The Rotary Club of Warren

welcomed visiting Rotarian Jim

Tallman, Scott Evans who was Ginny Director of the Boy Scouts Arrowhead

Bond’s guest and is a prospective

new member, Dominic Mararri’s

mother, Teresa Goldner and nephew,

Donny Goodwin, and Rob Berk’s son,

Jayden, at its August 22nd

meeting. For Fellowship, John

Robertson once again delighted us

with a story. Three guys were doing

construction on the top floor of a

high rise building. The first guy

opened his lunchbox and found corned

beef and cabbage. He lamented, “If I have corned beef and cabbage one

more day, I swear I’ll jump off this building.” The second gentleman opened

his lunchbox and discovered burritos. He said, “If I have burritos one more

day, I’ll jump off this building.” The third worker opened his lunchbox, and

he had a baloney sandwich. His response was: “If I have baloney one more

day, I’ll jump off this building.”

The next day, each worker opened their lunchboxes, only to find the

same meals again. They jumped to their death. At their combined funeral

service, the wives of the first and second guys felt bad and indicated that if

they had known their husbands wanted something else to eat, they would have

gladly fixed it. However the third wife said, “Don’t look at me! He fixed his

own lunch!”

John ended by saying that we don’t know how long we’ll be on this earth.

Even though we have good and bad days, we often have a choice to either

focus on the bad or be happy. He recommended that if we have a choice to

be happy, do so today!

THANK YOU! – President Venita Collins thanked the Registration Table

and Set Up/Tear Down Committees, Greeters, those who offer

Invocations, Song Leaders and Piano Players for all that they do each

week week to help make our meetings run smoothly!

CONGRATULATIONS! – The Association of Fundraising Professionals

Mahoning-Shenango Chapter has announced that Diane Sauer will be

honored as the 2018 Outstanding Philanthropist during a luncheon

ceremony on Friday, November 6, 2018 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

The event will take place at 11:00 a.m., and tickets are $35.

P THE DISTRICT 6650 FALL ASSEMBLY – is scheduled for Saturday,

September 8th at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio from

8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. All President-Elects, Vice-Presidents,

Secretaries, Treasurers, and Chairs of Public Image, Foundation, and

Membership Committees are encouraged to attend.

WORLD POLIO DAY – We will celebrate World Polio Day by holding a

raffle on October 24, 2018. The winner of the raffle will be

awarded a bottle of wine, donated by PDG Geoff Goll, and a Paul

Harris Fellow! Raffle tickets are available at the price of $5 each or

five for $20.

2018-2019 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT – The Rotary Club

of Warren will partner with the Champion and Cortland Clubs this year

to sponsor exchange student, Emma Serge, of Italy. Emma will be

invited to speak to our Club within the next few months.

LUNCH MEETING VENUE – It takes a minimum of 25 meals

purchased at our Club’s meetings to make it worthwhile for Enzo’s to

host host us each week. In addition, it has been brought to our attention

that the storage of our supplies and the time that it takes the

restaurant staff to clean up are concerns. As a result, a committee

has been formed to explore other venue options. Findings will be

shared with members and a Club vote will be taken at a weekly

meeting in the near future. Any suggestions regarding alternative

venues should be forwarded to Teri Surin.

MAGAZINE REPORT

Nick Verina provided Club

members with a summary of his

favorite articles in the August,

2018 issue of the Rotarian.

The first thing that caught

Nick’s eye was a “Snapshot” of

The Grand Turks, Turks and

Caicos Islands. A member of

the Rotaract Club of Puerto

Princesa in the Philippines

photographed a shipwreck on

the islands which many consider

to be an eyesore. However,

Nick Nick recommends checking out this photo and other information from

around the globe in the section titled, “our world”.

