JOIN US T

Chris Shape closed out December

with with another amusing story. An

engineer was unemployed and couldn’t

find a job. So, he opened a medical

clinic, advertising treatment for $500

and claiming that if the treatment was

cli unsuccessful, the patient would get

$1,000 back.

The first patient came to the clinic

because he had lost his sense of taste.

The doctor prescribed drops from

Medicine Box #22. When the patient

exclaimed that they tasted like gas,

the doctor said, “Congratulations! You

got your taste back! $500 please!”

The next patient had lost his

memory. Medicine from Box #22 was

prescribed, and the patient indicated

that it was gas. The doctor said,

“Congratulations! You got your memory

f back. $500 please.”

Several days later, a patient

indicated that his eyesight wasn’t working. The doctor said, “I have no

medicine; take this $1,000.” “But this is a $500 bill,” said the patient.

“Congratulations,” said the doctor, “Your eyesight is back!”

And with that being said, Chris sauntered back to his seat,

sporting sporting a new walking boot! Yes, the fixator is off, and his leg is

mending. We’re happy for you, Chris!!

FELLOWSHIP

During our 25th week of Rotary Year

2018-2019, Patti Augustine summarized her

favorite articles from the December issue

of The Rotarian.

The Rotary Club of Cadiz, Kentucky

used explosives to blow up a bridge. They

sold tickets, and the person who won got to

push the button to set off the detonation.

Talk about a unique, but successful

fundraiser! They netted $16,000! Read

about other unusual events and how they use

their profits in “People of Action Around the

Globe”.

Patti also encouraged us to check out

the “Snapshot” of St. Mary’s Basilica in

Kevelaer, Germany. Noted artist Friedrich

Stummel and his students painted the

interior of what is considered to be one of the most colorful churches in

northern Germany. Proceeds from a concert held there supported Rotary

projects, and those attending the 2019 RI Convention will get to hear the

same orchestra perform. (Patti thinks the Rotary Wheels should join them!!) Finally, a 20 page long article in this month’s issue of our Rotary magazine

will give you pointers on how to read just about anything, including

Shakespeare, tarot cards, the night sky, the riot act, a poker hand, and the

writing on the wall. You can enjoy all of the details in “How to Read:

There’s more to Literacy than Books”.

MAGAZINE REPORT

Page 6: ROTARY NOTES - Microsoft · members members, the rotary club of warren’s weekly noon meetings on wednesdays will be held at the mahoning valley hope center effective january 2,

THERAPEUTIC HORSEBACK RIDING AT THE CAMELOT CENTER Debbie Meeker is the

Program Director and Head

Instructor for The Camelot

Center, a non-profit equine-

assisted therapeutic riding

program. She has been with the organization since August,

1995, first as a volunteer, and

later as an employee beginning

in October, 1995.

Debbie received her

certification as an instructor

in 1996 through PATH, the

Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship. Debbie was with the

Trumbull County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit Auxiliary for 17 years, retiring one

year ago, along with her Sheriff horse, Maggie.

Debbie lives in Austintown with her husband, their dog, and two cats.

Her mother, now 94 years old, always said Debbie would grow out of horses.

However, Debbie says this was the only thing her mother was ever wrong

about!

The goal of The Camelot Center is to help people of all ages and

abilities excel through their interaction with horses. Their riders may face

physical, mental, or emotional challenges, as well as conditions such as

cerebral palsy, spina bifida, autism, down syndrome, brain injury, and more.

Through interactions with horses, individuals gain better balance and

flexibility, posture, motor skills, communication skills, and self-confidence.

In their one hour sessions, riders learn skills of horsemanship and

basic horse care, and they play games, such as bowling and basketball, and

participate in seasonal activities like decorating a Christmas tree, all while

astride a horse. Approximately three years ago, The Camelot Center

partnered with Children’s Rehabilitation Center, whose physical therapist

carries out equine-assisted Physical Therapy with her young clients once a

week at the riding center. Debbie indicated that they would like to expand

in the near future by starting a Veteran’s program. The Center would not

be able to operate without a team of dedicated volunteers and very special

animals which accept the behaviors and individual idiosyncrasies of their

riders. The Camelot Center is run by a Board of Directors, and operating

funds are obtained via lesson fees, donations, grants, and fundraisers.

The Camelot Center will celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 2019.
