As a Neston shop keeper with a successful hardware business his friendly approach to life and his customers made him a popular member of the Neston Community. Jack Pugh Obituary

1926 to 2014

It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Jack Pugh a Neston Rotarian for over 40 years.

Jack was a Paul Harris Fellow, Past President, Past Treasurer and a supporter of Rotary activities

throughout his membership until failing eye sight and deteriorating health forced him to retire from

Rotary. As an Honorary member he took a great interest in what we were up to and had hoped to

attend our 50th

Charter in May 2015.

Jack was born locally and spent the vast majority of his life on the Wirral. As a Neston shop keeper with

a successful hardware business his friendly approach to life and his customers made him a popular

member of the Neston Community.

We will all miss him

We offer his only daughter Catherine and all the family our condolences on the departure of a great

friend.

NEWS FLASH !

The Rotary Club of Neston win District 1180’s Hardman Shield and the New Centurions Youth

Trophy for 2014 .

The Hardman Shield for the Best Club Bulletin in District 1180 was presented by District Governor

Les Wilson to President David Brigden at the District Council Meeting on Tuesday 21st October

2014.

The New Centurians Youth Trophy for a club’s outstanding contribution to youth activities was

presented by the District Governor, Les Wilson to President David Brigden on Saturday 1st

November 2014 at the District Conference in Southport.

Chloe Nickel an A level student and member of the Interact Club at Neston High School was

sponsored by the Rotary Club of Neston to attend and participate in the RYLA scheme in August

this year.

Here is her report:

My RYLA Experience- Arthog, August 2014

Sunday- The course started off with everyone being separated into four teams for the week. The teams

were the four houses from the Harry Potter books, Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff (I was in

Slytherin).

The first task we did as individual teams was a night line challenge, we had to manoeuvre between various

obstacles, this proved somewhat difficult as by then we still did not know each other’s names so having to

guide each other whilst being blindfolded proved to be very difficult but was a great icebreaker and by the

end we could recognise each other’s voices.

Monday-Was various teambuilding exercises, including scaling over an 8ft wall and negotiating around a

spider’s web without touching the boundaries, this was a great way of showing individual leadership as

constant briefing and communication was required.

After lunch it was “The Battle of Arthog Castle” this was a competition between the four teams to cross over

a swamp by using pole ski’s and you were not allowed to touch the ground without starting again. After

crossing the swamp we had to build our tripod, this was to be used to zip line the equipment needed to

build the cannon at the end, care was taken not to drop this as it would have meant instant disqualification.

But it didn’t end there, we then had to cross the lake by using wooden blocks whilst being careful not to

lose contact them as we would not of been able to complete the task. Once across we built our cannon and

fired it 8 times and we achieved 3 on target, so overall we as a team achieved second place.

Tuesday- Was our mountain rescue mission, we had to walk 8 kilometres over the peak. The map reading

skills which we had already done in our DofE expedition came in really useful to navigate our way across to

the other side. It was with great delight that when we found our object it was in fact a box of chocolates….

Wednesday- A choice was given to us to do either rock climbing, canoeing or caving. My choice was an easy

one as I have always enjoyed rock climbing which includes belaying as I have plenty of experience with this

as I have done it numerous times on adventure training weekends with the ATC.

Thursday- I was so chuffed to be nominated leader for our final team competition of the week. I was able to

draw on all the experiences that I had come across within my 5 days of being at Arthog. The leap of faith was

exhilarating even though there was a 30 metre drop (fortunately we hadn’t had lunch by then). Our

individual team was split into two for tent building and ding bat challenges. Navigating the team through the

cave and canoeing to collect various puzzle pieces was great fun. The final challenge was for the designated

minibus driver to be navigated to the estuary where we as a team would build our raft to take us to the

other side to rescue the Wizard, who was being held captive. Once all the teams were across we had to tie

all our rafts together to make it back with the Wizard, the group that completed this as a team was

“Slytherin” I was very proud to have been the leader of the team on the day that we all accomplished what

we had set out to do at the beginning of the week.

Thinking back I would say that the experience at Arthog has given me more confidence as an individual in

putting myself forward as a leader, this will certainly help me as I mature and progress through life (what a

great opportunity).

Come Dine With Me Evenings

On Friday, 19

th September 2014 President David hosted the first of this Rotary year’s ‘Come Dine

With Me Evenings’, the second by Steve and Maria on Friday 7th

November 2014 and the third by

Eric and Janet on Saturday 22nd

November 2014. Great fun was had by those attending. Each

raised money towards one of the President’s chosen charities . The next is on Friday 12th

December 2014

Sponsored Dog Walk Four Rotarians ( David Brigden , Alan Brown, Ben Morris , Eric Wilson) and (Mo Miller) a friend of

the Rotary Club of Neston took part in a 10 mile Sponsored Dog Walk along The Wirral Way on

Saturday 27th

September 2014 . We raised £1800 which with the proceeds from the Bird of Prey

event and the Carillon Concert enabled us to present Clatterbridge Cancer Unit with a cheque for

£2500 on Tuesday 11th

Rotary Crocus in Schools Project Autumn 2014 / Spring 2015

Further to the success of this project at Neston and Woodfall Primary Schools last year we

repeated this venture with our three Rotakids Clubs in Autumn 2014 and will return to help them

sell their pots in Spring 2015.

Brazil Children’s Crèche

As many of you will be aware two years ago I travelled to the Amazon area of Brazil as part of the

GSE team. My team was a great group and we decided that we wanted to make a difference and

leave our mark on the country!

We were hosted in a city called Rio Branco, which is situated on the far west of Brazil near to

Bolivia and Peru. The local Rotarians took us to a Crèche and we were very moved by the hard work

of Maria who ran the crèche with very little help. The building was in dire need of repair. There was

no running water and not a single toy in the place. The local Rotarians were trying their best but

asked for our help. On our return to the UK as a team we fundraised to reach our target of £2000.

