Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! The past couple of Rotary meetings have
been loaded with fun, laughter, and the spirit of Christmas. On December
14th, we held our annual Children’s Christmas Party and, needless to say, it
was fun for children and adults alike. On the 21st, we had a presentation
on craft beers (Chris Shape, we thought of you the entire time!) and
enjoyed the samples distributed to all who were so inclined. If you were
there, you know what I’m talking about when I say it was fabulous….if you
weren’t, you missed some good meetings.
It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just a couple days away. For me,
this year has been really special since it’s the first one in my new home.
The past six months have been some of the happiest of my life and I feel
so blessed to have a home and family that I love so much. I hope each and
every one of you looks back on this year with the same happiness and that
you head into the New Year with optimism, good health, and the belief
that the best is yet to come.
As you know, Nick Verina is in charge of Fellowship this month and has
been sharing the Magic of Rotary with everyone. This week he did a
disappearing act….he wasn’t at the meeting! A little elf told us that he
was enjoying the company of his children and grandchildren. Fear not, we
expect him back next week.
Our Guests and Visiting Rotarians were: Michael Surin (Teri’s husband),
Shari Harrell Shape (Chris’s lovely wife), Bill Marstellar and Bill Duda
(Scott Lewis’s guests), and Patrick Bond (Ginny’s son).
Expressions of Concern – Shari Harrell Shape joined us today and gave us
an update on our dear friend, Chris. She said he just had his second
surgery last Thursday and is recovering at his parent’s home since he is
unable to traverse stairs. The operation went well and it is expected that
it will be about 12 weeks before he can bear weight on his leg. He is being
told that his total recovery could take six to nine months. He hopes to
return to Rotary once his recovery reaches the stage where he can get
around on crutches, walker, etc. Anyone wishing to drop him a note can do
so at his parent’s home at 300 Augusta Place, Warren, OH 44484. Shari
also said that Chris spilled water on his phone and it was out of
commission for a time. He can now, however, take phone calls and accept
text messages if you are so inclined to reach out that way.

We want Chris and Shari to both know that we stand ready to help in any
way we can…all they need to do is ask. We send our love to Chris and can’t
wait for him to return. He is missed each and every week.
Operation Toys – Mike Bollas reported that he received toys donated by
the Marines from the Toys for Tots program last week. He and Darlene
Mink-Crouse distributed them to Homes for Kids and Children’s Services
in time for the holidays.
Membership Dues – December 31 is the due date for your semi-annual
membership dues. Please get your money to Cheryl by then, or contact
her to make payment arrangements. We accept checks, cash and credit
cards.
Greeters – The sign-up sheet was passed around at this week’s meeting
for greeters beginning in January 2017. It will go around again next week.
Please be sure to sign up to welcome our guests and friends to our weekly
meetings. It may seem like a small thing, but it sets the tone for the
entire meeting.
Slice of the Valley/Pizza Challenge – We now have a date for the next
Pizza Challenge. It will be on Saturday, February 18th, at St. Demetrios.
Heather Sahli from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will be helping with the
publicity this year and we could not be more delighted. Anyone wishing to
help with the event should contact Julia Wetstein so they can be included
in any upcoming committee meetings.
RI International Convention – As you know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a
booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest
35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.
The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. The deadline for
early registration is passed, but it’s not too late to get registered.
Expect to hear more about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the
year goes by.
Hospitality Suite at the District Conference – President Julia announced
that Warren Rotary would be hosting the Hospitality Suite at the District
Conference next April. A committee has been identified and will be
working on plans. More information will come as the year progresses.
Please mark your calendars that the Conference will take place at Avalon
Inn on April 7 and 8, 2017. There will also be Golf Outing held to benefit
the Women Veteran’s Golf Program.

Magazine Report
This week, Diane Sauer gave the Magazine Report for December. But…did
she give the usual kind of report? She did NOT! It went like this:
“Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the lunch
Rotarians were gathered, a festive looking bunch.
The Banners were hung by the tables with care
In the hopes that a Rotarian review would soon happen there.
The members were nestled all snug at their tables
While visions of Rotary reviews became quite a fable.
And, Julia in her kerchief and Andy in his cap
Had just settled in for a long winters nap.
When out in the parking lot arose such a clatter
They sprang from the chairs to see what was the
matter.
Away to the doorway they flew like a flash
Tore open it up as quickly as a dash.
But what to their wondering eyes did appear
But a miniature Chevy with eight tiny Rotarian
reindeer.
With a little old driver so lively and quick
They knew in a minute it was Diane St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles her courses they came
And she whistled and shouted and called them by
name.
Now Julia, now Andy, now Cheryl, now Bob,
On Denise, on Dallas, on Teri, on Rob.
To the top of the porch to the top of the wall
Now dash away, dash away, dash away all.
The stories in the Magazine are there to be read
You can do it at night when you’re snuggled in bed.
The main story is about an Oregon River
The pollution so bad it will make you shiver.
One story titled tricks of the trade
It’s about con artists and how they are made.
And shelter boxes, and how they can aid
And members of Rotary who volunteer, not paid
World Roundup brings new from around the world
And the Rotary Rose Parade Float doing good in the world.
If you really want to know, grab a copy of the book
And take your time and give it a good look.
And laying her finger aside of her nose

And giving a nod to the parking lot she rose.
She sprang to her Chevy, to her team gave a whistle
And away they all drove live the down of a thistle.
But, she was heard to exclaim as she drove out of sight,
Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!
Absolutely priceless!! Thank you, Diane!!
New Member Inducted
We were delighted to welcome Sandra Kellar into
our Warren Rotary family today. Sandra is a
property manager at Highland Terrace and was
sponsored into the club by Rob Berk. She was born
and raised in Warren, has been married for 31
years, has three children, and one granddaughter.
Sandra worked for Verizon for 21 years and decided to try something
different, going to work for Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority. She
said it is the most rewarding job she has ever had and she says her mission
in life now is to make a difference in the lives of the children in her
development. She said her property has 200 units and there are 4 to 6
children in each one. She said that since she has been there they have
installed a playground, basketball court, baseball field and will be
constructing a pavilion in the future. She spoke passionately about the work
she is doing in conjunction with others in the community and said that
Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self is why she is so excited to
become a Rotarian.
Well, we are excited to have her join us and look forward to getting to know
her better over the weeks and months to come.
Children’s Christmas Party
Our heartfelt thanks go out to the Committee members who ensured that
the children and their families had a great time at the annual Christmas
Party on December 14th. Each child received a gift, had a chance to see
Santa, listen to lively music by the Rotary Wheels, and enjoy a beautiful
program by the Harding Madrigal Choir. It wouldn’t be Christmas without a
visit with the children from Children’s Rehab and Santa!

Modern Methods Brewery
On December 21st, Adam Keck joined us from
Modern Methods Brewery to talk about his life-
long love of crafting beers.
Adam was born and raised in North Jackson and
had an interest in brewing beer starting as a teen.
He has been brewing beer and giving it to friends
for some time and is now in the process of opening Modern Methods
Brewery in Warren. This will be the first brewery in Warren since 1880
and will be located near the Parking Deck on David Grohl Alley.
Adam is hoping to have the tap room and tasting rooms open in late
spring/early summer. The exact date is not known as he is still getting all
the governmental approvals in place.
About a year ago, Adam began seeking investors in his brewery and he
continues to do so even today. He has just leased the Beight building and
will be working to get it cleaned and prepared for public use. While he will
not have a restaurant onsite, he will offer cheese plates, pretzels, etc. and
will also work with other downtown restaurants to fulfill food orders from
his guests. He is also open to hosting social events on a limited basis.
He brought samples of his Christmas Ale for members to try and at the
end of our meeting raffled off growlers to two lucky people, Michael Surin
and Ted Stazak. We wish Adam all the luck in the world and hope to see
him soon at his new business…maybe a Rotary social event!