In “Step Right Up!”, you can learn ten tips for attracting

new members to our Club. They include: creating a list of great

things about our Club; keeping a list of potential members; knowing

our strengths; making membership growth a priority; getting fresh

perspectives from young Rotarians; appealing to local volunteers;

talking about Rotary wherever you go; making a list of members’

responsibilities; realizing that there’s no reason to ever stop

recruiting; emphasizing diversity; emphasizing service; celebrating

new members; being persistent; being vibrant; and getting people in

the door. In addition to this article, Rotary International offers

more resources and information on membership at:

rotary.org/membership.

If you want to be a leader in Rotary, Nick recommends checking

out “Could you be the next RI president?”. Here, RI President

Barry Rassin reveals that when he first joined Rotary, he couldn’t

make a public speech. Yet, he became comfortable addressing large

crowds and gained so many other benefits by assuming a leadership

position. Read about the different positions available within Rotary

and the myths associated with them.

In addition to global news and educational information about Rotary,

there are always inspirational stories in the Rotarian as well. This month’s

issue tells us about life-altering reconstructive surgeries being funded by

Rotarians in Chile and the United States for patients with cleft lips and

palates in “A reason to smile”.

You can find the answers to “4 questions about…attracting young people

to Rotary” on page 55. The questions are: “Why did you get involved?”,

“How can Rotary clubs reach more young people?”, “What can struggling

clubs do differently?”, and “What role should young people play in a club’s

member recruitment strategy?”. Learn how to build a vibrant club by

reading reading this article and visiting: rotary.org/engaging-younger-professionals.

Finally, meet some of the individuals who will be heading up Rotary

International and the Rotary Foundation in “New directors and trustees take

office”.

Pick up the August 2018 issue of the Rotarian today. As Nick Verina

says, “You never know what kind of magic can appear!”

GERALD R. DONOHOE

December 4, 1935 – February 18, 2018

Rotarian of the Century, Dallas Woodall, presented the following

heartfelt memorial to the Rotary Club of Warren, with Jerry’s wife, Alice,

present:

“We knew him better as ‘Jerry’ than ‘Gerald’.

Jerry was a friendly, amiable member of the Rotary Club of Warren,

having joined on November 7, 1990, more than a quarter century ago.

Jerry served and enjoyed Rotary in his own low key manner. He was one of

those ‘unsung heroes’ of our club.

He was not only quiet, but also a responsible person with a reputation

for being a good husband and a good friend. He served and enjoyed Rotary

with loyalty and sincerity. His belief in people made him a person you would

want to have want to have for a friend.

Jerry was a proud Irishman, active in the local chapter of the Ancient

Order of Hibernians. He and his wife, Alice, were active members of St.

Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish of the Roman Catholic Church.

Jerry was born in Pittsburgh on December 4, 1935. He was

graduated from high school and received a two-year industrial degree in Pittsburgh. He emigrated to the Mahoning Valley in the mid 1960’s, more

than 50 years ago and began working for Wean as their records

manager, which position he held for 20 years. He received an associate’s

degree from Youngstown State university. He later embarked upon a long

career in real estate with George Tricomi Realty, some other realtors and

finally with Snelson & Stevens Realty selling homes and businesses right

up through two months before his death.

I frequently sat at the same table with Jerry and enjoyed his wit,

demeanor and values. We appreciated receiving the regular updates at

our meetings of Jerry’s final illness, but agonized over his ailments.

Jerry was no RINO (Rotarian in Name Only). In his own quiet

manner, he was a fine Rotarian. He served on our Meals on Wheels

committee delivering meals for Trumbull Mobile Meals. And, as you might

imagine, Jerry was a believer in The Rotary Foundation and its charitable

goals as he became a Paul Harris Fellow showing his support for world

peace and understanding and the programs of TRF including the

eradication of polio worldwide.

Jerry was also a sailor, belonging to the Berlin Yacht Club. And I

am sure there is much more about Jerry that I have not learned. I’ve

often thought it is sad that we have to wait until the end of someone’s

life to learn more about him or her.

