generosity by

undertaking to meet any remaining costs to fit out the building. Again a big thank you to our Ian,

along with Ian Cassels and his wife Caitlin Taylor from the Wellington Company.

The rebuilding programme is well under way with completion due shortly and it is great to know that

the building will shortly be ready for use and that Port Nicholson has made a huge difference in

making this happen.

We were also treated to some special Rotary awards with District Governor Graeme Blick awarding a

Paul Harris Fellow to Neville Jordan. For those of you who don’t know, Neville was a Rotarian at the

Petone and Wellington Central clubs many years ago, being a past president of the latter club. Of

more recent times Neville has undertaken great work in start-up businesses and has undertaken

many good deeds encouraging others to excellence. Neville was the Wellingtonian of the year last

year and is a truly deserving PHF.

To add to this the DG also awarded a PHF to Pem Sherpa in recognition of all the great work he is

doing in his home village in Nepal not only with the school, but also with clean water, better health

and so much more to better the lives of all in his village.

And finally the DG made a special award to CJRR recognising all his on-going work with district

matters. Importantly Chris also does a huge amount of work behind the scenes in our club and the

recognition was well and truly deserved. It was great to see a number of past district governors with

us to share the moment.

A great night all round and again special thanks to Dallas and her Service Committee team and all

others who pitched in and helped out on the night or with the work leading up. The list of all those

who helped in one way or another is a long one and includes Jeff, Marc, Dawn, Linda, Linda,

Christopher, Brent, Stuart, Jane, Julian, Bev, Peter, Gaylene, Gillian and on the night outstanding

performances by MC John Bishop and Sergeants Jo and Bev. A big list I know with a large number

from the club helping out in some way to make Goal Setters run smoothly from start to finish. Big

thanks to you all again.

Unfortunately I cannot join you again this Wednesday as I am walking the Heaphy Track along with

some others from the club as well as our overseas Goal Setters guest speaker Pem Sherpa and Curt

Harris, a long standing Rotarian from Colorado. Again Jane will keep the meeting running smoothly

and I will be back with you the following Wednesday.

Sam Johnson is the keynote speaker on Friday night. Kathryn Ryan is also a speaker and here’s a bit of infor-mation about her.

Host of top-rating Radio New Zealand National’s mid-morning current affairs and feature programme, Nine to

Noon.

Nine to Noon is the most interesting and entertaining programme on radio, primarily due to Kathryn's topic selec-tion, interviews, humour and incredible grasp of everything topical.

Kathryn will be speaking about her interviews and experiences on radio, especially as they pertain to the Youth of NZ. This promises to be one of the best keynote addresses of the conference.

Find out who else is speaking at: www.rotaryconf2013.co.nz/speakers.

Saturday night is party night, with a theme of "Starry Starry Night".

Pre-dinner drinks, a gala dinner, the best entertainment, and dancing to a great band.

STARRY STARRY NIGHT is the theme, so if you are inclined dress up as your favourite STAR, as if you are attend-ing the Oscars, as your favourite impressionist painter, or even as Don McLean! You may also wish to organ-

ise your club to select a Special Club Theme for dressing up. Prizes for the best Club. The sky is the limit for your

imagination, so go wild and join in the fun.