We were helped by a large donation from past district governor Colin James who left the money for

the use of a GSE team.

We were given a grant by District 1180 and it was matched by RI to make £8000. The project was

given the green light and work started!

I was given updates from my friends in Brazil and they worked hard to make sure the crèche was

just right. It was such an exciting time to know that our Rotary dream was coming to life!

Not satisfied with seeing the pictures I decided to go to visit the crèche again and in early

September I made the long journey to Rio Branco. I was welcomed at the airport by pretty much

every member of the club! That evening I attended the clubs meeting and was told all about the

progress that had been made. The following morning I was so excited as we made our way through

the very poor area of town where the crèche is situated. When we pulled up outside I could see

immediately the difference it was clearly displaying a great paint job with a new fence around.

When I walked in it was awash with excited children playing with toys that had just been delivered

by the Rotarians. They had chairs to sit on and tables to play games on. A large TV and DVD player

was keeping some children amused in the corner. There were play tents, cars, dolls and books

everywhere!

I was greeting by a very emotional Maria who hugged me so hard I thought I’d broken a rib. She

cried and continually thanked me for what we had done. The kitchen had two freezers, a cooker,

and storage units. There was now running clean water and a cool water dispenser. Fans on the wall

to help in the 40-degree heat. It was nicely painted and had had a full electrical overhaul. There are

also two sewing machines to help the local women raise money to keep the crèche going.

I was delighted with the work.

It is without question one of the most moving occasions of my life. To be able to find a project, see

what needs to be done, fund raise and see the end result with my own eyes was a privilege.

I spent time playing games with the children and returned on a few occasions having lunch with

them and helping out.

The Rotary Club of Rio Branco are eternally grateful to the Rotary Club of Neston for partnering

them in this project and I am grateful to all those Rotarians that have contributed in some way to

make this happen.

I have seldom received such hospitality in my lifetime and I hope that one day our district can repay

this hospitality to our Brazilian friends.

Resurrection Choir of St Petersburg

We were fortunate to have an extra concert this autumn, given by the Resurrection Choir, owing to

a cancellation, which gave them a spare date.

A modest, but very appreciative audience gathered on Friday 24th October 2014 in Neston Parish

Church, to hear some amazing A Capella singing. It is surprising that eight voices could fill the

church so completely with four and eight part harmony, as they gave us first a selection of music

from the Russian orthodox Church tradition. We have all heard of Rachmaninov, but another

prominent composer, Chesnokov, is perhaps less familiar to us here. All eight singers are soloists in

their own right, even the Basso Profundo, and during the evening we heard each one doing a solo

item. The second half was folk songs, mainly Russian, with a brief explanation by Leonid, who also

introduced the singers one by one towards the end of the performance, which also include "Those

were the Days" sung in Russian and then English.

Following rapturous applause and a few words from Alan Dawson, the Vicar, they then performed

an encore, "Kalinka", which the audience evidently all knew as there was much foot-tapping and

clapping along!

We hope to welcome them back in a couple of years, but in the meantime we have a date for your

diaries; Friday March 20th 2015, when we expect to have the full choir of Merton College Oxford

(roughly the Oxford equivalent of Kings Cambridge). The choir are 32 strong and will travel down

from Oxford specially for this 'one off' concert. An event not to be missed!

one. Please collect the bar codes from boxes of Yorkshire Tea Bags and give them to me . . .

The first round of this competition took place on Saturday 15th

November 2014 at Poulton Hall

This round of the competition saw entrants from Wirral and Chester, plus two from Llanidloes.

With only one singer entering at this stage, he will go straight to the District Round in February. The

six competitors for the two places available for instrumentalists were of a very high standard, and

the adjudicators, although agreeing on the first prize had difficulty in separating the second and

third prizes.

The audience, comprising parents and supporters of the competitors, and rotarians from the

sponsoring clubs, were treated to a most enjoyable concert of a wide range of music from Scarlatti

to Satie, played by the four pianists, trumpet, and alto saxophone.

After much deliberation James Tarver (alto sax) was awarded first prize, Sam Robert Fisher (piano)

was second, and Tom Foteinos (piano) third. James and Sam (both sponsored by the RC of

Bebington) will be our entrants to the District Round on Saturday 7th

February 2015. Tom was

sponsored by the RC of Neston. Our congratulations to all the competitors.

MOCK INTERVIEWS

NESTON HIGH SCHOOL

On Friday 28th

November 2014 President David Brigden conducted mock interviews with

Year 13 Students hoping to study Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science at University.

Already plans are in place for next year’s Tournament and David has already written to local

schools and colleges to ensure they have next year’s date in the diary. Next year’s competition

International Evening

at Wirral Tandoori, Bromborough

On Tuesday 18th

November 2014 group of 40 people enjoyed an Indian banquet and raised £300

for Shelterbox. Guests from Wallasey, West Wirral and Royden Revolve Rotary Clubs attended,

plus non-Rotarian friends.

As the theme of Rotary International this year is "Light up Rotary" we thought it was close enough

to the Hindu festival of light "Diwali" (which was in the last week of October) for us to take

advantage of the timings and combine the two.

Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and

hope over despair, all of which accord with the humanitarian principles of Rotary.

Our chosen cause for International fundraising this year is Shelterbox - who provide emergency

shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and

humanitarian crisis. Since it was founded, Shelterbox has responded to over 230 emergency

situations in almost 90 countries.

Our aim, by the end of June next year, is to have raised enough to buy two - so we are grateful to

everyone who came along to the meal and had a go at our mystery raffle, giving generously to this

great cause.