Jerry will be missed by his wife, Alice, whom he married on May 19,

1962. Jerry will be missed also by in-laws, nieces and nephews as well

as some very close and dear friends. And, of course, we of The Rotary

Club of Warren will also miss Jerry.

Jerry Donohoe, rest in peace, you have, indeed, left your campsite

better than you found it.”

DOMINIC MARARRI RECEIVES

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW AWARD

On August 22nd, Dominic Mararri’s nephew, Donnie, proudly looked on

as his uncle received the following tribute presented by Dallas Woodall:

“I have something neat to share with you today. As you have

probably surmised, it is the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow award.

Instead of harassing Dominic Mararri about his picture in the Tribune, I

can now announce that he is our newest Paul Harris Fellow.

This is always a pleasant duty because it shows the willingness of our

members to share, through The Rotary Foundation, one of the most

efficient charities in the world, some of their good fortune to improve

the lives of others less fortunate.

Dominic joined our club only a few years ago and has not only become

a a willing worker, a sharing Rotarian and in line to become our president,

but but he is one of my heroes!

Dominic has been a prime example of courage and conviction, the

likes of which probably none of us has ever or ever will have experienced.

His life is a shining example of the strength and power of the human

spirit.

Dominic, as you begin your progression ‘through the chairs’ of the

Rotary Club of Warren toward eventually becoming our president, you will

learn much about Rotary. The highlight of that learning will be when you

attend the All Ohio P.E.T.S. – Presidents Elect Training Seminar (in

Columbus several months before you take office) and other district

meetings and seminars to increase your knowledge of Rotary and hone

your your leadership skills.

A good part of that emphasis will be on The Rotary Foundation. The

Foundation is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations and

which makes Rotary so strong. Can you imagine any other service club

taking on the challenge of the eradication of polio? And that is just

one of its many humanitarian programs.

I have always believed that a club president, as our leader, should

be be working towards becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. That is one more

aspect of leadership by example and an endorsement of the power of The

Rotary Foundation.

Dominic, one of our members has funded a Paul Harris Fellow in your

name. Therefore, you will be added to our banner and become a Paul

Harris Fellow forever. I am happy to present to you this pin which you

should wear to Rotary functions and this certificate evidencing this honor

in in your name. I will ask the loquacious Donnie to pin this on you.

Congratulations, Dominic. Wear our pin with pride and support The

Rotary Foundation.”

MCCTC, teaching adults how to change their lifestyle. His passion is

creating healthy living in his community, the Greater Youngstown/Warren

area, and to that end, he launched and oversees Project G.O.H.A.

(Getting Ohioans Healthy Again), which is a community wellness care

program that provides wellness education for individuals living in Ohio.

Butch also volunteers at the Warren Family Mission.

Butch indicated that Type II Diabetes is prevalent in the Mahoning

Valley and much worse in Trumbull County. Recipes haven’t changed, but

the ingredients used to prepare meals have. Everyone loves carbs, but

when we consume them, our blood sugar becomes elevated and our

thyroid slows down, causing a yoyo effect, development of insulin

sensitivity, and inflammation. Metabolism also slows down, and we crave

sweets, like soda, candy, and more carbs. When we do this all day

long, we put ourselves at risk for developing pre-diabetes, high blood

pressure, and high cholesterol. The morale of the story: if man made

it, don’t eat it!

Instead, keep your blood sugar levels steady throughout the day by

focusing on veggies. Eat protein first, because it fuels the body. Then

eat vegetables which provide fiber, and limit fruit to two servings per

day. Consume mostly green and yellow foods, but stay away from corn,

baby carrots, and watermelon. They are high in sugar. In addition,

Butch stated that the scale is our worse enemy. Many diets cause you

to lose muscle and water and weigh less. However, in order to be truly

fit, you want to lose fat. So, pay attention to the tape measure!

“And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do

for you; ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of

the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what, together, we

can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the

world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice

which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with

history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we

love, asking His blessing and His help.” From the Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy
